pav e t h e way pav e t h e way Gary Melius, a member of the board of Pave the Way Foundation,
has been a building contractor and real estate developer for almost
four decades. He has completed numerous major projects. Currently,
he devotes almost 100% of his time to the renovation and commercial
development of Oheka Castle.
pav e t h e way pav e t h e way pav e t h e way pav e t h e way Oheka Castle, originally constructed by Otto Herman Kahn in 1919,
was acquired by Mr. Melius in 1984 as a vandalized ruin. Mr. Melius
saw the potential of the property. Having the vision, determination and
financial depth, he undertook the monumental task of restoring this
architectural wonder to its original splendor, utilizing the techniques
employed in its original construction.
pav e t h e way pav e t h e way In 1996 Mr. Melius created Oheka Catering, Inc. utilizing the historic
mansion’s finely restored second floor rooms. Mr. Melius’ vision was
to create an elegant banquet venue & hotel to make use of Oheka’s
breathtaking “Roaring Twenties” ambiance – together with exquisite
cuisine and white glove service.

In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Melius maintains a high
profile in the business community of Long Island, giving his time to
many civic, charitable, political and public organizations.

pav e t h e way pav e t h e way pav e t h e way pav e t h e way Lewis Okin has distinguished himself as a philanthropist and business
leader over a career that spans more than five decades. His quiet
support of numerous non-profit organizations has improved the quality
of life for countless individuals in his own community and abroad. In
addition to his membership on the board of Pave the Way Foundation,
his generous philanthropy has been recognized with his being honored
by UJA-Federation. Mr. Okin, an avid baseball fan, was highly involved
in his children’s Little League, even after they were too old to play.

way up to branch manager and eventually taking over the reins of what
became known as Green Art Plumbing Supply in 1973. That same year
he assumed ownership of East Coast Sprinkler, formed a partnership
with Cove Plumbing Supply of Glen Cove, and grew these firms into
leaders in their industry. He is a member of the National Kitchen and
Bath Association, as well as a board member of the Omni Corp. buying
group. His many accomplishments in business are not limited to the
plumbing industry, as he has been the longtime proprietor of South
Shore Record Storage, and the Rolling River Day Camp.

Mr. Okin and his wife Roberta have three children, Alex, Brian and
Rebecca. He is member of Congregation Beth Emeth and is active at the
Woodmere Country Club.

commitment, dedication, enrichment and enlightenment through education and collaboration.
I am both proud and honored to be a part of this evening’s Inaugural Citizens of Distinction
Award.
pav e t h e way Gary Melius, who my family considers Otto’s reincarnation, saw the inner value and truth of
my great grandfather’s home, even through the state of disrepair it was in when he took on the
challenge of restoring it to its original standards, structure and opulence. If those beautifully replastered hand painted walls could only speak…ah what tales they would tell. Gary also wanted
to share his vision with others by offering OHEKA Castle as a venue for weddings, Bar and
Bat Mitzvahs, anniversary celebrations, corporate retreats and incentives. In addition, he has
opened the property to advertising agencies, film companies and professional photographers…
again bringing to the twenty-first century the reality and vision shared by my great grandfather.
pav e t h e way Otto was the quintessential patron of the arts. He gave equally of his time and his finances. He
also appreciated the value of education, the most powerful asset one possesses. It is how we
embrace, utilize and share our education with others that distinguishes the good from the great.
pav e t h e way The Castle was built by Otto, who was shunned by many due to his German heritage and
religious beliefs. In keeping with the adage “living well is the best revenge”, Otto contracted
with the City of New York to have the sludge from the construction of the Lincoln Tunnel
trucked to his property so that OHEKA could sit up high allowing Otto a view of his surroundings
including the magnificent Long Island Sound.
pav e t h e way As you are aware, my family is forever indebted and most appreciative of the incredible “once
in a lifetime” restoration that Gary has undertaken of OHEKA, my great grandfather Herman
Otto Kahn’s residence. Had it not been for Gary’s vision, dreams and undying commitment,
the Kahn Family might never have seen, felt nor experienced one of the many lives of Otto
Kahn.
