Hello, everyone! We’re fresh off the 2014 Family Weekend! It was great to talk with you and learn from you! Please become an AMBASSADOR…. It has been very encouraging to hear many of you reference the AMBASSADORS mailing and talk about your interest in learning more about how you can help. An AMBASSADOR - Represents Beverly Farm at appropriate community events - Distributes Beverly Farm information at fairs or businesses or other settings - Develops media relationships to spread our information reach - Identifies funding opportunities or businesses and others. YOU decide who to talk with, YOU identify where to represent us, YOU connect with media contacts or friends that may know media types, YOU let us know what you are reading or hearing about businesses or others who may help if they got to know us. YOU decide what YOU want to do for us. It’s all about YOU. And BEVERLY FARM. You will find a YES I WANT TO BE AN AMBASSADOR form in this issue. You can enclose (with a donation) in the envelope, or you can send it along with your year-end gift in the next month or so. You can also email or call us. Speaking of year-end giving… This year our year-end appeal and our employee bonus appeal will be combined. You will have the opportunity to designate your gift(s) to either (that’s good) or both (that’s better). You’ll find more information about your year-end giving opportunities in our year-end appeal mailing planned for early to mid-November. You should always have some on hand… Please let us know if you would like to keep several giving envelopes on hand. They will be ready for you to use for memorial or honor or celebration or special occasion giving. They are also good for sharing with others. Martha Warford Joan E. Pace 2 The Volunteer Corner Volunteer Spotlight In a segment new to The Reporter, we will begin highlighting the efforts of the numerous volunteers who donate their time to help make Beverly Farm the wonderful place that it is! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Beverly Farm in any capacity, please contact Ann Taylor in the Development Office at 618-466-0367 ext. 628 or [email protected]. Sandy, Kim, Linda and Joan help package the Holiday Art Cards Matt C. plays a game of Connect Four with a member of the Edwardsville High School Key Club This issue, we are honoring the efforts of one of our younger volunteers, Emani Gage. Emani came to us from Alton High School, where she needed to complete 160 hours of service work in order to obtain her diploma. When asked why she chose Beverly Farm from a long list of organizations, Emani said, “I moved here with my family three years ago and have driven by a few times. I always thought it looked nice, but I never knew what it was. When I found out the kind of work done at Beverly Farm, I thought that would be something I’d be interested in.” Emani Gage, Development Office Volunteer Andrea K. enjoys bocce practice with members of the Edwardsville High School Key Club Starting in early June and finishing her time at the end of August, Emani not only completed her 160 required hours, but actually surpassed it and completed over 174 hours volunteering. She spent her time in the Development Office helping with mailings and marketing packages, and says that her favorite part from her time spent there was the Development Staff. We were certainly sad to see Emani go, but appreciated her time and dedication and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors! 3 Benches Donated in Memory of Lori Landsman Thank you to Leslie Landsman, mother of former Beverly Farm resident Lori Landsman, for your kind donation of five wonderful benches that are enjoyed by many at Beverly Farm. Relaxing on the benches outside of Evans Cottage Beverly Farm Boasts Baseball’s Biggest Fan! A love for baseball runs deep in the St. Louis area, and for Beverly Farm’s Finance Director, Brenda Miller, and her husband Kent of Jerseyville, IL, it has taken them to over 50 major league stadiums in the past 30 years. It didn’t originally start out as a goal to accomplish or a mission to complete, but in 1984, the Millers began visiting various stadiums across the United States to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. Over the years, their baseball road trips grew into a bigger idea, and they decided to see if they could visit every major league baseball stadium, new and old, together. Fast forward 30 years to 2014, and the Millers have been guests at a total of 51 ballparks. Their first trip to the San Francisco Giants old stadium, Candlestick, marked the beginning of their travels for the next 30 years, ending this past August at Marlins Park in Miami, FL. Over the years, Brenda says that the experience “brought Kent and I together, it made us stronger and allowed us to explore cities that we normally wouldn’t have gone to.” Kent has