We have 3 buildings in Stanley Place, a small historic square in the centre of Chester. The school buildings were the homes of Chester’s rich and famous people over 200 years ago. In the summer some courses are based on the University of Chester campus and sometimes courses may be held in one of the historic black and white palaces in central Chester. All aspects of language are covered with an emphasis on speaking and listening. These carefully structured and flexible courses give students an opportunity to select afternoon options to meet their specific needs. These options are also available to students following other routes depending on availability and level. Options may include, for example: Conversation Skills, Improve your Vocabulary, Communication Activities, Grammar Workshop, Reading and Discussion, Writing, English through Drama or Song, Film and Literature, Focus on Chester. The course is offered in the main school and is a combination of General English and Business English. Students on the Young Executive Course may also take the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) Preliminary or Vantage examination course. These are 4-week courses held at different times of the year. Please see the Examination Courses section for further details. TOEIC can be taken at English in Chester on any Friday by request (fees on application). IELTS preparation is available for students with a B1+ level. Students will normally be able to take IELTS in May and December (and September, subject to demand). Route D is not offered between June and September when students may join the Pre-sessional Course. We can also offer support to students applying to go on to University if this is required. ADDITIONAL INDIVIDUAL LESSONS Students on any of our General English courses can have 4 additional lessons/3 hours of individual tuition each week for £180.00. On our General English & Examination courses there will be NO LESSONS on public holidays: Friday 22 April, Monday 25 April, Monday 2 May, Monday 30 May and Monday 29 August and there is no discount in fees. www.english-in-chester.co.uk 2011 Multi-Centre General English Courses Chester / Bristol / London If you’re 18 or over and want to improve your English, why don’t you think about studying in two or three different locations in England? You will see more of the country, have a great time and really improve your English. This joint programme is run by English in Chester, the English Language Centre (Bristol) and the Hampstead School of English (London). City Centre, Chester Avon Gorge, Bristol Tower Bridge, London DATES & FEES You can study for a long or a short period in two or three of these locations. The only requirement is that you spend a minimum of 2 weeks in each school. Send your application for the whole stay to the first school you want to study at. These courses provide an excellent introduction to life and academic study in Britain. LESSONS/HOURS PER WEEK 30 lessons / 22.5 hours including: • 20 lessons General English Language Development • 10 lessons Study Skills and Academic English START DATES 16, 12 and 6 weeks before the University academic year Pre-sessional courses are necessary for students who have been accepted by Keele University or the University of Chester but who need to improve their English language level. These universities will recommend an English in Chester course. If you are accepted on a pre-sessional course you will then receive an unconditional offer for undergraduate or postgraduate study at your chosen university. To progress to your chosen university you must, of course, have a good attendance record, satisfactorily complete your course assignments and be recommended by your course tutor. There are different entry points depending on your level of English. Students with a low level of English can follow a General English course before transferring to a pre-sessional course. Tuition on a General English course will cost £205.00 per week. It is a heritage city with unique charm. The buildings, history, traditions and position on the River Dee make Chester a leading tourist centre attracting many international visitors. We create opportunities for students to increase their confidence in English at the same time as they learn about the culture and customs of other nations. The afternoon activities and excursions encourage the students to work together in English, activating their language in a natural and communicative manner. In recent years groups have come from Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Austria, Mexico, Japan, Poland, Argentina, France, Hong Kong and the Czech Republic. These courses can be run at any time of year, but not normally during July and August, for a group of young learners. Course dates, course intensity, programme details with inclusive excursions and activities, class size and accommodation requirements are all negotiable. Special arrangements can be made for small groups of children from the age of ten. Our intensive Courses for Business and Professional People will give you a competitive edge. Our Courses for Business and Professional People are run in our Language Training Centre. This was opened in 1995 and is a separate, historic building opposite the main school. The centre provides a comfortable learning environment with good training and technology facilities, including a computer room, language laboratory and Wi-Fi Internet access throughout the building. There is a growing demand for intensive