Columbia will be the host city for our 23rd Annual Educational Conference of the Association of
Sewing and Design Professionals. I didn’t believe there could be a city more beautiful and more
“green” than my own Portland, Oregon! I still don’t believe it but I am biased. Even so, the call
of the natural beauty of Vancouver with the promise of celebrating our 25th year as a trade
association for sewing and design professionals makes this year’s conference a “must attend.”
Join us in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for our first international conference, exciting
new ideas to expand your focus and broaden your horizon! Superb speakers, hard to find
educational opportunities, the ASDP/Threads Challenge and the vendor marketplace will
motivate and inspire. We will honor our Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Connie Crawford,
at the annual banquet. The annual voters’ meeting will chart our course with the election of

Two Day Preconference Master Classes
Custom Tailored Jacket – Susan Widawski
Sharpen and refine basic sewing techniques by learning the Standards of Tailoring. Traditional
European custom tailoring techniques will be used to construct a half of a full scale jacket.
Emphasis will be placed on custom tailoring techniques such as: application of hair canvas, twill
tape, shoulder and back stays, interfaced tailored hems, hand worked buttonhole, welt pocket,
and assembling and setting of sleeve. Hand sewing techniques taught will include: padstitching,
slip stitch and tailor’s hemming stitch. Additionally, custom tailoring terminology and features
will be discussed.
Brief Bio: A professor at Wayne State University in the
department of Fashion Design and Merchandising, Susan holds
an MA from Wayne State in apparel design and a BS from
Eastern Michigan University in fashion merchandising.
Additionally, Susan is a European trained custom tailor. Skills
and course specialties include: couture tailoring, flat pattern
design, advanced construction and design techniques, textiles
and the cultural aspects of dress. Susan’s design and technical
expertise stems from her industry experience as a head tailor,
proprietor of Susan D. Designs and automotive seating trim
specialist for design concepts at Johnson Controls Inc. Her work
has been exhibited and presented on national and international
levels, with a garment receiving the Handweavers Guild of
America’s 2008 HGA Award. Additionally, Susan is the recipient of the ASDP 2016 Threads
Challenge "Inspired by Art" Award for Best Construction.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: All levels with basic machine and hand sewing
skills.

Student Supplies: Along with personal basic sewing supplies, include: Needles: between sizes
5-10, thimble, white basting thread, marking pencil/tracing paper, measuring tape/gauge/ruler,
fabric scissors, long pins with large heads, machine sewing thread.
Kit Fee: $35, includes pre-cut wool jacket sample, hair canvas, twill tape, hand sewing thread,
muslin backstay, shoulder pad and sleeve head, fusible interfacing, hem facing strips,
buttonhole thread, size seven sharp needles, tailor’s chalk and printed course pack.
Cinching It –Patrice Godin
Since the resurgence of corsetry over the last 10 years of so, many articles have been written,
videos produced and discussion groups formed. Despite all of this, so much incorrect and faulty
information continues to be spread. Here is a chance to have a very brief overview of this most
mysterious of garments and a chance to make a basic Victorian corset for yourself.
Brief Bio: Patrice comes from a long history of
professional theatrical costuming that spans more
than 28 years from coast to coast in Canada.
Calling Vancouver home since 1997, he has a
wealth of diverse experience in the sewing field
including retail sales, bridal boutique ownership,
corset making and millinery. In the last ten years,
he has focused on teaching, including for the
Vancouver Community College, Vancouver School
Board and private sewing professional
organizations.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Intermediate sewing
Student Supplies: Basic sewing kit, tape measure, pins, scissors, tracing paper and tracing
wheel, writing pads, marking tools etc.
Kit Fee $190.00 Kits come with fabric (coutil) enough to do a double layered corset, Laughing
moon Victorian corset pattern, grommet tape with bone placement space included, lacing, bias
binding, cord for upper edge, busk, German plastic boning, cord tipping plastic and twill tape for
use in stabilizing the waistline. Instructor will supplement this with 4 metal straight bones for
back per kit for the each student.

