WELCOME TO THE 43RD ANNUAL FIESTA DEL SOL!
Pilsen Neighbors Community Council welcomes your sponsorship for our 43rd annual Fiesta del Sol. This year’s four day event
will take place from July 30th- August 2nd exposing over 1.3million attendees to art, culture and entertainment in Chicago’s
historic Pilsen community. In its 43 years, Fiesta del Sol has grown from a block party to the largest Hispanic festival in the
Midwest.
Fiesta del Sol is Pilsen Neighbors Community Council’s (PNCC) major fundraiser that makes community organizing, leadership
training, and education programming possible throughout the year. Your support is essential in making a positive impact in
the lives of over 5,000 individuals.
Unlike other festivals, Fiesta del Sol is unique in that it does not accept sponsorship from any alcohol or tobacco institutions;
we take pride in attracting a wide variety of companies to our event. Please join us in our efforts this year and take part in
this unique marketing opportunity.
Feel free to give us a call to discuss any ideas you may have for an onsite activation. Our committee is ready to work with you.
Respectfully,
Juan F. Soto

Who We Are
“Accomplishments
Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) just celebrated its 60th anniversary this past year in 2014. For over 40 years, PNCC and Fiesta
del sol have been working with, “Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things.”
After two fires claimed the lives of 17 Pilsen residents, PNCC organized to demand that the Chicago Fire Department hire Latino and Spanishspeaking fire fighters. PNCC won an agreement with the city and 40 Latino firemen joined the ranks that year.
PNCC is a non-profit, community-based organization (1954) whose mission is to work to establish policies and practices in the Pilsen
and Southwest areas of Chicago around the needs of the community. PNCC invests in the development, education funding, including
early childhood education, universal healthcare, older adult social well being and workforce development. PNCC has been historically
instrumental in organizing parents to upgrade school buildings as well as to build new schools to end overcrowding. PNCC currently leads
parent leadership trainings in Pilsen and the Midway area, is now organizing the 9th Pilsen Education Summit.
PNCC is part of an international organization, the Gamaliel Network, a grassroots network of non-partisan, faith-based organizations in
17 U.S. states, South Africa and the United Kingdom that organizes to empower ordinary people to effectively participate in the political,
environmental, social and economic decisions affecting their lives.
As PNCC goes into its 61st year, there are plans to expand its work and continue the legacy. In October 2014, PNCC embarked on a capital
campaign at its 60th celebration and invites you to become a part of the community transformation. PNCC plans to build a state of the art
leadership training institute to educate the next generation of community organizers and leaders.
1990’s - PNCC and community leaders organized to make Fiesta del Sol an alcohol and tobacco sponsorship free event, attracting even more visitors
and being recognized as a family-friendly event.
Long time PNCC board member, Carmen Velasquez breaks ground by founding Alivio Medical Center, to offer affordable and accessible healthcare,
and continues to be an active presence in the community.
In 1994, PNCC wins an agreement from the City of Chicago to replace dangerous vaulted sidewalks in Pilsen.
In a strategy to decrease the number of taverns in Pilsen, PNCC organized to close troublesome and rowdy establishments. The City of Chicago began
by closing and revoking liquor licenses without the right to renew. A moratorium on any new liquor licenses in Pilsen was also enforced.
The Fiesta del Sol Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship Program was created in 1996 to address the financial need of college-bound Latinos in the
Southwest Side. To this date, over $800,000 has been awarded to over 500 students.
Mayor Daley appoints PNCC Board member, Teresa Fraga to the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees. Fraga’s work within the City of Colleges
Chicago in 1995, resulted in the long-awaited Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute was built.
PNCC led a strong and effective organizing effort by demanding a moratorium that resulted in removing 18th Street from the proposed Pilsen TIF.
Accomplishments
1950’s - PNCC is incorporated in 1954.
2000’s - Fiesta del Sol outgrew Blue Island Avenue (its original site) and moved to Cermak Road, and continues to grow along with its community.
PNCC’s work expands into Metro Chicago.
1960’s – PNCC’s focus becomes community organizing on the issue of garbage pick-up and rodent control.
The Pilsen Paseo becomes a vision soon to become reality.
1970’s - PNCC leaders began to put Saul Alinsky organizing into practice with a community vision to build a much needed high school in Pilsen.
2010’s Fiesta del Sol turns 40 years and reaches a mile long! PNCC expands its work evolving into Gamaliel of Metro Chicago and Gamaliel of Illinois.
In 1972, organizing began for a new High School, and after a year of hard work, leaders organized a block party which is now Fiesta del Sol. Finally,
in September 16, 1977 Benito Juarez Community Academy was officially inaugurated.
2014 PNCC celebrates 60 years of community organizing and embarks on capital campaign.
PNCC fought to stop the Chicago 21 Plan, which would have displaced many families East of Ashland. In 1976, PNCC and the City of Chicago came
to an agreement and an alternate plan was embraced for Pilsen.
PNCC’s rehab housing project, a first of its kind to address the issue of abandoned buildings in Pilsen was launched and became its own organization
– which is now Eighteenth Street Development Corporation.
1980’s - PNCC led organizing efforts against redlining by Pilsen banks, and agreements were reached signed to give mortgages to families living East
of Ashland, including advertising in Spanish for the new Hispanic market.