been to 54 stadiums and Brenda has visited 51, keeping their tickets from each as souvenirs. And while their baseball adventure may have come to a close, this pair isn’t done making memories while catching a ballgame anytime soon. Enjoying a nice day on one of three benches found in the Pavillion The Reporter is the bi-monthly newsletter of the Beverly Farm Foundation, a not-for-profit organization serving adults who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We welcome contributions of news of interest to our families and friends. www.beverlyfarm.org Martha Warford, Executive Director Patti Downey, Chairman, Board of Directors Ann Taylor, Community Relations Manager, Editor Kent and Brenda take in a San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park 4 The TLC and Co. Show was ‘Out of This World’ at Family and Friend’s Weekend Another Fall Family and Friend’s Weekend has come and gone, but the excitement hasn’t quite worn off yet. In it’s 19th year, the TLC and Co. put on another wonderful show with an ‘Out of This World’ theme. If you were one of the many who made your way to the show on Saturday, September 27th, then you can testify that it was a night filled with fun and laughter. And for those unable to make it, there is always next year! Over the years, the company has grown to have 70 members with a team of staff who continue to make each year bigger and better than the last. We would like to extend another thank you and congratulations to the members of TLC and Co. and all of the staff, especially Activities Director Krista Kell and Carolyn Mayhall, who put in countless hours to make it such a huge success! “I don’t know what to say……I only know that when I see how happy the family members are, it assures me of why I work at Beverly Farm,” said Carolyn Mayhall, the founder and head of TLC and Co. Softball Teams Celebrate Successful Seasons In only their third season of having a softball program, both Beverly Farm teams qualified for the district competition this past July in Springfield, IL, and the Blue Diamonds advanced to the State tournament in September in Decatur, IL in only their first season of play. Out of the 11 women who play, only two were previous members of Beverly Farm’s co-ed team and seven women had never played competitive softball at all. The Blue Jays might have placed fourth at the District Tournament, but they celebrated first place in their division at the Friendship Tournament in Herrin, IL, and the men have their sights set on winning Districts next year. A highlight for many of the players was the opportunity to play a few games at GCS Ballpark, home of the Gateway Grizzlies, in Sauget, IL. Thank you to all of the coaches, staff, families and friends who have made the softball program at Beverly Farm such a huge success. The future is certainly looking bright for our favorite teams in blue! 5 Beverly Farm Artists Create Artwork for 2014 Holiday Art Cards On Sale Now! It’s never too early to jump into the holiday season, at least the men and women living at Beverly Farm don’t think so! A special ‘Christmas in July’ art club was held to create the images displayed on Beverly Farm’s 2014 Holiday Cards that are on sale now through the website, at the Shopping Complex and in the Development Office. The Art Program at Beverly Farm is one enjoyed by nearly 50 individuals and it has huge benefits for the men and women who participate. The artists in the Art Program enjoy the opportunity to draw and paint and are extremely proud when they are able to showcase their work at the annual I’m an Artist exhibit, on the all occasion cards and now on the 2014 Holiday Cards. The ‘Christmas in July’ session is a favorite among the artists. Beverly Farm artist, Michael W., says that he really enjoyed switching it up from painting his usual favorites, flowers, and getting to paint Santa Claus with the help of the Activities Staff. Jason C. displays his artwork after an Art Club session Activities Director, Krista Kell, said, “There’s something special about our ‘Christmas in July’ session. It might have been over 90 degrees outside, but we had a ball turning on Christmas music and bringing out props to really get everyone in a fun holiday mindset. Our artists really love this particular session, and we are so glad that their work can be enjoyed by all with the holiday cards.” Jason C., whose work is featured on one of the holiday cards, said, “I really like the Christmas session because Christmas is my favorite holiday, so it’s fun to get to pretend like it’s Christmas in the summer.” Beverly Farm’s Holiday Cards are $15 for one pack of 10 and are on sale online at www.beverlyfarm.org/page/news, at the Beverly Farm Shopping Complex and in the Development Office. For more information, please contact Ena Turkic at 618-466-0367 ext. 649 or [email protected].
