AWARDEES 2010
Peace-It-Together® Community
Initiative Peace Partner Awards
Sisters of Mercy, Pittsburgh
The Sisters of Mercy are an international
community of Roman Catholic women vowed
to serve people who suffer from poverty,
sickness and lack of education with a special
concern for women and children. In 1831, the
Sisters of Mercy were founded upon the
objectives, “the instruction of poor girls, the
visitation and care of the poor sick, and the
protection of women in distress.”
CATHERINE MCAULEY
Catherine McAuley, who founded the
community, reached out to women in need
of safety, health care and education. Through the years, her
followers have emulated her example by involving themselves in
ministries which seek to relieve suffering and address its causes.
Continually adapting themselves to present day needs and
situations, today the sisters extend the reach of mercy through
networking with other groups whose focus is similar to theirs—
women’s groups; faith/interfaith, peace and social justice groups
and women in public leadership positions.
Currently, the Sisters of Mercy of Pittsburgh are involved in social
service ministries, such as “The Intersection” in McKeesport and
co-sponsor transitional housing for women and their children in
need at Sisters’ Place in Clairton, Pa. The Sisters also support
projects aimed at non-violence through McAuley Ministries and
address the education needs of women through Carlow University—
a woman-centered campus. They epitomize how an organization
can support peace building efforts across many communities.
Ronell Guy
Through her passion, hard work, and
dedication, Ronell Guy has forged new
ground in working with low-income people
of color to achieve both justice and peace.
In 1998, she started what would become
Northside Coalition for Fair Housing, founded
on the premise that families and individuals
have a responsibility to create living
environments that are safe, livable, beautiful
RONELL GUY
and sustainable. From 2001 to 2008, Ms.
Guy worked as the Western PA Director for
the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania to bring quality homes
within the reach of all low-income residents. In 2006, she
partnered with the Service Employees International Union and
the Unite Here Union and formed a new organization, Pittsburgh
United. This organization was created to win community benefits
from the developers of the new arena and casino in Pittsburgh,
which were receiving public subsidies for their projects. After
months of negotiation, Pittsburgh United acquired a historic
Community Benefits Agreement, and passed prevailing wage
legislation in the city of Pittsburgh both firsts in the state
of Pennsylvania.
Most recently, in both 2008 and 2009, Ms. Guy has been
organizing the “Women’s Walk for Peace” which has included
over 1,000 walkers. Ronell Guy demonstrates how powerful
grassroots initiatives can be to community peace building and
social justice work.
Debra Germany
Debra Germany is the Executive Director of
Divine Intervention Ministries—a faith-based
organization dedicated to restoring the lives
of incarcerated adults and at-risk youth.
Her life changed on July 9, 2001 when
her only child, Raymond Germany, was
murdered—shot seven times in the Hill
District neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Through
the death of her son, she says, Divine
DEBRA GERMANY
Intervention Ministries was “birthed in her
spirit.” Mrs. Germany truly believes that if
you have God in your life, you can do the impossible, reach the
unreachable, and bear the unbearable.
Divine Intervention Ministries began by using billboards to bring
attention to unsolved murders and finding community solutions to
crime. It also sought to soothe grieving family members who had
lost a loved one to violence. In 2006, Divine Intervention Ministries
changed its direction to focus on restoring the lives of incarcerated
young men and at-risk youth and launched the IMPACT Program
(Interceding Making Positive Actions Come Together). Mrs. Germany
is a Convener for the Pennsylvania Prison Society & the Director of
Prison Ministries Services for Central Baptist Church of Pittsburgh.
She is a much sought-after popular speaker. She travels across
Pennsylvania to speak to at-risk youth and incarcerated adults
in boot camps, prisons, churches and public schools. Debra
Germany’s commitment to helping others survive the depths of
grief, address the impact of violence, and rebuild their lives with
a new purpose and vision is her special gift to peace building.
The Neighborhood Academy
The Neighborhood Academy, a member of
The Pennsylvania Association of Independent
Schools; is a non-sectarian, faith-based high
school for low-income students in grades
8-12. The curriculum is focused on reading,
writing, math and critical thinking, as well
as lab sciences, Spanish and visual arts.
Additionally, after-school athletics and arts
programming are included in this “whole
REV. THOMAS E.
person” approach to the student’s education.
JOHNSON JR.
In order to help students to succeed
academically, they also provide counseling, transportation,
meals and assistance with emergency needs like medical care.
One of the unique features of The Neighborhood Academy is
its commitment to serving the spiritual life of the students and
their families. They believe that spiritual development is an
essential part of healthy adolescence. Now in its ninth year
with approximately eighty students, so far all of the graduates
have proceeded on to college.
The Neighborhood Academy is dedicated to developing the
minds, bodies, and spirits of students while trying to break the
cycle of generational poverty. A major focus of their program is
to remove barriers to success and help the students acquire
the skills needed for success in school and in life. The
Neighborhood Academy creates opportunities for their students
to lead successful, non-violent lives as they develop into our
future leaders.
