Do you feel the more balls you hit, the more you will improve? If you said YES to either of these questions, then you have the common misconception of many golfers today. “Practicing with a purpose” is a good way to look at improving your golf game because it helps your mind and body develop the correct fundamentals in your swing. For example, in the middle of each lesson on the driving range, I will ask a student “Where are you aiming?” Many times I will get a response such as, “I am not aiming at anything; I am just hitting.” To help the student implement hitting at a target, there are a few options: 1. Set up a golf club or alignment stick on the ground that points at your target, and line up your feet on the line that your club creates. 2. Create a line of sight from your ball to your target. Then pick out a spot on the ground in front of your golf ball (6-12 inches in front of the ball) to help you create a consistent target at which to aim. 3. Make sure to take a break after every few shots to make sure your alignment is correct. 4. Instead of aiming all your practice shots at one particular green, change your targets frequently to get used to different sight lines. If you are interested in more tips or lessons please contact: lf op THE Spencer Brown, PGA, Head Golf Professional [email protected] Golf Operation Golf Course Maintenance Update Wash-outs: What are they and how did they get here? If you have noticed small gullies or trenches filled with sand on the golf course, these are wash-outs. A wash-out occurs during the “grow-in” process of building a golf course. It typically happens when water from rainfall runs off of the side of a slope or mounds and “washes-out” the grass that was planted in that area. How do we fix them? Throughout the summer we will be fertilizing these areas with an organic slow release nitrogen fertilizer. After the fertilizer has been applied we then top-dress the area with sand and level it off. This is not a onetime fix as it takes numerous applications of top-dressing sand to get the areas repaired. Over time, the grass will grow up and across the sand creating a level playing surface.
