Don’t be one of those ones who said “Oh TEDxQueenstown. I really wanted
to go to that”. TEDxQueenstown arrives on Sunday 19th. Arrive is a small way
of introducing something that is coming to Queenstown that will blow your
mind, knock your socks off and ultimately connect you with a new group of
people you will want to spend every waking moment with, even after the event
is finished.
Let us explain.
TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as
a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support
people of this planet changing the face of the world we live in, with their ideas
that are ‘worth spreading’. More importantly talking at TED conferences for 18
minutes, their talks are then made available online and more importantly, free.
Through TED, TEDx was born to allow other countries, cities, towns, tribes,
collectives to show their speakers to the world on a smaller scale. The talks are
then projected onto the internet and again are on show for free allowing those
ideas to flow through to the rest of the world and more importantly to you the
audience.

Here at TEDxQueenstown we are in our third year of showcasing some of the
most exciting talks, discussions and ideas happening right now in our world.
Queenstown is not only lucky enough to be on the world’s stage for adrenaline
sports but right now it is the most exciting time to be here,
creatively and culturally.
Our very own Chuck Berry, skydiver, base jumper just performed on the
TED stage in Whistler, Canada, the first New Zealander to do so. We had
representatives from Queenstown attend the event. Our event this year is
bigger (300 tickets this year), more work (over 30 volunteers putting
over 4000 hours into the event), pushing limits of who we could bring to you
(we asked, they said yes), lighting, sound, food and music. Queenstown is an
exciting vibrant place to be right now with a layer of creativity so full to bursting
it keeps most of us awake at night and you can be a part of that.
Attending this event won’t just expand your mind to what is happening in New
Zealand and the world right now, it will also blow your mind to what you are
capable of doing. And who knows, there may be a TEDxQueenstown talk
inside you. Now that’s a idea worth spreading.

Muppet Pedestrians
Don’t you just hate it when pedestrians don’t look
when crossing the road. There you are driving away,
happy, when suddenly someone walks right out
infront of you.
Not for one moment did you think this would
happen, because a) speed was not an issue b) the
person looked and saw the car coming. Then bam!
Who is at fault? The pedestrian!
I can say this because that pedestrian was me. I was
trying to cross the road, I looked both ways but I
was more interested in traffic coming from the other
direction. I stepped onto the road, then bam! it was
nothing serious but I hit the wing mirror with my bag.
I don’t think I really registered what happened, I
continued crossing the road.
To person driving into town on the Gorge Rd, Thurs
9th April at 8am. I am SOOOOOOO SORRY!
Sorry for walking out infront of you. Sorry for
frightening the bejesus out of you, sorry for ruining
your day. But thank you for stopping even if I chose
to carry on walking, still thinking about what had just
happened. Time to get a coffee fix.

Parental Consent
The definition of annoying – heading out for a meal
with our 25 year old daughter and visiting elderly
parents only to be declined the sale of alcohol due
to our daughter not having her identification on her.
Even in the event our daughter was in fact 8 years
younger than her current age, we as her parents,
have the legal right to purchase her a glass of wine.
The fact it was our 3rd visit in 3 weeks with the same
cashier as an earlier visit with no previous request
for proof of age added to the fiasco that transpired.
I believe it would be a wise suggestion for the
bearded management of this certain establishment to
upskill himself and his fellow staff members on their
people skills and the current NZ drinking laws given
that they are indeed in the hospitality industry.

Taxi Drivers - Issue 494
Here I thought you were going to bring up there
appalling driving skills or lack there of. They are a law
to themselves, no indicating, double parking, erratic
movements. For people who spend there working
day on the road, they sure don’t show it.

Slow Walkers
I am intolerant of people who walk slowly, which
is to say, people who walk more slowly than I do.
I cannot stand: dawdlers, slow-pokes, tourists,
people who walk and then stop in the middle of
the sidewalk, laggards, dilly-dalliers, and iPhoneconsulters.
When we have to share common space, I feel
like we are all better served when each of us
takes reasonable measures to ensure we are not
announcing ourselves too loudly. That we’re not
taking up more than our share of the footpath, talking
at unnecessary volumes on the phone, or standing in
groups on the footpath having a chat. Those kinds of
acts are, I feel, deeply selfish. And entirely un-selfaware: walking too slowly is not a crime, so long as
you have the awareness to realize that it will frustrate
at least one other person who has to use the same
footpath, and have the politeness to elect to do it
well to the side. Footpaths are like streets.
Do the people who take their own sweet time in
the dead center of the footpath even notice the
frustrated pedestrians who are forced to eddy
around them, waiting for an opportunity to pass?
Probably not. It’s that blitheness I can’t stand. Part of
the social contract is doing your reasonable best to
not frustrate others as they go about their days. If you
want to walk slowly, move to the side.
Pick Up The Pace
I can understand the frustration of 50 minutes leading
to a ‘whinge’. However its temporary! The promise
and functionality of the three routes that is coming
on line is there now in concrete for every numb
nut whinger to see! Its as good as it gets anywhere,
actually better! So what? Queenstown people have
developed another half of an entire town at a fantastic
rate, and we still want no inconvenience! A traffic
jam to the rest of the world is being stationary on a
80 or 100kmh per hour highway for 3 minutes, then
creeping along at 15 kmh for 20 minutes! I’ve driven
in the “unacceptable congestion” written about,
which was doing 60 kmh in a 70kmh zone, and 40
in a 50! All this comes off as worse than Hedonism.

relationship with a New Zealand citizen/resident or a valid work visa

Fixed term part time position - Aircraft Service Person

You will have proven experience in a physically challenging and
safety conscious environment. Playing a key role in the operation at
Queenstown Airport, you will be working both indoors and outdoors,
