SHAMBHALA
SPONSORSHIP
MAKES SELKIRK SING!
On October 12th there was a great deal of
excitement in the atrium of the Tenth Street
Student Residence as President Angus Graeme
announced that the Shambhala Music Festival has
agreed to purchase the naming rights for what
used to be called Studio 80.
Local politicians, donors, media, board members,
staff and students gathered for the special
announcement: Shambhala has agreed to a
$100,000 sponsorship ($75,000 cash and $25,000
in-kind) for the right to have the facility called the
Shambhala Music and Performance Hall for the
next ten years.
A permanent sign will be mounted above the
Shambhala Music and Performance Hall entrance
when the current renovation is complete.

EXERCISE IS MEDICINE IN THE WORKPLACE
Sports Medicine Bulletin - October 11, 2011: Selkirk Biology Instructor Delia Roberts’ research and ideas reached 15,000
health care professionals when her work was featured in the American College of Sports Medicine’s weekly newsletter
last week. Delia’s research is focused on programs for worksite health and injury prevention.
Integrated workplace health and safety is an emerging field which provides unique opportunities to promote healthy
living. The workplace presents an excellent opportunity for healthy lifestyle training.
It has been demonstrated repeatedly that workplace health promotion programs pay for themselves. The costs
associated with healthy lifestyle training at work are easily recovered through reduced medical expenditures,
decreased absenteeism, higher productivity and lowered health risks for employees.

SELKIRK COLLEGE FOUNDERS’ DAY – OCTOBER 16TH
Each year on October 16th, we remember the beginnings of Selkirk College through the celebration of Founders’ Day.
The first-ever celebration was held in 2009 when a crowd of almost 50 gathered in the Castlegar Staff Lounge to mark
the occasion. Charter students, instructors, alumni, community supporters, board members and staff celebrated the
genesis of Selkirk College with a special meal.
In 2014, and every five years thereafter, we will formally celebrate Founders’ Day with a special event to recognize
those who form the original group of students - the founders of Selkirk College.
So … a salute from Grapevine to the Selkirk founders!

TWO DAYS LEFT TO CONTRIBUTE
TO STUDENT SUCCESS …
The Selkirk College Gala 2011: ‘Destination Education’ is coming up fast. Selkirk’s
signature fundraising event happens November 19th at the Tenth Street
campus in Nelson. As the event organizers, securing fantastic auction items is
our number one priority. For the fourth year running, we are collecting Aeroplan miles from employees and auctioning
them off at the gala to the highest bidder.
In the past three years, faculty and staff have raised over 220,000 miles. Congratulations! At last year’s gala we raised
$3,000 when we auctioned off a 70,000 mile package. The funds helped several college programs with awards,
equipment and field trips.
Contribute to our students’ success by donating as many Aeroplan miles as you can part with. This year’s goal is 70,000
miles - which covers two airline tickets to anywhere in North America. The winner can accept the flight tickets or
redeem the miles for items on the Aeroplan website.
Our window for donations closes October 19th. Please go to the gala web page and fill out the form. Send it through
the internal mail to Pat Henman in Development, Tenth Street campus. If you have questions please call Pat at
250-505-1324.
Thanks in advance for your support,
Pat Henman and Joyce Buckler – Gala Coordinators
CARE FOR SOME FUNDING?
Applications are now being accepted up to October 21, 2011 for projects that meet the criteria of the Learning
Resource Fund. More information about the fund can be found at http://selkirk.ca/about/governance/
standingcommittees/learning-resource-fee/purpose/ .
This year we are looking at giving priority to projects that increase our capacity to attract and/or serve more learners,
such as web conferencing, web applications/functionality and course/exam scheduling.
Applications for project funding can be made online at http://selkirk.ca/about/governance/standingcommittees/
learning-resource-fee/applicationform/ .
We look forward to receiving your creative proposals!
WHO’S GOT SOCKS ?
In its sixth year, Selkik’s Nursing Co-op program is proving to be quite a success.
Nursing students provide basic health education and harm reduction strategies
to individuals in Nelson who are homeless, marginalized or living with a chronic
mental illness.
Four 3rd and 4th year students visit shelters, soup kitchens and mental health
facilities each week. Students find the work very rewarding and they learn a
tremendous amount about public health.
With winter coming, students are looking to faculty and staff for donations of socks. Socks are the single most needed
item in the Nursing Co-op and one of the most appreciated by the individuals the co-op serves.
You can bring your donations to Linda Gomez. Her office is on the Castlegar campus, #0121.
