It’s always exciting when I interview celebrities along the red
carpet and it seemed as though all
of the celebrities were at the Golden
Nugget for Gordie Brown’s event.
The party started in the Rush
Lounge with time to walk the red
carpet and mingle with the celebrities.
Mark Shunock and Becca Kotte
(Rock of Ages-Venetian) were enthusiastic about Gordie.
Mark: “We are here to party with
Gordie. We love you man, thank
you for having us here tonight. You
have to come and see our show already, we have been here three
years. We’re big fans of yours and
can’t wait to having you at
Monday’s Dark in December.
You’re the best.”
SZ: “Your show, Rock of Ages,
plays the best music of the 80’s.”
Mark: “Best rock music ever
written!”
The sexy Melody Sweets entered with John and Sean Scott, the
Tap Dancing Twins (ABSINTHECaesars Palace).
SZ: “I enjoyed Absinthe, the
show features several specialty
acts, some perform dangerous
stunts, but Melody you are not

dangerous.”
Melody: “No, I sing, dance and
strip, that’s what I do. I’m working
on a Christmas single called “Santa
Maybe.”
SZ: “It sounds sexy. John and
Sean, could you describe your style
of tap dancing.”
Sean: “It is very athletic and
rhythmic tap dancing on a small
round stage.”
SZ: “Have you ever seen Gordie
Brown’s show?”
Melody: “No, we haven’t. I
heard a rumor that Gordie is going
to impersonate me with a strip
tease.”
SZ: “I have got to see that.”
Sean and John: “We will be the
first in line!”
The celebrities were filling the
Rush lounge as I continued my
quickies interviews.
Peter Love wore a red T-shirt and
small black hat as he joined me.
SZ: “I like your name, Love, a
great name for an entertainer! You
have a unique show at the Pub in
the Monte Carlo Hotel.”
Peter: “It’s called ‘Welcome to
My Living Room’, the set up on the
stage looks like my living room. It’s
almost as though you are at an MTV
Unplugged. I play all types of music depending on who is in the audience. People can see a small
Broadway-style show, eat, drink
and bring the kids.”
Soap opera fans will know Peter from the Santa Barbara television soap opera which he had that
part before moving to Las Vegas
and now travels back and forth to
act as well.
Although Peter has been friends
with Gordie for years, tonight was
the first time he would see Gordie’s
show.
The World’s Greatest Impressionist Gordie Brown Live appears
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 pm, in
the Showroom, at the Golden Nugget Hotel, downtown.

F.I.O.R.E. unearths
Halloween ahead of time
By the Ghastly Ghost Writer of the Las Vegas Tribune
Photos by Lorraine Thompson and Nelson Sardelli
They did it again. They did what they do best.
Halloween was celebrated a little early this week at a wonderful Halloween Party put together by “Fun Italians Organizing Ridiculous Events” aka, The Nonclub Club F.I.O.R.E.
Vikings, Witches, Vampires, Ghosts, Nurses, Doctors, the Tin
Man and Dorothy, Cowboys, Wonder Woman, Cleopatra,
Marilyn Monroe, a Sultan, a Duke dressed as a Count... or
was it an Accountant... and so many other costumed characters turned out for the most successful Halloween event to
date, for this “unexplainable” group.
As it has in the past, the main showroom of the Italian
American Club served as the venue for the music, fun and
laughter, which is always part of their now, prominent gatherings. As the unofficial Headquarters for F.I.O.R.E., the IAC
handles the monthly madness of this group with the utmost
professionalism, the patience of saints and, perhaps most
importantly great food.
It’s all good fun.
For their next meeting, on November 12th, they will Honor
our Veterans. A great patriotic production is in the works for
that day and it will undoubtedly be a memorable afternoon.
F.I.O.R.E is a private group of friends who meet once a
month and new members require an endorsement from a current member. If you love meeting great people and you have
a terrific sense of humor, you may want to check them out at
www.thenonclubfiore.com.
Be sure to visit their “about us page.”

