Mississippi RiverWalk Amenities: This nature trail runs from Princess Street to Anthony Curro Park. This is Nature Trail 1 on the selfguided walking tour. Follow the trail to learn about Smiths Falls limestone, the Hackberry trees, and finish by viewing beautiful Arklan Island. This trail is perfect for the history buff, or anyone wanting to learn a bit more about our town’s unique location. Enjoy the smells, sights and sounds of the Mississippi River. O-Kee-Lee Nature Trail A spacious nature trail, perfect for dog-walking or jogging. Hendry Farm Park Location: Preston Drive Amenities: A great walk that children will enjoy, including a playground and swings! (not municipally maintained) Riverside Trail This is Nature Trail 2 on the self-guided walking tour. Discover the historic Carleton Place Canoe Club, learn about the downtown, and finish up at the scenic town boat launch. Trans-Canada Trail The Trans Canada Trail is a proposed 18,078 km recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory, linking 800 communities on route. The local section of this trail starts at the intersection of McNeely Avenue, just off of Hwy. 7 and Coleman Street. The Rotary Centennial Trail Enjoy a 7 km stroll along the Mississippi, connecting the village of Appleton to Carleton Place. This trail showcases the varied landscapes beside the picturesque Mississippi River which was once the mainstay of the textile trade in the area. This trail runs just below the McNeely Avenue Bridge at Highway 29 to the junction of Hillcrest Drive and River Road in Appleton. Public Parks and Playgrounds Riverside Park This park is located on the west end of John Street and runs along the Mississippi River. It includes two boat launches, a beautiful beach, large picnic area, and a splash pad for children. St. James Park, Bell Street Located along the north side of the Mississippi River, enjoy sitting and watching the river flow by. This park is more adult oriented, and does not feature a children’s play area. Commons Park Located at the intersection of William and Bell Street, this park offers play structures, a basketball court, and benches for parents. Ferrill Park Located on Thomas Street, this park offers a safe playground for children, complete with a variety of creative play equipment and lots of space for running and jumping. Centennial Park On the north side of the Mississippi River, Centennial Park includes a place to swim, a picnic area, and a soccer field. Findlay Park, Charlotte Street This Park combines a play area for children with a shuffle board and relaxation area for senior citizens. Benches have been installed at this location. Memorial Park, Franklin Street This park lies in the centre of town right beside the library, a perfect place to sit and reflect. The cenotaph is located in this park. McNeely Park Located in Mississippi Manor on Alexander Street, this park includes play structures, swings, large picnic area, and a basketball court. There is also an outdoor rink in the winter months. *New playstructure coming soon! Hackberry Park Located on historic Mill Street this park features the rare and beautiful Hackberry tree, thought to be a legacy from our nomadic First Nations Peoples. Enjoy a picnic along the Mississippi River with a view of the dam. Hendry Farm Park Located on Preston Drive, this park features a children’s play area with swings. Also, it is conveniently located near a small wooded area. Anthony Curro Park Located in the Mississippi Quays subdivision, the park includes play structures, swings, a basketball court, and a nature trail that runs alongside the river. Westview Park Located on Dunham Street, there is a play structure for children, an adult basketball court, and a basketball court for children. Begley Street Park This Park includes a play structure designed for all abilities. Willoughby Park, King Street Located on King Street, Willoughby Park has a structure designed for all abilities. Carleton Place Dog Park- New! Located at the end of Edmund Street behind the Carleton Place Pool, this fully enclosed park also has bench seating and garbage cans. Johnston Street Park Located on Johnston Street, this park offers a safe playground for children, complete with a variety of creative play equipment. Town Hall Square Formally known as Legacy Park. Located just behind the Town Hall on Mill Street, Town Hall Square is situated right on the Mississippi River. Please contact Youth Centre for current hours. Recreational Youth Program Located at 351 Bridge Street at the Carambeck Community Centre, this program is available to children 10 -14 years of age. It is High Five accredited and it focuses on fun and encouraging children’s independence while still providing supervision. Children can attend the Youth Program from any school in Carleton Place before and/or after school