DOCK TALK
As summer approached Port Colborne, Sugarloaf Marina was prepared for another great season
On June 1st we had our annual Boat Show.
The weather co-operated, and there was a
great turnout from the public. The amount of
boats for sale was higher than previous
years.
On June 16th, families came out to enjoy a
fun-filled morning at the Kid’s Fishing Derby. The event was a great way to celebrate
Father’s Day while enjoying some good old
Lake Erie fishing in Canada’s newly acclaimed Ultimate Fishing Town.
On June 24th, the Lake Erie Interclub
Cruise arrived at Sugarloaf Marina. A total
of 54 boats came into the marina that day.
Later that evening, a dinner was hosted by
the Sugarloaf Sailing Club under the
pavilion. It was a fun and exciting day for
both the boaters and the staff.
On June 14th the summer events kicked off
as the Chamber of Commerce held their
Lobster and Laughs event underneath the
pavilion. The sold out event featured a night
of great food and even better memories
made.
Weed Harvesting began on June 17th and
has been a steady 3-4 day a week operation
throughout this summer. Every day of cutting is mapped and cataloged for strategic
attack against this ever growing nuisance.
On June 15th Border Pass kicked off their
season by welcoming participants and spectators from all over Southern Ontario to their
Triple Crown Event.
From June 21st to June 23rd, Erie Tracker
Outfitters held their Budweiser Can-Am
Walleye Challenge at Sugarloaf Marina. Art
Waines and his team “WainSea,” won the
title as champions with the catch of six fish
weighing in at a total of 47.24 pounds. After
a long day of fishing, a barbecue for the fishermen was held under the pavilion on the
Saturday evening. It was a fun-filled weekend for all. The entire event was a true testament to Port Colborne’s title as WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town.
We are pleased to announce Port Colborne as the Ultimate Fishing Town!
On June 28th, The World Fishing Network (WFN) came to the marina for the Ultimate Fishing Town Celebration. Although the weather did
not exactly co-operate, it was still a great turnout. Mayor Vance Badawey hosted the event and gave a warm welcome to Mariko Izumi (WFN
representative), who presented the cheque for $25,000 to our city. During Mariko’s stay in Port Colborne she went fishing out of Sugarloaf
Marina and caught her personal best Walleye. The day featured a kids casting contest organized by the Port Colborne Conservation Club and
some tasty perch sliders catered by Don Cherry’s. It was a great day for both the marina and Port Colborne!
Flavours of Niagara took place from June
29th to July 1st. It was a great weekend for
the marina as transients came in to experience all that this event has to offer. Food and
Wine vendors were open and serving from
12:00 noon to 10:00 pm. A number of bands
performed during the days and nights. The
weekend concluded with the showing of the
annual fireworks from the canal bank. It was
a beautiful end to a spectacular weekend.
Ontario family fishing week began on July 6th and
continued until July 14th. During this week, no
fishing license is required, so keep this in mind for
next year as it is a great opportunity to spend quality
time with your family while enjoying the fishing that
Port Colborne has to offer.
This seasons Sugarloaf Marina “She’s a
Biggun” walleye contest kicked off on July
6th with Ron Bosak’s first catch. The contest
closes August 30th so make sure you contact
the Marina office when you get back from a
great day of fishing. Have us weigh your top
three walleye caught throughout the season.
Winner will receive $200 off next years
dockage.
On Tuesday July 9th, the Canal Days Media
Launch took place at Sugarloaf Marina with
all of the major sponsors and local media in
attendance.
On July 13th, Boarder Pass held their annual
“Roots Wake Series Boarder Pass Open”
here at Sugarloaf Marina. It was an excellent
turnout. Wake boarders came from all
around to participate and put their skills to
the test in this great event.
On July 9th, the Naval Ship HMCS Glace
Bay was docked along the canal and caught
the eye of many residents and visitors.
Guests got to enjoy tours aboard this incredibly beautiful ship.
On Friday July 19th Boarder Pass held their Fearless Females event sponsored by Fox. Participants of all levels
enjoyed wakeboarding; stand up paddle boarding, yoga, massages by Hands on Health, and a
catered lunch by the Smokin’ Buddha. The event recognized and celebrated the talent of lady
boarders.
On Saturday July 20th, POCOMAR celebrated their 25th anniversary underneath the
Pavilion. Those who attended enjoyed a delicious pig roast and live entertainment by
the band True Story.