(Limited to 3)
At the Art and Culture Pavilion, we invite local artists (of all avenues) to showcase their love for art. Poets, artists, playwrights,
and composers are often sources of truth, order, harmony, and meaning. Artists can unlock our imagination and stir us to
pause, think, and reflect.
The Children’s Area at Fiesta del Sol is an opportunity where you can provide a fun educational experience for children
and parents in a caring, and stimulating environment. We strive to promote education with read-a-aloud sessions, book
giveaways, games and activities that involve and promote teamwork, sharing, exercise, and creativity. Our goal is to instill in
children a desire to be life-long learners.
The Art and Culture Pavilion also brings art workshops, and activities to engage the community. You will find art and culture
throughout the grounds of the festival, such as with Aztec Dance groups, and arts and crafts. Today, more than ever, the
arts are needed by our young people as a forum for self-expression, communication, exploration, imagination, cultural and
historical understanding.

Romero that is available at the festival grounds every year. The Commemorative Poster is always a vibrant, colorful depiction

Guadalupe A. Reyes Fiesta del Sol Scholarship
Sponsor: $3,000
Going on its 4th year, The Recorrido del Sol 5k Run/Walk is a fundraiser for the Guadalupe A. Reyes Fiesta del Sol Scholarship
Program. Recorrido del sol was the first major running event from the Pilsen community to benefit first generation Latino
college students from Chicago’s Southwest side. This event is done in partnership with the Illinois Dream Fund, a non-profit
organization utilizing private dollars to award scholarships to undocumented immigrants throughout Illinois. The scholarship
seeks to create access to financial resources to further growth and development for the immigrant leaders of tomorrow.
The Fiesta del Sol Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship Program has celebrated 18 years of awarding scholarships to students from

their college expenses. Additionally, the Scholarship Program strives to give students an opportunity to exercise leadership
skills, learn how to build relationship and engage in teamwork. Fiesta del Sol has given over $800,000 in scholarships to over

Besides being a fun and healthy event, the Recorrido del Sol empowers youth through teamwork in organizing and participating
in the event and by helping young Latino students pay for College.
One of eight children born to a family of Mexican immigrants, Guadalupe A. Reyes had little formal education. Despite this,
she devoted her life to improving the plight of children, seniors, and the disabled. After one of her eleven children suffered
severe disabilities caused by spinal meningitis in the 1950s, she began a 50-year campaign addressing the needs of people
with disabilities. In 1969, she established a school for children with developmental disabilities called Esperanza School –
“esperanza” meaning “hope” in Spanish. In 1973, she founded El Valor, which means “courage.”
Teams made up of ten or more represented different companies, organizations and schools to support the cause. The Recorrido
del Sol took place in April at Chicago’s Grant Park with over 400 participants. This year’s race will be held on Sunday, April 12,
2015 from 8am-12pm at Grant Park at Arvey Field.
