Wagner felt Dresden to be home, and the city did much to shape his intellectual and artistic development: after spending his childhood and early years there, from 1843 to 1849 he was the Royal Saxon Kapellmeister of the Dresden Hofkapelle (court orchestra) - as the Staatskapelle was then known. In memory of the great composer, and mindful of its own Wagner tradition, the Staatskapelle staged a glittering gala concert in the Semperoper on the eve of Richard Wagner’s bicentenary. It was directed by its Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann, indisputably one of the great Wagner conductors of the present day. He was joined by the hottest young heroic tenor of recent years, Jonas Kaufmann. The programme featured the overtures to the Wagner operas written and premiered in Dresden - 1842 Rienzi, 1843 The Flying Dutchman and 1845 Tannhäuser - and great tenor scenes from Rienzi, Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Wagner’s works were counterpointed by Hans-Werner Henze’s Fraternité, Air pour l’orchestre.
