Super Bowling In-League
Event Ready to Kick Off
Adult league bowlers will have an opportunity to win cash prizes and
Miller Lite premium prizes during the BPANJ Super Bowling In-League
Pins-Over-Average Tournament which will be conducted Monday,
January 16 - 29 in member centers.
The tournament format is three-game pins-over-average with the top
three bowlers in each center winning cash awards — 50% for 1st place,
30% for 2nd place, and 20% for 3rd place. Plus the highest pins-overaverage score from each center will bee ranked on an association wide
basis with the top three bowlers receiving Miller Lite premium prizes.
Entry fee is $5 per bowler with $3 going into the center level prize
fund and $2 for the bowling center. Participating centers have been
provided promotional banners from Miller Lite and promotional fliers,
rules, and entry forms.
For more information about the tournament, contact the BPANJ office
at 410-356-0936 or e-mail [email protected].
John Fatigati assumes presidential reins
John Fatigati of Jersey Lanes was elected president of the BPANJ
for 2012 at the October 26 meeting. The other officers remained in place
— Nadine Dileo (vice president), Richard Mark (secretary), and Tom
Martino, Jr. (treasurer).
Who Should Your Bowling Center Target to Increase Open Play?
50% of Workers Earned Less Than $26,000 in 2010
If you have been wondering why open play bowling is off (as are restaurants, bars and
nightclubs), maybe this article will shed some light on the issue. The following article was
excerpted from a recent report on payroll taxes.
1) Half of all workers made less than $26,364, the median wage in 2010. That means the
typical wage is at its lowest level since 1999, after adjusting for inflation.
2) The number of millionaires increased by about 20 percent.
3) The size of the missing work force is 10 million. The number of working people fell by 5.2
million since 2007. But that’s not the entire job deficit, because, based on population growth
estimates, 4.5 million more would have joined the work force between 2007 and 2011. Add it
up and you get a 10-million-worker gap.
Median pay took a nose dive after 2007, effectively wiping out all gains made in the
previous eight years. The macro explanation is that the economy shrunk and middle class
jobs disappeared and were replaced with (or outlasted by) lower-paying positions that
companies kept on. But the economy isn’t one giant corporation. It’s thousands of giant,
medium-sized, and small companies in industries that lived through very different recessions.
So to fix our open play, is it an either or situation of having to cut our prices to get to this
market or target a more affluent market? Perhaps a combination of both.
Or do we create a high level bowling loyalty program that encourages repeat business by
offering discounts for future business transactions?
What would you do?

Seminar a
big success
A marketing seminar on planning for and growing open
bowling business this winter was
presented by the BPANJ on
Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Jersey
Lanes. Executive Director Fred
Kaplowitz presented the seminar
which proved to be valuable and
insightful.
New ideas, strategies and
tactics were discussed, giving
those in attendance more
motivation to focus on this
segment of their business.
January through March typically
represents the peak of the open
play business so it is critical to
maximize lineage and revenue
during this period. Those who
attended benefited greatly.