English language courses that are very closely related to a specific professional area. Our short, concentrated ESP courses meet that demand. Our ESP courses have developed naturally to highlight some of the strengths of Chester. The Weekender is an excellent and enjoyable way to maximise time spent learning English. It is more than a language course. English is spoken all the time and there is a lot of contact with teachers who take part in conversation and correct any mistakes made. There are also important social and tourism elements giving participants a well-balanced, enjoyable and useful weekend. Our Excursions Co-ordinator organises an excellent, full and varied programme at additional cost. Students can select from the programme and participate in activities / events that they are interested in. On some courses there is an inclusive social programme. A return Meet & Greet transfer costs £100.00. We require students under 16 travelling alone to use the Meet & Greet Service if they are not being met independently by family or friends. Please note that this service may not be appropriate for 14 and 15 year olds travelling on some low-cost airlines. It is the responsibility of parents to check this when booking flights. Students under 18 should also carry with them a parental letter of consent (proforma available from the school) and a copy of their offer letter for the course, as they may be required to show these on entry to the UK. TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. Registration All courses must be booked in advance. Courses can begin on any Monday where appropriate or as stated in the brochure. English in Chester reserves the right to alter or cancel the course programme, change teachers and location and alter dates & fees from those stated in the brochure without prior notice. Please send your deposit, along with your signed application form and a copy of your passport, at least 4 weeks in advance of your course. Please note the deposit cannot be returned under any circumstances. (Unless we are unable to accept your booking.) If you will be applying for a General Student Visa then please see the separate forms on our website or contact the school for further information. Students and/or agents and/or parents are reminded of the need to disclose medical information about the student to the school when the application is made. 2. Booking confirmation Once your completed application form and deposit have been received and accepted you will receive a confirmation of booking by email. If you require documents to be posted, please inform the school. 3. Payment methods Fees must be paid in full 4 weeks before the start of the course. Your course and accommodation will be cancelled if we do not receive the payment and you do not contact us about this. All payments should be in sterling (£). There is a 2% charge for credit card use. • Travellers cheques or personal bank cheques (we cannot accept Euro cheques). 4. Postponement If you want to postpone your course, you must do this in writing. You may not postpone courses due to start within the next 28 days. You may only postpone if there is space available on the new course dates you wish to attend. 5. Cancellation or curtailment If you decide to cancel your course this must be done in writing by email or fax. Cancellation fees are as follows: • Cancellation from 28 days to 7 days before the start of the course – 50% of the total price may be refunded • Cancellation less than 7 days before the start of the course – no refund The deposit is non-refundable at any time. The accommodation placement fee is non-refundable. If cancellation is due to a visa refusal a refund will only be given once we have received a signed copy of the visa refusal letter. The deposit and accommodation placement fee are non-refundable. If you decide to leave the school before the end of your course then fees will not normally be refunded. Any refunds are at the discretion of the Principal. 6. Extension If you want to extend your course this is possible, provided there is space available. Please note it may not be possible for you to remain with the same host family if you choose to extend your course. 7. Accommodation If you wish to stay in accommodation organised by the School we will do everything possible to meet your requirements. This may not always be possible and priority will be given to medical requirements such as allergies. If you wish to leave accommodation arranged by the School you must give the host one week’s notice, or pay them a cancellation charge of one week’s fees. 8. Holiday If you are on a long course you should pre-book the number of weeks holiday you wish to take before the start of the course. If holidays are not pre-booked, tuition fees will not be refunded. Holiday allowances are max 10 days for a 12-24 week course, max 15 days for a 24-36 week course and 20 days for a 36-week + course. 9. Insurance We strongly recommend that you take out travel and health insurance. The school will not be responsible for resolving any issues that arise from lack of insurance cover on the part of the student. English in Chester strictly adheres to the published age limits for courses but reserves the right to accept students who are slightly younger or older than the advertised minimum/maximum age. Applications from students outside the published age limits are treated on a case by case basis. Also in extreme and very rare circumstances the stated maximum class size might be exceeded.
