Welcome to Loreto College
Loreto College is committed to enabling you to develop
academically, spiritually and personally in your education
after high school. Our prospectus aims to guide you through
the options so that in the important transition to advanced
level study you find the right college and course for you.
Why do I think that you should study at Loreto?
Tradition: In joining our college in September 2015, you will
become part of a long established academic community.
Though our buildings and facilities are modern and up-to-date,
we have been educating generations of Manchester students
since 1851. Not only that, you will become part of a worldwide
Loreto community, a member of an international network of
schools and colleges spanning the globe. Loreto students join
a community widely recognised for its excellence. Loreto has
the rare distinction of being a Queen’s Anniversary Prize
winner which I received on behalf of the college at
Buckingham Palace. Loreto has Beacon and Leading Edge
Status, is recognised as outstanding in league table positions and
year-on-year academic results
Support: As a Loreto student, you will receive outstanding
support, whether aspiring to an Oxbridge place or resitting a
GCSE course. Our Hall based tutor system provides a solid
network of information, advice and guidance at every level ably
assisted by our support staff, counsellors and career service.
Success: In becoming a Loreto student, you will be joining
a highly successful, high achieving academic community.
Our most recent Ofsted inspection stated that we were:
“Outstanding in every respect”. Her Majesty’s Inspectors
recognised that: ‘The College is imbued at every level with
a culture of high aspirations and expectations’ [Ofsted].
Loreto’s excellence has been recognised in its designation as
a National Teaching School by the Department for Education.
Facilities: Come and look at us; you will agree that the facilities are excellent. They include three student cafeterias, IT access in all classrooms for student use, a multi-media learning
resource centre and a new sports centre. Ellis and Kennedy is
a £20M performing arts building, housing its own music
recording studios, editing suites, media production space,
television studio, in-house cinema, dance studio, industry
standard theatre and drop-in Apple Mac IT Suite.
Our latest teaching block, St. Joseph’s, opened in
September 2014.
Enrichment: Loreto’s enrichment programme will enable
you to widen your college experience with a wide range of
activities. Join one of our immensely successful competitive
sports teams or just play for fun. Our choirs and music
ensembles perform through the year. The annual
college musical before Christmas and the summer play, in
addition to numerous other opportunities, really showcase
our students’ talents.
With all this in mind, I warmly invite you to explore Loreto
College yourself. Make good use of the Open Days to visit
our green and leafy campus. Check out our new buildings
and superb facilities. Spot the subtle integration of some of
the old buildings into the new. But more than this: look at
departments, talk to staff and students, ask questions – get
a feel for the college first hand. We will be happy to
welcome you and guide you to success.

