A world-class hub for a world-wide industry
Our Cargocenter at Luxembourg Airport sets new standards in airfreight.
Luxembourg is Europe’s 5th largest cargo airport, a major distribution
hub for high tech goods, perishables, livestock and consumer products.
Trucks are a minute away from the open road, and less than 24 hours
from any European city.

Import
9
Imports waste no time on the ground
Fully automated elevating transfer vehicles are fed with incoming ULD’s
from 33 airside doors and inserted directly into the stacker system.
Volume is not a restriction. Our system can hold 1,626 10-ft pallets –
the capacity of more than 40 B747 freighters. Experienced staff then
sorts incoming freight by individual customer needs and destinations
on 35 automated breakdown stations. Through-units speed straight
through to waiting trucks. And your documentation? Our highly trained
staff processes arrival notes, cargo releases and customs clearance electronically. 24 hours a day.

Only 108 metres from truck to aircraft
LuxairCARGO’s large, open warehouse has been specifically designed
to speed a flow of inbound and outbound shipments. As soon as we receive your shipment, our expert pallet builders get down to work. With
years of experience, they can handle any type of freight. Safely and
competently. Pallet weight and contours are checked automatically before entering the fully-automated stacker system. The system groups
them by flight number in pre-selected storage zones, ensuring rapid
airside delivery in the correct loading sequence.
And big is normal in Luxembourg: we have all the equipment to deal
with outsized shipments in our dedicated offsize handling zone, directly
from truck to aircraft if necessary. Documentation is handled equally
efficiently. We accept shipments, check air waybills, issue customs and
flight manifests, and prepare flight and crew documents.

Ready for today’s new traffic mix
By staying ahead of global cargo trends, we can offer customers specia
lised services for today’s mix of air shipments. Compared with a world
average of almost 50% of general cargo, this commodity only represents 20% for LuxairCARGO. Top of a growing list of special cargo are
pharmaceuticals and perishables – such as flowers, fruit, vegetables,
and meat – demanding strict temperature control in the chain between
aircraft and refrigerated road transport. Inbound pallets are broken
down in cool rooms, while outbound perishables await departure in
the stacker system’s thermal cells (0°C to +30°C).
For livestock, our Cargocenter is a fully-qualified EU quarantine station,
with inspection rooms, onsite veterinary services, and holding space
for any animals, from horses to day-old chicks. It also has specially
segregated areas for animal products for non-human consumption
(NHC), the increasing range of restricted articles, and valuables – for
which we provide dedicated storage and 24-hour security.

Built for traffic growth
Our Cargocenter is one of Europe’s most advanced, best-equipped
airfreight handling facilities. The company’s policy of continuous investment ensures customers benefit from the industry’s latest technologies
and techniques. The airport itself has a 4000m runway, Cat IIIb operations, high slot availability and a dedicated cargo ramp for simultaneous
handling of up to 8 wide-bodies. The lack of congestion and short taxiing distances reduce fuel burn and increase handling speed. The infrastructure was planned from the outset to be progressively expanded in
line with traffic growth. With an initial capacity of 500,000 tons a year,
facilities were expanded to 750,000 tons in 2001 with the opening of
our Logistics Center. The 2007 extension of the main warehouse brings
total capacity up to 1 million tons. Inside the terminal, everything is
designed for efficiency and speed. The short distance between truck
and aircraft, open warehouse design, automated stacking and retrieval,
spacious assembly areas, build and break facilities, perishable station
and numerous facilities for special shipments ensure that we can handle
all types of consignments rapidly and safely.

Global hub
19
8 hour average transit time
There’s a reason why Luxembourg is Europe’s 5th largest and fastest growing freight hub. It’s much less congested. Less clogged with
passenger traffic in the air, less cluttered with facilities and urban sprawl
on the ground. So freight moves in and out faster. Average transit time
for cargo is 8 hours; we turnaround B747F’s in 2 hours. There’s another
reason too. LuxairCARGO’s facilities were built to meet the operational
needs of the world’s largest cargo aircraft. 99% of goods here are shipped
by pure freighters; elsewhere in Europe, around 50% of cargo is carried
in belly-holds of passenger aircraft. Handling pure freighters helps us deal
with cargo more easily and move shipments faster. When you add in our
position in the centre of Europe, you can see why more and more carriers
and logistics leaders are choosing Luxembourg. Trucks are a minute away
from the open road, and less than 24 hours from any European city.

When you have more than 200 wide-body and 20 narrow-body movements a week, you need a top of the line information management
system like LUCAS (LuxairCARGO System). LUCAS speeds our handling
flow by automatically managing and monitoring all shipments and
processes. It selects and positions ULDs for each departing aircraft;
monitors storage and tracking for inbound flights; oversees the flow of
goods, documents and data; and optimises resources by undertaking
shift planning and time management.

The 90,000 m² dedicated cargo ramp accommodates up to 8 wide-
bodied (or 7 wide-bodied and 2 narrow-bodied) aircraft. All positions
have built-in ground power, although the apron is large enough for aircraft
to manoeuvre under their own power to any of the stands.
We are the launching handling agent for the B747-8F. LuxairCARGO’s
staff routinely handles four B747Fs simultaneously through the stacker
system, while coordinating aircraft, ramp and terminal activities. Our
main deck loaders – with capacities of up to 30 tons – can be supplemented
by cranes and a 50-ton scale to handle off-size or heavy shipments,
which can be delivered by truck directly to the aircraft.Luxembourg is
also prepared for winter weather. 8 de-icing trucks and snow-removal
equipment ensure minimum disruption during adverse conditions.

Safety and security
Vigilance 24/24h and 360°
Our first concern at LuxairCARGO is safety and security: of staff, visitors,
cargo and aircraft. With continuous CCTV monitoring of all areas –
t erminals, truck doors and the apron – TAPA certification and a decompression chamber accommodating up to 3 ULDs at a time, we ensure
the highest international standards of security. The cargo terminal has
one central restricted-access entry and exit point for staff and visitors,
while outbound trucks are sealed and scrutinized at the gate. High-value
goods are held in secure vaults and dedicated protected storage areas,
supplemented if necessary by guards.
These advanced security systems and procedures are designed not only
to fully meet all international requirements, but also to ensure minimum
disruption to fast and efficient throughput.

Economic role
Luxembourg. A magnet for growth in Europe
As one of Europe’s major cargo gateways, Luxembourg is a vital link in
the long economic chain that stretches around the globe. With its central position and direct air and highway links, it has also become one of
the continent’s major distribution hubs for hi-tech products, perishable
commodities, livestock and consumer goods. Many firms have located
European distribution operations around our terminal. Freight forwarders and logistics specialists are helping them create dedicated vendor
hubs with a range of options, including local storage and highway distribution, component and final assembly, documentation, and pick and
pack services.
