"I checked out a stack of quilt books from the library and fell in love with the patterns and designs; I knew I could not stop with just one quilt." Pat started working with 5 inch squares as a basis for her quilt making in 1993 after attending her first retreat. She was asked to do a program for her guild in 1997 using the 5" squares, which gave her the push to explore new uses and techniques for working with the squares. Pat, while working a full time job, started on the book, Nickel Quilts in 1998 and was able to have it ready for the publishers in June 2001. More books followed and her latest is Nickel Quilts & Borders. She loves teaching the methods for working with the 5" squares, and sharing her quilts with others. After juggling her full time job and her quilting for many years, Pat moved into a full time quilting career in July 2003. "I have found my passion in life, and I can't imagine doing anything else." When she is not quilting (a rare and odd occurrence) Pat enjoys traveling with her two webmasters and children, Ray and Roxie, who keep her from getting lost in foreign lands. She lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Future Programs July 8 - Sally Schneider “Sensational Settings” www.sallyschneider.com August 12 - Demo Day with selected guild members. September 9 - Rob Appell Trunk Show www.robappell.com For other 2014 speakers check in the front of your directory 1 PRESIDENT’S CORNER Linda Ambrosini, [email protected], 949 362-4206 Scrappy quilts are always an unpredictable pleasure. All the different colors and textures give each scrappy quilt its own individual personality that can never be duplicated. Pat Speth, our June speaker, published her first book in 2001 with the idea of using 5 inch squares of fabric as a starting point to create scrappy themed quilts. Four books and numerous patterns later, she is still creating. Fabric manufacturers now offer pre-cut fabric collections in both 5 and 10 inch units. Pattern designers have also gotten onboard and developed even more patterns using these pre-cut sizes. Yes, everyone loves scrappy quilts! At our June General Meeting, Joann Bishop and Susie Russell will announce a new group forming within Surfside. “Super Swappers” will address exchanging fabrics to increase our stashes and get us all into a scrappy mood. Every member is welcome to participate - we can never have too many fabrics. WORKSHOPS Wendy McCalley [email protected] Linda Rigdon [email protected] Half-Square Triangle and Four-Patch Workshop with Pat Speth Wednesday, June 11th, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Fee: $40 Faith Lutheran Church, 34381 Calle Portola, Capistrano Beach. In this workshop, Pat gives us the choice of any one of 15 different quilt settings using 5” squares. There is currently a waiting list, but let us add your name - you might get lucky! The pattern books will be available at the general meeting and also at the workshop. AUGUST is usually a no-workshop month, but we have a MYSTERY WORKSHOP planned! Here are the details we are willing to reveal so far: The day: Wednesday, August 13th. The cost: $15.00. The time: 9:30-3:30. The place: Faith Lutheran Church. The Subject: Quilting related fun and laughter. Want to know more? Be at the June general meeting and we will tell you more! Space is limited to 20 attendees. If you are concerned that you might not get in, contact Wendy or Linda and reserve your space (but we still won’t give more details until the JUNE GENERAL MEETING) Wendy McCalley Linda Rigdon 2 Jen Janis (DIL), Andy Janis (son) , Joe James Janis (grandson) Juliet Janis held by Vickie's husband Joe, Sara Compean, Tommy Compean, Vickie. Vickie Janis, our outgoing SQG President, was presented with her President’s Quilt with the “under the water” theme. So many members were involved in creating this very special thank you for Vickie’s memorable year. Thank you to those who made blocks, sewed them together, appliqued letters, painted the back, sewed on the binding and sleeve, hosted a bee, hand quilted, or had any part in making this quilt. Vickie will hang it with pride in her home and remember the friendships and events of her special year. Jan Hirth, Past President THANK YOU SURFSIDE!!! The saying, ‘”time flies when you are having fun” couldn’t be more true! This year was such an incredible adventure for me and it passed too quickly. I treasured every minute and enjoyed working with so many talented ladies. The Surfside Board made my job a breeze; our members make it all possible. Thank you, Surfside! My quilt is truly an amazing work of art. I brought it home and hung it immediately over my quilting machine. Special thanks to Jan Hirth first for offering me the job as VP of Programs and then following her as President. Jan was always there to help me, thank you! The quilt blocks are so much fun, the Surfside logo is outstanding, the back art, quilting and