Loreto Extra
Potential High Achievers
As a student at Loreto we support your next steps to university or
onto the career ladder. Loreto offers an “Excellence Unit” which
prepares students for the distinctive demands of Oxford and Cambridge
(Oxbridge) and other “research intensive” Russell Group universities.
Oxbridge Programme
Cambridge Music Hub
■ The college runs a programme for potential
Oxbridge students. The programme develops
students’ debating and thinking skills, while
providing insight into and knowledge of the
application process. It includes presentations
from university staff, a competitive university
conference and a number of practice interviews.
■ Loreto College is one of only two music
hubs nationally. Cambridge University is
working with Loreto College to provide support
for high achieving Year 12 Music students so
that they are better informed about the
academic options open to them.
■ Our in-house team of specialist teachers
have years of experience in successfully guiding
applicants.
■ Academics from both universities regularly
visit Loreto and deliver a range of sessions
including subject specific classes and application
seminars. They aim to make sure that the
students are appropriate for the demands of
Oxford and Cambridge and would thrive in the
demanding environment.
■ The well regarded programme is delivered
by Loreto staff with additional workshops from
visiting Cambridge academics. A Cambridge
residential allows students to experience the
extensive musical resources of the university
at first hand and meet undergraduates
studying music.
Emma Cullen
Emma, a former pupil at Sale High School, left
Loreto in 2012 and read History at St Catharine’s
College, Cambridge. As well as adapting to the
academic demands of her course, Emma has
been able to take advantage of the sporting
opportunities on offer. Not only was she a
member of the college women’s rugby team
(which won the intercollege Cuppers
competition), she has also rowed for her college.
Her main love is athletics and she represented
the university as a sprinter. As well as
competing against other UK universities, she has
represented Cambridge in the USA against the
top US university teams. She has also broken the
university’s 60m individual sprint record. After
enjoying a training camp in Tenerife, Emma
earned a full blue, the highest honour that can
be bestowed on a Cambridge sportsman or
woman, by winning the ladies' 100m sprint
and being a member of the 4 x 100m relay race.
■ This year 40% of our supported applicants
gained an offer; nationally the rate is
approximately 20%. This is a real credit to the
students’ ability, hard work and the dedicated
support given by Loreto.
■ There are currently 44 students from Loreto
holding places at Oxford and Cambridge,
studying a wide range of courses from Medicine
to Mathematics to Music, from English to
Economics to Engineering and from French
to Fine Art.
Cambridge HE+
Manchester Access Programme
■ Loreto has been selected by Cambridge
University to act as a North West hub for the
Cambridge HE+ programme.
■ Students are successful every year in
applying for Manchester University’s project
which helps the students to develop the skills
necessary for Higher Education. A bursary is
available for students who succeed in winning
a place on the MAP project.
■ The Cambridge HE+ programme engages
potential applicants in Year 12, by offering
stretch and challenge activities outside the
specification to prepare them for study at elite
universities. The programme includes extension
classes at college and in other Cambridge
HE+ centres; a Cambridge residential which
includes subject specific master classes from
university staff, general presentations on
applications, interviews and life at the university.
Oxford and Cambridge Extras
■ Loreto students have continued success in
achieving places on the Cambridge Shadowing
Scheme, the Sutton Trust Summer Schools and
Oxford University’s UNIQ summer schools.
Page 8
Overseas Applications
■ Loreto provides dedicated one-on-one
support to the growing number of students
applying to study overseas, including
universities in the USA, Japan and Europe.
Medics, Dentists and Vets
■ Medical, Dentistry and Veterinary degrees
are some of the most challenging courses on
which to gain places. Loreto’s dedicated medic,
dentist and vet group supports students in
applying to these courses through a series of
lectures, workshops and practice interviews.
Joshua Clarke
Joshua, a former pupil at St Anthony’s, also left
Loreto in 2012 and is now reading Computer
Science at St Anne’s College, Oxford. As well as
being academically successful on his course,
which has a very mathematical approach to
computing, Joshua has been active in promoting
his college, the university and the course in
widening participation activities. In summer
2014 Joshua secured a highly prestigious, paid
12 week internship at Facebook in California!
Josh did so well that he returned to Facebook
this summer to complete another internship.

Science students at
Loreto are challenged
to explore science
outside the standard
curriculum, to further
their understanding of
what the future holds
for scientific discoveries,
and, by exploring
many different career
opportunities, to look
at how they can
contribute to this future.
A Focus
on Science
at Loreto…
Students benefit from
unrivalled facilities and
equipment across the Science
Faculty, which boasts
13 state-of-the-art
laboratories, with specialist
technologies in each
science discipline.
Page 10
Of particular note is the cutting edge DNA technology,
including a PCR machine used to amplify DNA, as
carried out in a forensic laboratory. The Physics
department utilises advanced data loggers linked to a
number of sensors including force, light gates and
radioactivity detectors to enrich practical sessions.
Science students are given the opportunity to attend
a large number of specialist lectures, both in college
from visiting experts, and outside of college. These
take place every year, enhancing the curriculum and
inspiring the students. This year Professor Tara Shears
of the University of Liverpool delivered a fascinating
talk on CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its
contribution to our current understanding of particle
physics. Dr Frank Mair of the University of Salford
delivered a memorable lecture ranging from
cutting-edge Manchester based research into
hydrogen-storage materials and graphene synthesis
to the more ‘explosive’ aspects of chemistry!