RESORT AND CASINO
IN LAS VEGAS ANNOUNCE
NEW MANAGEMENT
Light Nightclub and Daylight
Beach Club, two of the premier entertainment establishments in Las
Vegas, are pleased to announce new
management. Both venues will be
run by PLAY Management.
Founded in 2015 and owned and
operated by experienced hospitality executives Colin Comer and
John Pettei, the company’s first
undertaking will be Light Nightclub
and Daylight Beachclub at
Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
PLAY Management assumed control of Light Nightclub on September 23, and will operate Daylight
Beach Club starting in Spring 2016.
Working with Light and Daylight ownership, Comer and Pettei
oversee all aspects of the businesses
as managing partners, while also
developing future projects related
to management, hospitality and
nightlife.
Light Nightclub will continue to
be open on Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday nights from 10:30pm 4am. Daylight Beach Club has recently concluded a successful 2015

Daylight. Before moving to Las
Vegas five years ago, Comer was a
seasoned hospitality executive in
Chicago , serving as Director of
Marketing and Operations for the
LGN Group, owners of some of the
city’s most successful restaurant
and nightlife properties. The Light
Group recruited Comer in late 2010,
where he first served as Director of
Marketing. Within 13 months he
was promoted to Vice President of
Marketing, where he oversaw all
nightlife and daylife marketing
working closely with a robust team
of directors, managers, VIP hosts
and digital marketing specialists.
Comer also took on a large role
in business development at The
Light Group, helping to launch new
projects including Lily Bar &
Lounge at Bellagio, 1 OAK Nightclub at The Mirage and most nota-
bly the Light and Daylight clubs at
Mandalay Bay. This undertaking

Set in seedy 1931 Berlin criminal underground, “A Summons...”

Anderson’s final show Nov. 28
By Jerry Fink
Las Vegas Tribune
After several contract extensions
resulting in a successful elevenmonth run, The Venetian/Palazzo
Resort announced that, “Frank —
The Man, The Music,” staring Bob
Anderson, will perform its final
show in the Palazzo Theater on Saturday, November 28th, 2015.
The closing of the show was a
mutual decision by both parties.
While the Hotel has spent the
greater part of the year reminiscing
about the glory days of the Copa
Room, with the sound and timeless
classics of the legendary artist, it
will begin preparing the stage in
December for a new show to open
in early 2016.
“The Venetian/Palazzo is one of
the great Venues in the World and I
certainly enjoyed performing this
show on the site of the old Sands
Hotel,” Anderson commented.
“The complete staff of the Venetian/
Palazzo Resort made this engagement one of the most memorable
of my career.”
“Frank — The Man, The Music,” staring Bob Anderson, quickly
became ‘the talk of the town’ and
the ‘must see show on the strip’
Anderson’s reviews were nothing
less than spectacular. His 32 piece

MOB MUSEUM PRESENTS
REAL STORY
BEHIND “CASINO”
In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the release of Martin
Scorsese’s award-winning film,
“Casino,” The Mob Museum, the
National Museum of Organized
Crime and Law Enforcement, presents its next Courtroom Conversation: “The Real Story behind ‘Casino.’” The panel discussion among
individuals with firsthand knowledge of the true events on which the
movie was based will take place
inside the Museum’s historic courtroom on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
Organized crime’s control of the
casino industry was waning during
the 1970s, but the Chicago Outfit
kept its grip on the Stardust, Fremont, Marina and Hacienda hotels.
Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, a highly
regarded sports betting expert, was
the Outfit’s man in charge of the
skim. Tony Spilotro was sent to the
desert to protect Rosenthal as he
skimmed millions of dollars of casino profits that were distributed to
several Midwestern organized
crime groups.
Spilotro caused more problems
than he prevented. He demanded a
“street tax” from the town’s criminals and set up a burglary ring that
smashed holes in the walls and roofs
of high-end homes, jewelry stores
and other businesses and attracted
intense scrutiny from federal, state
and local law enforcement agencies.
In 1979, Spilotro ended up in
Nevada’s Black Book, which prevented him from setting foot in a
casino. In 1986, his body and that
of his brother Michael were found
buried in an Indiana cornfield.
Rosenthal, too, was a law enforcement target. He was denied a
state gaming license because of his
underworld ties, but he secretly
operated the Stardust while holding a mid-level title. Rosenthal left
Las Vegas soon after surviving a car
bombing in October 1982. He was
placed in Nevada’s Black Book in
1987 and died in Florida in 2008.
In “Casino,” the Ace Rothstein
character, played by Robert De
Niro, is based on Rosenthal, while
the Nicky Santoro character, played
by Joe Pesci, is based on Spilotro.
Panelists include:
—Oscar Goodman, attorney for
Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Tony
Spilotro
—Jeff Silver, State Gaming
Control Board attorney during
Spilotro/Rosenthal era
—Marc Kaspar, retired FBI
agent who pursued Spilotro for a
decade
—Deborah Richard, undercover
FBI agent who infiltrated the
Spilotro camp
—Gwen Castaldi, television reporter during the Spilotro/
Rosenthal era