Large Jeweled and Beaded Appliqué – Mechiel Whitmore
Get ready to break some sewing rules! Experience step-by-step the process of creating a large
jeweled and beaded appliqué (this will fit on a sheet of paper for the sake of time). You’ll learn
about choosing fabric then you will transfer the design and stabilize the fabric. Choosing and
planning jewels and beads will follow, then practical application of the decorations. Mechiel will
also discuss how to translate this process to garments. All hands-on.
Brief Bio - Mechiel has been sewing since the age of
seven, sewing for both school and community theatres
since high school. A professional seamstress now for
over 30 years, she has maintained her own business for
more than 20 years. A member of ASDP since 2007,
Mechiel took part in the Vionnet Identique exhibit in
2009 and was thrilled to have her Zero Waste Sundress
pattern and article published in Sewstylish Magazine
Summer 2012 edition. Her story of the process involved
in making the amazing San Antonio, Texas Fiesta
coronation gowns was published in Vogue Patterns
Magazine Oct/Nov 2012. Mechiel has been working with
other dressmakers on and off since 1992 creating the coronation gowns. She now has the
privilege of making these gowns in her own workroom.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Basic sewing skills
Student Supplies: NOT good scissors, thimble (Don’t have one? Get one.), small box of large
head pins, (they will get ruined), black Sharpie, 2 plain hankies or smooth squares of fabric,
reading glasses for close work, 2 – gallon-size ziplock bags

rhinestone chain, crystal jewels, sequins and beads. I will also provide for class use; glue,
special waxed thread, wire cutters, duct tape, cardboard, box knife
Interactive CAD Patternmaking - GRAFIS - Sabine David
Patternmaking made easy, interactive, innovative and sophisticated! Learn how to draft high
quality, professional patterns on the computer. Create a bodice pattern with sleeves to your
body measurements. Learn how to set up individual measurement charts, work with basic

blocks, draft perfectly fitting sleeves and collars with only a few mouse clicks. Learn how to use
drafting and modification tools on the computer. The skills acquired during this masterclass can
be applied to other CAD software as well.
Brief Bio Sabine David is the owner and founder of Suncoast Custom, a company specialized in
computer aided patternmaking and design services. Sabine studied design at the University of
Applied Science in Hamburg, Germany and earned a BA in Clothing Technology. She is also a
trained dressmaker and instructor. Being in the apparel industry for over 25 years, she has
extensive industry experience in design, patternmaking, grading and production. Sabine David
has run a cad patternmaking service for a variety of clients for twenty years. She has shared her
knowledge since 1995 in the RUNDSCHAU (Magazine for Fashion and Pattern Techniques) in
countless expert articles about patternmaking. Sabine relocated her business in 2005 from
Germany to British Columbia, Canada where she provides services to clients in person and over
the internet. Sabine greatest passion is sharing her knowledge on how to achieve a perfect fit in
masterclasses, weekend workshops and evening classes at a variety of schools, universities, and
organizations in Europe, Canada and the US.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Basic
computer skills, comfortable using mouse and keyboard,
sewing and/or pattern drafting experience a plus but not
mandatory.

Innovative Pattern Making – Joyce Hittesdorf
Put aside all the “rules” of your craft and explore a whole new way to design garments! Spend 2
exciting days learning the techniques and concepts of Transformational Reconstruction. This
form of pattern making was developed by Japanese designer Shingo Sato. (This is NOT a new
way to do traditional flat pattern and cannot substitute for that basic skill.) (Please Google
Transformational Reconstruction) You will begin with practice of basic techniques needed to
advance to more difficult designs. Each new concept will be demonstrated. Time will be
allotted for the students to make samples. This class will make you look at patternmaking in a

completely different way. Using this method you will be able to design garments that are
beautiful to behold as well as interesting in their design elements.
Brief Bio: A dressmaker for almost 40 years, Joyce has
a wealth of knowledge she hopes to pass on to the
next generation. In October of 2013, she sold her
business, Something Wonderful!, and embarked on
several new adventures. One of the most challenging
was to study for 6 months under Shingo Sato. In
January of this year she became a Master of
Transformational Reconstruction. Shingo Sato gave her
his permission to teach his techniques. Joyce is excited
to lead you on a journey of mind boggling
manipulation of fabric and patterns.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course:
Skilled at sewing with some knowledge of traditional flat pattern design. Also lots of patience is
helpful.
Student Supplies: Basic sewing equipment, sewing machine and dress form if possible. List of
fabrics and other equipment will be sent to you later.