environmental factors affecting gene expression
in chicken embryos. Physics teacher and Ogden
Teaching Fellow Dr Yasmin Andrew presented her
recent work ‘Plasma Physics in Post-16 Education’
which involved a collaboration with Salford

Progression
Many science students aspire to study Medicine,
Dentistry or Veterinary Science. The process of
gaining acceptance onto one of these degrees is
highly competitive. Students need to achieve very
high A-level grades, perform well at interview and
show their commitment by gaining large amounts
of work experience. Loreto provides a highly
specialised program of support to students
planning to apply for these courses.
Expert professionals from appropriate fields discuss
their day to day work, researchers explain the very
latest, cutting edge advances, and undergraduates
relate their experiences of the realities of studying
at university. During the year students in the
medical group attend mock interviews and practise
assessment activities identical to those that they will
be required to do during the actual interview process.
Iceland, Transylvania, CERN in Geneva, Costa Rica,
Honduras and Egypt are just some of the international
destinations that science students have had the
opportunity to visit. Students also regularly take part in
trips within the UK such as visits to the Malham Field
Centre and the London Museum of Natural History.
Students are also given the opportunity to enter
national Olympiads and other prestigious competitions.
Loreto students go on to study a wide range of science
related degrees at Oxbridge and other prestigious
Russell Group universities and there is also a great
deal of specialist support in place for those interested
in entering a vocational career such as Medicine,
Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy or Engineering.
Throughout their time at college Loreto science
students have the opportunity to reach their
highest potential.
All the support, and the students’ hard work,
certainly pays off. In the last two years, 34 Loreto
students gained places on medical degrees at
Russell Group and other leading universities,
14 students have won places to study Dentistry and
one student is now studying Veterinary Science.
Outside the medical fields, Loreto science students
go on to great success in many other areas of
science. In the last two years, 10 Loreto students
have left to study Maths and Science related
degrees at Oxford and Cambridge and over 50
students have gone on to Engineering degrees.
Many more students opt to study pure and
applied sciences at Russell Group universities,
including Imperial College, Manchester and
Birmingham.
An international steering committee chose two
projects from Loreto College to represent the ‘UK
Innovation in Science Teaching’ category in the Science
on Stage Europe Festival Queen Mary’s University,
London. This provides a European platform for the
most creative and innovative talents in primary and

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Many of our students come to us from high schools
where the Duke of Edinburgh Award operates and
they wish to carry on with the programme; others
have no experience of the project but are keen to
get involved. Loreto’s Duke of Edinburgh Award
programme can cater for both groups.
Page 20
We currently have over 150 students working towards
the various levels of the award. Gold award students
attended their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Presentation
at St James’ Palace. They had the opportunity to
meet Prince Edward who spoke personally to each
award holder about their DofE experience. They were
presented their awards by Ade Adepitan, the former
GB wheelchair basketball player and Paralympic
presenter. The day was a great occasion to highlight
the determination and effort of all the students
involved.
Students participating in the DofE programme have
to demonstrate commitment, determination, reliability
and, above all, initiative. They have to take part in a
physical activity, such as swimming, rock climbing,
football, badminton or any other sport and keep an
accurate log. They must choose and develop a skill;
for example playing a musical instrument, cookery,
photography or jewellery making. They volunteer in a
variety of capacities: in schools, playgroups, old
people’s homes, Brownie, Guide, Cub and Scout
groups, even at animal shelters. The students also go
on expeditions up into the hills, where they learn the
skills of navigation and the value of teamwork. The
students on the programme tell us that, although they
might have joined initially with a friend, they very
quickly strike up new relationships with other students
with whom they might not otherwise have come into
contact. It can be a great social experience, as well as
being an award recognised nationally and valued
highly by employers and universities.

