En Face (ahn fahss)
In choreography, executing a step “en face”
means a dancer is facing the audience.
At the Ballet, our audience is more than
patrons seated in the theater…
This season, Milwaukee Ballet faced the entire country when Peter Pan, which
had been filmed by Milwaukee Public Television in 2012, was broadcast nationally
on PBS. The film put Milwaukee on a much larger stage than ever before and, true
to the mission of MPTV, ‘opened the world’ of dance to a whole new audience.
Sometimes, we face an audience of little ones. From the buses of children
arriving at our studios each week for their “Relevé” classes, to the hundreds of eager
learners listening to our dancers read to them at Ballet Storytime, to the raucous
and excited young audience at The Nutcracker student matinees, we must present
ballet in a way that engages all ages and all backgrounds.
Before we face the audience on opening night of a performance, much time,
planning and resources go into each production, especially a world premiere.
With great financial support from Donna and Donald Baumgartner, Katie Heil and
many others, Mirror Mirror was an artistic success and a great exclamation point
at the end of the 2013–14 season.
Michael Pink, Artistic Director
This annual report is presented EN FACE, directly to our volunteers, donors,
board members, audience members, contributors and community partners alike.
Enjoy these stories of Milwaukee Ballet, and thank you for being part of the family.

fairy tale face lift
Milwaukee Ballet’s World Premiere of Mirror Mirror, May 15–18, 2014.
An imaginative and original interpretation of Snow White, Michael Pink’s Mirror
Mirror was as unexpected as our audience has come to expect. In Mirror Mirror,
a story which has been an artistic and intellectual pursuit for over a decade,
Artistic Director Michael Pink saw the classic tale of Snow White through a
different lens, presenting a unique, darker back-story with sinuous characters
presenting their tragedy, betrayal, fear and lust through dance, light and music.
“On the whole, Pink and his co-conspirators have
produced a thing of spine-tingling beauty, whose quixotic
glamour, visual thrills and twisted psychodrama should
appeal to a wide audience, not simply to connoisseurs
of ballet.”
bachtrack.com, May 2014
Nearly 7,000 patrons saw Snow White (Nicole Teague/Luz San Miguel)
mature and ultimately triumph, despite multiple attempts on her life, as well as
the grotesque but gorgeous ‘evil stepmother’ Claudia’s (Susan Gartell) dramatic
demise. A fallen-star turned magic mirror, an avant-garde wedding and minions
of faceless demons scuttling about massive steel trees were the creation of set
designer Todd Ivins, who worked on sets and costumes for three years.
Frequent musical collaborator and friend, British composer Philip Feeney’s
original evocative score created the distinct sound world of the abstract visual
imagery.
“A new work of art is a significant investment of time and money,” said
Michael Pink. “We want to make the audience forget that they are attending a
ballet, but rather that they are actually immersed in this drama. I hope that we
accomplished that.”
Mirror Mirror was presented through the generosity of Donna and Donald
Baumgartner with major support from the Heil Family Foundation; Ettinger
Family Foundation; Nita Soref; Susanna and Justin Mortara and The National
Endowment for the Arts.

Story ballet
Since 2005, one outreach program has very quietly inspired tiny dancers in libraries
all over Milwaukee. Ballet Storytime is a popular, free event at public libraries and
elementary schools, reaching over 1,200 children during the 28 storytime readings
presented during the 2013–14 school year.
Two dancers from our Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II Program visit a library
or school and take turns reading a book to children in grades pre-K through 2.
More than just stories about ballet, Ballet Storytime books are chosen to impart
lessons such as making healthy choices, accepting others or following your dreams.
Storytime is interactive with dancers demonstrating basic ballet steps and
exercises and children mirroring what they see. Storytime aligns with Common
Core State Standards for schools and also gives the children an up-close look at
costumes and pointe shoes.

The face of a
creative future
“We are proud to provide resources that help educate
and encourage positive growth for students. We know
Milwaukee Ballet is a wonderful cultural asset to our
community, instilling a creative spirit in our children
unlike any other. ”
Kaye Garcia, Executive Director of Forest County Potawatomi Foundation
In order to assure that everyone who wants to take ballet lessons has access to
them, Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy offers financial assistance for
students at every level. Since 2007 Forest County Potawatomi Foundation has
played an important part in the success of the Ballet’s Scholarship and Financial
Assistance Program. Making it part of their mission to help people who face
economic challenges, Forest County Potawatomi Foundation provides financial
help to students whose dream is to dance, such as Alberto Carillo, a 5th grader at
ALBA and a Relevé Scholarship recipient. “I like Relevé because it’s fun and I get
to meet other kids who also like ballet. The instructors are really nice and I like to
learn new steps. I love dancing.”
166 students received financial assistance in
the 2013–14 school year.
Financial assistance saw a 20% increase in
students and 17% increase in financial
assistance dollars offered.

