President’s Letter
Dear Fellow Members,
Isn’t it hard to believe that it’s already November, with
Thanksgiving and the December holidays just around
the corner?! Always a busy time of year, this month
there a couple of special Club events that promise to
be very entertaining—the November 2 Club Day
with authors Wendy Kann (Casting a Fragile Thread)
and Robert Douglas (The Last Resort) and the
Cultural Affairs matinee trip to 39 Steps on Saturday,
November 7, at the Schubert in New Haven. I’m sure
both of these will be great events, and I’m so grateful
to Doris Smart, Amy Schneider and Marilyn Killough
for organizing these for us.

For future Club Days and other membership events,
because parking spaces in the Club’s upper lot are
limited, we would like to ask all of our heartier
members to park in the lower lots and leave the upper
lot spaces available for those who might have more
difficulty maneuvering the stairs or the ramp. We
want to make sure that every member has appropriate
access to the Club and is able to attend all of our
events.
Thanks also to 1st V.P. Linda Clair for serving as the
Club’s Team Captain for the Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer Walk at Sherwood Island Park on
October 25. The team raised substantial funds and
proudly represented the Club at this important
community event. And, finally, I want to give special
thanks to Clare Clark and Colleen Fenton for all
their hard work in compiling our new membership
directory. If you haven’t yet picked up your copy,
please do so. They are available in the office.
Have a wonderful November and happy
Thanksgiving!
All the best,
Mary Vickery
As always, there are a number of people who deserve
special recognition for their service to the Club. First
I want to thank 3rd V.P. Susan Cugliari and her
Committee for a sensational Goal Post Bingo event.
This was the Club’s second bingo fundraiser, and it is
clear that the Bingo Committee has come into their
stride. It was truly a fun and fund-raising afternoon!
And for those of you who might feel you’ve been
missing out on all the excitement, I’ve heard rumors
that there is another bingo extravaganza in the works
for the spring. Check with Susan C. to find out how
you can become involved.
I also want to call attention to Audrey Rabinowitz
and her dedicated corps of Blues, Views & Barbecue
volunteers. The music festival and barbecue
competitions were a joint venture of the Downtown
Merchants Association and several local non-profits,
including the WWC. As one of the collaborators, we
were invited to staff a table at the event, where Clare
Clark and Sarajane Lynch and I took shifts handing
out Club membership and rental information. Audrey
did a truly outstanding job enlisting and organizing
Club volunteers to run the admissions gates. Thank
you to everyone who came out to help.

Club Luncheons
Thank you to Fay Farquhar and the Mah
Jongg players, and to Ellie Hale and the Book
Review group for hosting October Club
Day.
November’s Club Day will take place on
Monday, November 2. Our menu will consist
of Meat Loaf with Gravy, Mashed Potatoes,
Sugar Snap Peas, Rolls and Pumpkin Cake for
dessert. A chicken alternative is offered but
you must let Colleen Fenton know if that is
your lunch choice so the caterer can prepare
for the right amount of food.
Several members have mentioned that the
past two luncheon entrees have been too salty.
I have spoken to the caterer and he will now
follow a low sodium diet in the preparation
of the food. So, the salt lovers in the group
may find that they need to add table salt to
their lunch.
Community Service
The BULLETIN
Our next meeting is on Monday, November 23
at 9:30 am. All members are invited to attend
as we continue our grant review process, which
is a challenge given the severe economic downturn and record high unemployment rate. Our
guest speaker will be Kari Pesavento, Director
of the Children’s Connection, who will discuss
child abuse and internet safety. She will also
tell us about the children we donate toys to
each year at our Holiday Toy Drive.

November Club Day will be hosted by Arlene
Thrope, Pat Jensen and the Community Services Committee.
Cost: The cost of Club Day, $15, may be
paid in cash (the exact amount, if possible), or
check, payable to WWC (preferred method).
Reservations: Please call Colleen Fenton at
227-4240 by 1:00PM on the Wednesday prior to Club Day (October 28th) to make a reservation. If you are on the permanent lunch
list, there is no need to call for a reservation.
Cancellations: If you are on the permanent
list, let Colleen know by 1:00PM on the reservation deadline date (the Wednesday before
Club Day) if you cannot attend. Unfortunately, anyone who does not cancel either
a permanent or monthly reservation by the
reservation deadline is expected to pay for
the cost of the lunch, since the WWC must
pay the caterer for the number of lunches ordered.
I look forward to seeing you on November
2nd.

We are happy to announce that we will present
two delightful authors at the November Luncheon. Wendy Kann, who has written “Casting
With a Fragile Thread,” and Douglas Rogers
author of “The Last Resort,” will inspire you with
their amazing stories. After their presentation a
book signing will take place in the living room.
Both Amy and I were delighted to hear so many
positive responses to our October speaker. Susan
O’Halloran is a wonderful lady, and she truly
enjoyed her time at the Westport Woman’s Club.
We look forward to seeing all of you on November 2.