Cambridge Chemistry
Challenge
British Physics Olympiad
Experimental Project
A group of Lower 6th students nominated by their
chemistry teachers took part in this year's Cambridge
Chemistry Challenge. The challenge takes the form of
an extremely demanding 90 minute exam designed to
stretch and challenge the brightest students. Themes
for the questions are drawn from areas of cutting
edge research in industry and academia and require
students to use their creative problem solving skills
and powers of logical deduction to solve problems far
beyond what is expected of them at AS level. This
year 40 students took the challenge and 34 achieved
an award. Gold awards went to Lucy Allington,
Jack Briggs, Fergal Hanna and Katie Jones.
Six Loreto College A2 physics students, took part in
the British Physics Olympiad Experimental Project
2014/15. Three of the students were awarded a
Bronze for their submission to the national
competition.
The Chemistry Olympiad
Loreto students volunteered to take part in the
International Chemistry Olympiad and performed
well against the top 4% of A-level Chemistry students
throughout the country. They were faced with hard
problem-solving style questions, which go beyond
their own chemistry syllabus, in a fiendish two hour
examination immediately after their mock exams. This
paper involved complex calculations and a variety of
unfamiliar scenarios which stretched our students to
think impulsively and logically. Lukas Gimberis
achieved an impressive Gold Award, whilst 15 other
students gained Silver or Bronze Awards.
The Experimental Project was developed to support
and encourage practical physics students in schools
and colleges. Participation and completion of this
project represents an outstanding achievement for
the young physicists of Loreto and will stand them in
good stead as they move on to university next year.
Teachers and students from Loreto College have also
successfully published an article in the international
peer reviews journal Physics Education, further
highlighting the excellence of the Physics department
at Loreto.
“Loreto has enriched me
not only academically but
also in social and political
issues,” says former St
Paul's RC High School
pupil, Sacha Chiuta. Sacha
is studying Biology,
Chemistry, English
Literature, Maths and
General Studies. She also
participates in Debate Club
and Medics Club.
Maths Challenge
This has been a very successful year for students
completing the UK Maths Challenge at Loreto. The
challenge is a series of high level and thought
provoking maths questions, designed to test students
in difficult and unexpected ways. Loreto students
received eight Gold awards, 16 Silver and 50 Bronze.
Four students were invited on to compete in further
rounds of the challenge. Well done everyone!
“I have met so many new
people and had some

Loreto Worldwide
When you join Loreto College as a student, you join
a worldwide organisation which has an outstanding
pedagogical tradition, rooted in the key values of
Excellence, Freedom, Internationality, Joy, Justice,
Sincerity and Truth.
Loreto schools are to be found all over the world, from
the cities of Kolkata and Lima, to the remote areas of
Sudan and Ghana. The education offered moves from
three-year-old infants in Australia to university students
in Toronto. Loreto education reaches out beyond
boundaries to include young people of all cultures,
faiths and social class.
Students at Loreto College have the opportunity to
visit different Loreto institutions around the world,
including in Australia, India and Peru. In 2016 you
could be part of a group of students who will travel
to Kolkata in India on a two week visit to Loreto’s
sister school. During the day the students will help
in English lessons and deliver Physical Education
sessions. In the evening they’ll work with the Rainbow
Children, delivering a wide variety of sports sessions.
The Rainbows are the orphans who live on the roof
of the school and, just like a rainbow brings happiness,
so do the children when they appear at the gates.
During the two week visit students will have the
opportunity to see the fantastic work that Loreto
does outside of their schools, such as the Sampuna
Project, where school pupils go out to remote villages
to teach the village children English and Numeracy.
There is also a visit to the Brickfields, where travelling
children are educated for parts of the year. Our
students will also have the opportunity to meet Sister
Cyril, former Principal of Sealdah and advisor to the
Indian government on the
Rainbow Children project.
Viktor Georgiev, a former
pupil at All Hallows RC
High School, is studying
Maths, Economics,
Chemistry, Biology and
General Studies. Viktor,
says: “I’ve enjoyed every
minute of my first year.
Loreto is definitely the
best college in
Manchester!”
Why did you choose Loreto?
“From the many open days I had attended at colleges, Loreto stood
out as the one which would help me achieve what I wanted the
most. This, as well as its reputation, made me believe Loreto would
bring the best out of me.”
In three words how would you describe Loreto?
“Ambitious, Passionate and Relaxed.”
What opportunities have you had since being at Loreto?
“I have had a whole host of opportunities after starting at Loreto.
I have attended masterclasses after college to get a taste of what
the subject I want to do at university is like, I have also visited and
stayed at Cambridge University, exploring the colleges and town.
I have also been on a day trip to Keele university and to a
museum in Leeds. On top of this I have also been able to gain work
experience through Loreto.”
Would you recommend Loreto to a year 11 student?
“Yes, definitely. You get loads of freedom but are still pushed to
bring out the best in you. There is a huge amount of support
from staff and so far my first year has been brilliant.”
“College life can be however you want it to be at Loreto, you
can decide on more or less every aspect while still getting
guidance along the way. I've meet a ton of new people and
absolutely love it here.”
Natalie Curzon, a
former pupil at St
Antony's Catholic
College, is studying
Psychology, Sociology
and Business Studies
at AS level and BTEC
Performing Arts. Natalie
has participated in the
college production and
says “work hard and
you will achieve.”