Emil Fischer | 1926–2014
Emil Fischer and his wife Gail had a great number of philanthropic interests, but
his most cherished centered on the arts. He was a founding board member of
Milwaukee Ballet. Gail and Emil established the Peter Schetter Scholarship fund
at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to support the training of a student
demonstrating strong potential to become a professional dancer. The Ballet will
be forever grateful for Emil’s generosity and support.

a new Stage
“Like a proud father, Michael Pink opened his company’s Winter Series with an unannounced
curtain raiser. MBII, Milwaukee Ballet’s 20 young professionals-in-training, performed
At World’s End, a work they triumphantly premiered last month at the South Milwaukee
Performing Arts Center. Made for them by resident choreographer Timothy O’Donnell who had
another world premiere in this night’s program, it’s composed of quick, muscular scenes
that highlight each dancer. The finale has them all on stage accomplishing difficult movements
to an Olafur Arnalds electronic score about ultimate loss. The dancers looked a little stunned
at first, but grew in confidence. The audience cheered.”

Facing the nation
One of the Ballet’s great success stories, the creation and production of the
magical Peter Pan, enjoyed a national spotlight this year when the Public Broadcasting
Service nationally televised this ballet in primetime on April 18th at 8:00 PM, CST.
Specifically recorded by Milwaukee Public Television during our May 2012 performance
run, this marked the first opportunity of any Milwaukee area arts
group to appeal to a nationally broad audience, marking a significant
achievement of Milwaukee Ballet and recognition of great work in Milwaukee.
Thanks to a generous gift from We Energies Foundation, Tinkerbell, Peter Pan,
and the Darling children visited the homes of the young and young at heart from
Los Angeles to New York City.

Peter Pan aired in primetime broadcasts in
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia,
Boston, Washington, and Houston, seven
of the 10 largest TV markets.
200,000 people viewed the show
in its premiere release on PBS, the largest
audience ever to see a Milwaukee Ballet
performance at one time.
Huffington Post reviewed the premiere,
and The Los Angeles Times featured it as a
“Top TV Highlight.”

Holiday traditions
BMO Harris Bank provided a “holiday gift to Milwaukee” through sponsorship
of The Nutcracker, a long-time holiday tradition. Widely anticipated year after year
The Nutcracker is the familiar story of holiday wishes and dreams. Milwaukee
Ballet Company dancers and students from Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy
perform for around 30,000 patrons each year.
“It’s very important for all of us to recognize the
significance of family traditions and the arts, which serve
as important foundations for strong communities.
Through our support of Milwaukee Ballet, we are proud
to ensure that many families in our community will be
able to enjoy the ‘The Nutcracker’ production this year.”
kara Kaiser, Regional president of BMo Harris Bank
“BMO Harris Bank made a major investment in the Milwaukee community,”
said Artistic Director, Michael Pink. “What better gift than investing in the
memories that we make together as families and as a community?”
did you know?
“Every dancer who has ever danced the role of the
Snow Queen has signed her name in the Snow Fairy
book she magically appears from at the beginning of the
scene. It is a permanent expression of encouragement
to the dancer who is about to face the audience.”
Courtney Kramer, dancer and Snow Queen

Raise the Barre
Elegant and evil, whimsical and memorable, engaging and ingenious, such were
the celebrations during Milwaukee Ballet’s 2013–14 season. The Ball 2014 as well
as the Opening Night events embodied the much anticipated world premiere of
Mirror Mirror, The 11th Annual Nutcracker Tea welcomed families to the University
Club for a tour of the Tannenbaum home, and the spotlight was on famed
Lighting Designer David Grill at the Artist Series Pabst Edition. The 2013–14 Special
Events not only wowed and inspired guests, but also raised over $200,000 for
Milwaukee Ballet.

The Many Faces Of
Our Company
Milwaukee Ballet’s dancers are more than meets the eye. As full-time employees,
they dance Monday–Friday from 9:30 am–6:15 pm, taking classes and rehearsing
in preparation for the role they will play on stage. But outside of the studios,
Company dancers are encouraged to explore their artistic nature both in and out
of Milwaukee Ballet.
Timothy O’Donnell has artistic talents to spare. A native of Australia, O’Donnell
first came to Milwaukee in 2009 to compete in, and ultimately win, the Genesis
International Choreographic Competition with his original work, The Games We
Play. He then joined the Company in 2012 as a dancer and resident choreographer.
Mengjun Chen came to the United States from Beijing, China to
pursue a professional ballet career in the United States. He joined
Milwaukee Ballet in 2011. Following the 2013–14, Chen spent time
preparing 6 pieces for the USA
International Ballet Competition in
Jackson, Mississippi. Chen was one of 31
dancers from around the world to compete in the
finals and placed in the top 10.
Luz San Miguel grew up in Madrid, Spain, surrounded by the
artistry of food. Her parents own a restaurant and although her
passion for dance was strongest, she never outgrew a passion for
food. This past summer, San Miguel, who also caters private
parties and dinners, taught a Tapas-style cooking lesson at Boelter
SuperStore’s Cooking Store. “Tapas de Don Quixote” gave
San Miguel a unique opportunity to connect with people outside
of Ballet, as she shared recipes for gluten-free tapas inspired by
her upcoming role in Don Quixote.
Clockwise from top: Timothy O’Donnell, Luz San Miguel,
Mengjun Chen

