BLKRT U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 102 Commerce, Texas 75428 May 2016 A PUBLICATION OF THE COMMERCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Page 2 CHAMBER P re s ide nt ’s L e tt er May 2016 CHAMBER Board of Directors Dear Chamber Members, Executive Board It is with heavy heart that I write this month's letter, Commerce has suffered a great loss. Dr. Dan Jones was a wonderful man, great leader, and pillar of our community. I am happy to have had the opportunity to sit on the Chamber Board with Dr. Jones for the last three years and all of us at The Chamber of Commerce will miss him dearly. Shelly Gerard Julie Gentle Julie Gentle Joe Shipman Scott Ward On Friday as I was working and about town, everyone I ran into had a great story to share, I heard from students, co-workers, acquaintances and friends. I remember the first time I met Dan and Jalinna Jones, we were sitting outside at The Kilted Monkey. They had their new puppy Bellini. Of course I could not resist petting her. I walked up and introduced myself, they were very welcoming. Ever since whenever I ran into Dr. Jones or Jalinna they always took the time to say hello exchange hugs and chat a little. As I am learning from all of the stories this was the case with most people. Although I have never been a daily part of their lives I consider them friends. David Collier, ONCOR Blake Cooper, CISD Bonnie Hunter, CEDC We often don't realize how many people's lives that a single person can touch. Every one of us has the power to make an impact on someone else's life no matter how great or small. Let us take a lesson from Dr. Jones and try to make every encounter a good one. Our thoughts and prayers all go out to his family and friends during this devastating time in their lives, God grant them strength and peaceful hearts and may they find comfort in their loving memories. Sister Jazzmine Trotman welcomed everyone to the event and Brother Marion Greer did a reading about the rich history of Griffith Chapel. There were speakers and music and a home town almost revival type atmosphere at this special Ribbon Cutting. Brother Douglas Stiggers and Elder Diana Casteel spoke as well as Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Paul Voss. The final speaker was the pastor Katrina Trotman with pledge for the church to become involved more in the community as a new Chamber member. They arranged a tour of the facility and spoke about some new property the church hoped to begin a new building on. Pictures and a farewell luncheon topped off a great event that most of the Chamber members will never forget. The Chamber of Commerce is proud to have as it’s newest member, Griffith Chapel and look forward to a long and prosperous partnership with them. All undergraduate and graduate students with a management, marketing or business analytics major can apply for the scholarship within the university scholarship portal. The scholarship was created to encourage students at both schools to engage in academic research. "The scholarship fund was royalties for Dr. Chou and me for a case study published by Sage," says Dr. Han. "This is our first time to receive royalties. We wanted to use this money to do something meaningful. So, Dr. Chou and I donated the money as scholarships for students at our respective universities. We want to support students who are interested in academic research to achieve a greater goal." Gr aduate Students Win Big At Gr aduate Student Research Symposium By Sara Wray Two Graduate students at Texas A&M University-Commerce won awards at this year’s Federation of North Texas Area Universities’ Graduate Student Research Symposium. The Federation of North Texas Area Universities was established in 1968 with guidance from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The Federation permits the sharing of resources between A&M-Commerce, the University of North Texas, and Texas Women’s University. Each year, the Federation hosts the Graduate Student Research Symposium. The annual event gives graduate students the opportunity to connect and share their research via poster presentations with students and faculty from each of the three universities. The winners receive cash awards with third place receiving $100, second place receiving $250, and first place receiving $500. There are two categories for the awards, one being Education, Humanities, Social Sciences and Business, and the other category being Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. “This event is always a capstone experience for graduate students from our three institutions,” said Arlene Horne, vice provost for research and dean of graduate studies. “The Federation Symposium this year was especially noteworthy because of the exceptional presentation by the keynote speaker, Dr. Larry Lemanski. We have received many comments on the lessons learned from the presentation, especially the encouragement of graduate student participation in research, presentation of that research, and publication of that research while still in graduate school. Many comments were also received from our faculty judges on the outstanding quality of the graduate student presentations. Overall, this year’s Federation Symposium was a rousing success!” This year, two A&M-Commerce students won prizes in their categories. Nelly Shora won first place in the Education, Humanities, Social Sciences and Business category, while Jacob McCabe won second place in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math category. www.visitlakecounty.org Visit These Restaurants To Celebrate Braum’s......................................................................................903-886-6149 Lone Star Eatery, Grill and Bar..................................................903-886-2121 Lulu’s Burgers............................................................................903-886-3888 McDonalds # 10645...................................................................903-886-7771 McKay’s Country Kitchen & BBQ...........................................903-886-6080 Omega’s Biscuits & Eggs..........................................................903-246-3002 Sonic Drive-In............................................................................903-886-7166 “I had a great experience at the Graduate Student Research Symposium,” said Shora. “This was my second year participating, and I enjoy it because it allows us to have the opportunity to meet and learn from students in other disciplines. As graduate students, we don’t always have the chance to meet students outside of our own area, so events like this help us to expand our networks and appreciate the work being done across the university. There was excellent competition, and I am so impressed by the outstanding work A&MCommerce students are doing.” Page 6 CHAMBER May 2016 Our Community Lamar Red River Fannin Delta Hopkins Rains Kaufman Van Zandt Dallas COMMERCE 101 