Program Administrator,
Benay Loftus:
Welcome students, parents and staff to the 2014-15
school year. We begin this year with exciting
professional development opportunities for both staff
and parents and welcome a new staff member to the
SELPA office. The Antelope Valley SELPA is offering
parents a three part series on IEPs, parent rights, and
conflict resolution. Additionally, staff will have the
opportunity to participate in a number of different
professional development options with strands for
teachers, psychologists, and speech pathologists.
The SELPA office is pleased to welcome our newest staff
member, Debra Rondeau, Assistive Technology
Specialist. She will provide support to all 10 member
districts to assist with meeting the needs of all students
with IEPs in the Antelope Valley SELPA.

Bienvenidos alumnos, padres de familia y personal a
nuestro ciclo 2015-2015. Iniciamos con sesiones de
capacitación profesional para nuestro personal y padres
de familia. Nos encontramos ofreciendo información
sobre el proceso IEP en 3 diferentes sesiones,
explicación de los derechos de padres y resolución en
caso de conflictos. Nuestra capacitación profesional
incluirá talleres para maestros, psicólogos y patólogos
del habla. También damos bienvenida en nuestra oficina
SELPA a la nueva Especialista en Tecnología de Asistencia
Debra Rondeau. Ella dará apoyo a todos los 10 distritos
para que ellos a su vez den apoyo a todos los alumnos
con necesidades del área SELPA del Valle del Antílope.

A Note from our Chairperson, Julie Sprute
I would like to take this time to introduce myself and welcome
you to the Antelope Valley Community Advisory Committee,
better known as the CAC. Whether you are new to our
wonderful Antelope Valley area or just joining us, our support
and quest for success for our children is ensured by our parent,
educator and community involvement in our Antelope Valley
CAC & SELPA (Special Education Local Plan Area).
We have all seen the SELPA logo in the left corner of our child’s
IEP, but do you know who we really are? We are just like you.
We are all families traversing through the same special
educational process, and there are approximately 10,000 other
families in the Antelope Valley going through the same process
as you. I would like the opportunity to meet each and every
family going through the same Special Educational process.
Together we can strive for quality, success and meaningful
outcomes.

Community Advisory Committee (FAQ)
What is the Community Advisory Committee?
The CAC is an advisory group that provides input to the
Antelope Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) and
its member school districts.
Who belongs to the Community Advisory Committee?
Parents of students with special needs
Parents of non-disabled students
Teachers
Other individuals concerned about individuals with disabilities
What does the Community Advisory Committee do?
Works on behalf of special education students
Serves in an advisory capacity to the SELPA on special
education issues
Participates in the development, review, and revision of the
Local Plan
Assists in the development of parent education opportunities
How do I join the Community Advisory Committee?
Members are appointed by each district's local board, so
contact the Director of Special Education in your child's district
for more information regarding committee membership. You
may also contact the SELPA office.
Who may attend Community Advisory Committee meetings?
The public meetings are open to anyone who is interested, and
provides a common ground for parents and professionals to
raise questions, express concerns, share common interests,
and work cooperatively on joint projects.

Una nota por parte de nuestra Presidenta Julie Sprute
Deseo aprovechar esta oportunidad para presentarme y darles
la bienvenida a nuestro comité asesor comunitario del Valle del
Antílope (Antelope Valley Community Advisory Committee,
mejor conocido como Comité CAC). Si ustedes son nuevos
residentes de este valle o son nuevos a nuestro comité, la
búsqueda y apoyo de ustedes para lograr mejores éxitos para
sus hijos se asegura con su participación en nuestro comité
perteneciente al plan local de educación especial (SELPA).
Todos nos hemos familiarizado con el logotipo SELPA en lado
izquierdo o parte arriba del documento IEP de su hijo(s). Pero,
¿qué hay más allá del logotipo? Somos personas como usted
con familiares participando en el proceso de educación
especial. Existen aproximadamente 10,000 familias en este
Valle del Antílope con este tipo de necesidades. Me agradaría
recibir la oportunidad de conocer a cada uno de ustedes y sus
familias quienes pasan por similares situaciones. Todos
nosotros como grupo podemos luchar por resultados
significantes, exitosos, y de calidad. Les invito a ingresar a la

¿En qué consiste el comité asesor comunitario CAC?
CAC está formado de un grupo cual da su opinión y aconseja a
la oficina SELPA de educación especial de este Valle del
Antílope, lo mismo que a sus miembros, distritos escolares.
¿Quién forma parte del comité CAC?
Padres de alumnos con necesidades especiales

Estas reuniones son públicas y disponibles para todo aquel

Getting Kids to Cooperate..gasp
Stacy Alvey, Mental Health Coordinator
Being a parent is easy…said no parent ever. One of the most
difficult challenges is dealing with a child whose behavior is
escalating, without getting roped into the escalation
ourselves. We call this an “escalation trap”.
So what can parents do to avoid escalation traps? Dr. Alan
Ralph and Dr. Matt R. Sanders, authors and developers of
the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, teach parents to
make clear, calm requests. Parents need to make sure they;
1) get the timing right (don’t make a request during the time
your child is watching their favorite show for example), 2)
make sure you have your child’s attention and specifically
describe what you want your child to do, 3) give your child
some time to cooperate, and 4) praise them when they do
cooperate.
If your child does not cooperate, think twice about giving
them a second chance. A second chance may be appropriate
for younger children, but definitely not for teenagers. Back
up your request with a consequence you’ve thought of
ahead of time. Avoid threatening your child with a
consequence if they don’t cooperate, as threats are likely to
fuel an argument.

