Dear CMS Families,
Thank you for a wonderful school year to our
returning families! Welcome to our new families. Enclosed are several
things you will need to
know over the summer
and for next year. Parents of those students
who will be in the 8th
grade please pay particular attention to the shot
information. There is a
TDap booster required
for students between 7th
and 8th grades. Students
will not be allowed in
school until they have
been properly immunized. We are planning on
having immunizations
available at the Residency Verification Clinics in
July. Please see the information for residency
and reserve those dates
on your calendars now.
If you have any questions feel free to call anytime during the month
of June.
The regular 2015-2016
school year has come to
a close and we are about
half way through Summer School. Verification
Clinics will be held July
27 and 28. Everyone
proves residency every
year. However, this year
we are working toward
online residency for returning families/students.
You need to have a parent portal account to accomplish this. New fami-
lies or those needing a
multi-family affidavit
will need to physically
attend residency clinics
at Center High School.
We will be holding our
Orientation later this
year. Every student,
whether new or returning, should attend one of
these two sessions along
with a parent. We will
have orientation at Center Middle School on
Wednesday, August 10
at 6:30 PM. On Thursday, August 11 orientation will be held at 6:30
PM at Center Middle
School in the gold gym.
Please plan to attend one
of these two meetings.
Also included in this
letter is a Summer Reading List. The books on
the list are current award
winners- Gateway, Truman or Mark Twain
book awards. You do not
have to read the books
on this list but it is of
critical importance that
students continue to read
throughout the summer.
One of the ways students
score well on standardized tests is to be able to
read quickly and to comprehend what they have
read. To get better at
reading one must read.
We encourage all students to read books from
the list or books of their
own choosing this summer!
The school supply list
is part of this letter. You
may not be ready to
think about school supplies but the sales will be
here before you know
it! With the list in hand,
you will be able to take
advantage of sales as
they come along. As you
are planning please remember that planners are
$5. You can also purchase a pair of gym
shorts for $6. Students
will not be able to wear
gym clothing that does
not comply with dress
code. We hope to have
both planners and shorts
available at orientation
along with student
schedules.
Clothing is expensive
and we don’t want you
to purchase something
that students will not be
allowed to wear to
school. Please read
through the dress code
attached and feel free to
call throughout the summer if you have questions. We try to be inclusive with specifics in
terms of dress code violations but there is always some new trend
that we cannot anticipate. Administrators
and teachers do have the
authority to determine
what is appropriate
whether or not it is specifically stated in the
dress code. Dress code
violations will be given
per the policy. You will be asked to
bring alternative clothing to school
or the student may choose something from the nurse’s clothing that
is available. If neither of these options is available they will spend
the day in ISS.
Our first day of school is
Wednesday, August 17. This will
be a full day of school. We will
begin with an “A” day. School
hours are 7:30-2:30 and the building will be open each day at 7AM
with supervision.
If your student will be a 7th or
8th grader for the 2016-2017
school year and is planning on participating in athletics they will need
a physical. Physical forms will be
available in the main office
throughout the summer. Sports that
are available to students
are: Cross Country, Football and
Volleyball (fall); Basketball and
Wrestling (winter); Soccer and
Track & Field (spring). While completing the trip to the doctor be
sure to ask about immunizations.
The State of Missouri has a mandatory booster (TDap) that is required prior to 8th grade. According to State mandate, students who
do not have this booster may not
enter school until they have had
this TDap. If you have any questions feel free to contact Nurse Follis at 612-4018.
Attendance is vital to the success
of our District, our School and each
individual student. Our goal is for
every student to have 95% or better
average daily attendance for the
year. We will cover the attendance
procedure during orientation. Attendance and grades are related. We
want every student to succeed and
recognize your contribution in that
success. Grades will be distributed
every 3, 4 ½, 6 and 9 weeks. You
can see the grades at any time by
going to the parent portal. If at any
time you feel you need to do so,
please contact your student’s counselor or team of teachers. Contact
information is in each of the planners students must purchase at the
beginning of the year.
The Chromebooks will not be distributed initially as we educate students in their use. Both parents and
new students will be required to
sign a user agreement prior to students receiving their Chromebooks.
This will be done at the Back-toSchool Night which will be held on
Thursday, September 1st from 67:30 PM. Please plan to be in attendance. We will provide hot
dogs, chips, cookies and drinks.
You can sign your agreements in
the gym on the main floor (the gold
gym) following a brief presentation
about Chromebooks/use. You can
also visit teachers and receive a syllabus for each class. A representative from the Public Library will be
here to sign students up for a free
library card. Students can then access on-line tools from the library
from their Chromebooks at school,
from the library or from home. The
Chromebooks will not be distribut-
ed unless we have a signed form
from you. We are planning to distribute the Chromebooks for grades
7th and 8th on Wednesday, August
31st. Chromebooks for 6th grade and
any student new to CMS will be
distributed after Labor Day. We
are dedicated to this Board approved initiative being successful.
Chromebooks and carrying bags are
provided to students at no cost and
the expectation is students will care
for these items. The replacement
cost for a Chromebook is $208.
The first PTA meeting for the
2016-2017 school year will be held
Monday, August 14th at 6 PM in the
cafeteria at Center Middle School.
We will need volunteers for various
functions throughout the year. The
first of these is helping with Backto-school Night on September 1.
Dates for other PTA meetings for
the year are: September 12th, October 17th, November 21st, January
9th, February 13th, March 20th and
April 17th. There are no meetings in
December or May. I encourage everyone to become a member.