During the 2013–14 season he choreographed the World Premiere of Talk To Me
for Spring Series, and served as the choreographic assistant for Mirror Mirror.
O’Donnell, a photographer, also chronicled rehearsals, filmed interviews with
dancers and created promotional videos throughout the season.
15
Fiscal Integrity
Each season brings great opportunities and great challenges, and both are met
with equal parts enthusiasm and scrutiny. Milwaukee Ballet’s Board of Directors,
leadership and staff are fundamentally committed to fiscal integrity. We continue
to meet our financial obligations while investing in infrastructure, programming
and growth. With decreases in federal funding for the arts and declining corporate
sponsorship, a positive year-end bottom line with no short or long term debt is a
significant achievement.
A growing patron base, combined with consistent registrations for Milwaukee
Ballet School & Academy and its Summer Intensive Program, ensured that the
ratio of earned and contributed revenue remained stable. In 2013–14, earned
revenue from ticket sales and school tuition totaled $3.4 million, approximately
53% of the Ballet’s $6 million+ budget. The Ballet closed the 2013–14 fiscal year
with a positive bottom line.
Michael Pink’s season-closing World Premiere of Mirror Mirror was a significant
artistic and fiscal undertaking. However, in addition to generous philanthropic
support, we were also able to utilize the talents of our own costume shop and
construction crews to keep costs below projected levels. Ticket sales for Mirror Mirror
placed the Ballet in a strong fiscal position in the 4th quarter.
Outside of foundational support from UPAF, the majority of contributed
revenue came through annual donations and sponsorships. 2013–14 saw the
addition of a major new performance sponsor: BMO Harris Bank, who announced
a $50,000 commitment to The Nutcracker, their “Holiday Gift to Milwaukee”.
We remain so grateful for the donors, subscribers and volunteers who keep
Milwaukee Ballet on solid footing year after year.

Creative Collaboration
Dozens of volunteers. Over 500 nutcrackers and 1,500 ornaments.
Nearly $50,000 in annual revenue.
It is quite the experience to climb the staircase of the Marcus Center for the
Performing Arts to the atrium for the first time during the holiday season and
witness the expanse of ornaments, books, toys, and apparel on display at
The Nutcracker Boutique. While shopping, you may not have thought about the
planning, selecting, ordering, pricing, and sorting that takes place many
months prior to December.
“It has been a wonderful challenge to find the perfect
gift item, or find the perfect new shirt design and how
to display the items in the perfect way.”
Lori Barrieau, Volunteer Boutique manager
Volunteer Boutique Manager Lori Barrieau is preparing for the following
season even before the current one is over. Plans for The Nutcracker Boutique
begin in January, with a trip to Chicago to purchase merchandise. The items
are then individually unwrapped, priced and repacked for their safe journey to
the theater. The day before The Nutcracker performances begin, volunteers
embark on 18 hours of transforming folding tables into a holiday market with
all of The Nutcracker merchandise, mixed with tutus, wings, halos, dolls,
swords, books and Milwaukee Ballet logowear. The stunning assortment of
keepsakes she amasses is truly an artful accomplishment.

“We love this project and
[are] thrilled to work with
you on it again!”
Pamila Brown, Community Investment Specialist,
Corporate Affairs, ManpowerGroup
For the past three years, volunteers from ManpowerGroup have eagerly
helped unpack, sort, and price keepsake nutcrackers and other Boutique items
to prepare them for sale in December. Those who have assisted with this project
have been able to complete in one afternoon what it formerly took Lori over
50 hours alone to finish.
In addition to being completely volunteer-run, the boutique earns revenue
which specifically benefits scholarships for Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy.
“I have loved meeting the many families involved with the Ballet Boutique
for the first time and those who have faithfully helped each year,” said Barrieau.
“Families and friends of the ballet have been very generous with their time in
helping the boutique be successful.”
ManpowerGroup volunteers
Milwaukee Ballet gratefully acknowledges Lori’s tireless work in building the
Boutique into the fundraising powerhouse it is today. She and the loyal volunteers
who support her efforts are incredible unsung heroes of the Ballet.
