GOTHAM CLASSIC: Just in its third year, the Gotham Classic has already made its mark on the college
basketball scene. The Gotham Classic features five teams from across the nation playing four games
apiece. The Showcase Round on December 20 at Madison Square Garden featured a doubleheader
with Richmond meeting Pepperdine in the first game followed by NC State versus then No. 22/20 West
Virginia in the nightcap.
The Spiders and Waves will also host three games as part of the Gotham Classic. Each will face Howard,
IUPUI, and South Alabama. Those three teams will also host a game of their own.
CREDENTIALS: Requests for credentials for games played at home sites of the Gotham Classic must
be made through the host institution’s sports information department. Credential requests for the
Showcase Round at Madison Square Garden must be made through the Gazelle Group at rcella@
gazellegroup.com.

GOTHAM CLASSIC
PUNCH YOUR TICKET: Seven of the 10 teams that competed in the
first two Gotham Classics have gone on to earn postseason bids that
March with five of those teams going to the NCAA Tournament. Last
season, Ohio State, which won the Showcase Game, North Dakota
State, and Delaware each received NCAA tickets. In 2012, Syracuse
and Temple both went to the NCAAs with the Orange advancing to
the Final Four.
HOME SWEET HOME: Although this is only the third Gotham
Classic, Madison Square Garden is like a second home for Gazelle
Group events. For the last 17 years, The World’s Most Famous Arena
has served as host of the Championship Rounds of the 2K Classic
benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. It is only fitting that the Gotham
Classic also be play on the world’s biggest stage.
DID YOU KNOW...: The seven teams in the Gotham Classic and the
Gotham Classic Showcase have combined for 72 Division I NCAA
Tournament appearances. The seven teams have also combined for
43 wins this season.

