Her cello improvises dialogues with “imaginary choruses” using vocals from around the world that are mixed and transcribed on magnetic tape. In partnership with the Festival Choral Académique de l’Académie Aix-Marseille and in association with the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud d’Aix-en-Provence, the Festival d’Aix is launching a project going back to where the journey began for 2017. Sonia Wieder-Atherton and Philippe Franceschi will prepare and train students throughout the 2016/17 season with the involvement of choirs from in and around the city. The first series of performances will be held in June 2017 at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud as part of Aix en Juin followed by a series in Manosque where the cellist will improvise live with the choruses joining her on stage directed by Philippe Franceschi. In July 2017, the idea of this concert will be covered by the Festival d’Aix with magnetic tape as the chorus’ work will be subject to an audio and spatialisation creation. 9 20 Académie du Festival d’Aix th 10 The Académie du Festival d’Aix is a centre of excellence for vocal and instrumental training, a platform for reflecting, experimenting and creating opera and innovative forms, and a place that caters for the professional development of young artists. It offers them the opportunity to take part in residencies and perform in concerts and opera productions at the Festival d’Aix as well as on tours across France and abroad throughout the year. Through its four main training areas, which are voice, chamber music, creation and orchestra, the Académie upholds the values of exchange, development and cultural enrichment in the form of multidisciplinary and intercultural activities, creation and outreach for all of its programmes. Last but not least, through its networks, enoa (European Network of Opera Academies) and Médinea (Mediterranean Incubator of Emerging Artists), the Académie promotes mobility for young artists within the Euro-Mediterranean area all year round, in order to encourage artistic and cultural meetings. 2017 TRAINING PROGRAMME These workshops and residences provide practice sessions for selected young artists around the world followed by public performances in the form of concerts, masterclasses and encounters with the public. From 12th to 24th June 2017 Mozart RESIDENCY – as part of the enoa Ever since the curtain was first raised on the Festival d’Aix, it has always featured Mozart. It’s no surprise then that the Académie has become a key training and professional development venue for vocal coach pianists and singers wanting to develop and refine their interpretation of the Mozartian repertoire. This singers’ residency will be dedicated to the Austrian master and features stage and musical work directed by talented vocal coach pianists and a choreographer. Ten singers and three pianists will have the opportunity to benefit from a rewarding experience with Susanna Eken, vocal professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. As a specialist in the Mozart repertoire and a familiar face at the Festival d’Aix, this peerless tutor will engage with Mozart’s work by adopting a combined technical and physiological approach to the voice. From 13th June to 16th July 2017 Pinocchio residency The Académie is greatly concerned about supporting modern music and promoting future artists. For several years now, it has offered a residency for singers seeking to develop their skills in a contemporary repertoire. Spurred on by this desire, and at the request of composer, Philippe Boesmans, the 2017 Festival d’Aix is recruiting six understudies (two sopranos, one mezzo-sopranos, one tenor, one baritone, one bass-baritone) to stage the Pinocchio opera. The singers will play a key part in this production, follow all the steps in its creative process and make the most of their time in Aix-en-Provence to broaden their understanding of the contemporary repertoire and contribute to new forms of writing through this residency reserved just for them. 11 From 21st June 21 to 21st July 2017 Erismena residency To stage the Erismena opera by Francesco Cavalli for the 2017 Festival d’Aix, young understudy singers will be recruited from the very first rehearsal to the last performance. These singers will be prepared for all eventualities, even replacing a singer who, for various reasons, could not perform or take part in the tours as planned. After being actively involved in rehearsals, the understudies will take part in a residency to supplement and broaden their knowledge of the baroque repertoire in its entirety. The understudy singers will be supervised by renowned musicians and have the chance to explore drama as well as expressive and stylistic trends of a multi-faceted repertoire through the prism of the Venetian School. From 26th June to 5th July 2017 Opera Creation Workshop – as part of the enoa The Opera Creation Workshop is open each year to young creators from all disciplines and is a place for reflection and discussion on artistic opera-related issues. This workshop seeks to define current values of opera and the tasks it will assume in the future. The British stage director, Katie Mitchell, and composer, Philippe Boesmans, will open the debate on current opera creation together with its multi-disciplinary guise and enlighten it with their own experiences. From 3rd to 15th July 2017 Chamber Music Residency Violinists, András Keller (member of the Keller Quartet) and David Alberman (member of the London Symphony Orchestra) are combining their talents as artists and tutors for the benefit of young ensembles (string quartets and piano trios) wanting to refine their approach to all repertoires, from classic to contemporary music. This residency will be the ideal opportunity to open up to contemporary creation and get to grips with new languages by working alongside current composers. Mediterranean Youth Orchestra FROM 7th to 28th July 2017 Mediterranean Youth Orchestra symphonic session The symphonic session by