Two Day Master Classes
Lace Master Class – Susan Khalje
During the Lace Master Class, we'll begin with an overview of the 3 main types of lace used in
garment sewing: Chantilly, Guipure and Alencon. Then, to acquaint you with Chantilly lace,
we'll make a small lace and handkerchief linen pillowcase. The remainder of your time will be
spent on your choice of two projects: a Guipure lace skirt or an Alencon lace bustier.

There will be pre-class preparation for both the skirt and the bustier. See below the supplies
and preparation work listed for your choice of either the skirt or the bustier.
Brief Bio: Susan Khalje, a Contributing Editor of Threads Magazine, has been honored with the
Association of Sewing and Design Professionals' Lifetime Achievement Award. She received her
professional sewing training at the New York couture salon Chez Cez et Bez, and later worked
as a fashion designer and manufacturing supervisor on Seventh Avenue. An exceptional and
sought-after teacher, Susan established The Couture Sewing School in 1993, and she teaches
couture sewing techniques throughout the country. She teaches often in San Francisco, where
she is on the faculty of Apparel Arts. She is currently expanding her on-line class offerings, and
her professional contacts extend to Paris, where she yearly takes groups of students for an
insider's look at the couture arts.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Intermediate to Advanced skills, with strong
hand-sewing abilities
Student Supplies: Glass-headed pins, small very sharp scissors, contrasting basting thread,
matching thread, tape measure, rolling chalk marker, beeswax, shears, 18” clear ruler.

the small pillowcase, including French Chantilly lace, linen, and
silk organza.!
GUIPURE LACE SKIRT
Supplies needed: A darted straight skirt pattern, without a
waistband, underlining (medium weight muslin, pre-shrunk),
fashion fabric (it'll be visible through the lace; silk charmeuse is
suggested), adequate Guipure lace (the lower edge of the skirt
will run along one of the selvedges; you'll need your skirt's hip
measurement + 5"), a length of 1" wide petersham: your waist
measurement + 6”, a packet of small, clear snaps, a 7" regular zipper, lining (silk crepe de chine
is recommended), thread to match the charmeuse and the lace, a ham, Preparation: In advance
of the class, you'll need to prepare 3 skirt sections - a front, a left back and a right back. Each
section needs to consist of two layers: the muslin underlining and the silk charmeuse fashion
fabric. Paying strict attention to grain lines, the two fabrics need to be hand-basted together
(use contrasting basting thread), with clearly marked seamlines, waistline and hemline. Seam
allowances should be at least 1”, and the hem allowance should be at least 2".

ALENCON LACE BUSTIER
Supplies needed: A princess-seamed bustier pattern (there are generally 7 in a princess-seamed
bustier: center front, left and right side fronts, left and right side backs, left and right center
backs), fashion fabric (silk charmeuse, silk doupioni, silk taffeta are all possibilities), underlining
(pre-shrunk medium-weight muslin is a good choice), lining (silk crepe de chine is suggested), a
length of petersham (the waist measurement + 5"), two hooks and eyes, a long regular zipper
(at least 16”, )boning, thread to match the fashion fabric and the lace, a ham, lace adequate for
the project (this can vary enormously, depending on the effect you want. Fine Alencon lace
generally has two scalloped borders, so one border could be used at the top of the bustier and
the other along the lower edge. If, for example, this is the effect you want, you'll need to
determine those measurements and purchase accordingly, adding a little extra for matching. If
the borders are used along the top and bottom edges of the bustier, the rest of the bustier
would be covered with the rest of the lace - the yardage between the borders. Lace can also be
combined - for instance, the bustier could be overlaid with one Alencon lace, and trimmed
along one or both of its edges with a separate border. Further, lace can also be very effective in
smaller amounts - the entire bustier needn't be covered.) Preparation: In advance of the class,
you'll need to prepare the bustier's 7 sections. Before joining the fashion fabric and the
underlining, boning channels will need to be sewn to the underlining (if you're using muslin as
an underlining, be sure to pre-shrink it). Once that's been done, the two layers need to be
hand-basted with contrasting thread along their seamlines (be sure not to hand-baste the
boning channels closed). Vertical seam allowances should be at least 1" wide, with the upper
and lower edges at least 2". Allow wide seam allowances (at least 2") at the center back.
Creative Pattern Manipulation - Kathy Bolton
Kathy will stretch your imagination and take you on a creative journey on how to manipulate
your basic block into something unique. Some of her inspiration comes from garments
designed in the 1930’s to the designers of today such as Tomoko Nakamichi and Shingo Sato.
Through discussion and hands on activities participants will have an opportunity to learn some
techniques by taking part in various pattern manipulation
and draping exercises, participants will gain a better
understanding of advanced design and manipulation.
Brief Bio - Kathy Bolton resides in Vancouver and is a
Fashion Designer and Master Pattern Technician.
Graduating top of her class from a Vancouver based
private design school in 1987, she was Senior Pattern

