MARKET CITY NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1 2010 Get fresh with us marketnews 2&3 4 Records Smashed at Cherry Auction 2009 Cherry Auction Photos 2010 Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year Fresh produce industry digs deep Tony Galati of Wanneroo Farmers’ Market created a new record when he paid $31,500 for one kilogram of cherries at the Market City Charity Cherry Auction in December. Other successful bidders were Richard Bloomfield, Key Produce ($4,200); John Ale, Tony Ale & Co ($6,600); Than Quoc Tran, TR & TR Growers Direct ($5,700); Sam Napoli, Balcatta Growers Fresh ($5,600); Basil Gotsis, Fresh Provisions ($5,600); Arthur Saltis, Combined Growers Fruit and Veg Market ($5,100); Shane Patching, SJ Fresh ($5, 400); Rodney Dullard, Chantec ($5,000) and Hong Bot Nguyen, Fresh Stop Market ($3,100). Traditionally held at 7am on the first Friday in December at Market City, Canning Vale, the Auction raises funds by celebrating the start of the WA-grown cherry season, with bidders staking their claim on the 1kg boxes of the freshest local cherries. The Auction raised a phenomenal $78,830 for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, the largest sum in the history of the Cherry Auction. Members of the fresh produce industry are renowned for their generosity, and this Auction produced some serious rivalry from the moment bidding started. Tony Galati emerged victorious, despite competition from previous Cherry Kings. Mr Galati then graciously abdicated and his son and daughter, Frank and Alana Galati, were then crowned honorary Cherry King and Cherry Queen. ‘It’s a wonderful cause to be helping and I also bid up big to celebrate the opening of my new Wanneroo Market outlet,’ said Mr Galati. Mr Galati, who is well known for his handson approach to fresh produce growing and retailing, has recently ventured into the northern suburbs, with Wanneroo Farmers’ Market in Prindiville Drive. Like his other fresh produce retail outlets, Baldivis and Mandurah Spud Sheds, the Wanneroo Farmers’ Market is open seven days a week. children at PMH. I would like to pass on a huge thank you to the generous bidders and the Cherry Growers’ Association of WA and Market City for their continued support.’ The ten boxes of cherries auctioned were kindly donated by the Cherry Growers’ Association of WA and were auctioned by Jim Reagan, ably assisted by Richard Bloomfield. Toyota Material Handling looked after any hunger pangs with a sizzling breakfast spread, with all proceeds going to PMH Foundation. The annual Charity Cherry Auction is made possible with the continued support of the Chamber of Fruit & Vegetable Industries in WA, the Perth Market Authority, Toyota Material Handling and the Cherry Growers’ Association of WA. Over $470,000 in total has now been raised for the kids at the Princess Margaret Hospital since the Auction’s inception in 1992, helping to purchase an array of essential equipment and services. ‘We are absolutely thrilled at the record amount raised at the Cherry Auction for Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation this year.’ said Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation CEO, Don McLean. ‘Over $78,000 is an incredible achievement and will be used to purchase vital equipment for the sick and injured n Frank and Alana Galati www.perthmarket.com.au City marketnews MARKET CITY NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1 2010 2009 Market City Charity Cherry Auction Perth Market Authority From the Chamber 2010 is off to a good start at Market City, especially with the stone fruit season.
