Undergraduate Programmes
UNDERGRADUATE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
We accept a wide range of international qualifications equivalent to UK GCE
Advanced Level. Please refer to individual programme pages for details.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Each of our undergraduate degrees is offered to students with a one-year
professional paid work placement (four year programme) or without this
placement (three year programme).
The four-year programme (including one-year professional, paid work placement)
contains identical academic content in Years 1 and 2 as that of the three year
programme. The major difference is the placement with a business organisation in
Year 3. Research informs us that the 12-month placement enhances the academic
performance in Year 4.
The decision whether to undertake a placement year or not is left to the student.
If you choose to undertake this, you will be supported by a Placement Tutor from
Chester Business School who will visit you and your employer to help and advise
you both. Many students will find that a year’s placement enhances their academic
performance in their final year and increases their employability.

Mariam Ghudushauri
I chose to study at the University of Chester because of the partnership
that my University in Georgia has with Chester. I found my experience
at Chester awarding and amazing, the memories of which will always
stay with me. The University staff are very helpful and friendly, and
were always ready to give support to students. I enjoyed the process
on working on assignments and a dissertation which involved a
lot of self-studying. My supervisor and all my lecturers were always
ready to give me support, which helped me to complete my degree
successfully. The city of Chester is beautiful historic city which has
lots of clubs, shops and restaurants. The city centre is only a short

distance from the Campus. While living and studying in Chester I
also worked part-time at Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse in
England, which was a great and fun experience. I also visited Liverpool,
Manchester and London with my friends which were easy to travel
to from Chester. The knowledge and experience I gained at Chester
helped me to find a very interesting job back in Georgia where I am
working as an Investments Project Manager currently working on
World Bank projects at the United Water Supply Company of Georgia.

Kailei Yang
I chose to study in UK because I was attracted by the teaching style
of English education. This will be really helpful to my future life. The
University of Chester is a very beautiful place and my lecturers are very
nice. My first impression was: I am going to study in a garden.
I am trying to get high marks of my subject so that I can find a wellpaid job in UK in the future. I also plan to do business in China in
the future because I am aware of the business managing difference
between China and UK. It will be a challenge to me but I like it.
The biggest change in myself after I came here, is I can now live like the local
people and try to feel the happiness of English people. It is a good experience.

WHY STUDY AN MBA FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER?
The Preparing for Research module will involve the submission of written
elements and the presentation of your Research Proposal. This is an
important aspect preparing you for the Research Project. The Research
Project itself is between 14,000 and 16,000 words. It must demonstrate your
ability to plan and conduct research at Masters level. This is an important
element of the MBA programme which you undertake independently but
with support and guidance from your research supervisor.
Yogender Singh Raghav
A recent graduate, Yogender found the right balance between the city of Chester and
tthe University, as he was able to follow his interests while achieving notable academic
ssuccess.
Yogender Singh Raghav, originally from Alwar, Rajasthan in India, wanted to come
Y
tto England to study at Masters level after earning his undergraduate degree in India.
FFollowing some research, he was drawn to Chester because of factors such as its status
aas a heritage city, the Roman culture, the contrast to the history of Rajasthan and
Chester’s historic racecourse – the oldest still in use in Britain. Yogender’s big passion in
C
llife is horses and so he has spent a lot of time at Chester Racecourse, where he was able
tto make many friends, and pursued his interest further by becoming a member of the
University’s Equestrian Club.
U
IIn addition, Yogender was able to capitalise on his time at the University by being an

dissertation on the service quality of the University’s own International Higher Education

NEW FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 – MBA NAMED PATHWAYS*
MBA with International Business
The University of Chester is pleased to announce the MBA course now
offers pathway options in addition to the general MBA degree. Pathways
provide a great opportunity to tailor your degree to best fit your career
goals and exhibit expertise within your field. Pathways include the
following:
Students who take the International Business pathway will gain an
understanding of the underlying imperatives and drivers of international
business, and the frameworks and models which provide an examination
of the key decisions in developing and executing successful business
strategies in an increasingly competitive global environment.
MBA with Services Management
MBA with Human Resource Management
This pathway focuses on developing the ‘service perspective’ in
business. Students who take this pathway will gain an understanding
of the underpinning frameworks and models which help examine
a service perspective and develop strategies to achieve sustainable
competitive advantage.
The HRM pathway is designed for current and future leaders who
desire the knowledge and skills to best leverage the human resources
in an organisation. This pathway is ideal for students who wish to
focus their MBA to meet specific career requirements and gain a
deeper understanding of human resource management.
MBA with International Marketing
MBA with Finance
Whilst there is an argument that in an increasingly flat world ‘one size
fits all’, students who take up this pathway will be able to explore
differences that exist, examine the various frameworks, models and
theories that can be applied to a practical setting and accordingly
shape marketing strategies that would help compete in a global
environment.