Technician after 5 years at both Mid West Garments and Far West Industries. In 2004, Kathy
started Dimensions in Measure, her own design and CAD pattern services company. In 2008 she
moved to Vancouver and contracted with the White House Design Company. Her pattern and
design skills assisted the company in exponential growth and she was hired and promoted to
Head Designer for the Sympli label. Most recently she has been promoted to VP of Product
Development.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: An advanced understanding of clothing
construction
Student Supplies: French curve ruler, L-Square, clear grid ruler, mechanical pencil, measuring
tape, calculator, paper scissors, Scotch tape, pencil and different colored pens, basic sewing
supplies (fabric scissors, pins, needles, threads, etc.), half scale mannequins if you have – some
will be provided.
Kit Fee: $10 includes muslin and blocks for half scale. Instructor will supply white pattern paper
and jersey fabric free of charge

Every Bodies Shirt – Robin Bolton
Learn Islander Industrial Sewing Secrets while creating a woman’s blouse or man's shirt. In this
full day workshop with Islander instructor Robin Bolton you will discover faster, easier methods
for sewing the collar, band and front facings as well as setting the perfect sleeve, various
armscye finishes, cuff and hem applications. Once learned, these techniques can be transferred
to future projects causing your sewing to become much faster with more professional results.
Students must pre purchase the Shirt Maker Express (Men's #228 - Women's #227) at
Islandersewing.com. Be sure to register for the class and order your pattern in time to prewash your fabric and cut out the pattern. Those who do not have their shirts cut out with
interfacing adhered before arriving at class will have to audit the class. This class is
recommended for intermediate to advanced sewists as fitting the shirt pattern will not be

Brief Bio: Robin Bolton is a graduate of Northern Illinois University with a degree in Fashion
Merchandising. With over 30 years in the fashion sewing industry, Robin acquired her extensive

tailoring techniques. She is an award-winning designer
as well as a Certified Islander Sewing Systems
Instructor.

is considered an intermediate to advanced skilled
class. Students should know basic garment
construction. They will need to have the prepurchased pattern fitted, cut out and interfacing
applied as per pattern guide.

Designing for the Cottage Industry – Connie Crawford
Using completed professional blocks from Connie Crawford’s private collection, she will
demonstrate how to design and create patterns using these blocks. When custom designing
you can use the personal fitting cup sizes (A/B, C/D/DD, DDD/F/G, and H/I cup) to create both
woven and knit designs. Connie will demonstrate the different drapes needed to have a perfect
custom blouse. Learn to fit the gaposis of a neckline, make shoulders and armholes fit properly
and match the collar to your necklines. In addition, various blouse, dress, vest, and jacket
designs will be shown in order to create your own personal design. Custom skirts and pants will
also be shown as a reference from her private pattern collection.
Brief Bio: Connie Crawford is a licensed designer for Butterick Patterns, a member of the
Sewing Hall of Fame, nominated for a 2013 Golden Pen Award, and is owner of Fashion
Patterns by Coni (www.fashionfatterns.com) which specializes in patterns for mature figures in
sizes 8-20 and 1X to 6X. Connie has been a production patternmaker/designer in the Los
Angeles fashion industry for 35 years. She taught patternmaking and design classes for 23 years
at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. A nationally recognized lecturer, fashion

specialist and educator, she has authored several DVD’s and pattern textbooks sold worldwide
by Fairchild and Bloomsbury Publications. She will be the recipient of this year’s ASDP Lifetime
Achievement Award.
Pre Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Each student should be an accomplished
seamstress.
Student Supplies: Scissors for cutting paper, six inch ruler (no quilting rulers, please), scotch
tape, pencils, stapler and staples

