Burris IT Supports The Fresh Market Startup in New Castle
In August 2012, our New Castle location welcomed a new customer - The Fresh Market! Over the years,
the Burris Team has successfully launched several new start-up
warehouses. New Castle is no exception! This time, our Team
faced a unique challenge: adding a new dry dock warehouse
while transitioning the current freezer to suit the needs of TFM.
With a short timeline and a big goal, the Burris IT team went to
work to make the success of Burris New Castle a reality.
So, how did Burris IT accomplish this goal while still handling their regular responsibilities to our other locations? Good old-fashioned hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
In the weeks leading up to the start of shipping, the Burris IT Team created a support
center in New Castle with all the necessary resources and equipment to offer aroundthe-clock support. At any given time, there were at least 5, or as many as 14, IT people
on-site in New Castle. Jennifer Gallagher, who helped in the dry dock warehouse, said,
“It was a wonderful experience to see the Burris Team come together for another successful startup.” The dedicated IT Team set up equipment, trained Team Members, and
improved the operational systems to ensure Burris New Castle had all the necessary
tools to offer WOW service to TFM right from the start.
Each member of the Support Team took turns working a week or more in New Castle.
Ed Krupka, the President of Burris IT, commended their efforts by saying, “If there were lights on and an NC Team Member was
there, so was someone from our IT Team. I feel extremely blessed to have the team we have. I am very proud of them.”
In addition to Support, IT Team Members from the Software, Infrastructure, Development, and Business Analyst teams worked
each day of the week throughout July and August. Kent Garthwaite, a Burris IT Business Analyst, was one of the Team Members
in New Castle this summer. He explained the mission of the IT Team when he said, “The Team Members in the warehouses and
offices of all Burris locations are our customers. It is our job to give them the resources they need to be successful in supporting
the customer.”
With the help of Burris IT, the great team of both veteran and new Burris Team Members is ready to ‘Make it Happen’ for The
Fresh Market!

W
e have been preparing for
months. Every detail was
planned in advance. Our buildings
were updated, racked and cleaned.
Our team members trained in Atlanta
and Elkton. Our drivers completed
training delivery routes for our sister
facilities in Atlanta, Elkton, and
Harrington. Product started arriving on
our docks. Every team member was
ready. Our CDL-A drivers were ready
to deliver. We even did a practice run
on August 11, 2012!
On March 26, 2012, New Castle
PRW had 16 team members. By
August 12, 2012, the New Castle
Distribution Center had over 110 Team
Members and “lots” of resource experts
in the facility to ensure we were ready
to service The Fresh Market.
With only a few delays, The Fresh
Market started receiving product
shipped directly from Burris New
Castle.

In August, I got a chance to spend
quite a bit of time in our New Castle
operation as they began the distribution
to The Fresh Market…what a great
week! I could not have been more
pleased with the Teamwork and the
Make It Happen attitude that was
displayed. Not only did I get to see
several departments pulling together to
get a new startup off the ground, but I
got to see a supervisory team that was
all promoted from within Burris!...Team
Members like Brian Kiliany “BK”, Corey
Smith, Mike Downes, Chris Robbins,
Herman Littleton. Jim Bertuola, you
assembled a great team – many who I
have failed to mention above, but were
critical to the
success of this
operation.
The Custom group has started their
“Burris Process Excellence” initiative
(led by Chris Turk), designed to create
consistent best practices throughout all
Custom facilities.
I am very
pleased with
the progress
that is
being made
throughout
the company.
A few
examples… We continue to make
great progress with HPWP (led by
Laura McCann). Well over 200 of our
leaders have attended this weeklong

Not only has the PRW+ group exceeded
an overall facility occupancy of over 90%,
but they have done it without having a
single lost-time accident in over a year!
Honor Foods continues to increase sales
and has made several strong additions
to their leadership team to position this
division to grow.
The Freight Management group just last
month brokered over 250 loads in one
week…a new record!
I also wanted to mention
how absolutely incredible
Orlando’s engine room
looked on my last visit to
that facility…great job

WHAT’S NEW IN 2012

ver the next several months,
you will see some significant
changes to our Human Resource
Information Systems. We have
partnered with Cornerstone On
Demand to provide our team
members with a way to manage
your career with Burris Logistics.
Cornerstone On Demand has a
recruiting component to allow
applicants to apply online,
a performance management
component to allow all team
members to have access to their
goals and performance appraisals
from any computer, a learning
management component to have
a catalog of courses that team
members may take to further
their career with Burris, and a
succession planning component to
help us track our team members
to grow our own leaders. This
is an exciting project and we
will be providing you with more
information as we begin the
implementation process.

2012 was a hectic week for 24
of our Burris team members. They
attended HPWP Leadership class
in Annapolis, MD. It was an
exciting week and everyone left
with a commitment to continue
to Fan the Fire. Our next HPWP
project is to have Sue Bingham
and Gloria St. Martin-Lowry
conduct a train-the-trainer for
High Performance Coaching
and Counseling. These classes
were held in Milford the week of
September 5th.

