I am humbled to be a part of a community with such history and accomplishment and once again want to invite the world to explore Dauphin by visiting our museums, attending our festivals and experiencing the unspoiled nature that is our backyard. 125 years is no small undertaking for the life of an event like the annual Agricultural Fair and certainly the longevity suggests the commitment and values of farm families in the region, who for over a century have made significant contribution to our economic and cultural fabric. It is the dedication of our volunteers and vision of our leaders who make possible the quality of life in Dauphin, making our community a unique place to live and visit. Congratulations to the Dauphin Agricultural Society on this landmark anniversary. I invite one and all to visit the Fair as it happens over Canada Day long weekend while the nation’s longest running country music festival hums away at Selo Ukraina. Take the time to do the things locals do: hike our meandering trails, fishing our abundant lakes and gaze up at a night sky filled not only with shimmering northern lights, but with possibility. Welcome to Dauphin! During any given month our venues are abuzz with activity from grassroots family functions to world class entertainment. Sure, Dauphin does have the distinct advantage of hosting large events at Selo (our picture-prairie-perfect, 14,000 seat, outdoor amphitheatre), but the major festivals aren’t the only things that make this little city tick. There are art exhibits, dance and theatre performances, challenging runs through snow, mud and blasts of colour, and even more than all of this, offering visitors and residents endless memorable experiences. Check out our community events listings and our online events calendar to find out more today! The Dauphin Kings Junior A Hockey Club has been a fixture in Dauphin since 1968, and after playing for decades in the legendary “Barn” (Dauphin Memorial Community Centre) the Kings now play at Credit Union Place in the Parkland Recreation Complex in Dauphin, which opened in 2007. In May 2010, we hosted the RBC Cup National Junior ‘A’ Hockey Championship, which was named a finalist for Canadian Sport Event of the Year at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance PRESTIGE Awards. The Kings also hosted the 2010 CJHL Top 40 Prospects Game, and the 2014 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup. But, the Kings are about more than just events and hockey. They are an integral part of our community’s identity, and the games are a meeting place for hockey fans and non-fans alike. The players give our young hockey players heroes to look up to, right in their own backyard. And, they give back in a big way. Each and every Thursday is “Kings in the Community” day, when the entire team goes into all six elementary schools to read and play with the students, and even serve the Dauphin Friendship Centre’s hot food program, “Food for Thought”. In addition to that, they attend birthday parties, events at local businesses, CanSkate, Rascals and Dauphin Minor Hockey…Kings players are giving back to Dauphin for over 100 days in a 6-month season! These family members laugh, dance and struggle up the mountain and, in the end, they experience the fulfillment of 16 accomplishing the challenge together. The reunions provide a lifeline of strength and commitment because the riders come together annually for one reason: the hope that one day the cause of and cure for multiple sclerosis will be known. As with all family reunions, this event has characters, memories and stories. And each event introduces new family members. There are over 160 Visit Dauphin | 2016 Visitors Guide volunteers who feed and watch over the riders, keeping them warm and ensuring their safety. These familiar faces welcome the riders each year and make them feel as if they’ve never been away. The community of Dauphin is where these riders return each year to experience hometown comfort. The WAC (as it is affectionately called) has been around since 1905 and has held many “jobs” (town hall, police station, jail, fire department, library and more) before focusing on the arts. The WAC is a hub where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to take in phenomenal entertainment and training in all facets of the arts including dance, pottery, music, theatre, painting, and quilting. One can come here to take in a play, enjoy live music or comedy, or even taste exotic food and drink. The historic building is in great repair and is a culturally significant meeting place for all who reside in the Parkland region. The WAC has drawn full-house crowds for nationally and internationally recognized acts such as The Trews, Prairie Oyster, 54.40 and the Sheepdogs. It has also brought amazing up-and-coming talent to Dauphin, including Madison Violet, Nathan, Imaginary Cities, Ray Bonneville and Romi Mayes. In addition, the Dauphin and District Allied Arts Association makes great efforts to support local acts by offering them a forum to be seen and heard. Audience members from larger cities are always impressed by the building’s ambience. Dauphin is blessed to have this unique venue and the many volunteers who work so hard to put on the shows and activities for the appreciative audiences and participants. Art at the WAC The Dauphin Art Group helps artists pursue the development of their artistic skills in a supportive group setting while connecting them with the arts community in Dauphin and the Parkland Region. Creating