The children’s arts tax credit and the children’s útness tax credit allow you to claim a 15% non-refundable tax credit on an amount up to $500 per child per credit on the fees you’ve paid in the previous year to register a child in a prescribed program of eligible activities. This can give you a credit of up to $75 per child per credit. IMPORTANT FACTS • Eligible activities for the children’s arts tax credit include artistic or cultural activities such as art classes, piano lessons, and tutoring, as well as other activities that are intended to improve a child’s dexterity or co-ordination. • Eligible activities for the children’s útness tax credit include strenuous games like hockey or soccer and activities such as golf lessons, horseback riding, sailing, and bowling, as well as others that require a similar level of physical activity. • You can claim these credits for your child, as well as for the child of your spouse or common-law partner. • The child must have been under 16 years of age (or under 1 years of age if eligible for the disability tax credit) at the beginning of the year in which the eligible expenses were paid. • You can claim an additional amount of $500 for each eligible child who qualiúes for the disability amount and for whom you paid a minimum of $100 in registration or membership fees. • Two parents can claim eligible fees for the same child, as long as they do not claim the same fees and the combined amount is not more than $500. Don’t forget to save your receipts. For more information on the children’s arts tax credit, go to www. cra.gc.ca/artscredit, and for the children’s útness tax credit, go to ZZZFUDJFFDúWQHVV. TAX CREDIT ELIGIBILITY You can claim this amount if another person has not already claimed the same fees and the total claimed is not more than the maximum amount that would be allowed if only one of you were claiming the amount. Children with Disabilities-If the child is eligible for the disability tax credit and is under 1 years of age at the beginning of the year, you can claim an additional amount of $500 if a minimum of $100 is paid for registration or membership fees for a prescribed artistic program. ARTS PROGRAM QUALIFICATIONS To qualify for this amount, a program must: • be ongoing (at least eight consecutive weeks, or in the case of children’s camps, úve consecutive days); • be supervised; and • be suitable for children. So ALL Kids Can P la KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 6-1 years. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the únancial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs. For more information see the West Kelowna Recreation and Culture website at www.westkelownacity.ca or call the City of West Kelowna at 77-797-00. 52 Spring 2016 | West Kelowna Recreation Guide | Think Active Be Active Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life. TR E TOWN CEN Since its launch in February 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program. Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 5 and 1 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $300 per child can be allocated per season. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.