SELPA Assistive Technology Specialist
We are happy to introduce our new SELPA Assistive
Technology Specialist, Debra Rondeau!
Debra will be supporting our 10 school districts with
k
Assistive
Technology.
For the past 13 years, she has worked in a variety of
educational settings mostly working with students with
severe physical and health impairments. She has a great
passion for technology and helping people access life
tasks. She is grateful to have been blessed with a job that
allows her to do both!
Debra was born and raised in the Antelope Valley,
attended the Master’s College in Valencia, and California
State Los Angeles.
Her favorite cuisine is Mexican food, and she loves to
spend time with her family and friends, going to the beach,
and playing with her two children.
Margo Deal
Coordinator of Special Education for Eastside
Margo Deal has been in education for 25 years. She
received her BA from Ft. Lewis College, Durango, Colorado
in 1989. Shortly after, she moved to the Antelope Valley,
and started working for Eastside Union School District in
1990. She has taught grades 3-8, has been an AP/Dean of
Instruction for 10 years, and was also the Principal of
Eastside Elementary for 5 years. She is excited to be the
Coordinator of Special Education/Student Services for
EUSD for the 2014-15 school year.
She is an avid scuba diver, and travels at least twice a year
to various diving destinations. Her most recent trips were
to Curacao, Costa Rica, and Cozumel, Mexico. Margo loves
to travel, and on weekends she loves to get in the car and
see where she ends up. She has 2 grandchildren that are
the center of her life who are 1 and 5.
Margo is very proud that EUSD has opened a new school
this year, Enterprise Elementary. It is home to over 750
students, including moderate/severe K-3 program, and
SDC 4-6 classes.

Motivando a los Niños a Colaborar..

“Ser padre es fácil”…esta frase aun no la hemos oído
escuchar de ningún padre, ¿cierto? Una de las cosas más
difíciles es lidiar con un niño cuyo comportamiento escala
cada vez más sin enredarnos en esto nosotros mismos. A
esto le llamamos la trampa que va escalando, o “escalation
trap.” ¿Cómo evitar caer en esta trampa? El Dr. Alan Ralpy y
Dr. Matt R. Sanders, autores y creadores del programa Triple
P Positive Parenting Program, enseñan a los padres a darles
órdenes a sus hijos de manera clara y calmada. Como padres,
debemos asegurar lo siguiente: 1) ordenarles al momento
adecuado (no cuando nuestros hijos estén viendo su
programa favorito), 2) asegurar que nuestros hijos estén
poniéndonos atención, describiendo específicamente lo que
desean que hagan, 3) permitirles cierto tiempo antes de
empezar a hacerlo, y 4) elogiarles posteriormente cuando
hayan terminado. En caso que no obedezcan, deles una
segunda oportunidad (para niños más pequeños,
definitivamente no para los adolescentes). A la segunda
orden explíquenle cual sería el resultado si no obedecen,
pero no de manera amenazante, de lo contrario, puede dar
inicio a momentos desagradables.

Especialista en Tecnología de Asistencia, Debra Rondeau.
Ella estará apoyando a nuestros 10 distritos escolares con
su experiencia en tecnología de asistencia.
Durante
los últimos 13 años ella ha estado trabajando en
k
una variedad de instituciones educativas con alumnos
teniendo impedimentos severos, físicos y de la salud. Ella
demuestra una gran pasión por la tecnología y el auxiliar a
la gente a tener acceso a esta para mejorar sus vidas y el
de sus familias. Ella se siente bendecida en poder
desempeñar este tipo de trabajo. Ella nació aquí en el
Valle del Antílope, obteniendo su maestría en la escuela
College en Valencia California. Su comida favorita es la
mexicana. Le encanta estar con su familia, amistades, ir a
la playa, y sobre todo jugar con sus hijitos.
Margo Deal
Coordinadora de Educación Especial,
Distrito Escolar Eastside
Margo Deal ha trabajado en educación especial durante
25 años. Recibió su bachillerato de Ft. Lewis College,
Durango, Colorado en 1989. Poco después vino al Valle
del Antílope para trabajar en Distrito Escolar Eastside en
1990. Ha instruido de 3º a 8º grado escolar. Ha sido
Asistente de Director y de Instrucción por 10 años.
También fue directora de la escuela Eastside Elementray
durante 5 años. Ahora se entusiasma de ser Coordinadora
de Educación Especial/Departamento de Servicios al
Alumnado para el distrito de este ciclo escolar 2014-15.
Practica el scuba con entusiasmo y viaja mínimo 2 veces al
año a varias destinaciones: Curacao la más reciente,
luego, Costa Rica, y Cozumel, México. Le encanta viajar y
en fin de semanas le encanta manejar y ver a dónde la
lleva el camino. Tiene 2 nietos de 1 y 5 años, a quienes
considera el centro de su vida. Ella se enorgullece por el
hecho que su distrito recientemente abrió una nueva
escuela, Enterprise Elementary, recibiendo más de 750
alumnos, incluyendo programas de kínder a 3º grado para
alumnos con necesidad de ayuda moderada a intensiva y
salones SDC de 3º a 6º con número reducido de alumnos.