art is a richly rewarding inner journey in which artists explore, experiment, play, and translate creative ideas into visual reality, progressively learning, developing and better understanding their chosen tools, techniques, style of expression, and ultimately themselves. The weekend workshops (instructor-led), miniretreats (no instructor), and studio access provided by the Dauphin Art Group gives artists the time, space, and resources to focus on their art. Dauphin Art Group also provides members with the opportunity to exhibit their artworks in the gallery and at juried art shows. Visit watsonartcentre.com or like us on Facebook, or email [email protected]. dauphin.ca 21 Parkland Recreation Complex The Parkland Recreation Complex is a top-shelf, multi-purpose recreation and entertainment facility. The complex features all kinds of banquet and meeting rooms and is easily transformed for any event. Credit Union Place is home to MJHL’s Dauphin Kings, but has also set the stage for stars such as Burton Cummings, Johnny Reid, and Corb Lund. With a capacity of nearly 2,800 including standing room, this facility is a second-to-none events site which also includes a 211-metre rubberized walking and running track. Just beyond the rink is the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre, a wave pool which features a 4-lane, 25-metre main tank, plus a zero-depth entry leisure area. A 12-person hot tub, water umbrella, birthday party room, and comfortable viewing area make this an ideal family destination. The curling rink offers the perfect venue to host or watch a bonspiel with 140-seat viewing lounge, which is also available to rent. On site, just a few steps away is the Rotary arena that is used for a variety of events including curling, hockey, fitness classes, yoga, summer camps for kids, and more. The DMCC Fairgrounds on the adjacent fields cover over 50 acres of land which is home to the Dauphin Fair and other events. The space features six baseball diamonds, concessions, agricultural barns, ample audience seating, and outdoor track for harness, chariot, chuckwagon and stock car racing. The outdoor skating rink, also located on the grounds, offers an ideal spot for leisurely skating with lights in the evenings and heated change rooms. COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM Each year, Dauphin in Bloom works on improving the quality of life in the community through green space development, floral displays, heritage conservation, landscaping, urban forestry, environmental action, and community engagement. Dauphin in Bloom is committed to maintaining the 5 Bloom status since 2004, the highest rating possible. The City of Dauphin has been a National Winner three times, most recently in 2014 as National Class of Champions (Small City Category) as well as placing in the top three for the Reforestation Program, competing with 600 communities across Canada. The recent focus has been on creating quiet areas for resting and relaxing while enjoying a picnic lunch and the beautiful surroundings. The goal is to plant at least 50 trees each year to replace diseased ones, in newly developed areas, as well as school yards and daycares while engaging youth to assist with forestation efforts. During the winter months, we light up the trees and streets to make the city bright and welcoming. Many activities are planned to celebrate winter including Tree Lighting, Parade of Lights, Christmas at the Fort, Homes-A-Glow and Family Fun Day! The Dauphin Agricultural Society office is hidden in a rather out-of-the-way corner of the Parkland Rec Centre in Dauphin and if you aren’t a member of the organization, you likely wouldn’t know it was there. Even living in Dauphin for the last 6 years, working in a position where you seemingly get to know every nook and cranny of the city, Dauphin still holds little surprises and thrills, and some of that lies in exploring the history of this unique community. When I called to ask if anyone might be able to speak with me about the Ag Society’s 125th Anniversary, I was eagerly greeted by Pat Boyd, a joyful little woman who has been with the Ag Society for an impressive number of years. An easy stroll to the Rec Centre followed by a few wrong turns in the back channels of the building and I located the office, which, as the door opened, I realized must be holding all 125 years of documentation. Pat and I got into conversation immediately and I quickly realized that I would need to take notes. I love looking at images from what seems another world and this is how Pat told me the story of the Dauphin region and how the Ag Society was arguably the most critical element of its establishment. We combed through hundreds of fantastic pictures and laughed at some of the fascinating and seemingly absurd advertising of the day and eventually we moved into the story written down by this impressively old organization, and it is told as follows… Around the year 1883, a pair of brothers by the name of Nagle were having one heck of a prosperous time in the rich valley, between the Duck and Riding Mountains. Coming home from delivering goods, the brothers stopped in Gladstone, Manitoba. Here they told the Whitmore family of the abundant hunting, fishing and the fertile, rich soil which supported fields of wild fruit and berries that turned red with lilies in the 30 spring. That very summer, a party led by Tom Whitmore struck out from Gladstone to see the claims of the Nagle brothers for themselves. The party found the claims to be true and