Welcome and happy holidays! What better way to ring in the New
Year than by sharing the joy and romance of THE MERRY WIDOW!
Franz Léhar’s classic operetta was my first assignment as director and
choreographer after I began as artistic director of Light Opera Works
in 2005. A lot has happened since then, and I won’t deny that after
nine seasons of shows here I definitely feel more prepared this time
around! Being lucky enough to have both Stacey Tappan and Larry
Adams back to reprise their roles just makes my job easier, and all the more rewarding.
I’m once again happy to welcome many new artists to our company with this production
and always grateful to those who return to us, especially my conductor, Nyela Basney.
And now, let me share an idea with you; I’d like to see what you, our patrons and
supporters, think of it. As I look around this time of year, I see that many theater
companies have a particular show that over the years has become their “holiday show,”
which they perform every year with great success. Would you welcome this idea for
Light Opera Works? Could that show be THE MERRY WIDOW, or do you have any other
favorites you’d like to see? I discuss the future of Light Opera Works with our staff all the
time, but I’d love to hear from you! Drop me an email at rhogenmiller@lightoperaworks.
org., and let me know how you would like to spend the holidays with Light Opera Works.
Happy New Year!

T H E S TO R Y
In Act One, a party is in progress at the Parisian legation of Pontevedro in celebration
of the birthday of the Prince of that tiny Balkan nation. The guests drink to their host,
the Pontevedrin envoy Baron Zeta, who in turn toasts his absent monarch. This is an
important night for Pontevedro: Hanna Glawari, the young widow of one of Pontevedro’s
richest men, will be attending the party. The Baron is desperate that her millions shall
not be lost to his impoverished nation, a very real possibility given the number of French
fortune-hunters hoping to woo and win the wealthy Hanna. All would be well if she
would only re-marry a Pontevedrin. Zeta sees a savior in the secretary to the legation,
Pontevedro’s most eligible bachelor, Count Danilo; he sends his clerk Njegus to track
Danilo down.
Meanwhile, the Baron’s young wife, Valencienne, is carrying on a passionate flirtation
with a Frenchman, Camille de Rossillon, but has thus far managed to rebuff his more
ardent advances, and remain a respectable wife. Undeterred, Camille writes “I love you”
on Valencienne’s fan, which she promptly misplaces.
Hanna makes her entrance, and all the assembled gentlemen swoon over her. She
invites everyone to a party at her house the next day. Soon after, Danilo arrives, having
been somewhat unwillingly rousted from his favorite night-spot, Maxim’s. Before long
he and Hanna meet. It turns out the two are former lovers, but he will not woo her now
since it will class him with all the other men after her money. He does fall in with Zeta’s
plan, but only this far: he contrives to keep the other men at the ball away from Hanna.
As a Ladies’ Choice dance is announced, and the men clamor to be Hanna’s partner,
Danilo brings on a bevy of girls to distract them. Hanna seeks to resolve the situation by
choosing the one man who ignores her, namely Danilo. At first he refuses, then offers
his dance to anyone who will pay 10,000 francs to charity. The other suitors lose interest,
leaving Hanna and Danilo alone. Now it is Hanna’s turn to refuse to dance, but Danilo
finally persuades her.
Act Two takes place the next day, when Hanna’s promised party is in full swing. It is a real
Pontevedrin affair, with folk costumes and national dances. Hanna tells a traditional folk
tale of a wood nymph and a huntsman’s unrequited love for her. Danilo is at the party,
and he and Hanna indulge in some reasonably good-natured sparring. Meanwhile,
Valencienne’s fan (with its written declaration of love) has been sending shock waves
through the Pontevedrin legation. Valenciene herself has managed to persuade her
husband that Camille’s “I love you” was not intended for her, but for another lady. The
gentlemen uneasily ponder their wives’ virtue, and the battle of the sexes in general.

Relations between Hanna and Danilo begin to warm up, as they recall the past, and
indulge in a little more dancing. In the meantime, Camille is still unwilling to take “no”
for an answer from Valencienne. She is once more in possession of her fan, and adds
a postscript to Camille’s message that makes it clear he must give her up. He begs her
for a farewell kiss, and she agrees to join him in the summerhouse, away from prying
eyes. This is observed by Njegus and, when Baron Zeta approaches and tries to enter the
summerhouse himself, the clerk hurriedly reports that it is occupied by Camille and—a
lady. The Baron looks through the keyhole and spies his wife. In the ensuing confusion,
Valencienne manages to slip away by a back door, and Hanna takes her place. Hanna
and Camille step out, and and the quick-witted Hanna presents the Frenchman to the
company as her husband-to-be, clearing Valencienne of suspicion. Stung by Hanna’s
apparent liaison with Camille, Danilo is furious. He storms off, back to Maxim’s, leaving
Hanna sure that he loves her.
In Act Three, we are at Maxim’s. Amid the frolicsome atmosphere of Paris’ renowned
night-spot, all complications are sorted out at last. Njegus sings, the grisettes dance,
Valencienne manages to talk her way out of trouble one last time, Pontevedro is saved,
and, most importantly, Hanna gets her man.
THE MERRY WIDOW (DIE LUSTIGE WITWE) premiered at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna,