,
Loreto students are offered
a rich experience in languages,
whether their preference is for the
multi-faceted nuances of our
English linguistic heritage,
or extended study of one
of a broad selection of
European languages.
In conjunction with conventional classroom based
studies, students in the English department are
encouraged to take advantage of the numerous
opportunities available to them, designed to enhance
their understanding of the spoken and written word.
Manchester is blessed with a magnificent theatrical
tradition and the department ensures that students
are in a position to see some of the best that the city
has to offer, in settings such as the Royal Exchange
Theatre. Recent performances included Maxine
Peake’s much vaunted interpretation of Hamlet.
Other trips have taken in productions of King Lear
and Othello. Another cultural gem in our city is the
splendid John Rylands Library, where our students
have the unique opportunity to view priceless English
manuscripts from across the centuries, including a
first edition of Samuel Johnson’s dictionary, an early
print of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and one of the
earliest known fragments of the New Testament.
A Focus on Languages
and Literature at Loreto
The department likes to promote creativity in
students; courses in A-level Literature and Language
both provide outlets for those students with a
penchant for the written word. Students also enter
literary competitions, such as the Foyle Young Poets
Award, and publish pieces of their own work in the
Manchester Muse, Loreto’s in-house e-magazine.
The spoken word is certainly not neglected and our
students participate in the Catenian Public Speaking
Contest and the national Poetry By Heart competition,
where their ability to deliver a presentation and to
engage with an audience is put to the test.
Visiting lecturers run workshops on set texts; students
travel to Haworth to the Bronte Parsonage Museum;
and the popular reading group provides a forum for
discussion and analysis of a range of texts, both
contemporary and from the classical literary canon.
Loreto English students are encouraged to take
every opportunity to enhance their classroom based
learning and to immerse themselves in a rich and
rewarding language based experience.

Modern Foreign Languages
The highly successful Languages department at
Loreto engages students in their chosen language of
study through a combination of cutting edge
teaching and unique extracurricular opportunities.
The department offers A-level courses in French,
German, Italian and Spanish, mostly taught by native
speakers of those languages, and makes extensive
use of visiting native speakers to enhance the
learning of students, particularly in spoken language.
The department seeks to make students aware of the
global context in which they will live their lives, and
the importance of knowing another language.
Learning another language will not only enrich their
lives but also make a significant difference to their
career prospects in an increasingly international
world.
Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide
variety of work experience placements abroad, giving
them vital experience of working in the language
they’re studying. French students travelled to Rouen
whilst Spanish students went to Salamanca, near
Madrid. They spent time working in a variety of
establishments from cafés to garden centres, to
nurseries to a pet shop! The students are not placed
with any other English speakers so must work
completely in their choses language, fully immersed
in the local culture. All students acquitted themselves
magnificently and took the opportunity to enhance
their conversation skills and to develop
a deeper knowledge of the culture
and customs of the areas.
Spanish students have been involved in the unique
Proyecto de doblaje (the dubbing project), working
with an MMU PhD student to use the technique of
dubbing and subtitling Spanish films to help them
improve their oral expression skills.
For the second consecutive year, Loreto College has
also been selected to take part in the European
Commission Translation Competition “Juvenes
Translatores”. The aim of the contest is to promote
language learning as well as joint activities with
colleges throughout Europe. Students had to battle
through a challenging translation in their chosen
language under exam conditions.
The departments have great success in preparing
students for further study at the best universities in
the country. Having left Loreto in 2014, Dylan Fuller
is now reading Modern Foreign Languages at Oxford
whilst Joshua Degenhardt and Chloe Jones are both
reading English at Cambridge. Many more of the
departments’ students go on to study Languages
and Literature related degrees at Russell Group
and other top universities.

