HISTORY OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS COMPETITION
1968:
Canada is represented by a Floor Hockey Team from Toronto at the first International Special Olympics
Games held at Soldiers Field in Chicago. Canada becomes the first nation, outside of the United States,
to participate in Special Olympics.
1969:
The first Canadian Special Olympics Games and NHL Floor Hockey Tournament are held in Toronto.
1970:
Canada is represented by a Floor Hockey Team from Orillia, Ontario at the second International Special
Olympics Games held in Chicago, Illinois.
1971:
The second Canadian Special Olympics Games and NHL Floor Hockey Tournament are held in Toronto.
1974:
The first Ontario Invitational Floor Hockey Tournament is held at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto.
1975:
Canada was represented by 138 Special Olympians at the fourth International Special Olympics Games
which were held in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
1976:
Development of the Ontario Floor Hockey League with Ontario Government support through a Wintario
Grant.
1977:
Over 500 athletes participate in the Ontario Floor Hockey League’s first Provincial Tournament held in
Etobicoke.
1978:
The second annual Ontario floor Hockey League Championships are held at Toronto’s Maple Leaf
Gardens with over 600 athletes.
1979:
The first Ontario Special Olympics Summer Games are held in Etobicoke. 440 athletes participate.
The Third Annual Ontario Special Olympics Floor Hockey League Championships is held with 38 teams
competing.
International Special Olympics Summer Games held in Brockport, New York.
1980:
Palmerston hosts the 4th Annual Ontario Floor Hockey League Championships for 18 teams.
The Second Annual Ontario Special Olympics Summer Games are at York University for 440 athletes.
1981:
Canadian Special Olympics Summer Games are held in Ottawa. 500 athletes and 136 coaches
participate. Prior to the Games, the first NHL Floor Hockey Training Camp is held in Toronto.
Timmins hosts the 5th Annual Ontario Floor Hockey League Championship for 13 teams. This was the
first Games held in Northern Ontario.
120 bowlers attend the Ontario Special Olympics Bowling Championships in Toronto.
The World Winter Games are held in Stowe, Vermont.
1982:
Guelph hosts the Ontario Special Olympics Swimming Championship with 120 athletes.
220 Track & Field athletes attend Ontario Championships in Toronto.
North Bay hosts 120 athletes at the Ontario Bowling Championships.
1983:
Smiths Falls hosts the 1st Annual Ontario Special Olympics Winter Games with 120 athletes.
Sixth Annual Ontario Floor Hockey League Championships held in Thunder Bay.
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 1st Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
International Summer Games held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
1984:
Canadian Special Olympics hosts the Internationals NHL Floor Hockey Tournament as part of Toronto’s
Sesquicentennial Celebrations. Over 400 intellectually disabled athletes participate. All NHL Hockey
League teams are represented.
Ontario Special Olympics Swim Championships held in Barrie, 140 athletes compete.
Windsor hosts the Ontario Track & Field Championships for 220 athletes.
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 2nd Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
1985:
Ontario Floor Hockey League Championships held in Kitchener-Waterloo with 375 athletes.
Ontario Special Olympics Swimming Championships held in Scarborough, 140 athletes compete.
Ontario Special Olympics Track & Field Championships held in Burlington, 220 athletes compete.
Ontario Special Olympics Bowling Championships held in Windsor, 120 athletes compete.
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 3rd Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
World Winter Games are held in Park City, Utah.
1986:
London hosts Ontario Floor Hockey League Championships, 290 athletes compete.
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 4th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
National Summer Games are hosted by Calgary, Alberta.
1987:
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 5th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
World Summer Games were held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
1988:
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 6th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
The first Canadian Special Olympics Winter Games are held in Edmundston, New Brunswick.
Approximately 300 athletes and coaches attend.
1989:
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 7th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
World Winter Games were held in Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
1990:
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 8th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
National Summer Games hosted by Vancouver, British Columbia.
1991
Ontario special Olympics Winter Games held in Windsor and North Bay, Ontario.
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 9th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Summer Games held in Ottawa, Ontario.
Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1992
Ridgetown Kiwanis host 10th Annual Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.
Ontario special Olympics Floor Hockey held in Markham, Ontario.
Law Enforcement Torch Run Sports Day held in Barrie, Ontario.
Special Olympics Ontario Softball Championships held in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.
National Winter Games held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