although there are very few today
after the attack during Siegfried and
Roy’s famous show.
Dirk Arthur, known for his dangerous illusions, has become the
master of the techniques of working close to wild animals while
keeping them busy.
EXTREME MAGIC is not like
other forms of magic, not only is
the audience thrilled by the illusions, the wild animals are near
them on the stage.
Dirk smoothly makes the transition from announcing his next illusion to calmly and quickly performing the seemingly impossible
feats.
His fans will be happy to hear
about Dirk’s new illusions, including the “Laser Cannon,” and there
is even a helicopter with flames and
other surprises.
He does work closely with the
animals and allows them on the
stage. Those are the moments that
the audience came to see.
You will see bigger illusions and
with the thrills of using wild animals adds even more to Dirk’s
“Wild Magic” show. Dirk owns a
Bengal Tiger, White Bengal Tiger,
Panther, Snow Leopard and Bobcat.
I always enjoyed Dirk’s previous shows in Las Vegas five years
ago and now he returned with even
more amazing illusions.
I wonder if Dirk keeps the wild
animals in his home as Siegfried
and Roy did. Their white tigers
roamed around the rooms.
This fast-paced show interweaves comedy with breathtaking
big cat magic, beautiful dancers and
large-scale effects. Dirk has long
been a leading advocate for the

SOCIAL SECURITY AWARENESS
Five reasons women need to save
more for retirement than men
Given the gender inequality in
retirement accounts, women should
take steps to stash away more cash.
By Maryalene LaPonsie
If you feel like men have an unfair advantage when it comes to retirement, you may be on to something. Financial experts say women
have a slew of factors working
against them when it comes to saving enough money for retirement.
“We’re living longer, spend less
time in the workforce and, on top
of that, we have a gender pay gap,”
says Deborah Graver, senior advisor and partner at Signature Financial Planning in Pittsburgh.
Those are just a few of the reasons women may have to work
harder at saving for their retirement
years. Here’s a rundown of the factors that mean women should be
putting away more cash as well as
three strategies to put more money
in the bank.
Women live longer
than men
On the face of it, living longer
seems like a good thing. However,
more years means more time to run
out of retirement money. Plus, as
Graver notes, “When we’re living
longer, we’re not necessarily living
healthier.”
According to the Social Security
Administration, a woman turning
65 today has an average life expectancy of 86.6 years, which is 2.3
years longer than a man of the same
age whose average life expectancy
is 84.3 years. That not only translates into 2.3 years more of living
expenses, but it could also represent
additional medical and long-term
care expenses. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found
women made up a higher proportion of nursing home residents, and
they typically had longer stays than
men.
Women may spend fewer
years in the workforce
For many women, raising children or caring for elderly parents
means taking time out of the
workforce. A 2005 study from
Harvard Business School estimated
that 43 percent of women with children voluntarily left a job. Among
all women surveyed, 44 percent
said their decision was spurred by
family obligations, such as the need
to provide child care or elder care.
More recently, a 2014 Pew Research Center analysis determined
that 9 percent of highly educated
women (defined as those with at
least a master’s degree) leave the
workforce to care for children.
“A lot of times, these are your
prime income-earning years,” says
Keith Klein, certified financial
planner and owner of Turning
Pointe Wealth Management in
Phoenix. Losing those high-paying
years could result in lower Social
Security payments in retirement.
Taking time out of the workforce
could also mean less money put into
401(k) accounts. Graver notes businesses often have vesting periods
that require workers to remain employed for a certain number of years
or months in order to keep employer
contributions to retirement funds.
“[Women] may be switching jobs
and leaving money on the table,”
she says.
Women may earn
less than men
The reasons behind the gender
pay gap are up for debate, but the
reality is women earn less, on average, than men. The American Association of University Women,
using data from the American Community Survey, found that female
full-time employees only earned 79
percent of the income pulled in by
men last year.
What’s more, the Department of
Labor found women in 2013 were
almost twice as likely as men to
work part time, an arrangement that
undoubtedly leads to lower incomes. Regardless of the reason

which means she needs to save more even more for living expenses.