CHRISTMAS ARRANGEMENTS
RSVP KNITTING
Attention new members who knit!
In case you wonder what we’re all about,
R.S.V.P. stands for “Retired Senior Volunteer Program” which is headquartered in the
N.E.O.N. building in South Norwalk.
Talented Irish designer, Linda Dean
will be showing us how to do her
Christmas designs for the mantle,
dining room table and hall. Linda’s
work has been described as bright
and witty. She is well known and
respected in Ireland. This promises
to be an exciting, interesting and
entertaining program. Hope you can
all attend.
Most of the items we knit go to R.S.V.P.
They include: hats, scarves and mittens for
the Headstart Nursery School children; baby’s and children’s sweaters and blankets for
N.E.O.N. day care and other programs they
support for the needy.
You must R.S.V.P to me by Wednesday, November 4th, either by
phone or email. P.S NOTE TIME
CHANGE!
Our yarn for the R.S.V.P. items is donated
by R.S.V.P. or members and friends who
no longer knit. We use only synthetic yarn,
which is machine washable and dryable. We
do have many needles that have been donated, but not all sizes- what we have you are
welcome to use.
BOUTIQUE WORKSHOPS: All
workshops begin at 10:00am
Some of us also make healing shawls for the
Cancer Society and some make “preemie”
hats for Norwalk Hospital.
This should be and interesting
presentation.
Tuesday, December 1 – Gift Baskets
Wednesday, December 2 – DECK

the month from 1:00-3:00 pm in the conference room (upstairs), but because of the holidays in November and December, we meet

regular schedule in January.
Some members are not always able to stay
the whole time because of other commitments but do come to drop off finished items
and pick up more yarn and sometimes directions.
Book Club
We have beginners and experienced knitters
so there is always help with any problems.
Hope you’ll try us out.

“The 39 Steps” Saturday, November 7th
Shubert Theater, New Haven, CT
Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps,” the longest
running production of any Broadway play to
open in the last seven years in New York, will
end its run there in January but it will begin its
national tour in New Haven in November.
We have tickets to the Saturday matinee performance on November 7th. The seats are in the
orchestra. Therefore, there are no stairs or steps
to climb. The theatre trip is $75.00 per person
which includes theatre ticket, transportation
and gratuity to the bus driver. There will not be
time for lunch.
Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy
novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you
have Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps,” Broadways’ most intriguing, most thrilling, most riotous, most un miss’able comedy smash!
This comedy –thriller won two Tony Awards in
2008.
As of this writing (October 8th) there are 8
tickets available and, of course, we always need
a wait list. Tickets will be available for pickup in
the office on November 2nd.
The bus will leave from the Woman’s Club lower level parking lot at 12:30 pm on November
7th and return at approximately 5:30 pm.
“West Side Story” Wednesday, Dec,2nd
New York City
“West Side Story” is sold out with a wait list
of two. The wait list was four but cancellations
have started to come in and the cold and flu
season has started; therefore, we will need a longer wait list. It costs nothing to be on the wait
list but you must leave a check with Colleen in
the office; your check remains there until there
is a cancellation, then you are called and your
check is deposited in the bank. If there are no
further cancellations, your check is returned to
you.
Ben Brantley of The New York Times gave this
musical an excellent review when this show
opened. John Lahr of The New Yorker said in
his review “This fresh, bold production is so
exciting it makes you ache with pleasure. Everything about it is streamline: the fluid jolt of
Jerome Robbins choreography; the exhilarating
syncopation of Leonard Bernstein’s score; the
bravura concision of Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics;
the swiftness of Arthur Laurent’s storytelling.
It’s both airborne and transcendent, with moments of astonishing stagecraft.”
Cost of this theatre trip is $137.00 per person.
The bus will leave from the lower level parking
lot at 9:30 am and return immediately following the matinee performance. Running time of
the show is 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Curio Cottage
We Are Hiring!!!
What. a great headline for these times
and it is true. There is no pay, but the
job satisfaction is great.
Our list of people who can work on
either Tuesday or Sunday is growing.
When we have about 8 names, we will
call and get this on the schedule. So
please, if you are thinking about joining the shop work force, or if you are on
the sub list and not getting called, please
consider this “career move”. Just let me,
Jackie Froelich, or Colleen know.
Thanks to everyone who attended the
workers coffee. Great turn out and
great enthusiasm. Hopefully, the shop
will just keep getting better and better.
Holiday “stuff” is coming out now so
please stop in soon, to shop, donate or
work!
