We make every effort to conduct the classes we advertise. However, in fairness to our instructors, there is a point when courses must be cancelled due to insufficient registration. With that in mind, please do not wait until the last minute to sign up for a class. You could be the one participant needed to meet the required minimum. Accident Insurance The City of Nacogdoches does not provide individual, team, or group accident insurance for participants in Parks and Recreation programs. We recommend that you check with your personal agent to assure coverage. Please report any injuries to your program supervisor. Refund Policy Persons needing to cancel out of a program may apply for a refund at the Recreation Center prior to the starting date of the program. Refunds will not be issued after the first class meeting unless a written statement from a physician is received indicating illness or disability. Judy B. McDonald Public Library Fall 2014 Youth Arts, Crafts & Music Arts and Crafts Instructor: Vicki Baggett Ages: 6 years & up Time: September 8 - December 8 Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30pm - 6:30pm Cost: $12/day, or punch card for 5 classes for $50 and a second child discount, 5 classes for $32 This class will explore a variety of media and types of art such as drawing, printmaking, painting, bookmaking, eco-art, and seasonal crafts. Within each project we will discuss the elements of art, the history of art and learn about the different methods of looking at art to understand it. Emphasis will be on exploration, process and, of course, fun. Come once, twice or 3 times a week! No classes the week of November 24 - 28. Adults learn to identify, interpret and support musical development in their children in a beautiful atmosphere of community. A live, playful, interactive class flowing with songs, dance, chants and instrumental jam sessions, the prelude to a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Parent participation is required. There will be no classes on October 14 or 21. Arts and Crafts Workshops Paper Marbling Instructor: Vicki Baggett Ages: 8 years & up Date/Time: September 27 and November 15 1:00pm - 2:30pm Cost: $12 Learn the ancient art of paper marbling. It is relaxing, beautiful, fun and anyone can do it! Princess T-Shirt Workshop Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3-12 years Date/Time: September 20, 1:30pm - 2:30pm Cost: $8 Students will create a T-Shirt fit for a queen. Students need to bring a short sleeve T-Shirt to decorate. All other materials will be provided. Students must be registered by September 16. Princess Tea Party Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3-8 years Date/Time: September 20, 3:00pm - 5:00pm Cost: $14 Dress as your favorite Princess, and come to a tea party you will never forget. Princesses will enjoy games, a craft, music, and tea party refreshments. Students must be registered by September 16. Mexican Sugar Skulls! Instructor: Vicki Baggett Ages: All Ages Date/Time: October 18 and October 25 1:00pm - 2:00pm Cost: $12 Learn about Mexico’s Dia de los Mertos (Day of the Dead), a festive celebration meant to honor deceased loved ones. Celebrate Day of the Dead in traditional fashion by decorating your own sugar skull. Dora the Explorer Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3-8 years Date/Time: October 18, 3:00pm - 5:00pm Cost: $14 After creating a backpack and receiving a map, participants will pretend to be Dora and go on an exciting exploration filled with story time, fun games, a creative craft and yummy refreshments. Please bring T-shirt. Students must be registered by October 14. Pumpkin Patch T-Shirt Workshop Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3-12 years Date/Time: October 18, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Cost: $8 Students will make an original T-Shirt using their hands, fingers and paint brushes. It will be a perfect pumpkin patch for the season. Students must be registered by October 14. Diva Pillow Case Workshop Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 14 years Date/Time: November 1, 3:00pm - 3:45pm Cost: $9 Students will create their own pillow case that releases their inner-Diva. All materials provided. Students must be registered by October 28. Sensational Spa Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 10 years Date/Time: November 1, 2:45pm - 3:45pm Ages: 11 - 14 years Date/Time: November 1, 4:00pm - 5:00pm Cost: $8 Participants will enjoy a relaxing atmosphere as they paint fingernails, toenails and get facials. Various massage techniques and facial cleansing techniques will be discussed. Students must be registered by October 28. Fabulous Fall T-Shirt Workshop Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 12 years Date/Time: November 1, 9:00am - 10:00am Cost: $8 Students will create an autumn T-Shirt to wear throughout the season. Participants will need to provide a plain T-Shirt or sweatshirt. All other materials will be provided. Students must be registered by October 28. Scooby Doo Mystery Party Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 8 years Date/Time: November 1, 10:30am - 12:30pm Cost: $14 Solve a case with Scooby and the gang. Students will pretend to be members if the mystery gang to play games, create a craft and enjoy refreshments. Students must be registered by October 26. Yule Time T-Shirt Workshop Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 12 years Date/Time: December 1, 6:30pm - 7:30pm Cost: $8 Students