Volume XXXVII, No. 46 The Banner November 19, 2013 NOVEMBER 24 11:00am Worship Three Little Words Luke 23:32-38 Jeremiah 23:1-6 6:00pm Sunday Night Kaffee’ Is Jesus Your World? Colossians 1:11-20 From Your Pastor . . . Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, Last week, I attended the annual meeting of the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. There were a great many things that happened over the course of two days. The worship was wonderful. Our guest preacher for annual meeting was Dr. Ross Clifford from Australia. His messages brought us back to where our strength and our hope are rooted: the resurrected Christ. Christ is as alive today as the day he stepped from the tomb. He is as present today as he was at Pentecost. How uplifting! There was also a report from a committee appointed last year to study the governance structures of Virginia Baptists. Currently, the majority of oversight for the BGAV rests in the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. This board is made up of 98 members who represent every association in the state. This board meets three or four times a year. Each meeting is an expensive endeavor. Bringing 98 men and women from all over Virginia, reimbursing them for mileage, and providing lodging and meals is a major budget expense. Also, if there are major issues that need to be considered between regularly scheduled meetings, they simple have to be put on hold until the next meeting occurs. The study committee recommended that there be a restructuring to make us more nimble and efficient. The recommendation was to form a twenty member Executive Committee made up of BGAV officers and 15 at-large members from all over the state. This group would meet every other month to consider imminent BGAV matters. In addition there would a 120 member mission’s council that would act as liaison between the new executive committee and the 1400 churches that make up the BGAV. The General Association approved the committee recommendations and gave permission to amend the Bylaws to reflect this new structure by the 2014 annual meeting. New officers were elected. This year both the president and second vice-president are from Southwest Virginia. Tommy McDearis of FBC Blacksburg was elected president. Ed Fisher of Bluefield was elected to serve as second vice-president. There was so very much to tell you about. A more complete description of events can be found on the Religious Herald website (www.religiousherald.org) or in paper form. You ought to go at least once in your life. See you Sunday...!