realizing the possibility of production in this otherwise unsettled region, decided to plant the first crops – the hearty potato. Carving their names in trees and staking out land for some of the first homesteads in the area, the group returned home after a total of two weeks. Although Whitmore led the initial exploration of the area, it was the Edwards family who traveled back that September to harvest their crop of potatoes. They decided to stay the winter of 1883-84, not only braving the extreme elements but doing so without the support of neighbours and the nearest supplies a 10-day trip, up to 200 miles away. In 1890, Whitmore determined a need for pioneer families to gather in the newly settled region and decided to plan a fair to showcase produce and visit with friends, family and neighbours. It was a great success and the following year, Mr. Whitmore held the first official fair (Canadian Charter 30). This marked the inception of the first official club in Dauphin, an organization that continues to grow and flourish and proudly celebrates 125 years in 2016. Although the fair is now held on the DRCSS grounds (next to the rec centre), the fair was originally held south of the city. It was later moved to where the current Pioneer Park is, along the Vermillion River, and eventually to the site we know of today. The 125th Dauphin Agricultural Society Fair will be held July 1–3, 2016 at the DRCSS Fairgrounds. Find out more at dauphinagsociety.com. While most of the hiking trails are single use, a good portion of the extensive trail system is designated as multi-use. Only a short drive from Dauphin, several hikes can be accessed from park roads, including Highway 10. The park’s trail network is largely interconnected with many trails only accessible from other trails rather than road-accessible trailheads. 32 Reeve’s Ravine Trail is located on the east side of the park and provides an 11.5-kilometre loop trail that rises 541 feet from the trailhead to the summit. Access this and other trails on Highway 19, the East Gate entrance, and take a rolling, scenic drive through the east escarpment with endless opportunities for photography and wildlife viewing. Thanks to the efforts of several local volunteer organizations, many trails are open to cross-country skiers and back-country skiers during the winter months. The Manitoba Escarpment provides exceptional viewpoints over the park and the surrounding region. The RMNP and Duck Mountain Provincial Park websites provide yearround lists of current trail conditions. Between the two parks, there are over 450 kms of trails to enjoy, ranging from easy to difficult and allowing for walking, biking, horse back riding and, in some cases, ATVs. Its history began in 2000 when George Graham, a young skateboard enthusiast, brought together resources and youth to get things started. Those early years consisted of wooden structures that were utilized indoors at the Dauphin Rec. Centre. A small board of volunteers consisting of Judy King, Sherry Birss, Dave Bloomfield and Tammy Laurie worked hard to keep the seasonal facility operational. Gradually those structures fell into disrepair. However, the passion for a permanent skateboard park gained momentum. In 2006 the Healthy Dauphin Committee, lead by Bill Hart, began a concerted effort to develop a plan for a skateboard park. Many meetings were initiated with local and provincial government representatives, along with Dauphin Rec. Services and volunteers, who saw the need for a permanent facility. In 2009 a public meeting was held at the Lion’s Den to consolidate all the interest in planning and constructing the park. Out of that meeting a committee was established under the leadership of Rod Carberry. The City of Dauphin provided the land for this location that was purchased from CNR. The Province of Manitoba, in cooperation with MLA Stan Struthers, provided substantial funding. Costing over half a million dollars, this park is made possible by the generous donations of many organizations and individuals in Dauphin. We now have a permanent multi-use facility for skateboarders, bikers and snowboarders. It will take its place as one of the most utilized recreational facilities in Dauphin. Dauphin Neighborhood Renewal Corporation provided funding for a feasibility study. The search for a location began. Profile: Kelly Michaluk Photography How long have you been a photographer? I have been a professional photographer for 22 years operating my own portrait studio in Dauphin. I am a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) and currently board treasurer of PPOC – Manitoba Chapter. I am nationally accredited in Children’s Portraiture and Environmental Portraiture. What inspired you to become a photographer? I was always interested in the arts as far back as I can remember. My high school Commercial Art teacher, Mr. Elias, first introduced me to photography. After highschool I went on to study at the Alberta College of Art and Design. In 1993 I had the opportunity to move back to my hometown of Dauphin and take over an established portrait studio. I haven't looked back since! How did you hone your skill? Photography is a mixture of technical skill and creativity. The technical part I learned while studying at ACAD and by attending workshops and conventions given by Professional Photographers of Canada. Being a member of Professional Photographers of Canada has connected me with a lot of talented photographers. I know that if I have a question or want to bounce an idea off someone