2014 Annual Report
Another
amazing year
for
YouthServe!
2014 was a banner year for
YouthServe, but only the beginning of
great things to come.
2014 NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR
In October, YouthServe had the honor
of being named the 2014 Non-Profit of
the year with a budget under
$500,000 by the Birmingham
Business Alliance. In a ceremony
attended by hundreds of
Birmingham’s most influential in
business, the award was accepted by
YouthServe Board Chairman, Dick
Berliner and Executive Director,
Jennifer Hatchett.

CARDBOARD CONNECT - MARCH
Urban Service Camp 2014
Nearly 80 youth participated in
this summer’s Urban Service Camp,
some actually coming to more than
one! Learning themes included the
importance of healthy living and
access to healthy food in every
community. Service sites were the
PEER Summer Feeding Program,
Community Food Bank, Jones
Valley Teaching Farm, and the
YWCA. Campers either walked or
rode public transportation to get to
all their sites, some with bus stops
more than a mile away! All youth
surveyed mentioned the significant

impact of the service as well as
their experience with
Birmingham’s public transit.
Urban Service Camp is the most
transformative of all YouthServe
programs and over 90% of the
Youth Leadership Councils
participating in the 2014-15 school
year also attended Urban Service
Camp.
TOYS FOR TOTS - DECEMBER
In May, YouthServe held its very
first summer programming
introduction event, Party in the
PARTY IN THE TUNNEL
Tunnel, with 400 in attendance from
over 60 schools. With a simple goal
to bring youth from across the city
together downtown for dancing and
fun, YouthServe also managed to
celebrate the accomplishments of the
Youth Action Council and Youth
Philanthropy Councils there. In
addition, summer programming was
introduced as was many other
summer volunteer opportunities
from YouthServe Partners such as
the Firehouse Shelter, Birmingham
STAIR, McWane Center and the
Birmingham Museum of Art. Plans
are currently in the works to reprise
the event. If you are interested in
sponsoring or helping with planning
for the event, please contact Jennifer
Hatchett at (205) 521-6651 or
[email protected].

GOODRICH LEADERSHIP GRANT
This fall, the Mike and Gillian Goodrich
Foundation awarded YouthServe with a
Leadership Grant of $120,000 over three
years, in part to support a Development
Manager for the organization. The new
staff position will help ensure a stable and
sustainable financial future in which more
youth will not only participate in the joy of
SERVICE EDUCATION
Service Education is a very important part
of YouthServe’s outreach to students
across the metro region. Through the
introduction of curriculum by volunteers
and staff designed to enlighten, enlist and
engage as many as 1500 students annually,
YouthServe provides the tools they need to
become active citizens in their own
communities. If you are interested in
volunteering in a classroom for any of these
programs, please contact Daniel Ross,
Program Director, at 205-521-6651 or

SURVEY
YouthServe Alumni were
surveyed in July, 2014 to gage
how YouthServe has shaped
their lives. Answers were
very similar across the board.
Alumni felt YouthServe helped
them become more
confident.
“YouthServe was my first
significant exposure to
communities, issues, and
challenges outside my own.
Through my continued
involvement with YouthServe, I
formed meaningful connections
to Birmingham and a more
informed, intelligent outlook on
the community and its future”YouthServe Alumni (1998-2005)

Together, the YouthServe team strives to provide the
most valuable experience for the participants of each
program. Plans are underway for the biggest YouthServe
yet for 2015. Look for a new advanced Mini-Camp this
summer for veteran campers. In addition, a host of open
summer service days are on the calendar with a number
of new partners, including the Birmingham Police
Department.