Medicare open enrollment season is here
By David Sayen
When you shop for a new car,
you don’t just buy the first one you
see, right?
Of course not. You shop around,
looking for the best deal you can
get on a vehicle that fits your driving needs as well as your pocketbook.
Well, it’s the time of year when
you should think about shopping for
a Medicare health or drug plan.
Medicare open enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and runs
through Dec. 7, 2015.
If you have Original Medicare,
meaning that you can choose any
doctor or hospital that accepts
Medicare, you don’t need to think
about open enrollment.
But if you have a Medicare Advantage (Part C) health plan, or a
Medicare (Part D) prescription drug
plan, you may want to see if there’s
a new plan on the market that would
be a better match for you, at a lower
price.
If you’re enrolled in a plan already and you’re happy with it, you
don’t need to do anything. But
Medicare health and drug plans —
which are run by private insurers
under contract to Medicare — can
change from year to year. A plan can
raise its monthly premium or drop

why, lower incomes mean less
money for retirement accounts and
smaller Social Security payments in
retirement.
Women tend to be
more conservative
with their money
Plenty of studies have found that
women are more risk averse than
men. In other words, they are less
likely to put their money in what
could be considered risky investments. Graver says this means some
women might be inclined to skip
stock market funds and instead use
investment tools such as CDs,
which don’t lose money but also
don’t gain much either.
Fortunately, when women do
invest in market-based funds such
as 401(k)s and IRAs, their risk aversion may have a benefit. A 2001
study published in The Quarterly
Journal of Economics found that
men’s aggressive investing style
meant they initiated 45 percent
more trades than women, a strategy
that resulted in lowered returns. A
more recent analysis of data from
brokerage firm Fidelity found that
women and men had almost equal
returns over the past decade.
Women often end
up being caregivers
A final reason women may need
to save more for retirement is they
may be likely to use their money
for expenses other than retirement.
“As women age, the biggest trouble
I see is [they] care for everyone else
except themselves,” Klein says.
The Family Caregiver Alliance
estimates women account for as
many as 68 percent of the nation’s
family and informal caregivers.
Even women who aren’t acting as
caregivers may feel obligated to
help adult children or others.
“Competing financial responsibilities often complicate retirement
planning,” says Douglas Dubitsky,
vice president of product management for Guardian Retirement Solutions. Money that should be used
for retirement may instead get eaten
up as a loan to an adult child or used
to pay for the care of an elderly relative.
Three Ways Women Can Get
More Money in the Bank
The above reasons can place
women at a disadvantage when it
comes to having enough money for
retirement. The solution is for
women to simply save more.
“Hands down, women need to start
saving earlier and take advantage
of the power of compounding assets,” Dubitsky says.
However, if time is not on your
side and you’re closer to retirement
age than college age, these suggestions may help.
1. Start with a budget.
The most important step is to
have a plan in place for your money.
Once you have a budget, you can
identify where funds can be diverted for retirement. Klein says the
key to doing so may be to adjust
how you approach the issue. While
his clients often agree they could
get by on 80 percent of their income, they balk at the idea of cutting 20 percent of their expenses,
even though both scenarios achieve
the same goal. “It’s all a matter of
your point of reference in how you
ask the question,” he says.
2. Get good advice.
Graver shares a story of a divorced client whose ex-husband
told her she wasn’t eligible for any
DAVID SAYEN
a medicine that you need.
So it makes good sense to review
your coverage each year. Make sure
your plan still is a good fit for you
in terms of cost, coverage, and quality. If it isn’t, look for another plan.
During open enrollment, you
can sign up for a Medicare Advantage health plan or Part D prescription drug plan, or switch from one
plan to another. Your new coverage
will take effect Jan. 1, 2016.
How do you shop for a new
plan? There are several ways to do
that.
One is the “Medicare & You”
handbook, which is mailed each fall
to every Medicare household in the
of his Social Security benefits even
though she was. “He lied to her basically,” Graves says. The moral of
the story is to not believe everything
you hear or read about finances.
Follow up with a professional to be
sure you’ve exhausted all your options.
3. Consider working longer.
Although it may not be some
people’s first choice, working
longer is one way to make up for
meager retirement savings. “More
older workers are staying employed
– some by choice, some by necessity,” Dubitsky says. “The longer
you have income coming in, the
greater your financial resources.”
As a bonus, you may be able to delay the start of Social Security
which could lead to greater payments later.
Trying to save more money
when you earn less than your male
co-workers can be difficult, but it’s
not impossible. “It’s what you do
with that money that matters,”
Graver says. “It’s not about keeping up with the Joneses. It’s about
moving yourself forward.”

