Teacher Development Program
District Initiatives
Assessment
District assessment initiatives provide in-service support for teachers to explore and develop assessment tools for supporting learning and directing instruction for student success.
Literacy
Our district consists of a Primary Literacy Coordinator (K-3) and
an Intermediate/Middle years Curriculum Coordinator(Gr. 4-9).
These teachers offer many types of support such as literacy inservice, co-planning of project based initiatives and side by side
assessment sessions to support teacher development and learning success. Our district literacy coordinators use research based
literacy practices.
Healthier Schools Healthier Students
Health Promoting Schools is a joint project between School District #22 and Interior Health. The goal is to increase the number of
healthy students by developing programs and policies that promote and support nutritional healthy school food programs, mental
health wellness, tobacco reduction, substance abuse education,
and family life education.
Technology
The goal of the district technology in-service initiatives is to develop and enhance information technology and digital literacy skills
using a variety of educational web based communication tools to
support learning. Some of these initiatives may be through providing onsite technology mentorship to teachers and students. This
program is designed to facilitate the integration of technology into
all areas of the curriculum.
Numeracy
We have a K-9 Numeracy coordinator who provides collaborative
support and guidance to teachers in developing assessment tools,
pedagogical understandings in numeracy, mathematical use and
support of manipulatives in the classroom. Some in-service sessions will be offered in developing mathematical understandings in
numeracy and ways to use teacher created assessments to direct
instruction for improved student learning.
The Teacher Development Program is a
joint project between the School District
and the Vernon Teachers’ Association.
The VTA, district staff, elementary and
secondary school teachers and administrators have worked together to plan activities that will provide participants with
opportunities for orientation, mentorship and in-service.
Resources are allocated, based on the number of teachers
participating, to provide workshops, support for peer observation within schools and opportunities for beginning and
experienced teachers to cooperatively plan and teach.
Orientation
The orientation component will introduce the teacher to district and school general information, mission statements,
goals, policies, procedures, collective agreements, facilities,
special programs and resource people.
Mentorship
The mentorship component is designed to provide support
in a non-evaluative manner to new teachers. In addition
there are opportunities for experienced teachers to participate. Participation in the mentorship component will be voluntary and will be by mutual agreement of the mentor/
protégé. The relationship of mentor and protégé is intended
to be one of confidence.
Release time will be made available to provide participants
with guidance, feedback, assistance with classroom management, instructional skills and strategies, planning, assessment and evaluation, moral support and other assistance as mutually agreed to by the mentor/protégé.
In-service
As Teacher Development Program participants, you will be
invited to in-service/sharing sessions throughout the year
that focus on our district achievement goals and future directions.