various blocks and 1/3 scale patterns to make design
Introduction to Excel Spreadsheet– Dianne Frewer
This class will provide basic instruction on the various features of the Excel spreadsheet
software and guide you in preparing a budget for your business using these features
Brief Bio: Dianne Frewer, Owner of A Fitting Creation, LLC, has been sewing for over 40 years.
In 1976 she started her sewing business, concentrating her skills in wedding attire as well as
everyday wear. She maintained her sewing business while working for the local law
enforcement department and later a law office.
Dianne retired from her outside job at the beginning of 2014 and has devoted herself to sewing
full time.

Pre requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: No special skills are required for this class
except to know your computer. The Excel terminology and how to move around the software
will be taught.
Student Supplies: Please be sure your computer is in good working order and is loaded with
at least Windows 7 and Excel 14.

Saturday, October 22, 8:30 - 4:30 pm
Nuances of Fitting the Bust
Training the eye to see fitting issues is a process. We first learn to recognize big issues such as
too much or not enough room for the bust. Next, we learn to identify subtler issues such as
drag lines at the side of the bust. We can then take fitting to an even higher level and learn how
to make the body look beautifully proportionate by the way we fit the bust. Join Sarah in
investigating the nuances of fitting the bust. The class will be a combination of lecture, demo,
and hands-on fitting practice using muslins and class participants.
Brief Bio: Sarah Veblen is a custom fashion designer who specializes in fit, innovative pattern
design, and quality garment construction. Dedicated to promoting the craft of garment-making,
Sarah now concentrates on teaching sewing, design, and patternmaking at all levels. She has
had more than twenty Threads Magazine articles published, and her years of experience in

bring 1 or 2 hip-length bodice muslins (mock-ups) in your
size. You will fit others in the muslins they bring, and
someone else will fit you in your muslins. I recommend
one darted and one princess line style. If you have
questions about other styles, please feel free to bring
additional muslins. Please use light-colored woven fabric;

accurately established and marked horizontal balance lines (HBLs). Please contact me at

sites or take a photo of a child for grandma. Professional event, fashion and food photographer,
Chuck Islander will guide you through the basics to improving your photography.
Brief Bio: A commercial photographer and graphic designer for over 20 years, Chuck is a
photographer for Getty Images and graphic designer and marketing specialist for Sazerac. He
also works as a fashion photographer.

Textile Basics for Design Professionals Susan Widawski
Learn basic characteristics of natural and manufactured
fibers, yarns, fabric construction and finishes. Understand
the inter-relationship of these components to facilitate wise
decision- making in the selection, use and care of textiles.
Students will examine fabric swatches to identify type of

weaves, knits and yarn structures. Perform textile tests such as: yarn count, dye migration, burn
test and solubility test. Additional topics of discussion will be fiber identification labeling, care
labeling and safety standards.
Brief Bio: A professor at Wayne State University in the department of Fashion Design and
Merchandising, Susan holds an MA from Wayne State in apparel design and a BS from Eastern
Michigan University in fashion merchandising. Additionally, Susan is a European trained custom
tailor. Skills and course specialties include: couture tailoring, flat pattern design, advanced
construction and design techniques, textiles and the cultural aspects of dress. Susan’s design
and technical expertise stems from her industry experience as a head tailor, proprietor of Susan
D. Designs and automotive seating trim specialist for design concepts at Johnson Controls Inc.
Her work has been exhibited and presented on national and international levels, with a
garment receiving the Handweavers Guild of America’s 2008 HGA Award. Additionally, Susan is
the recipient of the ASDP 2016 Threads Challenge "Inspired by Art" Award for Best
Construction.