you live, along with basic information such as premiums, deductibles,

Look for a green button that
says, “Find health & drug plans.”
By clicking on that and plugging in

free, personalized counseling to
people with Medicare. You can
make an appointment to speak with
a SHIP counselor either in-person
or over the phone.
SHIP counselors are welltrained volunteers who often are
enrolled in Medicare themselves, so
they know the issues. They can help
you sort through the many health
and drug plans on the market and
pick one that’s right for you.
To contact Nevada SHIP, call 1800-307-4444.
If you’re enrolled in a Medicare
Advantage plan as of Jan. 1, 2016
but you’re not satisfied with it, you
have a 45-day window to dis-enroll.
Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 14, 2016,
you can drop your plan and return
to Original Medicare. You can also
sign up for a Part D drug plan during that time.
Having trouble paying for your
Part D plan? You may be eligible
for the Extra Help program, which
helps cover your premiums,
deductibles, and co-pays. Medicare
beneficiaries typically save about
$4,000 annually with Extra Help.

With the holiday season in full
swing, you may find yourself exploring those tempting online shopping deals.
The day after Thanksgiving has
nearly become a holiday of its own.
“Black Friday” is the busiest shopping day of the year, with people
lining up at midnight for deals as
they begin the busy holiday shopping season. The Monday after that
has become a virtual holiday, pun
intended. “Cyber Monday” is the
day Internet-savvy people search
for deals, all online.
But, there’s more than one way
to find value on the Internet. For example, Social Security offers many
online services to the public — and
they’re free and secure! Doing business online with Social Security
will also save time. Now that’s an
offer you can’t refuse!
Here are some of the most popular online services you’ll find at
www.socialsecurity.gov. Each site
is safe and secure.
1. The online Social Security
Statement is a hot service that is a
big hit with the millions of people
who’ve used it since its launch.
Your online Statement provides you
with a record of your past earnings,
and it uses those earnings along
with projected earnings for future
years to give you accurate estimates
of future Social Security benefits.

2. The Retirement Estimator is
an easy way to get an instant, personalized estimate of your future
Social Security benefits. Just enter
some basic information and the Estimator will use information on
your Social Security record, along
with what you input, to give you a
benefit estimate on the spot. You
can even experiment with different
scenarios, such as changing your
future earnings and retirement date.
Check it out in English at

Survivor’s insurance
and the day of the dead
By Jason Phelps

The Day of the Dead, which falls
on November 1 of each year, celebrates the accomplishments of the
deceased with lively festivities including dance, decorations, and
food. While the annual holiday may
evoke frightful images, it’s actually
a commemoration of life. Relatives
gather and reminisce about the departed. As the Day of the Dead approaches, let’s honor our loved
ones, and remember the importance
of Social Security survivors insurance.
The loss of a family wage earner
can be emotionally and financially
devastating. However, Social Security survivor benefits, one of the
lesser known of our benefit programs, can help secure your
family’s financial future if you die.
Did you know the value of the survivors benefits you have under Social Security is probably more than
the value of your individual life insurance policy? In fact, 98 of every
100 children could get survivor
benefits if a working parent dies.
Additionally, Social Security pays
more benefits to children than any
other federal program.
By working and paying Social
Security taxes, you’re actually earning credits for survivor benefits.
Those credits could provide financial assistance to your surviving
spouse, surviving divorced spouse,
and unmarried children up to age
19, or at any age if your child became disabled before age 22 and
remains disabled. We could also
pay benefits to your stepchildren,
grandchildren, step-grandchildren,
adopted children, and dependent
parents. The amount that your survivors receive will depend on your
average lifetime earnings.
By creating a secure online my

