Potentate’s Message
Nobles and Ladies,
Join me in celebrating our nations Two Hundred and Fortieth birthday. We will start the celebration with one of
our best parades, the Fourth of July parade in Coronado.
This is a great opportunity to “Show the Fez” and get our
message out to the community. The weather is always
great and the spectators are always 5 deep on the sidelines.
On July 15th we will have the Officers of the San Diego Scottish Rite as our guests for the
Stated Meeting dinner. The dress for the event will be “Hawaiian” and the dinner will be a
Luau style meal complete with a whole roasted pig or two prepared by our great Islander
Shrine Club chefs. Please come out and join us for a fun evening, reservations must be
made through the Shrine office @ 858 292 0092, by Wednesday July 13th.
On May 21st we initiated 10 new Nobles. Thanks to our Ritualistic Cast, our Oriental Band,
and of course our Director’s Staff. I have already seen a couple of our new Nobles at the Valley Center Parade and the Legion of Honor Memorial Day Service. They and their Ladies will
be our guests at the Stated Meeting Dinner. Please give them a warm welcome. This is the
perfect opportunity to recruit new members for your unit. Speaking of units, we need a few
good men to join two of our units whose ranks have been depleted over time. They are the
Greeters and the Patrol, the tasking for both of these units is pretty simple. Our Greeters are
those smiling Nobles that extend a hand of welcome to you when you come for our quarterly
stated meetings. That’s it, a simple, but very important function. The Patrol no longer march
in our parades, but they too perform a very important function, they form the Honor Guard
for our Officers and visiting Dignitaries at the start of our meetings, again that is only 4 times
a year. The Patrol does have a fancy uniform and we have an abundance of the ornate red
jackets for your use. In recent years our Legion of Honor Nobles have stepped in to help with
our Honor Guard, but it would be great to have our Patrol back.
A special thanks to Dave”Rojo” McChesney for his efforts in making our Shrine Calliope
street worthy again. The public easily identify the Clowns as the trademark of the Shrine
and with our Calliope once once again running in the parades it adds that special flavor to
our image, Thanks Dave!
We have two Ceremonials scheduled at present the first is on August 20th at the Masonic
Center in Tijuana and will be performed in Spanish by our Mexican degree team, and the
other will be on October 22nd at the Scottish Rite Center done by our Ritualistic Cast. If there
is a particular Masonic Lodge or group of Lodges that have a group of Brothers that would
like to join our ranks as a group I will be happy to entertain that possibility. I have already
made that offer to my own Lodge. We all need to work to fill our ranks again. Thanks for your
support this year, it’s greatly appreciated.
Fraternally,

Dear Ladies,
I am without words! I know that’s really unexpected! Thank you just doesn’t seem to
convey or explain how grateful I am to all. The many hours of planning and hard
work by Chairlady Jayne Parker, our Divan Ladies and all others is so appreciated.
You helped make this luncheon an exquisite memory I will cherish forever. You are
marvelous - Team 16! And then, all the Ladies that attended, I know you enjoyed
yourselves from the chatter and laughter...THANK YOU! Ladies, you are the jewels
of Al Bahr and I am honored and priviledged to be part of this amazing Shrine.
Respectfully,
Barbara Hahn
The Potentate’s Brunch scheduled for Sunday July 31st is being postponed. A new date will be
selected and a proper date will be given.

Chaplain’s Message
How do we as Americans consider religion as it relates to patriotism? What is it, then, that binds us? There are many theories as
to the answers. For which, I haven’t got the room in this article to
adequately describe them all. So, I pose this quandary to you. How
would you, answer this?
As for me, I’m a 20 year veteran of the United States Navy. I would
consider myself very patriotic and religious as I can be in today’s
society. I have felt many degrees of patriotism in my life, but none
as strong as when I was in the first gulf war and the ship that I was
on, ran over a 400 lbs. tethered mine, 20 miles of the coast of
Failaka island near the coast of Kuwait. In this instance, I believe
that they were expressed simultaneously. I didn’t think, I just did. I
believe that is why, I’m here today. Because I had faith not only in
God and myself, but also a strong patriotic belief of country.
Yours in Faith,
Abraham Ravitch
Chaplain

Grand Council was held in Costa Mesa May 15-20. At this weeklong session our new Grand High Priestess was elected, she is
Lady Diana Schmitz from Denderah Court # 10 in Toledo, Ohio.
Shaaru Court’s Lady, Linda Figler was elected Grand Marshal. As
well as electing officers for the ensuing year, changes to our Rules
& Regulations and Ritual and other legislation were discussed.
Ten Ladies from Shaaru Court attended. Our Dancers’ Unit, the
Dancing Diamond Divas performed and several Court members
did a walk on for the Drills.
The special project of our outgoing High Priestess Lady Joy Moore
from El Riva Court #102 in Riverside was fully funded due to the
generous donations she received as she traveled to all the Courts
and Shriners’ Hospitals during her year. This project is the Ladies’
Oriental Shrine of North America Rehabilitation Terrace, which will
be part of the new Shriners’ Hospital in Pasadena.
Don’t forget our Ladies’ Therapy Session on Tuesday July 26, at
1130, at Al Bahr Shrine Center, you don’t have to be a member to
join us, just come ready to play Bunco, have some fun and enjoy
fellowship with a group of very nice ladies. A donation of $10 goes

