These include essay questions and short answer responses that cannot be graded automatically and often do not have precise answers. This feature of the program equips professors and instructors with a tool for grading context-based exams called comments. The purpose of using comments for grading is to allow instructors to address each student’s response individually through embedded input. Comments can be placed anywhere within a student’s response to address any constituent (from punctuation to the paragraph) of the essay or short answer. This guide will introduce you to two different commenting tools Chi Tester features, “Selection Comments” and “Quick Comments”. It will also instruct you on how to create and use comments that will make grading context-based exams thorough and efficient. iii CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING Getting Started This section describes how to access the manual grading feature from the Chi Tester homepage. 1) To begin grading a test manually, select a test from the list in the "My Exams" tab on the home screen, and click "Manage selected exam" on the right-hand side of the page, as illustrated below. You will then be directed to the "Manage Exams" page for this test (shown in step 2). 1 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 2) The manual grading feature of Chi Tester is located under the “Manage Results” section in your “Manage Exams” tab as show below. It is titled "Manually grade student responses/essays." Click it. 2 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 3) You will now be prompted with the questions below. These questions show options about how to structure student responses for grading. The first option (shown below) focuses on grading one question at a time as opposed to one test at a time. "Show all of the responses for one question on a page" means the layout of the next screen will show all of your students' responses submitted for each question until you've reached the last question. "Show all of the responses for one test attempt on a page" means the layout of the next screen will show one student's entire test displaying both questions and responses. 3 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING (step 3 cont'd) The next option (shown below) is to choose specific questions to grade. This allows you to grade questions that weren't graded automatically. For example, if you have a test with both multiple choice and essay questions, at this step the multiple-choice questions would have already been graded. You will want to select this option to exclude those questions. You also have the option to only grade specific questions. Once selected, this option will let you pick the questions you want. Lastly, there is the option to grade specific question types. Selecting the last two options will hide the students' name to achieve blind scoring, and hide responses that have previously been manually graded. 4 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING (step 3 cont'd) Once you've selected the options you want for this test, click Grade Responses (shown below.) This will begin the grading process using the commenting function of Chi Tester manual grading. 5 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING Selection Comments This section describes what “Selection Comments” are and how to use them. What Are Selection Comments? Selection Comments (i.e., "Comments for selection") are used for specific parts of each student’s response. These comments address grammar, word usage, and punctuation. They can also be used to comment on a student’s ideas, thesis, and details in the response. How to Use Selection Comments 1) To correct or comment on one constituent of the response (punctuation, word, sentence, etc.) highlight it by holding down your cursor and dragging it across the selection. –orTo comment on the entire response click at the end of the response. Both ways will display the comment box, as shown below. 6 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 2) Write your comment in the section titled “Comments for selection.” Then click Done. Your comments will appear in blue text and parenthesis embedded beside the selection you’ve addressed (shown below.) Note: The selection remains highlighted in the response so that students understand exactly where the comment was addressed. 7 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 3) To edit or remove any Selection Comment while outside of the comment box, click on the comment. The comment box will appear. Edit your comment accordingly, or click Remove to remove the entire comment. Then click Done. 4) Click Save Grading at the top of the screen as shown below. Caution: Before moving on to the next question/test, always click the Save Grading button at the top of the page to save all of your progress; otherwise, your comments will be lost and must be redone. 8 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING Quick Comments This section describes what “Quick Comments” are and how to use them. What Are Quick Comments? Quick Comments are divided into two types: “General Comments,” and Test Comments (i.e., “Comments for this test”). “General Comments” are for creating general statements that are used often throughout the grading process; from student-to-student and response-toresponse. These comments are much like Selection Comments, but can be saved and used across different exams you create. Test Comments (i.e., “Comments for this test”) are used for test-specific comments, or any comments that apply to the entire test. This function can be used to give a summary of your grading, including what the student did well or needs to improve. These comments can only be used on one exam, and are not accessible in other exams you create. 9 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING How to Use Quick Comments 1) Click beside the portion you want to address. The comment box will appear. 2) In the “Quick Comments” section, click New as shown below. 3) Title your statement for your own reference (e.g., “Praise,” or “Word Choice”). Type your comment, and then click either Add to general or Add to this test to create a general or a test comment, respectively. See the image below for an example. 10 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 4) After you click Add to general or Add to this test, the comment box will look as shown below. Only the title of the comment will appear in the General and Test comment sections. Note: When you use one of these comments, the actual text (not the title/name of the comment) will appear in the response. 5) To re-use one of your comments, first click on the place in the response where you want the comment to appear. The comment box will appear. 6) Click the statement you want to use from the “Quick Comments” section. Click Use as shown below. 11 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING Like Selection Comments, “Quick Comments” will appear in blue text in parenthesis, as shown below. 12 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING 7) You can also edit or delete a “Quick Comment.” Simply select the desired comment in the response to bring up the comment box. Select the comment from the “Quick Comments” section (if not already highlighted), and click Edit or Delete, as shown below. 8) Click Save Grading at the top of the screen as shown below. Caution: Before moving on to the next question or test, always click the Save Grading button at the top of the page to save all of your progress; otherwise, your comments will be lost, and must be redone. 13 CHI TESTER MANUAL GRADING Final Steps Exiting the Chi Tester manual grading application is simple.
