Meet Shania Gregory - Miles River Yacht Club
And a Good Time Was Had by All by Kate Cramblett, Commodore Junior Sail Registration Open “All about You-The Member” was quite evident on January 10-12th, when MRYC had 28 attendees at the 47th Annual Chesapeake Commodore’s Club Commodore’s Ball in Ocean City, MD, and I can tell you a “good time was had by all.” This year’s theme was Your Favorite All Time TV Show so our theme was Love Boat, since Love Boat was our New Year’s Eve theme and we could use some of the same decorations. Our room was extremely popular because of our outstanding decorating job, our outstanding food, and, most especially, the welcoming atmosphere of the room. MRYC has always been known for Marion Haddaway’s oysters on Saturday afternoon, plus we had Beth Brown’s meatballs, Penny Rhine’s French onion soup, Phil Harrison’s oyster stew, and Sue Gardner’s very tasty salsa. We also had some very excellent deviled eggs along with desserts. Judy Gaston and Carol Chisholm did their usual good job with their trivia contest. One of the highlights of our room was the absolutely fantastic bar built by Lee Brown (seen now in the Club’s lobby). It was the talk of the weekend. We were also very lucky to have the very beautiful Melissa Martelli as our bartender – super bar and beautiful bartender – a great combination. Our signature drink of the weekend, a “Purple Vodka Cramblett,” created by our very own Jamie Freeman, was also very popular. One of the biggest benefits that we reap by attending this event is to promote MRYC and show off what great members we have. It gives our members a weekend to get to know members from the other clubs in a casual atmosphere. I can honestly say I believe just about all of the approximately 600 people in attendance visited our room. There were 38 other yacht clubs from around the bay and 16 hospitality rooms. Though several of us attend every year we also had some newbies. What they found was the opportunity to make many new friends and also a chance to get to know their fellow MRYC members better. This event is open to all MRYC members, so stay tuned as I will begin sharing info for 2015 in early June. And the “icing on the cake” – MRYC won Second Runner-Up for Best Hospitality Room and Judy Gaston and I won for “Best Couple Not in a Skit” for my Captain Stubing impersonation and Judy as Seaman Gopher. Registration for this year’s Junior Sailing Program is now open and information is on the MRYC web site. The program will once again have the following 3 two week sessions and 6 one week sessions, our Sea Kids Program, for the younger children (ages 6-8). Session I: June 16th - June 27th Session II: July 7th - July 18th Session III: July 28th - August 8th by Monica Penwell, JSP Director Class instruction includes Opti, Laser and 420 class boats. We encourage everyone to use our on-line registration process – it is our goal is to go paperless this year – and to take advantage of EARLY BIRD PRICING and save $25 a week per student by registering before June 1st. We need housing this summer for coaches, so if you have a guest house, apartment, or home available, please contact me. A tax deduction may be available. (410-3100225 or [email protected]) Save the Date – Our first event, the annual Sock Burning and Auction, is on Saturday, March 22nd. Meet Shania Gregory Shania started with the Club when she was 19, and is now one of the most senior staff. Shania loves working at MRYC, and it shows – she always has a smile on her face. She recalls watching many kids grow up over the years, and recalls the many changes to the Club, especially the renovations. Shania lives in Easton, graduated from Easton High, and attended Chesapeake College. She has a big family and three older brothers. Shania calls herself a “dance Mom” to her four year old daughter who is taking ballet and tap lessons. She loves to spend time with her daughter, meet new people, and read. She likes to swim and work out, and works part time at the YMCA. Say ‘Hi” to Shania next time she greets you with her big smile! The cold wintery weather we just had hopefully marks the mid -point for winter. So it’s good to find some fun things to do while inside this winter. I mentioned last month that a group from the Club was attending the Chesapeake Commodore’s Club (CCC’s) weekend in Ocean City, MD during January. This annual event is a great way to catch up with the other 30 yacht clubs who are members of CCC. Commodore Kate’s team theme for our reception room was “Love Boat.” It seemed that from where we were in our reception room that one could see the ocean surrounding us. The dining table layout in this room looked like the deck on a cruise boat with a feast of great food and hospitality. The MRYC group was thrilled to be awarded as the second runner up for the best club reception area. The reception included some of the MRYC specialties such as Oysters and Oyster Stew, plus other culinary items. Our Commodore was acting as “Captain Stubing” along with her assistant Judy Gaston as “Seaman Gopher.” The two were part of a general entertainment program that each club participated in to celebrate the newly installed 2014 CCC Commodore. MRYC received another award for Commodore Kate and Judy’s skit. The awards truly reflected the enthusiasm and fun loving spirit shown by our group at this event. We have a busy line-up this year the Speaker Series having started in January with Peter Lesher talking about Log Canoes; Frank DeBord in February (the 6th) speaking about getting more speed from you boat; and Alison Buckler, a Chesapeake