binding are treasures. This was truly an act of love. Nancy Pestal MONTHLY MINI Margaret Arnold [email protected] 949-770-1259 This month's mini is a beautiful mini quilt pieced and machine quilted by Odette Osantowski. Odette chaired the Block of the Month this past year, designing the patterns each month for our "Love of Triangles" projects. She made this mini version and donated it to the Guild. Odette first learned to sew from her mother and made clothing, including gymnastic leotards, as well as home projects while she worked full-time. When she retired in 2001, one of her goals was to learn to quilt. She has become an amazing quilter and we are lucky she is sharing her quilting talent with us this month. Be sure to buy your tickets. $1 for one or 6 for $5. Nancy Bloyer was the winner of the May Monthly Mini - the Logo Quilt made by Maggie Bell . Margaret Arnold 5 BLOCK OF THE MONTH Odette Osantowski [email protected] 949-489-9639 Judy Lawry [email protected] 949-348-0168 Sherry Muetzel [email protected] 949-249-7653 Well, the year of “Love of Triangles” must come to an end. It was a lot of fun designing the blocks, writing the patterns, and seeing the quilts come together. I hope you all enjoyed the process as much as I did. Remember to bring your quilts to the June meeting; we will be showing all your finished quilts during Show and Win. If your quilt is assembled, quilted, bound, and labeled for our June BOM show, your name will be entered into a drawing for $100 donated by the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection. (tops will be accepted for display). Then if you donate your quilt to “Wounded Warriors” or Philanthropy (if your quilt is not patriotic colors), there will be another drawing for $100 donated by Mary Freedman. I can’t wait to see all of your quilts. That one was hand quilted. She made extra blocks so she could start one of her own, but her daughter loved it as well. She had asked for a double wedding ring quilt for her wedding, but she hinted that that was no longer her favorite. This quilt is a wedding gift for her September wedding. Since Becky’s policy is only hand quilting quilts that she keeps and her daughter will most likely be rough on this quilt, she decided to do machine quilting. However, she couldn’t see doing so on her Bernina, so her husband bought her an HQ-16 table top machine. This is the first quilt she quilted on it. She hopes the bride and groom like the quilt. 7 STASHBUSTERS - PHILANTHROPY Sheri Hill, [email protected], 949-492-3788 Barbara Ann Christensen, [email protected] , Roni Trehy, [email protected] , Charlotte Spere, [email protected] Vicki Janis [email protected] 949-842-6089 Our next meeting will be Wednesday, June 18, 10 AM - 2 PM at San Clemente Presbyterian Church, 119 Avenida de la Estrella, San Clemente. + Thank you to the Stashbusters for all their hard work this year. Cheers to good health and happiness! November Fest - 2014 Sharon Whelan Betty Collins [email protected] June is here and it's time to start getting serious about the November Fest. We need quilts and items for baskets. Please start thinking about what you'd like to donate to the Fest to make it a success. Many of our guild expenses are paid by the earnings from the November Fest. To keep the quality of speakers and workshops, our wonderful meeting location, and everything else provided by the guild, we need everyone to participate. It would be great to have a basket donated by every friendship group. Please talk about what your friendship group wants to donate; there will be a sign up list at the June meeting. A big hit at November Fest 2012 was a money tree; other ideas could be a black and white basket, a book and pattern basket, a batik basket, etc. In past years LeAnn Goettel and Sheryl Smith-Bailey have given us the wonderful brunches, however, this year due to other things happening at the same time (new grandbaby) they have both bowed out. Therefore unless someone comes forward we will be partly catering the brunch. We will still ask members to help us by bringing items for the reception before the auction. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer to organize the brunch. We have some new fun things planned for the Fest and a return of the favorites. Betty Collins 9 Two quilts by Ursula Hartunian. The hexagons on the left is from a kit she found at Road. The fabric was in jelly rolls. It was a challenge to put together as it needed very scant seams, but she loves it. The quilt above is a Sandy Klop design that she forgot to bring in April. Ursula loves Sandy’s whimsical, juvenile prints. Katie Dunbar showed her “Haunted House” quilt, which she started in 2006 and made about two blocks a year. Thanks to the UFO group she was inspired to finish it. 10 TREASURER’S REPORT Helene Moser [email protected] 04-01-14 through 04-30-14 Balance Forward: 26355.40 Income: Guests Monthly Mini Recycling Sponsors