ONLINE REGISTRATION
Online REGISTRATION/ENROLLMENT for the 2016-2017 school year will be available very
soon for returning Center Families, here are a few quick reminders about the process:
We will start online enrollment in a few weeks. You will receive an email with instructions and
details at that time.
You will use your Infinite Campus parent portal account to enroll online.
Enrollment can only happen online if you have a portal account that is active.
Parents who do not remember usernames and passwords need to contact Jim Meckel via email

1) Two (2) current utility bills (within the last 30 days) to prove residency.
a) Each document must contain the name and address of the parent or legal guardian responsible for the
student.
b) The only ACCEPTABLE documents are:
Current Water bill from Kansas City Water Services Department
Current Gas bill from Missouri Gas Energy (MGE)
Current Electric bill from Kansas City Power & Light (KCPL)
Current Cable bill
c) NOT acceptable:
NO Disconnect Notices or Final Bill Notices
NO Lease Agreements
NO Cell Phone Bills

2) Parent or legal guardian needs to bring a valid Driver’s License or State ID with them.

School Dress Code
2016-2017
Students should dress in a manner that reflects respect for one’s self, family, and school. Extremes in dress or per-
sonal appearance, which disrupt the learning environment or interfere with the intended function of the school, are
unacceptable. School dress as defined by District Policy is, dress, which reflects favorably upon a positive instructional and learning atmosphere. Please note that we cannot foresee fashion trends or possible dress issues. The administrative team has the latitude to decide whether dress is appropriate or not even if
the violation is not specifically stated in the list below. The following standards are guidelines for appropriate dress for school and school functions:

Clothing depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, violence, obscenities, or suggestive language is prohibited

Clothing that bares the shoulders, back or midriff is not permitted. Shoulders must be covered

Shirts and blouses must fully cover the waist and pants may not sag below the waist.

Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be below fingertip length to be considered appropriate. Wearing leggings
or other items of clothing under dresses, skirts or shorts that do not meet requirements does not solve the
problem.

Sagging is not permitted at CMS.

Glasses or contacts that are not prescription are potentially damaging to student’s vision and are not allowed

Facial piercings are discouraged and lip, nose, eyebrow rings may not be worn to school.

Shoes will be worn at all times. To prevent injury to a student’s feet no slippers or flip-flops can be worn.

Hats, head coverings (such as, but not limited to: doo-rags, shower caps, scarves, hats, caps bandannas) or
hoodies, gloves, chains, sunglasses, boxer shorts, pajama bottoms, tight or revealing clothing are inappropriate and not permitted.

Clothing, insignias or other symbols indicating membership in, affiliation with, or support for any prohibited organization, such as gangs, either on school grounds or at school- sponsored activities is prohibited.

Coats and backpacks are to be kept in the student’s locker during the school day.

Clothing with holes, rips and/or cutoff pants are not appropriate. This includes “distressed jeans”

Tight leggings, jeggings or stretch pants are not to be worn alone.

Any pant and/or skirt deemed too tight will not be allowed.

Students are not permitted to wear headphones in the building unless required to complete an assignment.

Infractions of the dress code will result in a consequence according to the board student code
of conduct. When, in the judgment of the administration, a student’s appearance or mode of
dress is deemed inappropriate, the student will be required to make modifications.
