Seattle Sounders FC begins its quest for a record fifth Lamar Hunt
U.S. Open Cup title Wednesday evening against the Kitsap Pumas at Starfire Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM). Entering the
nation’s longest-running soccer tournament in the Fourth Round,
Wednesday’s local derby marks the second all-time matchup
between the two sides.
Four-time U.S. Open Cup champions, the Rave Green have displayed dominance in the tournament since joining MLS in 2009.
This unprecedented stretch ties the Chicago Fire for the most
U.S. Open Cup championships by an MLS club. In 2011, Seattle
became the first club since 1968 to win three straight U.S. Open
Cups.
Assistant Coach Brian Schmetzer will serve as Head Coach for
tonight’s match due to Sigi Schmid’s suspension following last
year’s Open Cup loss to Portland.
Following Wednesday’s match, Sounders FC returns to MLS action with a road match against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday,
June 19 at Red Bull Arena (4:30 p.m. PT / FS1, KIRO Radio 97.3
FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

SOUNDERS FC vs. KITSAP PUMAS | JUNE 15, 2016 - 7:30 P.M. PT
THIS WEEK VS. KITSAP PUMAS
SOUNDERS FC OPEN CUP RECORD
ABOUT KITSAP PUMAS
The Kitsap Pumas currently sit sixth in the USL PDL Northwest Division with
eight points (2-3-2 record) so far this season. The Bremerton-based club has
won two of its last three games - including a 2-1 road win over the Portland
Timbers U-23s on June 10 at Sparks Field and a 1-0 home win over Sounders
FC U-23 on May 28. Coach Cam McDonald’s squad advanced to the Fourth
Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 upset win over USL
side Sacramento Republic FC at Bonney Field on June 1.
Leading scorer Mike Ramos paces the club with three goals on eight shots
in PDL play, while Jesus Sanchez holds the team-lead with a pair of assists
to go along with one goal. Javier Castro currently has three goals in the 2016
U.S. Open Cup Tournament, including a brace in the win over Sacramento
Republic. Matt Grosey mans the nets for the Pumas, allowing five goals in 406
minutes of action for a 1.11 goals against average.
GOING FOR THE RECORD
Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash is Seattle’s first in its attempt
to recapture the title last claimed two years ago. In 2014, Sounders FC
became the second MLS team to win its fourth Open Cup trophy, joining the
Chicago Fire.
All told, 11 teams in the 101-year history of the tournament have won three
or more championships. Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel lead all
teams with five wins, while the Greek American AA, Philadelphia Ukranians,
Chicago Fire and Fall River Marksmen have all captured four titles. Along with
Sounders FC, the other three-time winners include the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms, Stix, Baer and Fuller, D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City,
who won the 2015 title.

2015 U.S. OPEN CUP FLASHBACK
Seattle Sounders FC dropped a 3-1 result to the Portland Timbers at Starfire
Stadium in the Fourth Round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sounders FC exited the competition after its first match for the second time since
entering Major League Soccer in 2009. Last year’s home defeat marked the
first-ever loss for Sounders FC at Starfire Stadium in the MLS era, after the
home side went down to a seven men following the ejection of three players
and an injury to another throughout the contest.
The contest was marked by eight total bookings and three ejections, beginning with a second yellow card for Sounders FC captain Brad Evans in the
69th minute. Despite playing with only ten men at the time, the Rave Green
rallied to secure an equalizer down the stretch, as Dylan Remick served in
a corner-kick in the 79th minute that fell to Seattle forward Obafemi Martins.
The Nigerian pounced on a failed clearance from Portland goalkeeper Adam
Kwarasey, cleaning-up a loose ball inside the Timbers six-yard-box to make
the score-line 1-1.
Portland claimed the lead once more through Rodney Wallace in the 100th
minute of play, with his strike promptly followed by the ejections of Micheal
Azira and Clint Dempsey in the 111th and 112th minutes, respectively. Sounders FC conceded a third goal to Portland courtesy of Maximiliano Urruti in the
116th minute to cap the night’s scoring.

LAST TIME VS. KITSAP PUMAS
Mike Fucito scored twice as Seattle Sounders FC topped the Kitsap Pumas
2-1 night in the Third Round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in front of
3,811 fans at Starfire Sports Stadium. The Rave Green would eventually go on
to become the first team in 42 years to capture a third consecutive Open Cup
title, defeating the Chicago Fire in the Final at CenturyLink Field.
Fucito’s game-winning goal came in the 62nd minute when Michael Seamon
played him into the right side of the box. Using some quick footwork to maneuver around a Kitsap defender and away from goalkeeper Bryan Meredith,
Fucito then blasted a right-footed shot past Meredith, giving Sounders FC a
2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Harvard graduate’s first goal came in the 39th minute when Seattle
forward Nate Jaqua headed down a cross to Fucito in the box. Fucito sent a
left-footed volley across Meredith and into the back of the net.
Sounders FC dominated the Pumas in total shots (25-7) and shots on goal
(8-1). Impressive goalkeeping from Meredith kept the Pumas in the match late,
as he recorded six saves.

SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTES
LAST MATCH REWIND: AT D.C.
• The win snaps a three-match losing streak for Sounders FC and brings
the club’s overall record to 5-7-1. At 16 points, Seattle currently sits ninth in
the Western Conference, just four points behind the red line for postseason
qualification.
• With his team-leading fifth goal of the season, Homegrown Player Jordan
Morris has set a new franchise mark for goals scored by a rookie, topping
Steve Zakuani’s previous record of four in 2009. The Stanford product led the
team with four shots on Wednesday, all of which were on-frame.
• Joevin Jones scored his first Sounders FC goal with an 83rd minute strike.
It was the second career MLS tally for Trinidad & Tobago international, who
found the net for the Chicago Fire on April 4, 2015 against Toronto FC.
• Rookie defender Tony Alfaro made his second-straight appearance as an
injury substitute when he came on for Zach Scott in the 40th minute. The University of California-Dominguez Hills product made his MLS debut on Saturday
when he replaced the injured Brad Evans in the 40th minute against the New
England Revolution.
• The result extends the Rave Green’s six-match unbeaten streak against D.C.
United (5-0-1). Sigi Schmid’s side is 7-2-2 all-time against the Black-and-Red,
including a 4-1-1 record at RFK Stadium. Sounders FC also captured the 2009
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win over D.C. United at RFK Stadium.
S2 WINS SECOND STRAIGHT MATCH
Forward Myron Samuel and midfielder John Magnus provided the scoring in
the first half, as Sounders FC 2 (3-7-4, 13 points) held off Portland Timbers 2
(5-7-2, 17 points) for its second consecutive victory. The result gives S2 its first
road win of the 2016 USL campaign. Next up, S2 squares off against Swope
Park Rangers at Starfire Stadium on Sunday, June 26 (5:00 p.m. PT / Livestreamed on SoundersFC.com).
Samuel began the scoring in the 35th minute with his first goal of the season.
Samuel, who returned to USL action after competing with the St. Vincent and
the Grenadines national team for Caribbean Cup Qualifiers last week, finished
off a lofted back-post cross from Magnus from close range. In the 43rd minute,
Magnus, a Sounders FC Academy player, opened his USL scoring account
after his shot attempt deflected into the bottom right corner of the net.
In the second half, Portland earned one back off the foot of Blake Bodily. The
forward placed the ball above goalkeeper Charlie Lyon to slice the lead in half.
S2 held the 2-1 lead, though, to earn its second consecutive win against a
Cascadia rival.
FIVE FULL-STADIUM MATCHES IN 2016
Seattle Sounders FC announced that it is opening the full capacity of CenturyLink Field for five select matches in 2016, including four clashes against
Western Conference rivals, as well as New York City FC’s first-ever visit to
Seattle. Additional upper-deck seating in the 300-level is being made available
for games against NYCFC (June 25), LA Galaxy (July 31), Portland Timbers
(August 21), Vancouver Whitecaps FC (September 17) and Real Salt Lake
(October 23). Single-match tickets for these contests and the Sounders FC
Five-Match Packs are available now via SoundersFC.com or by calling (877)
MLS-GOAL. Starting at $25 per seat, the five-match pack includes tickets to
each of the full-stadium fixtures for the best possible value.
By opening to full-stadium capacity for these select matches in 2016, Sounders FC continues to set the standard for soccer support in North America.
Since entering Major League soccer in 2009, the Rave Green and their fans
have led MLS in single-season attendance season and hold an active streak of
133 consecutive MLS sellouts, a league record.
Sounders FC has proven to be a dominant host when playing in front of larger
crowds on its home turf. With crowds surpassing 45,000 or more, Sounders
FC holds a record of 15-2-3, including postseason play. Of the five opponents
Sounders FC is set to face in this year’s full-stadium games, Vancouver is the
only one to record a win on the big stage at CenturyLink Field (2-2-0). Portland
(0-4-0), LA (0-3-2) and Real Salt Lake (0-2-0) are all winless in Seattle in front
of 45,000 or more, while NYCFC is set to play its first match on the Xbox Pitch
at CenturyLink Field.
FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY
Seattle Sounders FC forwards Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez competed
for the United States and Paraguay National Teams, respectively, for the 2016
Copa América Centenario this month. Dempsey and the USMNT advanced
to the Quarterfinals after finishing first in Group A, while Valdez and Paraguay
were knocked out of the tournament.
For the Stars and Stripes, Dempsey scored a goal and recorded two assists in
a 4-0 win against Costa Rica on June 7 in Chicago. He also provided the lone
goal in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. With 51 career international goals, Dempsey
joins Landon Donovan as the only players to reach 50 goals with the USMNT.
Additionally, injured defender Román Torres was called into Panama’s squad
as an honorary captain. The 2016 Copa América Centenario began on June
3 at 10 venues across the United States. Panama finished third in Group D
behind Argentina and Chile.
Seattle is one of 10 metropolitan hosting matches during the Copa América
Centenario, which honors 100 years of the Copa América tournament and runs
from June 3-26 throughout the United States. CenturyLink Field hosted two
Group Stage matchups, beginning with Haiti vs. Peru on June 4 and Argentina
vs. Bolivia on June 14. CenturyLink Field is also hosting a Quarterfinal match
on June 16 between the United States and Ecuador.
Additionally, S2 players Myron Samuel (St. Vincent the Grenadines) and Jordy
Delem (Martinique) competed in Caribbean Cup qualifiers earlier this month,
with Martinique securing advancement. Both players recorded a goal in the
tournament.
CLUB TO CELEBRADE PRIDE DAY
Seattle Sounders FC is celebrating the club’s second annual Pride Day on
Saturday, June 25 during a nationally televised match against New York City
FC (2:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM). In the first
of Sounders FC’s five full-stadium matches of the season at CenturyLink Field,
Seattle Mayor Ed Murray is set to receive a Golden Scarf during pre-match
ceremonies along with other elements to promote messages of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender and Queer pride. Additionally, pride flags are being
distributed to the first 50,000 fans upon entering the gates.
“We are looking forward to celebrating Seattle’s LGBTQ community on June
25, and we are equally excited to recognize Mayor Murray with a Golden
Scarf,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer. “Pride is a central part of
our city’s culture, and we’re eager to support the community surrounding our
match against New York City FC.”
Sounders FC is proud to welcome Seattle Mayor Ed Murray to receive a Golden Scarf during a pre-match ceremony on June 25. The Aberdeen, Washington native was elected Mayor of Seattle in 2013, becoming the first openly gay
mayoral leader of the Emerald City. Since 2009, Sounders FC has honored
soccer tradition and community empowerment before select home matches by
presenting a Golden Scarf to a group or individual who has made an impact in
their community. Last year’s Pride Day featured a Golden Scarf presentation to
Jason Collins, a 13-year NBA veteran who became one of the first openly gay
athletes in in a major American team sport when he came out in a cover story
for Sports Illustrated in 2013.
“I am humbled to be awarded the Sounders FC Golden Scarf as Seattle comes
together to celebrate Pride,” said Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. “The Sounders
have been a tremendous ally in recognizing and embracing LGBTQ fans and
athletes of all sports. It’s an honor to join the festivities during this year’s Pride
Match, which is quickly turning into a Seattle and MLS tradition.”