Vision and Leadership in Your Business – Erin Retelle
Building an idea of what you want your business to look like, setting SMART goals, and planning
how to achieve those goals is the first step. Then how do you communicate that vision to your
employees, your customers, and your family? Getting your other stakeholders on the same
page and motivating them to work toward your vision with you is what we'll explore in this
class. Not only will you have some newly acquired focus in your business (instead of just
working, working, working, to try and keep up), but you can use your vision and goals in your
business plan, elevator speech, interviews, and more.

fabric store, then by launching sewBoise in 2011. Now as sewBoise's owner and director, Erin

Fitting and Altering Men's RTW- Suit jackets, Sportcoats, and
Overcoats - Barbie McCormick
Proper fit, fitting methods, marking, and execution of various alterations that are typical for
men's RTW suit jackets, sportcoats, and overcoats. Alterations will include hemming vented
sleeves (quickly!), raising or lowering the collar, tapering through the shoulder blades, tapering
through a double vent, hemming the coat, and snugging the roll line. Various tools and
methods will be shown to make the alterations quick and easy.

Brief Bio: Barbie has been sewing professionally for more than 20 years. She does all sorts of
sewing, but she specializes in formal, bridal, and couture clothing for both men and women.
She loves all aspects of the process-from design, to patternwork, fitting, construction, and the
final details. She truly is a jack of all trades in sewing, and has also completed her MSDP
Certification.

Creative Bustles – Margaret Marie Fette
Today’s wedding gowns are as varied as are the people
who wear them, so taming the large and small trains of
these gowns requires a creative eye. The more of them
you see and the ways to bustle the trains the easier the
next ones are to do. Using a wide variety of “sample
gowns” we will see how to arrange the bustle and learn
practical steps to secure the bustles. If you have a current
"problem dress" you may bring photos to ask for help.
Brief Bio: Margaret Fette has owned the Tailored Fit, a
custom sewing and alteration shop in Bloomington, IN for
the past 10 years. The Tailored Fit’s focus has been
providing creative solutions for the hard to fit.
Additionally the shop sees many designer bridal gowns
for alterations. She worked on Broadway for a year at
Carelli Costumes, working many shows including Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll & Hyde, and
Rent. She has taught at a variety of craft schools including John C Campbell Folk School and as a
visiting lecturer at Indiana University in their fashion design program.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Basic hand and machine sewing skills.
Additionally some experience with formal wear and/ or bridal alterations would be helpful but
not absolutely necessary.

Fair Rate – Janee Connor
The root issue for all entrepreneurs: how to earn a living working for yourself. You’ve taken the
plunge, left the security of earning a paycheck by working for someone else - it’s up to you
alone now to find a way to build a business and be fairly compensated. Whether you’re new to
a sewing and design business or have been struggling with the pricing issue for years, we’ll
explore the elements of the pricing formula, outline the
expenses that an hourly rate must cover, lay the
groundwork that will allow your business to grow. From
there I’ll present options and tools for creating a price list
for alterations and estimating custom projects.
Brief Bio: Janee has owned and operated her custom
sewing and alterations business, Janee’s Originals, outside
of Boston for 25 years, following a career in retail
management. Her approach to pricing has its roots in the
retail math learned in the executive training programs at
Sears and Jordan Marsh, and has been refined by seminars
and programs offered for sewing businesses over the
years. A charter member of ASDP, Janee has served on the New England Chapter board and the
national board. In late 2016, her part-time position as fabric/customer service specialist and
database manager for a mail-order fabric company ended when the business was sold, creating
the opportunity for Janee to devote more time in the studio to grow her business, adding
teaching sewing to her schedule.

making bridal and formalwear, but her core business currently is teaching and writing, having
established her Alterations for Professionals series in 2004. Her classes have drawn students

Brief Bio: Cisa is the owner of Sew Fitting in New Albany, Indiana, which is the area’s premiere

Two- Day Master Classes
Made to Measure Jacket Pattern – Sabine David
Compare balance measurements and draft the basic jacket block with personal measurements
and calculated proportional measurements. Define the right bust, back, shoulder and sleeve
type for your body. A muslin toile is made. During fittings there will be a discussion of fit,
problems for certain figure proportions and how to adjust the basic pattern accordingly. Muslin
toiles may be cut and refitted directly on the body. The students will adjust their basic pattern
and sew another toile for the second fitting.
Brief Bio: Sabine David is the owner and founder
of Suncoast Custom, a company specialized in
computer aided patternmaking and design
services. Sabine studied design at the University of
Applied Science in Hamburg, Germany and earned
a BA in Clothing Technology. She is also a trained
dressmaker and instructor. Being in the apparel
industry for over 25 years, she has extensive
industry experience in design, patternmaking,
grading and production. Sabine David has run a
cad patternmaking service for a variety of clients
for twenty years. She has shared her knowledge
since 1995 in the RUNDSCHAU (Magazine for
Fashion and Pattern Techniques) in countless expert articles about patternmaking. Sabine
relocated her business in 2005 from Germany to British Columbia, Canada where she provides
services to clients in person and over the internet. Sabine greatest passion is sharing her
knowledge on how to achieve a perfect fit in masterclasses, weekend workshops and evening
classes at a variety of schools, universities, and organizations in Europe, Canada and the US.

