Members Newsletter Apr 2014 / Issue 1 President’s Message First of all, in this President’s Message, I must extend my heartfelt appreciation to all our patrons, members and friends who had rendered tremendous and generous support in sponsoring, organizing and / or participating during the whole process of the fundraising event of「 梁 祝 ˙ 十 藝 」Butterfly Lovers Remix Musical Performance. This event was successfully held on 21 Dec 2013 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. This event was so unprecedented in our Association. We had not just created history in Hong Kong by encompassing 10 cultural arts in one evening performance of 「 梁 祝 ˙ 十 藝 」 Butterfly Lovers Remix under the theme of this Chinese legendary love story, but also surpassed our fundraising target. This event, in fact, was the first structured fundraising activity of our Association. Following such successful fundraising, we are now planning for our charitable activities for the coming future. A number of initiatives are organizing by our Social Enterprise & Services (“SE&S”) Committee. Other than the Women In Science & Engineering (“WISE”) Scholarship to the HKUST, we shall donate another scholarship to the Academy for Performing Arts to promote Chinese Traditional Theatre Programme. For the “N-No” Family Development Project, (in collaboration with the HK Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (“HKSKH”)), the Association has been “sponsor & partner” since April 2013 by subscribing HK$350,000 to look after 10 “N-No” families for two years and at the same time having two HKWPEA members as mentors to each of the 10 “N-NO” families for 2 years. We had an interim review of this Project and on 24 Feb 2014 invited two “N-No” families to attend our members’ dinner in which these two families shared their experience on how our Mentorship Program has improved the quality of their family living. We are so encouraged with the positive feedback from the recipient families. Hence we are planning to extending our commitment as “sponsor and partner” for another 10 “N-No” families, making a total of 20 “N-No” families. I am here calling you for your support to enroll yourself or your colleagues of your own company as mentor to this Project. We need 20 additional members and / or friends of members as mentors. Please advise Joanne Wong, convenor to this Project, if you are interested to join as mentors. SE&S is currently organizing a “Life Skills Education Programme for Youngsters” which targets underprivileged youngsters by offering them various Life Soft Skills training, e.g. Image grooming, dining etiquette, presentation skill, and communication skill training and a series company visits for corporate exposure e.g. Cathay City, IKEA, Chinese Cuisine Training Institute of VTC and China CITIC Bank International etc. This programme has attracted overwhelmingly demand for such services from HKSKH as well as other secondary schools for their needy students. Salome See is spearheading this programme. Please contact Salome if you would like to render help to this programme. Our Association will have another important milestone this year. We are currently organizing the 6th Outstanding Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Award 2014. The Award will honour and recognize up to 6 outstanding women (professionals and entrepreneurs) who are outstanding in their professional excellence, integrity & ethics, community services or entrepreneurial spirit. Further details are provided in this Newsletter. Please mark your diary to join the Award Presentation dinner on 5 Sept 2014 at JW Marriott Hotel. Though the 梁祝 story has been a most well–known traditional story for many types of stage performances, it was for the first time in Hong Kong that we created「梁祝 ˙ 十藝」 The Butterfly Lovers Remix program was first of its kind which encompasses 10 oriental, western, ancient and contemporary performing and visual arts. The audience really felt that the show was unique and spectacular. We had full support from our members and friends, and raised over HK$2 million for our charitable foundation where our Association will certainly put to good use in charitable projects in the future. Thanks go to the Organizing Committee and every member who helped as well as donated generously. In particular, thanks to Angel Hon and Sandra Mak, the two co-Chairpersons who had undertaken this most challenging task, mobilizing their own resources to help, raising fund from their business contacts, and finally successfully created this beautiful performance and generated a lot of positive publicity for our Association. Special thanks also go to Augusta Cheung, our most supportive member who generously sponsored HK$250,000. Thank you! We would also like to thank Eva Cheng. With Hong Kong Economic Times, Etnet and Hearst Group being our media sponsors, the event was featured prominently in newspapers, websites and magazines including HKET, Etnet, Elle, SCMP, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazzar and Bazzar Art. Issue 1 - 9 The Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Visit 9 November 2013 On the gorgeous Saturday morning of 9 Nov 2013, 38 members and guests set off to visit the 60 years old, celebrated Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), spreading over 148 hectares of land on the northern slopes and foothills of Hong Kong's highest mountain - Tai Mo Shan. There, we were warmly welcomed by Idy WONG, KFBG’s Head of Sustainable Living and Agriculture and a trained environmental educator. We were bused up the peak of Kwun Yum Shan offering breath-taking, open views of Tai Mo Shan and some of the unbelievable experimental farmlands on terrain. The soothing wind, and the calming environment with the statue of Kwun Yum sitting atop the hill, spoke loudly to serenity and peace. From there, we snaked down the hill, partly on foot along stone steps, to enjoy the deep-set valley with streams, woodlands and vegetable terraces - together with conservation and education facilities. The amazing experience was rendered complete by the“freshest and cleanest”lunch, as Mabel the organizer had dubbed it, laid on for us especially by our friends at the Farm. Everything was home-made if not home-grown – from vegetables picked only at 930am that morning to freshly baked bread with no raising powder but yeast, to unique jams made from herbs, Luo Shen flowers and peanut butter…… not to mention the sweet banana, soft eggs from free-range Huizhou chickens and the one and only preserved, sour turnip. Sorry if I make your mouth water but we had a firsthand experience of low-carbon eating in support of a lower ecological footprint and better health for ourselves. We learned a lot in the short time we had at the Farm and were primed to make changes in our life to be more sustainable in our lifestyle, which will support sustainable development of the world at large. All in all, an unforgettable day with resounding calls for more in the air. HKWPEA and KFBG have been long standing partners in our environmental initiatives. Our successful programme BEEPS in recent years was partly the result of collaboration with KFBG. We shall certainly follow up and organize another outing to KFBG’s cooking classes when their new facility at the to-be-transformed former Police Station in Tai Po is open. Stay tuned.