will create a unique Christmas T-Shirt to enjoy throughout the holiday season. Santa’s Little Helper Instructor: Crystal Kilmer Ages: 3 - 12 years Date/Time: December 8, 5:30pm - 7:00pm Cost: $15 Students will enjoy Christmas stories, games, music and refreshments. They will make a gift appropriate for the parents or grandparents such as ornaments, cards, gift sacks and much more. Parents can enjoy an evening to go Christmas shopping or just to relax. They learn a variety of positions that involve stretching and allowing movement of the body. Class is very versatile with different styles of Hip Hop. Tennis shoes required. Student have the opportunity to perform at local events throughout the year. Students will be grouped appropriately. Zumba® Kids Instructor: Mallery Garrett Ages: 5 - 12 years Date/Time: Fridays 5:30pm - 6:30pm Cost: $5/per class Perfect for our younger Zumba® fans! Participants get the chance to be active and jam out to their favorite music. Zumba® Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. We break down the steps; add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Students are taught how to fall and roll safely before learning escapes, throws, joint locks (not preformed on kids), striking and ground fighting. Classes are taught with encouragement and recognition of the strengths and challenges of each individual as lessons are adjusted to fit the needs of the student. The dojo (school) is affiliated with the United States Yoseikan Budo Association. New students are welcomed at any class! Join us for dynamic boot camp experience. We will mix cardio with strength training in this circuit training exercise class to get the most benefits out of the least amount of time. Cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the event will receive a full refund. Liberty Hall is available for parties, reunions or corporate functions. The facility has a small kitchenette and large meeting area with a maximum capacity of 75 people. Some tables and chairs are provided. *Price increase in 2015. Park Pavilion Rentals Contact: C.L. Cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the event will receive a full refund. Park pavilions are available to reserve for get-togethers. There are 15 different covered pavilions throughout the City and around Lake Nacogdoches. Celebrations by Crystal! Party Packages $100 Package includes room rental for an hour and a half, decorations, invitations, “thank you” notes, party games, and activities for eight (8) children. Choose from over 30 themes! Parents must pick up and mail invitations and “thank you” notes as well as supply cake, punch, or any other desired food items. There is an additional fee of $5.00 for any added children. Parties must be paid in advance, and cancellations must be requested three (3) weeks in advance. Goody bags are available for $3.00 each. Gymnastics Birthday Parties The Gymnastics area can be rented for supervised birthday parties. The fees are as follows: Up to 12 children - $75.00 for two hours 13 - 24 children - $125.00 for two hours Parties are reserved in 2 hour blocks of time on Saturdays only and includes set-up and clean-up. The house sits very close to the intersection of the old El Camino Real de los Tejas and La Calle de Norte and was home to many early businessmen, bankers and political leaders including Thomas J. Rusk, Bennet Blake and William Ochiltree. This hands-on museum includes a fully functioning smokehouse, blacksmith shop and chicken coop as well as heirloom gardens and a sugarcane mill. Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00am - 4:00pm Location: 211 S. LaNana Cost: Free The Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library is an 1830 dogtrot house built by prominent merchant and Texas Revolution leader, Adolphus Sterne. It was occupied by the Sterne family until 1869 when it was sold to thevon der Hoya family. The house remained in the von der Hoya family until it was donated to the City of Nacogdoches in 1958. Nacogdoches Railroad Depot Hours: Tuesday - Thursday, 11:00am - 3:00pm & Friday 10:00am - 4:00pm Location: 101 Old Tyler Rd. Cost: Free The Nacogdoches Railroad Depot was built by Southern Pacific Railways to replace the original wooden depot and opened on April 3 of 1911. The wooden depot was built in May of 1910 and burned to the ground less than a year later, after it was struck by lightning. The depot remained in service until 1954. Blast from the Past: Nacogdoches History Fair Date/Time: Saturday, October 11 9:00am - 2:00pm & Friday 10:00am - 4:00pm Location: Festival Park Cost: Free Visitors will be able to take part in everything from a simulated archeological dig to making their own pottery and from throwing an atlatl to flintknapping. Our favorite oxen, Liberty and Justice, will be back this year to do a Gin Pole and Oxen demonstration. Other activities include string music, Dutch oven cooking, blacksmithing and more. Trails & Lakes Lake Nacogdoches Lanana Creek Trail Lake Nacogdoches is a 2210 acre reservoir located 10 miles southwest of the City on FM 225. There are three pavilions, a swimming area, a fishing pier, & a boat ramp in the west side park. There are also tables, a swimming area, & another boat ramp on the east side of the lake. The Lanana Creek Trail system is over 6 miles of both paved & unpaved walking and/or biking paths. The trail is equipped with water fountains and emergency phones, & patrons are encouraged to enjoy the wooded scenery safely during the daytime.