Canal Days 2013!
From July 21st to August 2nd, Sugarloaf Marina was preparing for Port Colborne’s 35th annual Canal Days. This annual event has always
attracted many boaters into our marina, and that truth remains accurate this year. Sugarloaf Marina had one of its busiest weekends from
August 2nd-5th, as boaters from all around came to enjoy the Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival in Port Colborne. Though the windy
weather forced some boaters from
the United States to halt their trip,
Sugarloaf Marina still came close
to full capacity. Ice, pop, chips
and souvenirs were selling like
hotcakes. Boaters were happy to
have access to the car show and
various other activities that
happened right on site at H.H.
Knoll Park.
The boaters got a million dollar
view on Sunday night as they were
able to watch the fireworks right
in the comfort of the marina. Some
boaters participated in the annual
Boat Parade of Lights, which occurs right before the fireworks
begin. The boat parade is always a
fun event for boaters to participate
in. Overall, it was another successful weekend here at the marina.
The staff enjoyed the happy faces
that filled the marina and the boaters experienced a very enjoyable
long weekend.
Working with Our Community, Caring for Our Cats ~ 700 cats enrolled to date!
Port Colborne Feline Initiative (PCFI) and Sugarloaf Marina would like to thank all who recycle their
alcohol beverage cans and bottles. They are collected from our recycling bins and the deposit returns go
to help the stray cat population in Port Colborne. Four years ago the Marina alone had over 60 stray cats
that were causing a lot of damage to boats and the Marina grounds.
Established in June 2009, Port Colborne Feline Initiative (PCFI) is a registered charity that seeks to
address the issue of Port Colborne's community cat population in both a humane and fiscally
responsible manner via a number of resources including trap-neuter-vaccinate return, subsidized neuter
and kitten socialization and foster programs.
Stop by the Marina office and enjoy a
savory cup of your favorite hot
beverages!

Sugarloaf Marina Fuel dock keeps the ethanol out to keep the fun in
There has been a lot of news in
recent years about the impact of
ethanol blended fuel on marine
gasoline engines. Ever since the
widespread introduction of
ethanol blended fuel in 2006,
many boaters have experienced
engine performance problems
that were directly related to the
added ethanol in gasoline.
What is Ethanol and Why Does
it Cause Problems?
Although ethanol blended
gasoline has caused little to no
issues on cars, the use as marine fuel has caused quite a few problems for boat owners.
The problems are mainly linked to the fact that ethanol is a solvent that can react with
boat fuel tanks, fuel filters and carburetors causing an engine-stopping sludge.
The ethanol solvent interacts with water that forms from condensation that commonly
gathers in a partially full fuel tank. Because ethanol is a hygroscopic, it attracts and
attaches to any water in a fuel tank, creating a clogging sludge that is problematic for
fuel filters, carburetors and engine parts. Fiberglass fuel tanks typically found in older
boats are made with a thophthalic resin that can also react negatively with ethanol
blended gasoline. The sludge build up can cause performance issues, ongoing repair or
maintenance issues and can even ruin an engine.
Ethanol Related Boat Engine Problems
Save Lives, Learn CPR! The Red Cross held a
certification course here at Sugarloaf Marina on
Saturday August 17th. The course ran from 9am3 pm. Participants received a 3 year CPR/ AED
Level C certification. The course was only $67.00.
The use of ethanol blended gasoline can wreak havoc on your boat engines if not
carefully monitored. To limit the impact of ethanol problems in boat engines, consider
these precautions:
-Don’t let ethanol gasoline sit in fuel tanks. Ethanol gasoline sitting too long in a fuel
tank is more likely to absorb water and cause problems. Use fuel within 90 days and
refuel often to prevent problems.
-Keep up with maintenance. Be sure to change fuel filters and maintain a clean
carburetor to limit sludge build-up caused by ethanol in your boat engine.
-Address issues quickly. When performance problems persist, such as a continually
fouled carburetor, consider taking the proactive measure of draining a fuel tank and
refueling.
-Cleansing your fuel tank of any gasoline impacted by ethanol may save you from
bigger issues like a destroyed boat engine.
This is why Sugarloaf Marina goes the extra step to offer ethanol free mid grade
(89 octane) gasoline at our pumps. We want you to enjoy your time on the water and
not get stuck on the hard.
During the Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival, Port Colborne Lighthouse Tours were held outside of Sugarloaf
Marina. People that attended the tours were able to enjoy
breathtaking views while being given the opportunity to
walk the historic steps of the lighthouse keeper and climb
the beacons. It was a great success.
As the sun begins to set on another great season at Sugarloaf Marina we would like to thank all of our
customers for choosing to dock and visit us this summer. Our goal is to provide our customers with
the finest, most relaxing and worry free experience that you can have on the water.
When stepping on to our docks you can leave the day to day hustle & bustle behind and enjoy the

past season and encourage you to give us feedback so we can better your experience to make next
year an even greater season. Please take the time to fill out an upcoming survey and return it to us for
a chance to win a marina gift package. Sugarloaf Marina thanks you for your loyalty and looks
forward to assisting you and your vessel next season.