SOUNDERS FC vs. KITSAP PUMAS | JUNE 15, 2016 - 7:30 P.M. PT
SOUNDERS FC HISTORY
HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID
Named the first Head Coach of Seattle Sounders FC
on December 16, 2008, Sigi Schmid is the winningest
coach in MLS history. Since 1999, Schmid’s teams have
won nine major titles, including two MLS Cups.
A two-time MLS Coach of the Year, Schmid has led
Sounders FC to seven-consecutive appearances in the
MLS Cup Playoffs, marking the second-longest active
streak while nearing the record for most consecutive
postseason appearances by an expansion team.
Schmid also guided Sounders FC to a record three-straight Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup titles, becoming the first team in 42 years to win back-to-back
championships.
Schmid joined Sounders FC in its inaugural campaign after leading the Columbus Crew to its first MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, earning MLS Coach
of the Year honors in 2008. From 1999 through 2004, Schmid’s L.A. Galaxy
teams won four major competitions: the 2002 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield,
the 2001 U.S. Open Cup and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions Cup. He was
voted the MLS Coach of the Year in his first season, 1999. Altogether, his Galaxy teams were 79-53-32 and reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning
three division crowns.
Schmid has twice served as the U.S. U-20 National Team head coach, most recently in 2005 at the FIFA World Championships. Schmid first forged a winning
tradition at his alma mater, UCLA. After serving as an assistant, he was elevated to head coach of the Bruins in 1980, beginning a 19-year run at the helm.
He claimed three national titles (1985, 1990, 1997) and was named national
coach of the year following the 1997 championship. His UCLA teams accumulated a record of 322-64-33. Schmid ranks No. 1 in MLS career victories (227)
and games coached (499). Overall, Schmid’s record in MLS is 227-160-112.
His combined postseason win total (26) is the second-highest in MLS history.