Social Security Statement to check
your earnings and obtain a survivors benefit estimate. Keep in mind,
this service is only offered in English.
In the unfortunate event of a
family member’s death, please notify Social Security as soon as possible. In most cases, the funeral director will report the death to Social Security. You’ll need to furnish
the funeral director with the
deceased’s Social Security number
so he or she can make the report. If
you need to apply for survivor benefits, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1800-325-0778). You can speak to a
Social Security representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday
through Friday. You can also contact your local Social Security office. You don’t need an appointment
to file for survivor benefits, but if
you call ahead and schedule one, it
may reduce the time you spend
waiting to speak to someone.
This year, as you commence
your Day of the Dead festivities,
take some time and create a my Social Security account online to review your Statement. The best thing
you can do for your family is to prepare as much as possible. Remember that Social Security will be here

Tips for a healthy
Halloween
By Nina Radcliff, MD
Halloween is an exciting time
for all — children and adults. Between dressing up in costumes, collecting and eating candy, and
spending time with family, friends
and neighbors, it creates fun-filled
memories. And this year, Halloween falls on a Saturday, allowing for
extra ghoulish fun. Let’s take a look
at how we can follow some simple
guidelines to keep the festivities
pleasurable and safe for everyone.
Pedestrian Safety
The greatest number of pedestrian injuries amongst our children
occurs on Halloween night. And,
The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) found that
the number of Halloween-related
pedestrian deaths among children
increased four-fold compared to all
other evenings. Some safety tips
include:
—Cross the street only at crosswalks or signal lights
—Walk on sidewalks whenever
possible, or on the far edge of the
road facing traffic to stay safe
—Make sure to look left, then
right, then left again, before crossing, and continue to look as you
cross
—Carry a flashlight and wear
reflective tape on costumes or bags
—Pay attention: Watch for cars
that are turning or backing-up. Do
not text and walk.
Dental Health
Halloween fun and good oral
health do not have to be mutually
exclusive. The American Dental
Association makes several suggestions to decrease the risk of tooth
decay from sweets in their
MouthHealthy Halloween Campaign:
—Eat candy and sweets during
or soon after meals when saliva production increases. Saliva helps to
neutralize acids produced by bacteria as well as rinse away food
particles.
—Avoid hard candy that increases the length of time that sugar
is exposed to our teeth
—Avoid sticky candy that can
stick to our teeth
—Increase water intake to wash
away food particles
Moderating Candy
(Checking and Consumption)
Very important is the fact that
trick-or-treaters and their parents
should be aware that there is always
a possibility that someone may
tamper with Halloween candy. A
responsible adult should always
examine all Halloween treats (in a
place with a bright light) before
anyone eats a piece. Checking Halloween candy includes looking for
evidence of tampering and throwing away treats that appear suspicious or have been handmade by
strangers. Anything that does not
look right, safely dispose of it or
contact police if you find tainted
candy or treats. In addition, caution
your children not to accept any beverages offered to them while trick
and treating.
Halloween is an opportunity for
children, and adults, to stockpile
tons and tons of candy that can last
for days and even weeks. Some tips
to decrease the sugar and calorie
consumption include:
—Don’t trick-or-treat on an
empty stomach. Being hungry with
a bag full of candy is too tempting.
—Hand out toys—and not to
worry, kids will not be disappointed! A study from The Journal
of Nutrition Education and Behavior showed that children are just as
likely to choose toys as they are
candy.
—Hand out non-sugary and
wholesome foods such as granola
bars, canned or dried fruit, popcorn,
pretzels, and apples.
—And if you are hosting a party,
provide a variety of fruit, veggies,
and cheeses. And there are plenty
of creative Halloween recipes from
carrot fingers to “boo”-nana pops.
—Limit candy consumption in
the days after to one, two, or three
treats a day
Costumes
The origin of Halloween, and
costumes, is based on the Celtic
holiday, Samhain, a day where the
ghosts of the dead were able to
mingle with the living. People
would don masks and dress up to
confuse the spirits. Today, costumes
are fun and festive and can range
from scary to comical to fantasy to
representing pop culture. When
choosing costumes, consider:
—Bright and reflective garments to increase visibility when
trick-or-treating. Alternatively, add
reflective tape.
—Avoiding falls by wearing
comfortable shoes and costumes
that are not too long.
—Testing makeup on a small
area of skin to avoid skin reactions
—Flame resistant items, including accessories.