Workshops Miscellaneous Total Income: 35.00 36.00 15.50 100.00 855.00 25.00 1066.50 Expenses: Facilities Hospitality Block of the Month Operations Philanthropy Wounded Warrior President’s Quilt Programs Certificates Treasurer Workshops Bus Trip Redwork Project Total Expenses: 300.00 77.37 14.58 239.66 257.95 262.34 105.66 1192.88 20.00 59.59 650.00 133.86 16.97 3330.86 Net Income /Loss -2264.36 Current Balance: Monica Shafer showed “Spokes” a quilt she made with a charm pack of Ty Pennington fabrics. She has been obsessed with hexagons and she wasn’t sure how to use them. A grand- mother’s flower garden was too old-fashioned and she wanted to make a modern quilt with lots of negative space. She finally came up with this. Hand appliqued, machine pieced by Monica, quilted by Rags to Riches Quilters. There are so many like-minded people, with talent and expertise to talk to and learn from. So many, in fact, that it’s difficult sometimes to make the kinds of connections that lead to much more than visiting at the monthly guild meetings. Maybe you are new to the guild, or you don’t know many people, or you are a little shy, or you think you need to be a more advanced quilter, or . . . Here’s where Friendship Groups can help. Maggie and Monica will find out your interests and availability and help put you together with other quilters to form a small group that meets in between guild meetings, once a month, twice a month, or whenever the group decides. Wonderful and lasting friendships happen in these small groups; skills are developed and talents shared. Please visit the Friendship Groups table at the June guild meeting and talk to Monica Shafer or Maggie Bell. You can also email them. They will be looking forward to talking with you! 11 WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT Mary Freedman, Chair [email protected] 949-388-6901 Nancy Burch [email protected] 949-582-5333 Carmelle Spruill [email protected] 949-498-1931 Patriotic Bargello Block Size 18 x24 For Background Fabric Cut: B B C A 2---3 ½” X 12 ½” (A) A C A A 4---3 ½” X 4 ½” (B) 4---3 ½” X 8 ½” (C) For Colored Fabrics A C C Cut: A A A B B 6---3 ½”X 12 ½” (A) Pattern for star appliqué on page 13. We really enjoyed seeing them. Our Show and Tell featured 9 presenters with 11 quilts. There will be NO Show & Tell at the June meeting as we will be using the time to show our Block of the Month quilts and having the drawings for the prizes. Vivien Hawker Joan Orris Barbara Graham showed “Wild Kitchen Sink”. Last year she saw a “kitchen sink” quilt at her friendship group and loved it. However, since she can’t seem to use colors that she doesn’t like, this is her version of “kitchen sink”. She enjoys more of a Freddy Moran color scheme. . After a visit with him she e-mailed his children asking for a drawing or greeting to incorporate into a quilt. All 18 family members are represented. She used two of his shirts. The back says “Laughter is the Best Medicine”, but she titled the quilt “Family is the Best Medicine” as they are a close family and all members have been very loving and supportive. Kay Johnstone displayed her “Thimbleberries Quilt”. She won a Thimbleberries kit in November, went home and promptly made the first block. Then she remembered the Thimbleberries quilt she started in 2008, so she decided it should be done first. She was unable to finish the binding because she had shoulder surgery and was only able to start sewing again this weekend. Phyllis Parente made this quilt from a pattern in the book “Quilts for the Modern Home - Simplify” by Camille Roskelly. She is not satisfied with the background color, but feels the wider sashing gives a lift. Right after the meeting the quilt was mailed to her granddaughter for her 12th birthday. 15 SEE US AT THE BCQC QUILT SHOW This quilt was a fund raiser the first year of Surfside’s existence. It was designed and assembled by Diane Collins using signature strips that members paid for. Everyone’s name went into the “hat” and the winner was Chris Huben. She brought it back to the May meeting for us to admire all over again. The money raised was what started our treasury off in good shape. “Dani’s Wedding Quilt” was shared by Monica Shafer. Her niece wanted a quilt as a wedding gift and had beautiful photos taken before the wedding. The newlyweds are young and gorgeous and the photos were perfect. Monica based this design on a Nora McMeeking floor tile design, with pieced signature blocks and photos arranged in opposite corners. There is even a picture of their beloved dog. On the back Monica pieced a cross to represent their Christian faith which is integral to their lives. Pieced and appliqued by Monica with machine quilting done by Rags to Riches Quilters. 16 www.quiltinaday.com 17 SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS - LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE A MEMBER 18 Surfside Quilters Guild, P. O.