Kings Plaza, Ste. The scholarship will ready the department for a Phase-I Noyce Scholarship to be jointly administered by the College of Science & Engineering and the College of Education & Human Services. The different projects will relate to teacher education within the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, such as the shift of calculus-based physics courses to studio mode and the creation of a learning assistant program within those classes, a new master’s program in physics for in-service high school physics teachers, and the Texas Teacher Residency Program, which provides stipends for students to be placed in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) classrooms with mentor teachers while obtaining an education master’s. “I am very excited that our NSF Noyce Capacity Building Project has been funded,” said William Newton, assistant professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. “This project will further our capacity to prepare quality physics CONWAY COMPANY CPAs, PC ACCOUNTANTS AND ADVISORS www.conwaycpas.com Office 903-886-2123 Facsimile 903-886-6580 1021 Park Street Commerce, TX 75428 teachers by creating a community of practice that will develop instructional materials for high school and college physics classes. The community will be created by bringing together the Department of Physics & Astronomy’s undergraduate learning assistants, in-service physics teachers in our new master’s program, and students in the Texas Teacher Residency Program run by the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.” A Teacher-in-Residence will help the project team create the community from students and teachers involved in each project. They will base the community around the development of educational materials for high school physics and college introductory physics courses that address areas of conceptual difficulty, provide common teaching resources, and provide opportunities for participants to perform action research in their classrooms to measure the learning outcomes of those components. The departments also plan to continue the ongoing reformation of the physics teacher preparation program to allow for physics teachers to efficiently complete the program via the courses that use the best practice pedagogy and to lower the barriers to recruitment. Page 8 CHAMBER May 2016 Our Community Dr. “Chuck” Arize Receives Lions Legacy Distinguished Professor of Business Administr ation Title By Sara Wray Dr. Augustine “Chuck” Arize was recently awarded the Lions Legacy Distinguished Professor of Business Administration title. Since 1975, the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Commerce has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which is the premiere accrediting agency for programs in business administration. This makes A&M-Commerce one of the five percent of the world’s business schools that have achieved AACSB accreditation. One of the pillars of the AACSB accreditation is to conduct and publish research that makes an impact, so the College of Business received commitments of $250,000 to build their first college-wide endowed distinguished professorship. The holder of this endowed professorship will be the faculty member with the highest h index, which is a measure of scholarly research impact. His research has had exceptional impact, being cited nearly 2,700 times in the scholarly literature. Moreover, the impact that Dr. Arize has had on students, faculty, and the university goes beyond his scholarly efforts. “Dr. Arize is the epitome of the great scholar/teacher,” said Ogunc. “His students consistently rate him as one of the most effective and engaging classroom professors on our campus. This award is justly deserved.” Dr. Sakoglu Awarded Proquest Inc. Research Gr ant By Julia Gessner ProQuest Inc. has awarded Dr. Unal “Zak” Sakoglu a research grant to research and develop efficient Enterprise Information Management systems, which will be able to process large amounts of data. “Developing efficient data management systems to efficiently organize, analyze and make sense of large amounts of data, for example, ‘big data,’ and to extract useful information is very important and that is what we will be doing in this project for ProQuest,” said Sakoglu. In addition to research funding, the ProQuest grant will allow for the support of a full-time graduate assistant as a researcher. “External research and development grants like this are very important for our department, where graduate research assistantships are scarce,” said Sakoglu. “Involving and supporting graduate students with external funding have a big positive impact on the students' studies. Getting funding from industry, where money is tight, is especially important. I would like to thank ProQuest for this award. I have been and will be seeking more external grants and awards to do research and development and to involve and support more students." According to ProQuest, the company empowers researchers and librarians around the world by using its innovative information content and technologies to increase the productivity of students, scholars, professionals and the libraries that serve them. May 2016 Page 11 SS Good Neighbor Christened at Children’s Museum The largest ship in Commerce was christened at the Great Outdoor Discovery Area at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum. Since the ship was finished in February, walking the gangplank or climbing the rock wall has become a popular activity at the Children’s Museum. Plans for the ship were purchased by Dixie Turman and her husband, Bob Stachowiak. Working with a group of volunteers with expertise in building, the blueprint was transformed into a strong wooden structure with a slide and climbing wall. The volunteers that worked on the ship were led by Bob Stachowiak and Justin Crossland and included Joe Shipman, Justin Bryant, Charlie Smith, Greg Hooten, Luke Hooten, Jim Patton, Tony Hunter, Jim Brown, Al & Rose Stapleton, Don & Debbie Daffron. The group was recently recognized at the Commerce Chamber of Commerce Banquet with the 2015 Distinguished Community Service Award. “I cannot say enough about the group of volunteers who built the SS Good Neighbor. The group worked ten hour days in January and February to get the ship ready for the children. The ship has become a highlight for all visitors to the Children’s Museum,” said Sharline Freeman, Director of the Children’s Museum. The SS Good Neighbor now proudly flies the flag of Dixie Turman State Farm Insurance. “I wanted to do something for the Children’s Museum that would benefit the children in our area. The SS Good Neighbor provides a variety of ways that children can play. They can climb the rock wall, go down the slide, or run up the gang plank. I love driving by the Children’s Museum and seeing all the children on the SS Good Neighbor,” said Dixie Turman of Dixie Turman State Farm Insurance.