as well as in the summer. The cost is $11.00 for either a morning or afternoon session and $27.00 per day during the summer. The children have help with homework, do group recreational activities, field trips and have young leadership opportunities. Just across the river from Riverside Beach is Centennial Beach. Enjoy the day relaxing in our picnic area and cooling off in the Mississippi. Both beaches are open from mid June to the end of August. During this time, lifeguards are on duty from 11:00am – 7:30pm. A public boat launch is available at the west end of Lake Avenue. Fees are as follows: Single day: $7.00 Season pass (resident of Carleton Place): $40.00 Season pass (non-resident): $80.00 Season passes can be purchased at the Town Hall, 175 Bridge St. Town Hall is open 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. Single day passes can be purchased at the boat launch. Public Dock The Town has docking at Riverside Park, near the Lake Avenue West boat launch. There is also a municipal dock located off the public parking area across from the Town Hall on Bridge Street. Carleton Place Canoe Club 179 John Street, P.O. The operations of the club centre around the sport of Flatwater, and Sprint Canoe Racing, yet the club and the facility that it is housed in, offers a wide range of sporting and/or recreational activities. Programs operated by the club itself include racing and recreational canoe instruction, as well as adult programs which include Dragon Boat racing. Please note that hours may be reduced due to inclement weather or beach closure due to pollution. Water quality is tested by Leeds, Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit. Ball Diamonds The Town of Carleton Place has 5 baseball diamonds that are available for leagues and rental. The Brick Dust, Civitan and 180 diamonds are located in front of the arena. The Lion’s Club diamond is located behind the arena (parking available in the Curling Club parking lot). The McLaren diamond is located at Carleton Place High School. If you would like to organize a league, rent a diamond or the batting cage, please contact the Recreation and Culture Department at 613-257-1690. Daycare Splash Pad An exciting service offered to the community for the summer is the option to rent the play yard with splash pad for birthday parties on weekends. The cost to do so is $45.00 per hour and which includes a staff person’s time to come in for supervision purposes. If you have an interest, please feel free to contact us at 613-2530597. Erected in 1872 as the original town hall, the building was home to the community offices, an upstairs meeting hall and a lock up. Converted to a school in 1879, it served the community as Victoria Public School until 1969. Wheelchair accessible. Admission by donation. Carleton Place Community Labyrinth Come and visit our Grass Labyrinth which is cared for by the Labyrinth Committee, a sub-committee of Carleton Place in Bloom. All are welcome to walk the outdoor grass labyrinth at any time. The labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool which has been used for over 4000 years. The labyrinth pattern is similar to a circle, one of nature's most basic forms, a symbol of harmony, wholeness, grace and transformation. One entrance point guides the walker through a series of switchbacks that leads eventually to the center of the pattern. They are located on Alexander Street in McNeely Park, Anthony Curro Park located in Stonewater Bay, Woolgrowers lot in front of OPP/Ocean Wave Building and at the Carambeck Community Centre. Without the support of volunteers; the residents of Carleton Place would not have the opportunity to participate in this great outdoor activity. Market Square Pavilion The Market Square Pavilion is home to exciting events such as the Farmer’s Market, CP Cruise Nights and Music at the Market. It is equipped with washroom facilities, electricty and water access, and a beautiful roof to provide shade and protect any event from rain or snow. Riverside Park Calendar The Community Programming Initiatives SubCommittee are starting a Riverside Park Calendar Initiative that will be an user friendly online calendar of all activities taking place at Riverside Park. This initiative is designed to provide awareness of the many wonderful activities taking place at Riverside Park, as well as encourage others to start their own. The Roy Brown Society are building a collection that tells the incredible story of Capt. A.Roy Brown and many other world War I Fighter Aces that came from Carleton Place. Roy Brown is the pilot officially credited with the downing of the famous German Ace, Baron Manfred Von Richtofen. This was a major event in World War I. The Roy Brown Society, along with the citizens of Carleton Place are keen to ensure that this story is not lost in time.