SUNSHINE STATE SAFETY
RECOGNITION AWARD

warehouse recently received a Sunshine
State Safety Recognition Award from
USF SafetyFlorida. This is the facility’s first
award.
The 118,000-square-foot, temperaturecontrolled warehouse is part of a network
of 13 facilities located throughout the
East that service the food industry. The
family-owned and operated company
is based in Delaware and has been in
business for 87 years.
Safety and health is a top priority for
Burris’ Lakeland warehouse. For the last
three years, it has not incurred a single
recordable injury. Its commitment to
safety is shared not only by management
but by its employees as well. A safety
committee meets monthly and performs
regular safety inspections. Furthermore,
the committee ensures employees are

of Agriculture and Natural Resources
extended a special thanks to Burris
Logistics in Harrington for making it

storage at its facility.

On Saturday September 22nd Burris sponsored a team for the Delaware MS Bike to the Bay. Wayne Romanczuk (CFO), Ed
Krupka (CIO), Lauren Thomas (IT), and Kim Marks (friend of Laurens) did the 75-mile bike ride from Del Tech to Dewey Beach. Donnie
Burris (CEO), Drew Bowman (IT), and Rob McCarthy (IT) completed the 49-mile ride from Lake Forest High School to Dewey Beach.
Shawna Alexander (Finance) drove the support vehicle and took pictures. Collectively they raised over $1750 for the fight against MS.

Yesterday was Burris Orlando’s 11-year
anniversary! Tiffany from Burris Orlando

Wayne Mucha, Rocky Hill, Driver of the Year
I (Tiffany Gates) just wanted to take a few
minutes to brag about Derrick. While he
was visiting Orlando, we were sending
a group of our team members to Daily
Bread to serve lunch to the homeless. This
is a program that we offer our team on a
monthly basis, but were short on members
that particular day. Derrick volunteered to
go and did an amazing job! Thanks for
your help!
ROCKY HILL, Conn. (WTNH)
-- More than two dozen trucks will bring
tons of donated food to a warehouse today,
and eventually help feed the hungry. It’s
called the Convoy of Caring. The trucks will
be filled with $21 million worth of donated food. Charlie Agganis, Rob Hayes,
and our driver Wayne Albert attended. The YouTube video has our truck right

center startup and the energy at Burris
has been phenomenal.”
According to Fernando Tatem, CDL-A
driver,
“This is
also my second start-up operation.
Like any startup, bumps and bruises
occur, but as we gel, the operation
becomes tighter and more efficient.
I’m glad to be a part of our success
here.”
Kelly Blackburn, Office Manager,
has seen our facility go through a metamorphosis over the past
few months. Kelly says, “We all came together to become one
big team, which made our grand opening a huge success.”

FAREWELL TO LARRY & RICHARD
We had a BBQ at the Harrington facility to say
good-bye and good luck to two members that have
been a permanent structure at this facility for many
years, Larry Passwaters with 36 years of service and
Richard Clark with 38 years of service. After all
these years it was truly a difficult good-bye for all of
us here in Harrington. Larry and Richard will always
be remembered by everyone that had the pleasure of
working with or for them. We have all been touched
by both of these incredible men. We wish both of
you the best of luck and you will truly be missed!

Lyndhurst Shatters Record
On January 24th, 2012, the Lyndhurst facility shattered its own lost time injury record of eight hundred
and one days!
On January 24th, 2012, the Lyndhurst facility shattered its
own lost time injury record of eight hundred and one days!
This was a tremendous feat, and would not have been
possible without the diligence and dedication of each
team member. As with all operational and maintenance
tasks, safety must include individual and team efforts in
order to be successful. We must be accountable for our
actions and their results, and we must expect the same
from our team mates. Moving the dial forward one day
at a time is much more than keeping the numerical streak
alive . . . it is about keeping our people injury-free and
alive. When we come in that front gate each and every
work day, we expect to go back out that gate at the end
of our shift in the same condition in which we arrived.
Every team member at Lyndhurst does his or her part to
ensure that this happens.
Is it ready yet?
To commemorate this milestone feat, the management team held a barbeque cookout
for each shift, and each team member was given a fleece Burris jacket. A large banner
acknowledging the feat was hung in the warehouse, and a smaller version was placed
in the visitor waiting area (see banner above). Every Lyndhurst team member should
be proud of this accomplishment and what it symbolizes, and as a TEAM we need to
keep moving that dial forward one work day at a time. “Congratulations to All”

Honor Foods has put in place a peer
to peer recognition program. Peers

Company
Picnic
The Honor Foods social committee,
held its first company picnic on August
3, 2012. There was plenty of food
and fun. All team members enjoyed
a hot fun Friday. We had team
member’s throughout the company
pulling together to help this event
become successful.
All food left over was donated to the
homeless shelter and the women’s
shelter.