Make Your Own Bra – Mary Claflin
This class focuses on construction techniques needed to produce a comfortable custom made
bra. We will focus on a full band bra and if time permits we will look at changing the cup line
and converting a full band to partial band. Discussion of fabrics, commercial patterns and a
variety of construction techniques will be
available. Students will provide their
measurements by September 15, for a custom
pattern. Please wear your best fitting bra to
class.
Brief Bio: Mary learned to sew at a young age
working with her mother and both
grandmothers. After school she expanded her
skills, working as a wedding consultant, dress
designer and professional kilt maker. In 1987 she
took a position as stitcher for the Oregon
Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. Mary went on to expand her theatrical resume to
include design and construction work for several major West Coast theaters. She has a
background in education from Southern Oregon University and University of Oregon with
experience in both adult and public school education. With her husband, Patrick, she owns and
operates Claflin Academy of Sewing and Design and Comfortable Elegance Custom Bras and
Lingerie.
Pre-Requisite Skills Needed to Take the Course: Students needs strong accurate sewing skills,
¼” seams are used in making a bra.
Student Supplies: Paper scissors, SHARP fabric scissors or rotary cutter and small mat, small
trimming scissors, pinking shears, stretch and jersey point sewing machine needles, regular
polyester thread in white, off white and black, basic sewing tool kit that includes seam ripper,

straight pins (best are 1 3/8 inch glass head), tape measure, seam gauge, etc., notebook to take
notes, a small calculator that can do percentages.
Kit Fee: $100 includes Powernet, simplex, elastics, channeling, hooks and eyes, rings and slides,
custom pattern and handouts. (Supplies for 3 bras) Every one signed up for this class really
needs their own machines, it will be very difficult to share machines or build a bra without a
machine.
3D Draping Techniques – Margaret Blackburn
The practical study of three dimensional draping techniques provides the ability to drape fabric
on the dress form to create garments. Students acquire a sense of proportion and balance. The
principals of draping may be used to develop various types of
fit to reflect fashion silhouettes and enhance garment
style. Resulting 3D drapes can be converted to 2D for Master
patterns.
Brief Bio: Margaret Blackburn, retired as a draping
instructor at University of Fraser Valley, now conducts
workshops for guilds and trade groups. She is also a Master
Milliner, with her design label HEADLINES. A member of
Abbotsford Arts Council, she has exhibited at The Reach
Gallery, as well as being a guest designer for Vancouver
Fashion Week.

Connie Crawford is a licensed designer for the McCall Pattern Company under the
Butterick label, a member of the Sewing Hall of Fame, and was named VIP
Woman of the Year 2014-2015 by the National Association of Professional
Women. She is President and CEO of Fashion Patterns by Coni. A nationally and
internationally recognized lecturer, fashion specialist, and educator, she has
authored numerous sewing DVD’s, sewing and pattern textbooks, including. A
Guide to Fashion Sewing, The Art of Fashion Draping, and Patternmaking Made
Easy. She is a former instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design &
Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. Her professional experience also includes
positions as a designer, design consultant, patternmaker, and grader in the Los
Angeles garment industry, as well as designing a gown for the Academy Awards
for the wife of screenwriter Jeff Macquire, nominated for the movie “In the Line
of Fire. A well-recognized speaker for various colleges and fashion groups, Connie
has been featured in magazines such as Threads, Sew News, and Notions as well
as Stitches magazine in Australia, and has appeared on Sewing with Susan Khalje,
Creative Living with Cheryl Borden, and the ABC TV series Home. For many years,
Connie was the Keynote Speaker for the International Textile Show in Las Vegas,
presenting the twice-yearly Color, Fabric and Fashion Forecast.
Connie is a member of The National Association of Professional Women, the
American Sewing Guild, International Textile and Apparel Association, Australian
Sewing Guild, Association of Design and Apparel Professionals, Independent
Pattern Company Alliance, Sewing Dealers Trade Association, Round Bobbin
Association, and Sewing/Quilting Educators.
Connie earned her degree in Fashion Design from Los Angeles Trade Technical
College and received her teaching credentials from the University of California Los