there is always someone in the association willing to listen and help out. I will never stop learning even after doing photography for 22 years! I am inspired by light: the coolness, warmth, harshness and softness of light; how light falls on objects to create texture and how it can create patterns; and of course, how it can drastically affect the mood of an image! I enjoy photographing while travelling and love photographing children, newborns, families and graduates. I also should add that I am extremely lucky to be able to live in a location that offers so many gorgeous spots to do photo shoots. The Parkland is a gem for photography. What did you have to do to capture the Northern Lights image on the cover of this magazine? I have been photographing the Northern Lights for a couple of years now and love it! (Mostly photographing them towards the end of the summer when it's still warm and comfortable sitting through the long exposures!) It's exciting to see what the camera will capture that the naked eye can’t see. People in our area know that I love photographing the Northern Lights and will even send me texts or Facebook messages in the middle of the night letting me know when they are out! I often get my brother to tag along with me on the shoots to help out or just hang out with me. He was in one of the images Travel Manitoba used in their Instagram Moments book using the hash tag #ExploreMB. The photo on the cover was taken at Rainbow Beach. I used a Nikon D800 camera mounted on a tripod. Nikon 10mm 2.8 lens, ISO 800, 13s exposure. In 2009, Communities in Bloom ended the national Winterlights competition but our community kept going by expanding the initiative and calling it WinterLife, Dauphin. Each year the committee helps to bring together winter events such as the Parade of Lights, Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Moonlight Madness, Winter Family Fun Day, Louis Riel Day, Homes Aglow Competition, and new this year, the Winter Spirit Festival. Check our event listings and online calendar for more details! Dauphin’s focus on winter activities started in 2007 when the national WinterLights competition was launched by Communities in Bloom. The WinterLights Celebrations encouraged municipalities, large and small, to showcase winter activities, festive celebrations, and visual decorations that promote Canada’s appeal as a winter tourism destination and improve the quality of life in communities across the country. The program also promoted the involvement and actions of citizens and volunteers of all ages, the municipal government, service organizations, industry, and commerce. In 2007, we received five out of five stars for our efforts. Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing With so many trail options in and around Dauphin for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, this is a prime area for winter adventures! For Dauphin, it generally means a ton of snow! The trails in this spectacular region of the province have been referred to as “lovingly kept” and cover a whopping 450 kms of groomed trail. The Dauphin & District Snowmobile Club has an impressive membership of over 100 and the club is active in the region hosting a bevy of great events that are well attended each year. Keep in mind, official Snopasses are required to ride on Manitoba’s trail network. In Dauphin, Snopasses may be purchased at the following locations: MacMillan Insurance 204-638-3115 • Aspen Insurance 204-622-7776 • Love & Persson Group 204-622-7600 Here, Sylvain Paquet, president of the Dauphin club, describes his top two riding destinations in the region! Riding Mountain Trail To get on this trail, you ride out of Dauphin to the east. This will take you to Ochre River, which is a small community. From Dauphin to Ochre River it is mostly field riding and offers a bit of treeline. After you hit Ochre River, you go south and this will take you into more bushy areas and zigzag trails through the trees. You then come back west and you reach the park boundary of Riding Mountain National Park. “You’ll see an abundance of wildlife here,” said Paquet. “We get lots of deer, elk, coyotes, foxes, prairie chickens; and near the park boundary sometimes you can spot a timber wolf. As you’re riding this trail, you get into the hills where you’re going up and down and around curves. Before you head back, again you have to stop on top of Riding Mountain. Depending on visibility, you can see all the way to Dauphin and it’s just gorgeous. We are thinking of putting a shelter here so people can stay and enjoy the view.” If sledders have had enough after enjoying the view, they can head north back up to Dauphin. This route from Dauphin is about 80 kilometres. If you want to keep going, you can continue to Keld by following the park boundary. Keld is located down in the valley and here lies a beautiful shelter with wood, an outhouse, stove and some cooking utensils. This route from Dauphin through Keld and back up to Dauphin is about 130 to 140 kilometres and is also one of Paquet’s favourites. Dauphin to Winnipegosis and Ethelbert Another favourite ride of Paquet’s is north of Dauphin. This is a new trail that opened last winter. You depart Dauphin from the north and head out, mostly on farmers’ fields. You then connect to the old rail bed, which is a straight line that is groomed regularly. This trail will take you to the small community of Sifton. There is a fork in the road here. Paquet suggest you turn right and head towards Fork River. When you get to Fork