Director's Message
This report to our members summarizes the activities of Telfair Museums over the 2009 calendar
year. Throughout this publication, you will see the
many programs, exhibitions, and events presented
over the past year at Telfair Museums’ three sites—
the Jepson Center, the Telfair Academy, and the
Owens-Thomas House. 2009 was marked by unforeseen financial setbacks, yet it was also a groundbreaking year for the Telfair, with unprecedented
successes in exhibitions and programming.

ACQUISITIONS
As a result of the national and global economic
recession, the Telfair faced significant challenges
to the museum’s finances, staff, and programming
during the past year. realizing that our proposed
$5.8 million budget for 2009 (down from $6.3
million in 2008) was imperiled, we entered into a
serious downsizing effort and ultimately reduced
the budget to $5.3 million through savings in operations and an across-the-board salary reduction
of 5-10%. This quick action guided the museum
through the remainder of the year and enabled us
to come within 1% of achieving our goal.
Despite the tenuous economic climate, we continued to provide strong, dynamic programs
throughout 2009, operating in a lean yet efficient
manner. Our exhibition program exemplified our
capacity to mount stimulating and demanding
shows of national and international significance.
The year began with beautiful exhibitions of the
works of George bellows (drawings from the boston Public Library), robert Colescott (his last solo
show prior to his death last year), and Elizabeth
King (detailed, sculptural self-portraits and automata), all in the Jepson Center. At the Telfair Academy, the museum mounted a small reinstallation of
the Kahlil Gibran collection, followed by a display
of nineteenth-century gaming tables. The summer
months showcased a major new installation project commissioned by the museum and exhibited
at the Academy—Jerome Meadows' Reframing a
Perceptual Paradigm. This project gave the artist
total access to our collections to use along with his
own work, as material for his reinterpretation of the
Telfair collection. In May, the museum presented
Constructs and Inventions (etchings by Eric
Desmazières) to much acclaim at the Jepson Center. Also at the Jepson, we featured two major
photography shows, Counter Photography (from
Japan) and Persian Visions (from Iran), along with
a memorial exhibition on the photographer Helen
Levitt. The remainder of the exhibition year was
consumed by the major exhibition Dutch Utopia
at the Jepson (and a related exhibition of Walter
MacEwen’s work at the Academy). Organized by
the Telfair, the internationally-travelling Dutch Utopia raised the bar dramatically for the museum in
terms of complexity of project, quality of production, installation, and the exhibition catalogue, as
well as local, national, and international recognition. A significant highlight of the year, it was one
of our most successful and ambitious accomplishments to date.
Our education department demonstrated excellent
initiative and creativity in providing fun and engaging educational experiences for all segments of our
community—from toddlers to seniors. We continued with traditional offerings such as school tours,
quarterly Family Days, monthly Toddler Third Thursdays and First Saturdays for Kids, studio classes,
workshops, and summer camps, as well as recentlyinitiated programs including the first Pulse: Art and
Technology Festival in January and the second annual Juneteenth Festival in the summer. Examples
of the Telfair’s ongoing commitment to providing
socially and culturally diverse programming, both
festivals will continue to expand in the future.
As we enter into 2010, the Telfair is in an excellent
position, both financially and programmatically, to
capitalize on the hard work and accomplishments
of the past year, in anticipation of even greater successes to come. It is largely due to the loyalty of
our members that we are able to maintain the high
caliber and nationally prominent exhibitions and
programs that our community has come to expect
of the Telfair. recognizing that many of you were
personally impacted by the economic downturn
in 2009, we are especially grateful to those members who made additional sacrifices, digging even
deeper into your pockets to help sustain the museum during this challenging time. Your generosity
has truly made a difference, and we greatly appreciate your continued support.

Marketing and
Public Relations
In addition to publicizing museum news in both
local and national arenas, securing media coverage,
and establishing community partnerships, the
Telfair’s marketing and public relations department
produced a variety of digital, print, and internet-based
publications in 2009. Among these were three issues of
Telfair magazine, monthly e-newsletters, membership
and member group brochures, and general museum
publications, as well as collateral materials for
exhibitions, related programs, special events, and
educational offerings. Publication highlights include
the book The Owens-Thomas House, written by Telfair
curator Tania Sammons, and an illustrated brochure
on the Desmaziéres exhibition with text provided by
associate curator Courtney McGowan.
To conserve both financial and environmental
resources, the marketing department implemented
a “green initiative” in 2009 through a series of earthfriendly steps. These included replacing many formerly
printed materials with electronic communications such
as e-vites and e-blasts, and adopting the use of Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper whenever
possible.
Listed below are highlights of the marketing and public relations department’s 2009 awards and activities.

Exhibitions
2009 was a banner year for exhibitions at the Telfair. The museum
mounted a total of 16 exhibitions between the Jepson and the
Academy buildings, consisting of seven shows organized by the
Telfair, four exhibits borrowed from other institutions, and five
changing displays of the permanent collection.
Highlights from the year included Elizabeth King: The Sizes of Things
in the Mind’s Eye, featuring striking and innovative sculptures and
photographs by this pioneering artist; Robert Colescott: Troubled
Goods, the last major exhibit of this groundbreaking painter’s work
prior to his death in June 2009; Gaming Tables for Whist, Chess, and
Other Amusements, presenting rarely-seen, extraordinary pieces of
nineteenth-century furniture from the Telfair and local collections;
Reframing a Perceptual Paradigm: A Jerome Meadows Installation,
the first artist-curated display and reinterpretation of the Telfair’s collection; Constructs and Inventions: The Etchings of Erik Desmazières,
the first museum exhibition of work by this internationally-respected
contemporary French printmaker; and Helen Levitt: A Photographer’s
Legacy, a celebration of the career of the late esteemed photographer, presenting the Telfair’s fine holdings of her work.
The year ended on a particularly high note with Dutch Utopia:
American Artists in Holland, 1880-1914, presenting over 70 works
drawn from public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
The first Telfair-organized exhibition to travel internationally, Dutch
Utopia was accompanied by a major publication featuring new
scholarship on this facet of American art. The exhibition attracted
a broad audience to the museum—drawing over 600 people for
the opening, and closing as the best-attended show in the Telfair’s
history, with a total of 25,527 visitors.