Vancouver Fun and Fabric Tours
The annual tour will be held both Thursday, October 20, 2016,
and again Monday, October 24, if there are enough registrants.
We’ll leave the Westin Wall Centre at 8:30 a.m. by charter bus for
a full day of fun and fabric! (At the time of writing, US to Canadian
dollar conversion is very favorable, so come prepared to SHOP!)
We’ll be visiting Rocco Sarees for some amazing Indian fabrics, then off to Jefferson Wholesale,
where you will have an entire warehouse full of sewing supplies to shop from, at wholesale
prices! Bring your list and leave room in your suitcase for this place! Then it’s on to the quaint
(and famous) Granville Island Market for lunch on your own in the international food court, and
treasures galore in the island’s multitude of shops, including silks, woolens, beads, dyes, and
other finds! A short bus ride away we’ll see Beazu bead wholesaler (with a HUGE collection of
Swarovski’s!), and Lonsdale Leathers, where custom shoes are made, and BEAUTIFUL skins and
hides are sold. We’ll have you back to the Westin by 5pm.
The Monday tour will have the same stops, possibly with some variation in order of the stops.
Come ready for a fun-filled time, as our driver will narrate sights along the way!
Welcome Reception
 This will be held Thursday evening, October 20, 2016 from 7-9 pm. It is a time to
network, for friends to get reacquainted, and members, both novice and veteran, to
forge new relationships.
 The board members will be available to answer questions regarding individual board
positions and how Association leadership works in general.
 Introduction of ASDP Foundation, whose mission is to support students pursuing
education in sewing and design, educators teaching the next generation of sewing and
design professionals, and to the extent permitted by IRS interpretations of charitable
purpose, small manufacturers and other sewing and design entrepreneurs.

Arriving By Air:
YVR Vancouver International Airport is just a
Area Transportation:
short free shuttle to the hotel. The shuttle stops
just outside the international arrival main doors.
Cross the crosswalk and you will see on your
right an area where you will be picked up. The
hotel shuttle has their name on the side of the
vehicle. Shuttle runs every 20-30 minutes.
Transportation from Bellingham or Seattle airports:
There is a regular bus shuttle service to and from Seattle and Vancouver;
some of the shuttles will drop you off at the River Rock Casino which is a
very short taxi ride to the hotel.
Driving from Seattle: Approximately 2 hours and 34 minutes with no
traffic - north on I-5. Suggestion: if you get in the HOV lane just before
Seattle you will make a good time.
Train from Portland or Seattle to Vancouver: check out Amtrak for
information. You can get the sky train to the Vancouver Airport across the
street from the train station then get the free shuttle to the hotel.
While in Vancouver:
If you want to explore, download an app for TransLink as the station is a
short walk from the hotel. If you choose to use a taxi, it will cost
approximately $30.00 CDN, but please check with the driver.

Weather
Vancouver landscape is lush forest and beautiful green spaces, so we need
the rain to keep it that way. Therefore, there is a 43% chance that it will
rain while you are here. So please pack your umbrella. Temperatures In
October can range from a high of 57 degrees to a low of 41 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Conference Attire
Attire for all daytime sessions is business casual. Evening events give
members the opportunity to dress up a bit more, especially for the
Saturday night banquet. (Silver colored eveningwear is especially
appropriate this year, given our 25th anniversary!) And of course, we
always love to see fashions of your own creation!
Canadian Currency
We highly recommend that you purchase from your bank, at a bank machine or at
the airport some Canadian currency for coffee etc. Most business in Vancouver
will accept your dollar but will not give you the same rate of exchange as a bank,
and you will also receive Canadian currency as your change. If you purchase
merchandise using your bank card or credit card you will receive the rate that
your card gives to you, and you will see that reflected in your monthly statement.