River, you go into the ditch on the trail all the way to Winnipegosis. “There are restaurants, gas bars and hotels here, so you can stay overnight if you choose,” said Paquet. “Then you can get back on the trail and head to Ethelbert, where there is a shelter you can stop at. Ethelbert also offers restaurants and a gas bar. You then head back towards Sifton. The loop is about 140 kilometres, so it’s a good ride. Between Winnipegosis and Ethelbert is lots of bush riding and nice zigzag trails. Closer to Ethelbert there are more open fields and lots of deer and elk. “What I like most about sledding is the community involvement,” said Paquet. “I love meeting people from all over. It’s also a great way to not be stuck inside all winter. If you’re an outdoor person, this is the best way to see areas you would never see if you didn’t snowmobile.” To ride trails in Manitoba, you need a SnoPass from Snoman (Snowmobilers of Manitoba). You can either purchase an annual pass or buy a seven-day SnoPass. You can purchase these at any Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) agent in the province. The other option is to become a member of the Dauphin & District Snowmobile Club for $20 and you automatically become a Snoman member. I was certain this was one of the best ways to enjoy a snowy Saturday in Manitoba. I had signed up for a day of guided ice fishing with a group of women and our guide was Sticky’s Bait and Tackle based in Dauphin. I was a bit apprehensive—I had been fishing many times, but never in the winter and never through a hole in the ice. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but being the adventurous type, I decided to give it a shot. We met up with Sticky at the edge of Lake Dauphin. We were also greeted by a captivating 1950s Bombardier snowmobile capable of carrying a dozen people. We piled in and set out for the shacks. We felt like royalty being shuttled in this restored and unique Bombardier and giggled as we hit snow drifts and plowed right on through with ease. When we made it to the fishing shacks the real fun began. Sticky gave us some demonstrations covering the basics of ice fishing. As we claimed our fishing holes we started waging bets—who would be the first one to catch a fish, who would catch the biggest fish, how many fish would we catch? Sticky just smiled and www.littlegraybird.ca @littlegraybird laughed and said we would not be disappointed. And we weren’t. Within minutes a scream of delight was heard and Sticky went running to help one of our novice fisherman pull in her catch with ease. It’s a keeper! The first fish of the day was tossed into a container and bets were back on as to who would catch the next one. We all caught multiple fish, and with Sticky watching closely and helping us learn the tricks of the trade we handled it like old pros. Halfway through the day it was time to take a break and feast out on the ice. There was a fully catered lunch, cooked right there by the shacks. Salads, barbeque steak, fries, shrimp and cheesecake filled our bellies and replenished our energy. As I sat there with the sun beating down on me on the brisk winter day, surrounded by a great group of people, I was happy. I knew I was hooked. Hooked on ice fishing, hooked on experiencing winters in Manitoba to the fullest, and hooked on Sticky’s Bait and Tackle. Are you interested in getting a group together and booking a guided ice fishing trip to beat the winter blues? It’s a great way to experience winter in Manitoba and enjoy life to its fullest. Dauphin Lake has produced 11 different Master Angler species – three other species can be caught ten minutes away at the Vermillion Reservoir and 21 of the 30 eligible Master Angler species can be caught within a 50-minute drive of Dauphin. Finishing third in Canada in the “Ultimate Fishing Town” contest is a testament to the passion of the fishers and quality of fishing in the area. BIG FISH Some lakes have special regulations; consult the Manitoba Anglers’ Guide for complete information at gov.mb.ca/conservation/fish Dauphin Lake Dauphin Lake is a trophy walleye fishery with fish weighing 1.4 to 1.8 kg (3-4 lbs) or more! Try your luck catching northern pike and Master Angler walleye. The record catch of a 71.45 cm (32") walleye was made at Dauphin Lake on February 16, 2002. A number of boat launches are available, and Rainbow Beach Provincial Recreation Park offers camping and swimming. Dauphin Lake is a shallow lake, so take care when boating. (map R18) Duck Mountain Provincial Park A number of great fishing lakes and rivers can be found in this park, all within a one-hour drive. Try East Blue Lake, stocked with trophy rainbow trout, splake, and lake trout or West Blue Lake for walleye, lake trout, brown trout and perch. Fish Child’s Lake for lake trout, northern pike, splake, walleye and perch. Elk Lake is a small lake with northern pike, perch and walleye. Try Gull Lake for stocked brook trout, rainbow trout, splake, lake whitefish and sparr and Laurie Lake for lake trout, brown trout, splake, northern pike and perch. Fish for stocked bass and trout in Perch Lake (catch and release, electric motors only). Shilliday Lake is stocked with rainbow and brown trout (electric motors only). Walleye, northern pike, perch and smallmouth bass can be caught in Singuish Lake. Fly-Fishing Fly-fishing is a thriving sport in the Parkland. Try the Vermillion River Reservoir or these stocked lakes in Duck Mountain Provincial Park: Childs, East Blue, Gull, Laurie, Perch, Shilliday, and West Blue.
