WORSHIP SERVICES
Shabbat services are continuing at
Har Sinai each and every Friday evening
at 8:00 throughout the summer. Services
are informal and take place in our air
conditioned social hall. During the
summer months the Service is lightly
abbreviated and there is either a very
brief story, sermonette or special
reading. The Service lasts only an hour
and is a good time to come as a family or
share the hour with friends. Either the
Rabbi or Cantor is always present and
they look forward to seeing you on
Friday evenings.
This summer would be an excellent
time to introduce friends and new neigh
bors to Har Sinai. An Oneg Shabbat
fellowship hour follows each Service.
Join us whenever possible during these
summer Sabbaths.

SANCTUARY RENOVATION
Summer time is traditionally a quieter and slower time at Temple. With no Sunday
School to prepare for each week and wake up for, (though, somehow, with Max being
only 15 months, we still manage to wake early every day), few committee and program
meetings to attend at night, only a few S'nai Mitzvah students to meet with and help
prepare for the fall, your rabbi, like most rabbis, looks forward to summer time. While
yes, we still have Shabbat Services every week throughout the summer - and I hope
that you and your family will come to services when you are in town - the pace is
definitely slower.
Sut this summer is different. The Temple is much busier than usual. The office is
working at a frantic pace, preparing for the holidays, the opening of school, enrolling
new families and students, and all the other details that come with helping to run an
almost 500 family congregation.
And this summer, our building is swarming with workmen. Early every day they (we
pray) arrive, and climb up to the roof or onto their scaffolding. The renovation and
refurbushing of our sanctuary is tremendously exciting to watch. Day by day, another
detail is transformed from the world of the architect's blueprints and specs, to the real
world of our sanctuary. When our sanctuary project is completed, I think you will find
that the words of author of our Torah resonate within your soul, "let them make me a
sanctuary, that I might dwell in their midst." None of this, of course could have
happened without your generous support and commitment to our Temple. That so
many of you have responded so generously is a strong statement about our future.
And, summer time is a busy time for membership recruitment. This last year, over 50
new families, most young, with children now in our school joined our congregation.
We are, I think, now the fastest growing congregation in our community. You can be
our best outreach to new, unaffiliated families. Invite your friends and neighbors to
join, or visit with us. Please, call the office with the names of people you think might be
interested in joining Har Sinai Temple.
Lynne, Max and I plan to spend a few weeks later this summer on vacation. The
cantor will be available for any emergencies when we are away. When we are in town,
please stop by Temple, look at the work going on, and say hello.
S'Shalom
Rabbi David Straus

Sanctuary Renovation Update
______
WE DID IT! Thanks to the generous commitment of most of our congregation, our goal of $250,000 needed to refurbish the sanctuary has
been surpassed.
Renovations started on June 10th. At the time of this writing, the new roof is being installed and the painting contractor has begun work in
the Sanctuary.
We have tried to reach every member of our Congregation. Perhaps your line was busy when we called or you were not at home. Additional
monies will be needed, as our work progresses, to take care of those unforseen emergencies. We would hope that every one of our
congregants would have the opportunity to join this list of families which have supported this worthwhile project. Please call in your pledge to
Laura Hofing (215-295-9153 or 609-494-2151), Merv Platt (609-882-4402), or the Temple office (609-392-7143).

It's summer and the Hebrew School is
deserted, but that doesn't mean Jewish
Education should be at a standstill. For
one thing, some of the most effective
Jewish education takes place at home.
Why not include a few Friday evening
services in your summer plans? This
would give the children a chance to
review their Hebrew and stay in touch
with the Temple.
Why not visit the Temple's library for
some Jewish-oriented summer selec
tions? There's plenty there for the history
buff, the sports fan, and the fiction reader.
There are story books for the youngest
kids, and novels that appeal to adults.
One easy and fun way to add to your
children's Jewish knowledge is to sit and
watch videos together. Suggested titles:
Fiddler On The Roof, Yentl, The Chosen,
The Frisco Kid, Driving Miss Daisy, Cast
A Giant Shadow, Exodus.
Many families find it adds a lot to their
vacations to seek out a local synagogue.
They exist where you least expect them!
It's a great way to meet local people while
sharing Jewish fellowship. It can help
kids feel a part of the larger Jewish world.

Sisterhood News and Views
______
FROM THE PRESIDENT
This year has been a productive, successful and hectic year for our Sisterhood. We have provided many services to our Temple and
our members and I feel that we have made a real difference in the quality of life for our Temple.
In serving the needs of our congregation, Sisterhood members have supported the needs of our religious school students during
holiday celebrations. We helped build a succah and gave books to children to help celebrate their birthdays. One of our members
selected and delivered gifts at Hanukkah to our members living at Greenwood House. One member sent notes to congregants
celebrating events or commemorating sorrows in their lives. Sisterhood members help to make Ongei Shabbat festive times. Members
also arrange for pulpit flowers and schedule volunteers to bless Shabbat candles on Friday nights.
We have planned events for our members. Last year Sisterhood arranged a bus trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. An afternoon
of games and lunch was a pleasant afternoon for our members. A .video was shown about Yiddish theater in conjunction with the
Scholar-in-Residence Weekend. The Hanukkah family dinner was very successful and is always enjoyed by our families.
Supporting all these activities is our fund raising. Once again, the Bargain Bin in the fall and in the spring raised a considerable
amount of money. Our members and volunteers made these events possible. This year we have participated in a project sponsored by
ETS in which Sisterhood members Irma Labbok, Daisy Garfunkel, Rosamond Selzer, Ann Grossman, Laura Hofing, Dorothy
Loewenthal, Betty Platt, Babe Barr and Cantor Marshall Glatzer made phone calls to rabbis who had been sent questionnaires by ETS.
This project and the donation made by ETS combined with' funds raised in the past year and in several previous years allowed
Sisterhood to undertake the task of underwriting the installation of an elevator in our building to serve the needs of many of our
members who find the stairs in our building a hinderance to full use of our building. We are delighted and proud to be able to do this for
our Temple. Sisterhood members feel strongly that as an arm of the Temple we should do all we can to contribute to the life of our
congregation and are thrilled to make this gift.
The Sisterhood has many plans for the coming year. Our Board is a very strong one with many wonderful members and I am pleased
to be working with them for another year. We have many exciting plans for new programming as well as continuing to do the things
that are expected of us. Several events that are planned are a trip to Duke Gardens in Somerville, N.J., a mystery night, a trip to Ellis
Island when it reopens and other programs to be announced after the September Board meeting. I am looking forward to working with
all our Sisterhood members in the fall.
Phyllis Miller

It's surprising how many people tell us
they haven't joined Har Sinai Temple for
one simple reason!
THEY'VE NEVER BEEN ASKED!
Many people you know and love - rel

affiliating with us for much the same
reason.