Fire Administration estimates that
every year, there are 11,300 fires
reported to fire departments, 175
injuries, 30 deaths, and $96 million
in property loss over a 3-day period
around Halloween. Some safety tips
to avoid fires include:
–Keeping any candles or flames
away from doorsteps, walkways,
landings, curtains, small children,
and pets.
—Placing them on sturdy tables
—Never leaving open flames

In a world of constant deadlines
it is nice that Halloween celebrations throughout our nation still

Dear Earthtalk: My neighbor
uses Roundup in her yard routinely and tells me it’s harmless to
people and pets, but I’ve heard that
it is carcinogenic. Can you set the
record straight? — Maise
Alexander, New Hope, PA
Monsanto’s Roundup herbicides
contain three key components: the
active ingredient glyphosate, water,
and a soap-like surfactant blend.
The agricultural application of
glyphosate has skyrocketed over
the past 20 years. According to the
U.S. Geological Survey’s “Estimated Agricultural Use for
Glyphosate” map, in 2012 over 250
million pounds of glyphosate were
used on crops in across the country
— a substantial increase from the
less than 22 million pounds used in
1992.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified
the cancer-causing potential of
glyphosate as Category E (“evidence of non-carcinogenicity for
humans”), but the International
Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC) recently re-classified it as
a group 2A “probable” carcinogen.
IARC’s recent evaluation of
glyphosate found “limited evidence
of carcinogenicity in humans for
non-Hodgkin lymphoma” and
“convincing evidence that
glyphosate also can cause cancer in
laboratory animals.”
Monsanto struck back, stating
that the IARC’s conclusion “conflicts with the overwhelming consensus by regulatory bodies and
science organizations around the
world... which have found no evidence of carcinogenicity.”
Monsanto added: “Further, the 2A
classification does not establish a
link between glyphosate and an increase in cancer. ‘Probable’ does
not mean that glyphosate causes
cancer; even at 100 times the exposure that occurs during normal
labeled use glyphosate is not a human health risk.”
In September 2015, in response
to the IARC findings, the California EPA’s Office of Environmental
Health Hazard Assessment
(OEHHA) announced its intent to
list glyphosate as a carcinogen under the state’s Proposition 65 law.
In California, businesses are required to provide “a clear and reasonable warning” before knowingly
and intentionally exposing anyone
to a Proposition 65 listed chemical.
Once a chemical is listed, businesses have a year to comply with
the warning requirements. OEHHA
is accepting public comments until
October 20 on whether glyphosate
should be listed under Proposition
65.
“If they decide to list this chemical [under Proposition 65] and it
survives the inevitable legal challenges, I think it’s possible that every bottle of Roundup or glyphosate
formulation sold in the state of California would have to be labeled as
known...to cause cancer,” Nathan
Donley, a staff scientist with the
Center for Biological Diversity, told
Pacific Standard. “It would be a

Ayutthaya, a Temple in the
Ruins of the Ancient City

There are so many surprises and
so much to see at Ayutthaya’s ruins, the ancient capital of Siam for
417 years! It is amazing how many
buildings are still intact among the
ruins.
The
interesting
Wat
Lokayasutharam Buddhist Temple
sat surrounded by the partial remains of its former walls. The public were allowed inside if they are
dressed properly and after removing their shoes.
Upon entering the temple you
immediately notice the large reclining Buddha which almost filled the
entire room.
Known as the largest Buddha in
Ayutthaya, people still visit the reclining Buddha for worship and
meditation even though the temple
had not been restored. Several
people performed an incense lighting ceremony and kneeled at the
side of the reclining Buddha.
It was one of the few Buddhas
which were not designed in the traditional sitting pose. The Buddha,
called Phra Bhuddhasaiyart, was
made with bricks/stone and covered
with plaster. Its head was placed on
a Lotus and the legs were defined
to show the toes.
The golden cape draped around
the Buddha seemed to add a sense
of dignity in this religious setting.
There was a feeling of serenity
on the tour as thought experiencing another time while the guide
told the stories about their life and
customs.
Ayutthaya was once a large important city destroyed by the Burmese.
There are over 40,000 Buddhi
temples throughout Thailand
(2004).
Just one hour from Bangkok,
while you are in Ayutthaya don’t
miss their forts, temples, museums,
elephant camp, city wall and gate.
Other big stops are the nearby
Summer Palace (Bang Pa-in Palace), the Portuguese Village, the
Japanese Village, and other sights.
Special Events: The Bang Sai
Arts and crafts Center holds a special Loi Krathong evening celebration in November including floats,
a beauty contest, handicraft demonstrations, exhibitions, and
Krathong launching on the river.