Loreto Elite Athletic Development
(LEAD) programme
For the last 12 years Loreto has been renowned
for developing very talented basketballers, many of
whom have gone on to American Universities
and eventually to play professional basketball.
Loreto now attracts elite sports performers from
a wide variety of disciplines including track and
road cycling, wheelchair basketball, cricket,
athletics, swimming, water polo, gymnastics
and motor sports. These elite students have
chosen Loreto because of the combination of
outstanding academic results and the high
levels of staff experience in supporting sports
performers at this level. In response to the ever
growing number of elite performers joining
the college, Loreto has developed its LEAD
programme.
This specialised curriculum of support has
brought together a variety of national governing
bodies to develop a programme which is unique
to Loreto College. The programme looks at
developing the sports performers outside of
their everyday competition. Students receive
a specialist curriculum focusing on areas such
as nutrition, psychology, attitude and lifestyle
support. Students are guided by expert
lecturers, who have experience of working
with organisations such as UK Athletics,
The Football Premier League and England
Basketball, amongst many others.
Former student Clovis Asong, who benefited
from the support of the programme whilst at
Loreto, said: "The LEAD programme has really
helped with my preseason preparation. As the
number one UK 17-year-old 400 metre runner
I had access to the best coaches and all the
support from UK athletics. However the LEAD
programme has opened my eyes to other areas
to help improve my performance, including goal
setting and the importance of mental imagery as
part of my preparations for a race. The best part
of the programme is that I share my own
experience with other students from Loreto
who are elite in their own sports.”

Ellen Griffiths

Photography –
Photography lets me be
creative and think in
different ways to my
other subjects, the facilities
and the equipment are
fantastic too!
Ellen came to Loreto from St James’ Catholic
School. She is studying English Literature, History,
Photography and Sociology. Ellen says of her
experience of coming to Loreto
"I chose to attend Loreto after talking to friends that already
studied here and visiting on the open days. After looking
around the college, which has fantastic facilities, it was clear
there is a great atmosphere amongst the students and
teachers who were keen to learn and do well. Once I began
my AS year in September I knew I had made the right
decision as I have greatly benefitted from not only the high
standard of teaching, but the consistent enthusiasm my
teachers all clearly have for their subject. Loreto is a great
college when considering the level of care and interest
invested into each individual student. As a consequence of
this I have been able to take up the opportunities to visit
Cambridge University and take part in a Cambridge University
run programme called HE+ where I was able to expand my
knowledge in subjects I do not study and information
unrelated to any A-level course. Loreto
has provided me with the opportunity
to study subjects I have never really
considered before, such as
photography and sociology, both of
which I thoroughly enjoy. My favourite
extracurricular activity provided by
Loreto is debate club as I have been
able to broaden my mind, gain
communication skills and the skill of
reasoning, all of these can be
transferred into situations beyond
college. I'm very happy that I chose to
come here!"
10.15 - 10.30
Break – Time to
catch up with
friends!
11:40 – 1:00 Tutorial
and then a free period.
Loreto has three study
centres and a library so
there’s always somewhere
available to do homework
during free periods.
1:00 – 1:50 Lunch is at
the same time for everyone
at Loreto so you get to meet
lots of new people.
1:50 – 4:00 Double
Sociology – Sociology
is a really interesting
subject and it’s great
to be taught in such
modern class rooms.