Chris Neris was nominated by Steve Hart,

stated that this team member continues to
help out in the warehouse wherever help
is needed, without being asked to do it.
He always completes his scheduled duties
and then helps out in other areas during
the course of his shift. He always keeps up
with his job duties but always does more
than asked. Thank you Chris for your hard
work!

Joe Adams nominated Sue Murphy for
her teamwork and collaboration. Sue
is always willing to do anything to help
out the sales team. Just one of the recent
events: Sue volunteered on several occasions to come in early to help out when
others are on vacation or are out due to
illness. She comes in at 6:30am to help
out and answer the phones and take
orders. Sue you are truly an asset to the
team!

pleasure to have David as a Co-worker.

Meet the Social Media Coordinator and
Editor - Sarah Lauzen
Though, I am originally from Milford,
Delaware, I currently live in California
with my husband. Ted is a USMC
helicopter pilot and we are currently
stationed at Camp Pendleton awaiting
his first deployment quickly approaching
this fall. I have been very fortunate to
be able to work mostly from my home in
Carlsbad, California. When I am not in
my home office, I am traveling back East
to the Burris Corporate Office or visiting
one of our 14 locations somewhere
between Connecticut to Florida!
I have been to all Burris Locations within
the last 2 years (most more than once)
giving me the opportunity to meet many
of our team members.

Ron Collins
Tobias Schrock
33 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE
Congratulations and farewells were in order for
Tobias Schrock. Mr. Schrock retired from Burris
Logistics in Harrington, DE after 33 years of
service. He started here in August of 1979. He
was a driver for our Mars stores in Baltimore, MD,
Acme, and Pace all over the East Coast. He has
seen business come and go and adapted well
to the change. Mr. Schrock was always a team
player and would go that extra mile to “Make It
Happen”. He will be greatly missed. Good Luck
on your retirement Toby.
CONGRATULATIONS and well
wishes to Ron Collins who, on
January 13, 2012, spent his last
day with us as an employee of
Burris Logistics. Ron is retiring after
spending 36 years with us. Almost
all of that time was spent in the
Harrington facility with the exception
of a short stint in Milford.
JAMES FOX’S PROMOTION
BURRIS - MILFORD
Ron started in August of 1975. His
starting wage was just over $3.00
per hour, very respectable at the
time. We were working a “swing”
shift, Sunday through Thursday
and we averaged 12 hours per
day. Tough duty, but Ron and his
colleagues were up to the challenge.
And they had to be, we had just
started operating a new distribution
center and our customers demanded
(and deserved) our best efforts. It
was apparent even then that we
were building something special. Ron
started work on the picking crew and
stayed there for a few years. He then
switched to the receiving crew and
found a home spending the bulk of
his career on the receiving dock.
James will continue to report to the Corporate Controller, Jason James.
James’ primary responsibilities will include collecting information from
and assisting the Corporate Controller with reporting financial results
internally and externally.
Ron and his wife Ann are building
a new home and will be moving in
sometime this Summer. Ron plans on
enjoying his retirement by “riding
my motorcycle and fishing when it’s
warm enough” and “doing some
volunteer work through my motorcycle
club. Anything else is just gravy.”
Well done Ron and thank you for
your devotion over the years. We
wish you, Ann, and your entire family
nothing but the best.
James Fox has been promoted to Financial Reporting Manager (from
Senior Accountant). James has earned this promotion through hard work
and dedication to Burris.
James came to work for Burris December 27, 2006; he was previously
employed by MBNA.

HORACE DUDLEY
Horace Dudley, Harrington Receiver, is
retiring on August
3, 2012. Horace
has been with
Burris Logistics
since October 17,
1967. WOW!!!!
Talk about “ I am
Burris.” Horace
has been with the
company for so
long he is like our own Historian. He
has seen Burris prosper from Milford to
Harrington and Federalsburg....and on
and on and on. It has been a great
pleasure to have such a dedicated and
valuable team member as Horace.
Horace is a very quiet and shy man
when you first meet him,
but when you get to
know him you are never
surprised by anything
that Horace comes
up with :) He’s got a
great sense of humor
and compassion for his
fellow team members.
Horace is definitely one
of a kind. We sure will miss you Horace
and we wish you and your family the
best of luck in whatever “retirement”
holds for you.

Donna Chaney
The Milford Finance Department
lost one of their long-time team
members when Donna Chaney
passed away on August 2,
2012. Donna had been with
the company for over 38 years.
She was only 19 when she
started what would turn out to be
her lifetime career.
She worked most of those years
in the accounts payable area.
As her co-workers remember
Donna, the same comments
keep coming up. She had a
wealth of knowledge and the
most amazing memory. She was
also known for her quiet sense of
humor. She grew with Burris from
the era of handwritten ledgers
and carbon paper through where
we are today.
Donna was a lifelong resident
of the Milford area. She is
survived by her husband and two
sons. She is missed by those that
worked alongside her.

submitted names and they chose
my suggestion: the Burris Gazette.
I came up with the name Gazette
because when I was 11 I delivered an
afternoon paper called the Phoenix
Gazette when I lived in Phoenix.
