Been here and enjoyed
your visit? Tell a friend.
Learned something
new at a behind-thescenes tour, program
or from a docent?
Tell a friend.
Contributed as a member, donor or
shopper? Share that good feeling by
inviting friends to join, make a donation
or find great buys at the Museum Store
(or all three!).
Been fascinated by a story you heard here,
or by how a youngster responded to one of
our displays? Sponsor a school or religious
group, or your club or organization, on
a docent-led tour on any one of a dozen
topics - or invite our Speaker’s Bureau to
come to your meeting.
Not a week goes by without news about
the Museum on television, radio, in the
paper or on the web, yet visitors still tell
us their #1 reason for that first trip is
they heard raves from a friend. Bring us
together with the people you know - today,
before it sinks to the bottom of the to-do
list. They’ll appreciate it, and so will we.
Lois Davis and Tamar Maltz [below]

Pat Friedman, Eileen Hoicowitz,
Mort Hoicowitz, Jean Dreifort,
Rose Meyeroff and Ernie Myeroff.
In its inaugural outing, the Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! Essay Contest took
the region by storm. With 1,200 essays submitted from a seven county region
(Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Summit, Medina, Lorain and Portage), the contest
made an impact on thousands of students and their teachers and parents.
Entrants pondered questions of discrimination and hate, thought about actions
to combat them, participated in classroom discussions on intolerance and visited
the Museum to learn about what can happen when hate is left unchecked.
The contest has begun its second year with meetings throughout
the summer with school superintendents and principals;
we expect thousands more to participate this year. Once again,
we will award up to $100,000 in scholarships and prizes!
Teachers: submit an online request to have someone speak at your
school, schedule a Museum visit for your class, obtain materials or
ask questions. Students, read last year’s winning entries online to
inspire you as you begin your own entry this year.
Interested in learning more? Visit www.maltzmuseum.org for
complete contest guidelines and entry information.

Cleveland’s landmark Cultural Gardens were conceived as a means
of fostering peace among nations in the aftermath of World War I,
but they reflect a broader story of the changing nature of cities
and community identity in the twentieth century. dr. Mark Tebeau,
Associate Professor of History at CSU presents an illustrated story
of hope and despair, joy and sadness, conflict and cooperation,

Shopkeepers, laborers, entrepreneurs and reformers, immigrants
all, forged the American identity through hard work, patriotism,
and sheer determination. Urban historian dr. John J. Grabowski,
Director of Research at Western Reserve Historical Society, presents
a fascinating glimpse of how ethnic groups settled in Cleveland, the
barriers they overcame and how their contribution to the growth and
character of our city is still evident today.

A visitor to Jerusalem is immediately struck by
the variety of people who throng the narrow
passageways of the old city, almost all of whom sport
headgear of varying shapes, sizes and textures. This playful film shows
us that hats serve as an identity card, a way of declaring membership
in a community, and a religious or political statement often reflecting
centuries of tradition. Peter haas, Director of the Rosenthal Center
for Judaic Studies at CASE leads a post-viewing discussion.