REMEMBERING NEWTOWN: Prior to the tip of the NC State-West
Virginia game on December 20 at Madison Square Garden, a
moment of silence was observed in commemoration of the two-year
anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in
Newtown, Conn. On December 14, 2012, 26 people, including 20
children, were murdered at the school. In addition to the moment of
silence, ribbons will be placed on the playing court and the names of
the victims will be displayed on the GardenVision scoreboard.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SO FAR
Dec. 13
RICHMOND, Va. - In the opening game of the third annual Gotham
Classic, Richmond withstood a gritty Howard team to earn a 54-41
win at the Robins Center.
Defense was the name of the game for the Spiders, who forced
21 turnovers which resulted in 21 points. Richmond (4-4) also held
the Bison to just .295 (13-of-44) shooting from the field, including
4-of-23 (.174) in the second half.
ShawnDre’ Jones led Richmond with 11 points while Deion
Taylor posted eight points and seven rebounds. James Daniel led
Howard (5-6) and all scorers with 18 points. James Carlton recorded
12 points and six rebounds.
Dec. 15
MALIBU, Calif. - Stacy Davis had 20 points and 10 rebounds and
Pepperdine used a 22-3 second-half run to rally past South Alabama,
78-68.
Davis had his second double-double of the season and the 14th
of his career. The Waves have won the last eight times when Davis
posts a double-double. He also had four assists and two blocked
shots.
Jett Raines and Shawn Olden each had 12 points for Pepperdine
(6-2), while South Alabama (2-5) received 16 points from Dionte
Ferguson, 13 points from Ken Williams, and 12 points from Taishon
Johnson.
South Alabama led 37-36 early in the second half, but Atif then
Russell ignited a 17-0 run with a three-pointer, while Davis had eight
of his points.
All six of Pepperdine’s victories this season have come by
double-digits. The Waves shot 47.5 percent for the game, including
55.2 percent after halftime, while holding South Alabama to 38.3
percent shooting.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - James Daniel scored 18 points and Howard held
IUPUI to 15-53 (.283) shooting from the field to capture a 57-47 win.
Daniel was joined in double-figures by James Carlton, who
tallied 17 points. Marcel Boyd went scoreless but hauled down 13
rebounds for the Bison (6-6).
IUPUI (2-8) received nine points from Leo Svete and eight points
and seven rebounds from Marcellus Barksdale.
Dec. 17
MALIBU, Calif. - Stacy Davis scored 18 points and hauled down 11
rebounds to lead Pepperdine to a 53-45 win over Howard in the
Gotham Classic.
Up 42-40 with 6:17 to play, Pepperdine (7-2) outscored the Bison
11-5 down the stretch to earn its second Gotham Classic victory in as
many outings.
In addition to Davis, Amadi Udenyi also reached double figures
for the Waves with 16 points to go along with six assists.
Howard (6-7) was paced by James Daniel and his game-best 22
points as well as his five assists. James Carlton posted 13 points and
11 rebounds.
Dec. 18
RICHMOND, Va. - Four players scored in double-figures to help lead
Richmond to a 65-54 win over South Alabama at the Robins Center.
Kendall Anthony scored a game-high 18 points junior Terry Allen
added 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Spiders. T.J. Cline
had 10 points and eight boards and ShawnDre Jones chipped in 14 points
off the bench.
Richmond (5-4) led for over 34 minutes in the game and forced 14
Jaguar turnovers, seven coming off Spider steals. Richmond converted
those turnovers into 15 points.
South Alabama (2-6) was led by Dionte Ferguson, Taishaun Johnson,
and Ken Williams, each of whom scored nine points. Ferguson added
seven rebounds.
Dec. 20
NEW YORK, N.Y. - No. 22/20 West Virginia and Richmond emerged
victorious in the Gotham Classic Showcase Round at Madison Square
Garden.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Richmond came away with
a 65-63 win over Pepperdine in a game that featured 12 lead changes
and four ties. The Spiders were led by T.J. Cline, who garnered Most
Outstanding Player laurels for posting 13 points and five rebounds. Trey
Davis and Terry Allen also scored in double digits with 11 points each.
Richmond (6-4) shot 23-of-42 (.548) from the field while the Waves
were 21-of-42 (.500).
Pepperdine (7-3) received 13 points from Shawn Olden, 12 points
from Jeremy Major, and 11 points from Stacy Davis.
In the nightcap, Juwan Staten scored 24 points and handed out six
assists to lead No. 22/20 West Virginia to an 83-69 win over NC State.
Staten, the game’s Most Outstanding Player, was 10-of-17 from the
field, pacing the Mountaineers who were 31-of-58 (.534) from the floor
and 7-of-13 (.538) from three.
Devin Williams had 16 points and eight rebounds and JaySean Paige
added 11 points for West Virginia (10-1).
NC State (9-3) received 24 points from Trevor Lacey and 16 points
from Cat Barber. The Wolfpack, like the Mountaineers, shot well from the
field, hitting on 20-of-36 (.556) of their shots from the field and 8-of-14
(.571) from three.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - IUPUI earned a win in thrilling fashion, staving off
South Alabama, 71-65, in overtime.
DavRon Williams scored four of his team-high 13 points in the extra
session and Mason Archie II added 12 points. Marcellus Barksdale rounded
out the Jaguars’ double-digit scorers with 10 points, seven rebounds, four
assists, and four steals as the Jags (3-8) stopped a six-game losing skid.
Ken Williams led three South Alabama (2-7) players in double-digits
with a game-high 23 points. Taishaun Johnson, playing in his hometown
of Indianapolis, finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists while
Barrington Stevens tallied 10 points.

The Wolfpack are 9-3 after falling in the Gotham
Classic Showcase Round...NC State has wins over two
Top 30 RPI teams this season (Boise State, Richmond)
as well as Tennessee...posted a 22-14 record en route to a third
straight NCAA Tournament bid last season...eight players, including
four of the top five scorers from a year ago, return, led by Trevor
Lacey and Ralston Turner...head coach Mark Gottfried is just the third
coach in league history to take his first three teams to the NCAA
Tournament...NC State has been to the NCAAs 25 times, including
three Final Fours, and has won two National Championships.
West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 18 / No. 17)

The No. 18/17 Mountaineers are 10-1 with wins over
NC State in the Gotham Classic Showcase Round, as well
as Boston College and defending national champion
Connecticut on their resume...last year WVU won 17
games and earned a berth in the NIT...that marked WVU’s 10th
postseason appearance in the last 11 years, including seven NCAA
bids and a trip to the 2010 Final Four...West Virginia returns nine
players and four starters, headlined by first-team All-Big 12 honoree
Juwan Staten and Jonathan Holton...head coach Bob Huggins has
won 749 games in his career and has taken WVU and Cincinnati
to the Final Four...West Virginia has made 25 NCAA Tournament
appearances, twice going to the Final Four.