Acquisitions
In 2009, Telfair Museums acquired 145 works in a diverse range of media—including paintings, drawings, photographs,
prints, sculpture, and mixed-media works. The majority of these objects were generously donated from two sources: the
estate of the late Telfair supporter ronald J. Strahan and the collection of Arthur bennett Kouwenhoven Jr. In addition to
strong works by nationally-recognized artists, both the Strahan estate and Arthur Kouwenhoven presented the museum with
a fine survey of art representing some of Savannah’s artistic legends, such as Christopher A.D. Murphy and Paul Stone, as
well as a wealth of works by contemporary artists living or working in this city. Other notable additions include a Philip Perkis
photograph donated by Mrs. robert O. Levitt and four sculptures created by major figures in contemporary studio glass,
donated by Moses Luski. The museum also acquired works by nationally-recognized painter Henry Lee McFee and local selftaught artist William O. Golding, both of whom worked in Savannah in the 1930s.

Special Events
The Telfair hosts five major fundraisers each year: the Telfair Ball, The Artful Table, An Evening in Monte Carlo, the
Telfair Art Fair, and The Art of Great Fashion. In addition to generating revenue for museum operations, exhibitions, and
programming, these events help to raise the Telfair’s public profile within the community. Telfair special events are made
possible through the generosity and support of the museum’s members, sponsors, volunteers, and guests.
Telfair Ball and Bash
The museum’s largest annual fundraiser, the Telfair Ball
features a unique theme each year. 2009’s “The Tao of
Telfair,” chaired by Tiffany Considine, celebrated Eastern
culture and traditions. Held on February 28, the event
transformed the Jepson Center’s Eckburg Atrium, the
Telfair Academy, and Telfair Square into an exotic setting
inspired by an Asian aesthetic. Director’s Circle members
enjoyed an elegant dinner and a live auction before joining
other museum members participating in the Bash for
dancing and celebration.
An Evening in Monte Carlo
The William Jay Society, the museum’s young
professionals’ member group, presents this popular
fundraiser each year, transporting guests back to the
days of old-style casino gaming. The 2009 event—
organized by co-chairs Rebecca Haas and Amanda Zedd
Reeves—was held on August 8 in the Telfair Academy's
Rotunda and Sculpture Gallery. Dressed in black-tie and
white-tie attire, guests had an opportunity to test their
gambling skills and participate in a silent auction while
enjoying fine food and drink. Proceeds from the event
were applied toward art acquisition at the Telfair.

SPECIAL EVENTS
The Artful Table
Each spring, the Telfair Academy Guild (TAG), the
museum's largest member group, hosts this one-of-akind event featuring a preview party, a presentation by a
notable guest speaker, a luncheon, and intriguing table
vignettes created by local designers and decorators.
Celebrating the museum’s major exhibition Dutch Utopia:
American Artists in Holland, 1880-1914, The Artful Table:
Going Dutch took place from March 12-15, 2009, at the
Telfair Academy, the Jepson Center, and Savannah Theatre.
The fundraiser was co-chaired by Peggy Wise, Carolyn
Neely, and Linda McWhorter.
The Telfair Art Fair is one of Savannah’s most anticipated
fall events. Free and open to the public, this juried art
show and sale is both a fundraiser and a “friend-raiser”
for Telfair Museums. The family event is held each
November under a large, lighted tent adjacent to historic
Telfair Square. Showcasing a variety of original art in a
broad range of prices, styles, and media, it also includes
children’s activities, live music, and entertainment for
all ages. In 2009, the Art Fair took place on November
14 and 15, featuring works by more than 70 artists from
throughout the country as well as an array of children’s
activities and art stations in Telfair Square focusing on a
recycling theme. The Arty Party, a chic cocktail reception
and preview party for members, kicked-off the Art Fair
weekend on November 13. The event was chaired by
Helen Johnson.
The Art of Great Fashion
The Telfair Academy Guild hosts this annual fashion event
each fall. The Art of Great Fashion: Return to Hollywood
Glamour—held on October 19, 2009—featured the
latest styles by distinguished designer James Hogan.
Set in the Telfair Academy against a backdrop of the
museum’s permanent collection, the runway-style show
debuted Hogan’s fall collection and was followed by a
seated luncheon in the Jepson Center. The Art of Great
Fashion was organized by event chair Jackie Sirlin.
Member Groups
The Telfair offers its members a variety of additional
opportunities to enjoy and support the museum through
five special interest member groups: Friends of African
American Arts (FAAA), Friends of the Owens-Thomas
House (FOT), the Gari Melchers Collectors’ Society,
Telfair Academy Guild (TAG)/Women in Business in TAG
(WIBITAG), and the William Jay Society (WJS).

Rentals
Not only was the Owens-Thomas House rented out for filming of the Robert Redford-directed movie
The Conspirator, but the Jepson Center and the Telfair Academy hosted numerous weddings and events in
2009. The Knot magazine named the Telfair a “Best Museum Weddings” site and featured a 2009 wedding held
at the Jepson Center in its “Best of Georgia” issue.
