For more than 20 years I have been walking the ground where Australian troops fought and died, and it is always a rare privilege to explore these battlefields with fellow Australians. And now, the memories of the courage and sacrifice of Australian troops have never been more important, as we continue to commemorate the 100-year anniversaries of the battles of the First World War. In 2016 we will participate in the centenaries of two of the most significant battles in Australia’s history – Fromelles and Pozieres. 2016 is also the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam. I’m very excited to be bringing so many Australian travellers to the battlefields and look forward to sharing with you the spirit of those brave generations who gave so much in the name of Australia. Mat McLachlan About Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours Mat McLachlan is a leading Australian battlefield historian, author and television presenter. There are now more veterans in the Australian community than at any time since the Vietnam War. Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours has launched a program to assist these young veterans as they make the difficult change from military to civilian life. Homes for Heroes ‘Australians Joining Forces’ will assist contemporary veterans to find work once they leave the Defence Force, and to help make their transition out of the military less stressful for them and their families. The Kikutsuki was used during the original Japanese landings on Tulagi on May 3, 1942 and was sunk the next day by planes from Admiral Fletcher’s carriers, Yorktown and Lexington, in what can be regarded as the opening shots in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