Muhammed Jawwad Baig
Well . . . To be very honest, I chose the University of Chester, UK because of two things:
1) Ranking of Business School (Guardian 2013)
2) Economical Tuition Fee
It’s really very hard to find a good business school which does not compromise on its quality of
teaching even on such an economical price. I have noticed the rate of change in the rankings of
this business school which evolved from merely an average rank to a very good rank of about
37, which is very rare to see in the cases of other business schools. It indicates how much effort
the University is putting each year to grow and picture itself in the league of the finest business
schools. So far, it has been an enriching experience to study in a country like UK because here
there are so many opportunities for learning. Teaching style differs from the traditional Asian
teaching style because here students are encouraged to emphasise more on self-study and
group-related activities like healthy and positive group discussions. The weather here was difficult
to adjust to, at first due to the falling of temperatures, but I gradually got used to it. Being a Muslim,
I did not encounter any kind of problems regarding food because there are many shops as well as
restaurants where you can purchase Halal Food.
Personally I am a very social guy. I made many new friends here especially from India, China,
Nigeria and Germany. It was really great to interact with them because being a good manager,
it’s very vital for you to know what kind of cultures/ethics exist within the people of different
nationalities and how they cope up with challenges. I really enjoyed visiting places like
Huddersfield, Manchester, Leeds and London.

What attracted you to the programme? “The MSc in Management with International Business has enabled me to think more in
depth about my work and always ask “what if, how so, etc...” It gets me to see how I can always add value in whatever I am doing for
my customers.”
What I discovered during the course? “My Tourism degree gave me a good grounding which I’ve been able to build on with the
MSc. I am looking to develop an application (App) and my skills have taught me how to manage and co-ordinate efficiently and
effectively between lots of different stakeholders and ensure the end user gets a good quality and worthwhile service.”
My future goals: “I have been offered a position as a lecturer at the Florence University of Art (FUA). I’m teaching two modules
currently – Business Strategy and International Management. My long term plan is to develop an application (App) for iPhones and
iPads. So far I have a school and a university in Florence interested in adopting it.”

And finally...!
Chester
h
students thanked by the Council for helping two high-profile events
Students from the University of Chester have been given a well-earned thank
you for their efforts in helping Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Arts and
Festivals team deliver two high-profile events in 2012.
Professor Wheeler stated: “The University is committed to developing
students who can apply their knowledge in practical ways and prides itself on
encouraging them to work with, and benefit, the wider community.
In May, members of the University events society assisted in stewarding
Chester’s successful Olympic torch celebrations, helping the well-received
event run smoothly.
“Groups such as the Chester Events Society embody these ideals and it is
wonderful to see and celebrate these successes”
Pictured below are the students with Councillor Booher.
After the success of the partnership, it was decided to give the society an
opportunity to have a more involved role for another of Chester’s big events;
the Christmas Lights Switch On.
The students gained vital experience and assisted in all areas of the event,
from helping to write the initial event plan, conducting risk assessments right
the way through to stewarding the 6,000 strong crowd on the night.
At the ceremony, held at the University, the students received certificates and
thanks from the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Pamela Booher and Vice
Chancellor of the University Professor Tim Wheeler. Special thanks were given
to Chloe Griffin and Daniel McDermott-Roe who drove forward the plans and
coordinated the stewarding on the night.
Councillor Booher said: “These students have really taken the opportunity
to further develop their skills by working with us on two of our high-profile
events.
“The assistance they provided was invaluable and we look forward to working
closely with the University in the future to provide more opportunities for
their students.”
Business community helps student enterpreneurs to reach Rio
A group of enterprising students from the University of Chester has been given
the exciting opportunity to travel to Rio de Janeiro for the Global Entrepreneurship
Congress 2013 (GEC2013) thanks to the support of the local business community.
An original and unique initiative, ‘Destination Rio’ challenged teams of students to
meet the mission of transforming an initial investment of just £10 into the profits
necessary to fund travel to the GEC 2013 through a series of tasks designed to test
their enterprise skills.
Twenty teams embarked upon the first stage, a 48-hour ‘£10 Challenge’ event,
which has since received a ‘Badge of Honour’ and recognition as a ‘High Impact’
event by the organisers of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012.
Ten teams progressed and, supported by a business mentor, developed their
business ideas and concepts in a bid to raise the funds.
Riverside Innovation Centre (RIC) staff behind the initiative, and the teams who
reached the final stage, shared their entrepreneurial journey with people who
have been particularly supportive of the project including both team mentors
and partners.
In an exciting finale, ‘Funders of Last Resort’ pledged to support teams who
had not quite reached the finish line. Funders including: Fran Hulbert, Chair of
the RIC Steering Group; Neal Edwards, Wheatsheaf Investments; John-Newton
Jones, Snowdonia Cheese; and David Pickering, Meadow Foods Ltd, provided
a substantial amount of sponsorship, which was subsequently allocated to the
teams who impressed the most.
The RIC is part-funded by the ERDF. Kirsty Badrock, Innovation and Enterprise
Co-ordinator, said: “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming amount
of support the project has received from local businesses. The list of people to
thank is truly endless; all of whom have come together to provide this enriching
experience for our students.”
Four teams will now travel to Rio de Janeiro to attend the main summit of the
GEC2013, network with local entrepreneurs and business owners, meet with
entrepreneurial students studying at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio
de Janeiro, and experience the business culture of a city rising in stature with
the backdrop of the upcoming 2014 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
Michael Williams, a second-year Business Management and Entrepreneurship
student, said: “I am very excited to be travelling to Rio as part of Challenge 2013.
It has been a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging experience. I look forward to
meeting the international delegates at the GEC, the Brazilian business leaders and
students studying in Rio.
“I am immensely appreciative of the support given by the funders to get us to Rio
and thoroughly enjoyed talking about my company, MD Supplies Ltd and getting
feedback and advice on how I can develop it further in the future.”
