• For use in highest quality mainsails of 2.5 / 1
aspect ratio or less.
• In light through medium weights, Marbleheads
use close to even denier ratios: 1 / 1.5. In heavier
weights, the ratio becomes closer to 1 / 2. Fill
yarns are larger for more highly loaded sails. The
result is more even crimp, so yarns lock onto
each other, and rely more on weave tightness
than resin for bias durability.
• Marblehead weaves require half the resin to
achieve a particular bias spec than most high
aspect fabrics.
During resin impregnation the fabric is
immersed in a bath of suspended resin.
The resin is absorbed into the yarns.
The amount of resin determines the
firmness of the finished sailcloth.
The finish is so durable that a more severe
impact flutter machine was necessary to
sufficiently abuse flutter samples so as to
show a gap between initial and fluttered
sample graph curves on some fabrics.
In the pre-fatigued finish, a super-firm
formula of resin is used, which, after curing,
is beat up by the steel buttons of the button
breaker. The remaining resin is well bonded,
and the finish is tough and durable.

loadings of big mid-girths in lower aspect sails.
• Highest fill count, tightest weave for best
possible bias stability.
• More even crimp, where yarns grab each other
means lower bias stretch.

than when there is large disparity between

First conceived and practiced in the late 1990’s Challenge’s new patent
pending Warp-Drive is the first heavy woven sailcloth with straight warp yarns
and a tight weave.
Traditional polyester crosscut sails have utilized sailcloth with relatively
straight fill yarns and highly crimped warp yarns. This allows the sails to hold
their shape very well when heavily loaded. Woven warp oriented sailcloth
with straight warp yarns and highly crimped fill yarns was not available so
crosscut sails have been the logical choice. Now low stretch, low warp
crimp sailcloth is available. This makes the more efficient warp oriented radial
sail construction the best choice for a high performance woven sail.

has straight warp yarns with fill
yarns crimped and woven tightly
over and under them. For the
first time ever, the fill yarns are
on the surface.
WARP
FILL
A major advantage of radial construction is that the warp yarns closely
follow the load lines in the sail, so the stability of the air-foil depends much
less on the bias strength of the cloth. This means that the sail doesn't rely
on resin to maintain its camber, and as a result holds its shape much longer,
long after the crosscut sail has been distorted. One can make a sail that
holds its shape with a softer, easy to handle material.
OTHER WARP FABRIC
Competing warp fabrics use large
warp yarns, still crimped and thus
stretchy, and looser constructions.
WARP
Previously, reasonably good warp fabrics were available in lightweight 4 oz
sailcloth, but it was impossible to weave heavier low warp stretch sailcloth.
Now 30, 40, 50, and 60’ boats can have high performance radial sails made
of durable woven polyester sailcloth.
A sail of woven Warp-Drive sailcloth holds its shape far longer than a crosscut woven sail. It is more economical than a cruising laminate sail, and it won't
mildew as will a laminated sail. (Please note: it has a very high count of
fine denier fibers. For optimum UV resistance, please use our Radial Weaves
which have large warp yarns sitting on the surface exposed to the sun.)

FABRIC PROPERTIES
• Radial weaves use high warp counts of warp
yarns to achieve warp strength. They have substantially more yarn in the warp than in the fill.
• Radial Weaves are not as efficient as the high
count / fine denier Warp-Drive, but are better for
UV resistance.
• Lightweight fabrics are proportionately stronger
on the warp than heavier weights, because they
have lighter fill yarns: In weaving the warp is
pulled with very high tension, which bends light
fill yarns, leaving warp yarns with lower crimp.
But it is less able to bend heavy fills, leaving
more warp crimp, and higher stretch under load.

• Elite 33 is extremely strong and durable: It is the perfect
VMG fabric for classes like Farr 40’s. It is light, and stable,
so it is perfect for runners in the low end of the sail’s
application range. Weight: 0.78 oz, 33 g/m 2
• Elite 36 is slightly heavier, stronger, with higher tear strength
than Elite 33, with the same fibers. It is excellent for light
weight all purpose spinnakers, and for One Designs. Weight:
0.88 oz, 38 g/m2.
• Elite 40 is a scaled up version of Elite 33. It is perfect for
runners at the low end of their range, with the strength to
handle higher winds, and for VMGs. Weight: 0.92 oz, 40 g/m2.
• Elite 43 is a proportionate version of Elite 33 and 40. It
meets class rules and is the ideal choice for J24, Melges 24.