the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra is a pivotal experience in the training and burgeoning career of young Mediterranean artists who get the chance to practise under the guidance of renowned conductors and alongside experienced musicians from world-famous orchestras. Young musicians from twenty Mediterranean countries will have the opportunity to perform the repertoire for a large-scale orchestra and experience their first concert and tour together. FROM 10th TO 21st July 2017 intercultural creation session Twelve Mediterranean musicians will join saxophonist and jazzman Fabrizio Cassol for a unique composition experience. This is the opportunity to unearth and put the spotlight on young, bold, talented and passionate improvisers from the worlds of jazz and traditional Mediterranean music. An original encounter with different musical styles orchestrated with generosity and a sense of togetherness. 12 2017 CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES OF THE ACADÉMIE These events see some of the best young artists from previous Académie events return to the stage. June 2017 musical performance La Fondation La Poste has an original and eclectic sponsorship programme for written expression. Since 2004, La Fondation La Poste has sponsored the Académie du Festival d’Aix. It focuses on encouraging the creation of shows based on musicians’ texts and letters. It has seen letters by Erik Satie, Benjamin Britten, Pauline Viardot, Reynaldo Hahn and Claude Debussy in the hands of young directors such as Bellorini, Olivier Balazuc, Côme de Bellescize, Vincent Huguet, Marc Lainé and more. In 2017, the director Matthieu Cruciani will explore letters by Stravinsky in a musical performance for a piano, two singers and an actor as part of Aix en Juin. From 12th to 15th June July 2017 Creation & Innovation Workshop The Académie is a professional development venue for young artists and offers various training programmes to help them launch their careers in the best possible conditions. By making the new generation of creators aware of audience development, the Académie seeks to foster contemporary debate on creation and its economic realities, while inciting the renewal of artistic and musical practices through an interdisciplinary, intercultural and innovative approach. This training programme will provide an advantageous setting for study, experimentation and creation during the festival period. It gives young creators and performers the opportunity to develop their innovative artistic and musical projects (musical theatre, recitals, dance, performance, educational and participatory projects, etc.) and benefit from professional tools and expertise through tailored artistic and technical guidance. Selected projects will participate in training sessions, followed by a public performance to be arranged in Aix-en-Provence. June-July 2017 Concerts by HSBC Laureates of the Académie du Festival d’Aix Committed to sponsoring young talents, HSBC France has been joining with the Académie du Festival d’Aix since 2006. The artistic direction of the Festival selects each year a new set of singers, pianists vocal coaches and chamber music ensembles. The HSBC France group supports these young artists, the HSBC Laureates, chosen among the Académie’s most promising talents and give them the chance to perform in recitals and concerts both in France and abroad. The Festival d’Aix is proud of the HSBC Laureates award and these laureate artists take pride of place in the festival schedule every summer. Exceptional recitals will be staged in June and July 2017 by HSBC Laureates from different years who are now experienced artists and performing in the Festival’s operas among others. July 2017 Intercultural creations – Medinea sessions These musical projects resulting from the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra’s intercultural creation session bring together young artists in the Medinea network. Beijing Music Festival partnership launch The performance of Robert Carsen’s Midsummer Night’s Dream in Beijing in October 15th and 16th 2016 marks the beginning of the 5-year partnership starting this year between the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Beijing Music Festival. The collaboration will continue in years to come with the performance of Written on Skin, Pelléas et Mélisande in China and the commissioning of two new operas. A closer bond with the Bolshoi Theatre The Bolshoi has been one of the Festival d’Aix’s partners for years. It has co-produced Don Giovanni, Rigoletto and Alcina (repertoire productions). Next season, it will exceptionally present two shows by Katie Mitchell created for the Festival d’Aix: Written on Skin (2012) and Trauernacht (2014). This rendezvous in Moscow will be renewed every two years, with other productions from the Festival d’Aix. The Festival d’Aix will also welcome in July 2017 the solists, chorus and orchestra of the Bolshoï for a concert version of Eugene Onegin (see page 7). The Mediterranean: intercultural projects, tours and training The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence has had an open policy for artists and music from the Mediterranean region since 2008. This part of the world deals with tension of all kinds and needs to build a fertile intercultural dialogue to overcome language, social and political barriers now more than ever. In 2017, the Festival d’Aix plans to continue to contribute to the cultural dialogue between Europe and the Mediterranean with a series of activities and artistic projects: Kalîla wa Dimna opera tour The production of Kalîla wa Dimna was created in July 2016 and will go on an international tour visiting in particular the Lebanon during the 2016/2017 season. Mediterranean Youth Orchestra concerts and training sessions The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra will host almost a hundred young instrument players from the ProvenceAlpes-Côte d’Azur and Mediterranean regions in July 2017 for training sessions and a series of concerts.