Shrine Motorcylcle Riding Club
Greeters
As I write this month article, Sandra and I are on the road returning
from our Trip to the South East. There were many Highlight’s on
this trip but the one I would like to share with the club is the “Tail of
the Dragon”….. A section of highway 129 in Tennessee. It’s only
11 miles long with 318 turns. We met riders who had come to challenge the “Tail” from all over the world. We have many great picture
of the “Tail” including the “Tree of Shame”, which is a tree with the
remints of bikes that had crashed hanging from the branches, and
Sandra and I riding it at optimum speed.
Since I’ve been on the road I’ve seen many places that would be
awesome for the club to tour. I look forward to getting together
and talk about the opportunities; perhaps at our next ride or stated
meeting. Updates on rides will be coming by E-mail.
George Geanoulis, President
The Greeter Officers hope that all is well and having a nice Summer. Our next Greeter Meeting is July 13th so PLEASE attend your
Greeter meetings and our meetings are open to anyone interested
in checking out our Unit and or joining our unit.
If OUR Unit is to be a viable one, we need YOUR participation!!! Please attend your Greeter Shed meetings throughout the year. Remember, our meeting are on the second Wednesday of each
month unless you get an email from me stating otherwise. (Usually due to a conflicting SR event) Again this year we will be asking
you to contact me to RSVP your attendance at our meetings, so the
quartermaster can schedule enough food for everyone. You may
RSVP me back at this email address….. [email protected] or by
calling me at my cell 619-888-mike (6453).
Please mark YOUR calendars as a reminder of our meeting dates. Second Wednesday of each month.
The Officers would like to ask you that if you have any suggestion
on how to increase participation, please let us know.
We also are trying to plan a Greeters Fundraiser so we will need
your help in pulling this off. Please attend our next meeting to help
plan the details.

Hello, Nobles. Here it is July already, and 2016 is half past. Some
folks ask where the year has gone, and some ask, what is yet to
come this year? As you receive this issue, our Nation’s Independence Day is upon us. Unfortunately, I will not be at the Coronado
Fourth of July parade as I have been 24 of the last 28 years. I will
be instead, representing you again at the Imperial Shrine Sessions
in Tampa for five days. It is a time of deliberation, election, fraternal
friendship rekindling, and education. I look to learn what/how the
other 195 Shrine Temples worldwide have done this past year, and
what/how they will be doing hereon out.
We Shriners wear many hats both in the community in which we
live, and in Freemasonry. Excellence is our trademark in both. One
of these marks manifested itself in York Rite Commandery recently.
San Diego Commandery #25 Knights Templar was awarded the
Commandery of the Year 2016 by the Grand Commandery of
California. It also received the Crown and Cross Award for its
activities. Many Nobles of Al Bahr are also members of the
Commandery, and congratulations are in order to all members of
San Diego Commandery for your outstanding work. Many other
York Rite members, many of whom are also members of Al Bahr,
received other accolades and positions in the Grand York Rite
Sessions. Congratulations to you all – it is too many to list everyone individually in my 250 word limit.
Islanders Shrine Club
We are happy to our Club has been asked to prepare the meal for

We are over half way through 2016. It’s been fast paced and a lot of
fun. Take this time to look and see if you have your 2016 dues card.
It’s a plastic card gold in color. They are permanent cards and next
year we think you will just get a date sticker like the Scottish Rite
has. If you don’t have your card, have you paid your dues for 2016?
We have some people that still owe dues for 2016. We would love
to get these dues in as we use some of that money to pay bills and
other items for 2016. If you don’t have a card contact the office.
We can now look and see if your dues are paid, if they mailed you
a card, when they mailed it, and reorder a card if necessary. We
can also send you a version to print out until your real card arrives.
E-mail the office or give us a call and we can verify your address
and start to get all this straightened out.
You can email us at [email protected] , call us at 858-2920092, and even send us a fax at 858-292-5618. If you would
like to send a private note to the recorder you can do that at

“Shriners are Masons”...”We need to support our Blue Lodges.”
You hear those phrases a lot, but does the public see Shriners as
Masons? Do Shriners regularly attend Blue Lodge Degrees, Stated
Meetings, and special events? Maybe not as much and we’d like
to think. Well, on June 4th, the Shriners and Blue Lodge Masons in
La Mesa joined together as a team to put Masonry squarely in the
Public Eye in a positive and patriotic manner. Our Potentate allowed
the Past Masters Club and Drum and Bugle Corps to join with La
Mesa Lodge No. 407 in the La Mesa Flag Day Parade. The La
Mesa Lodge Officers, led by Wor. Lou Balke, P.M., marched down
La Mesa Blvd in Masonic aprons, jewels, and a top hat, proudly
carrying the National Ensign and a Masonic flag with the Square
and Compass on it. They were followed by the Shrine P.M. pickup, towing the D&B float with drummers and a bugle player. This
year the lodge also teamed up with Boy Scout Troop/Cub Scout
Pack no. 51 in La Mesa and handed out over 800 small American Flags to parade onlookers. The Scouts and Cubs marched
just in front of the La Mesa Lodge-Shrine entry. After the parade
the lodge hosted a “jumbo” hotdog luncheon for the participants.
Mike Seiler, President
Aooogah! July is here and that means parades! We once again
double up on the fourth of July with Coronado and Rancho Bernardo. Your President will once again be providing lunch for all drivers
that pull that double dip and attend Ranch Bernardo. Look for location information before the parade. We follow that with Descanso
on the 9th and then Pine Valley on the 30th. Don’t forget to change
that oil as July is hot and your engine will appreciate it! Here’s
hoping your President gets his Lizzie back in order for the parades
as they are way too fun to miss!
We are always looking for new drivers. We have a couple of nice
cars for sale right now in the shed. One even comes with the trailer
sized right for a Lizzie! I would expect you could get into a Lizzie and
have some great fun for the coming months if you act now! If you
are interested give me a call in the Recorders Office. Aooooogah!
Remember, it’s all for the kids.