Code Zero Laminates
Challenge Sailcloth’s Code Zero Laminates are engineered to meet modern standards of design for various
code asymmetric sails. The extremely high-modulus 1000 Denier Twaron and Black Twaron D2226 fibers are
inserted during lamination, allowing for direct placement of fibers onto PET film. Previously, carrier scrims were
used to support the load bearing fibers before lamination, which added weight and manufacturing cost.
Challenge‘s new yarn insertion process has eliminated the need for this scrim by directly adding the yarns into
the cloth at the lamination nip. This results in excellent yarn tension control for a lower stretch, stronger and more
durable laminate.
Engineered in four different weights, Code Zero Laminates are perfect for step up construction in tri-radial panel
configuration on Code Zero spinnakers. As boat speed increases and apparent wind moves forward, loads on
a Code Zero spinnaker easily approach those seen on a light #1 genoa. X-ply fibers at 22° are viewed by most
sailmakers to be the best
angle to combat sail shape
deformation that occurs as

Challenge Sailcloth is now making official
Hood Vektron for Hood Sailmakers and
making it available to tohers. After an
extensive period of R&D and collaboration
of technical fiber, weaving, and finishing
techniques, Challenge has produced the
next generation of Vectran Sailcloth.
The same sophisticated and proprietary
techniques have been used that made
Vektron the choice of many sailors and
Projects such as The Global Challenge,
which considered the Vektron perhaps the
most durable sailcloth available.
Vektron sailcloth is a mixture of Highest Tenacity polyester and Vectran in the fill. (see photo) Super-High
Modulus VECTRAN® fibre yarns reinforce the Dacron fill fibres. Vektron has slightly lower stretch than
standard Dacron.
The experience of Global Challenge and others is that the Vekton concept enhances durability. In the
words of Hood: “In an effort to find a solution for the problems that could not be overcome with laminated
sailcloth”, Hood began work with Vectran in 1992. It has similar flex fatigue characteristics to Spectra®,
but unlike Spectra® has high heat resistance. This allows it to be woven with polyester, and through a
special process, can be shrunken around the Vectran fibre. Achieving a very low stretch non-laminated
woven sailcloth, as the stretch resistance is so improved, the true
weight of the sailcloth can be reduced for a given job, and in some
cases, compete with laminates on a weight-for-weight basis.
As the combination of Vectran and high tenacity polyester yields a
simple woven product, so can the simplicity of construction revert
back to crosscut horizontal panelling: significant in roller furling
either furling headstays in mast or more impotantly “in boom”
furling mainsails where partial reefing of the sail is common place.

Regular vinyls have blue or gray haziness to
them which is instantly visible when comparing
Strataglass to the regular vinyls being offered on
the market.
You may have noticed gray streaks in your vinyl
curtains in the past, consistent with the brass
grommets on your Bimini top or runoff points of
your top. The coating on Strataglass blocks these
elements from etching into the surface of the
vinyl. Regular vinyls absorb runoff elements.
Because you will see clearer, longer, you will find you don't need to replace the curtains as often.

bonded high performance polyethylene (HPPE) continuous filaments.
The thread is 15 times stronger than steel, but has such a low density that it floats on water. It is
hydrophobic, extremely durable (high resistance to UV-light, chemicals, water and abrasion) and
has a high fatigue and cut resistance. The melting point is approximately 150 degrees centigrade.
The thread should therefore be processed slowly and if necessary with needle cooling.