Bay Tanker Pilot, in March (the 6th) talking about safety issues for boating and her work on the bay. Look for more on these events and bring your friends. This RC is actively planning and making lists for spring events when the Club opens, races start, and celebrating the Fourth of July all happen. If you are wintering where it’s warm I am a bit envious. I hope you have some time to get out on the water. Our spring is on the way. Meanwhile we will enjoy the remaining months in St. Michaels! I look forward to seeing you at the Club. If you haven’t gotten sick with these up and down temperatures lately, keep your fingers crossed to remain healthy! It’s been crazy with fluctuations sometimes 40 degrees from day to day. After the holidays were over and we were all getting back in the groove of the regular work grind, twenty-eight of us from MRYC represented our Club at the Chesapeake Commodore’s Club (CCC) weekend in Ocean City 10-12 January. Once my car was parked upon arrival, it didn’t move until it was time to drive home. It’s almost like being on a boat for the weekend, with no worries about driving or time. This was my second year attending the CCC weekend and my first time as an officer of our Club, Fleet Captain. It was a learning experience as I saw how cruises to our Club get scheduled. Three clubs have “signed up” to cruise to our Club so far. White Rocks Yacht Club and Kent Island Yacht Club plan cruises to MRYC to attend our season opening the weekend of 16-18 May. This should make for a flurry of activity on the water outside our back door, with a true feeling of the boating season taking off. Crescent Yacht Club will be cruising to MRYC for a long weekend over the 4th of July holiday weekend. I was filled with pride for our Commodore as these yacht clubs planned cruises to MRYC at least in part, if not just because they know and respect our Commodore Kate. Meeting folks from all these yacht clubs around the Chesapeake Bay, I was surprised how many don’t know where MRYC is! It’s the only club I’ve known, so how can anyone not know where we are! Well we made the MRYC name known when we won Second Runner Up for the “Best Hospitality Room.” That judging is based not only on how we’ve decorated, but on the overall “feel” of the room. We all had a good time greeting visitors and again felt pride over winning this honor. We’ve started the buzz about MRYC! It’s the time of year to decide about whether you want to renew your slip rental for 2014. You’ve probably seen an email from me if you’re a slip holder, and by now have let Margo know your intentions. Communication is key in any relationship, but especially with so many slips and slip holders, it is imperative that you respond to requests for information in a timely manner. You can always call the Club or call me directly with questions. Please know that we want to make your experience at MRYC a good one. The fun events continue this month including a special evening planned for Valentine’s Day. Take advantage of all your Club has to offer. It’s not just a place for dinner or to keep your boat. If you have questions about anything at the Club with your slip and or boat, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected] or call the office at 410745-9511. Membership Goal – Senior and Intermediate + Waiting List 3 MRYC NEWS & N OTES P/C DEBord Next Winter Speaker by Ron Weber, Sail Chair MRYC logowear – Think about spring Think about spring – think about new MRYC logowear to start the season in style. Take a look at the great new ladies ¾ sleeve cotton polos with collars in the showcase in the lounge or at the Embroidered Images (410-745-6280) shop. And don’t forget, members Charles and Dot Low can personalize any item you purchase with your name, your boat’s name, or whatever else you might like. Ask in the office or at the bar, if you want to purchase an item in the case or visit Dot and Charles in their shop on Fremont Street (behind Acme) to peruse their many catalogs. They can embroider a whole lot more than they can display at the Club! Every purchase you make helps the Club whether you order it at the Club or at their shop. Sailboat Performance 101 How to (Legally) Make Your Boat Faster Speaker: P/C Frank DeBord Thursday, February 6, 2014 6:00PM Reservations at 410-745-9511 Like the New Members’ Name Tags Do you know how to maximize your boat speed in all conditions? To achieve this you have to understand the wind and water forces acting on it, and how your actions can change these forces. This presentation is a practical discussion of things you can do to make your boat faster. It discusses the forces acting on any racing yacht and then provides specific actions you can take to legally improve your boat speed. Examples are given for a typical racer/cruiser, a sport boat and a Star. Frank DeBord is a Naval Architect with more than 35 years of experience analyzing racing yacht performance, including performance optimization for eight America’s Cup defenders and challengers, two Volvo Race syndicates and more than 20 Grand Prix ocean racers. Projects have included course record holders for the Newport to Bermuda, Transpac and Sydney Hobart races. Have you noticed the name badges that our new members are sporting? Well, you can have one too. The Auxiliary is making them available to you for $8.00 for a single or $15.00 for two. They come with a magnetic back but it can also be made with a pin back. Please contact Karen Thomas at [email protected] with your first and last name and the year you became a member. Turnaround time is about two weeks.