The Spiders are 6-4 after their win in the Gotham Classic
Showcase Round...last season marked the fifth time in six
years UR won at least 19 games in posting a 19-14 mark...this season
11 players, including four starters, return, led by second-team AllAtlantic 10 selection Kendall Anthony (14.4 ppg) and Terry Allen
(11.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg)...head coach Chris Mooney, who ranks third
all-time at Richmond in wins, has led the Spiders to the second-most
league wins of any current A-10 team over the last seven seasons...
Richmond has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances.
Pepperdine Waves

The Waves are 7-3, including wins over Fresno State
and San Jose State...head coach Marty Wilson
welcomes back eight players and three starters from a
team that recorded 15 victories last season - the most since the 200405 season...in fact, the Waves have increased their win total each of
the last three seasons with Wilson at the helm...leading the Waves is
Stacy Davis, a first-team All-WCC selection who is averaging 16.2 ppg
and 8.6 rpg this season...Jett Raines is averaging 11.0 ppg and 6.3
rpg...Pepperdine has been to 13 NCAA Tournaments.

The Bison are 6-7 with the second-most wins
in the MEAC this season...head coach Kevin
Nickelberry’s reputation as a strong recruiter has
proved true as he rebuilds the Bison...guard James Daniel (16.4 ppg, 25
assists, 28 steals) is the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Year...four of the five
starters return, along with highly-touted transfer James “JC” Carlton (11.5
ppg, 7.8 rpg).
IUPUI Jaguars
Head Coach: Jason Gardner
Summit League
The Jaguars are under the direction of first-year
head coach Jason Gardner, who comes to IUPUI
after a season as an assistant at Memphis...Gardner inherits a team that
returns seven letterwinners, paced by Marcellus Barkdale (9.6 ppg, 25
assists, 26 steals) and Mason Archie (8.2 ppg)...the Jags are playing in the
renovated Fairgrounds Coliseum this season, which just underwent a
22-month, $63 million make-over...IUPUI is 3-8 this year.
South Alabama Jaguars
Head Coach: Matthew Graves
Sun Belt Conference
Six players, including a pair of starters, return for
second-year head coach Matthew Graves...South
Alabama, which posted 11 wins a year ago, is led by Ken
Williams (12.7 ppg, 20 assists) and Taishaun Johnson (11.6 ppg, 21 assists,
11 steals)...the Jaguars are 2-7 on the year.

A BRIEF HISTORY
2013- Lenzelle Smith, Jr. scored seven of his nine points in the final 33
seconds as No. 2 Ohio State rallied from an eight-point deficit with 58
seconds to play to beat Notre Dame, 64-61. The Buckeyes closed the game
on a 14-3 run and Smith was the key to the closing spurt.
LaQuinton Ross led the Buckeyes with 16 points and 11 rebounds to
garner most outstanding player honors.
2012- In the inaugural Gotham Classic, Khalif Wyatt scored a career-high
33 points in leading Temple to an 83-79 victory over No. 3 Syracuse. The
win marked the fifth straight season Temple had beaten a top 10 team
while being unranked themselves. C.J. Fair had a career-high 25 points for
Syracuse, which saw its 52-game regular season non-conference winning
streak snapped.

The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) returns for its eighth tournament next spring. The tournament, comprised
of teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament, is a single-elimination tournament until the championship
series, which is a best-of-three series. All tournament games are played at on-campus sites to allow each school’s fan
base to cheer on their team to a championship.