PRICES/DELIVERY
All goods are sold and invoiced at the prices ruling at the time of dispatch or when available for collection, freight and handling charges
may be applicable. These prices are dependent on a variety of variable factors including, but not limited to, fuel costs, rates of exchange
and other factors. Should these costs increase, Shann reserves the right to increase the price of any products without prior notice.
PAYMENT/MONTHLY TRADING
Strictly net cash 30 days from the end of the month of supply. Payment is not made until the clear funds are in the possession of the
Company. If the Customer fails to pay for any goods, the Company may refuse to deliver further goods until payment is made. The
customer will pay any costs associated with cheques being represented or dishonoured and/or any legal costs on a solicitor/ client basis
incurred in the recovery of a debt owing by the Customer. A credit card surcharge will apply to Visa & Mastercard payments.
If the Customer does not pay all the price for the goods on the due date, interest on the outstanding amount may be charged at the rate
of 4% per annum above the authorised dealers 90 day bank bill rate published in the Australian Financial Review on the due date or if
such rate ceases to be published the reasonable rate as determined by the Company.
NON STANDARD AND/OR CUSTOM MANUFACTURE
Cancellation of orders for non standard product sizes or put up will only be accepted on the basis that the client pays all costs incurred in
manufacture, up to the date of cancellation.
RETURNS
Only accepted with prior approval, quoting original invoice number(s) and subject to acceptance at our warehouse in RESELLABLE
CONDITION. A HANDLING CHARGE OF UP TO 20% may be applied to goods returned to cover costs of sorting, restocking, etc.
CLAIMS
No claims will be recognised unless made within 7 days from date of delivery.
WARRANTY
If goods under proper care and use are nevertheless proved to be of faulty manufacture and the fault is attributable to the Company, to
the extent permitted by law the Company’s liability shall be limited, at the Company’s option, to any one or more of the following:
(a) the replacement of the goods or the supply of equivalent goods;
(b) the repair of such goods;
(c) the payment of the cost of replacing the goods or of acquiring equivalent goods; and
(d) the payment of the cost of having the goods repaired.
To the extent permitted by law the Company will have no liability for any failure to deliver on time (or at all) any goods. The liability of the
Company for damage, loss, delay, non – delivery or for any cause thereof ceases upon release of goods to authorised third party carriers.
FORCE MAJEURE
Every effort will be made to carry our the contract based on quotation and terms given but the performance of the contract is subject to
variation or cancellation by the Company owing to acts of god, war, strikes, lockouts, fire, flood or any other cause beyond the control of
the Company.
PASSING OF TITLE
The property in and ownership of each of the goods supplies by the Company (the “Relevant Goods) remains with the Company at all
times until the while amount payable in connection with the Relevant Goods and all of any moneys outstanding from previous orders by
the Customer (together, the “Money Outstanding”) have been paid in full by the Customer and on such payment to the Company, the
property and ownership of the Relevant Goods passes to the Customer.
Until the Money Outstanding has been paid in full:
(a) the Customer holds the Relevant Goods as bailee and fiduciary of the Company and is liable to account to the Company for the
Relevant Goods or, if the Relevant Goods are sold by the Customer, for the proceeds of the sale of the Relevant Goods, such proceeds
to be paid into a separate bank account clearly specified as an account for that purpose;
(b) the Customer must retain the Relevant Goods in good merchantable condition and must ensure that the Relevant Goods are stored
separately and marked as the property of the Company; and (c) the Company may enter the premises of the Customer where the
Relevant Goods are or may reasonably be believed to be located, without liability for trespass or any resulting damage, and retake
possession of the Relevant Goods. Goods supplied to a Customer shall be at the risk of the Customer from the time the goods cease to
be within the actual possession of the Company or its agents. If the Customer should use, mix, add to, materially change, or create new
products from the Relevant Goods (the Resultant Products”), the Company will own and have all the proprietary interest in the Resultant
Products as security for the full payment of any amount owing to the Company by the Customer, as if the Resultant Products were
Relevant Goods. This transfer of ownership and proprietary interest in the Resultant Products will take place through and at the moment
of the operation or event by which the goods are converted into the Resultant Products.
DIRECTORS GUARANTEE AND INDEMNITY
Where the Customer is a Company the directors may be required to sign a director’s guarantee and indemnity.
LEGAL CONSTRUCTION
This agreement will be governed by the laws of Victoria and the Customer consents to the jurisdiction of the Courts at Melbourne.
OWNERSHIP OF MATERIAL
All trademarks, servicemarks, or registered trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

No variation or cancellation of any of these conditions of sale will be binding on the Company unless agrees to by a responsible officer of
the Company in writing.
