Start your morning at Café Linnalla with ice-cream and coffee. Then it’s down to the water to wade in the outgoing tide. See in the clear water the native oysters, clams, mussels, razor fish and up to 20 different type of seaweeds. Hear the story of the local shellfish industry. Marvel at Vincent Graham, Champion Oyster Opener, as he showcases his craft on the shoreline. Finally, we’ll walk with our donkey carrying our fish to Linnane’s Lobster Bar for a bowl of fish chowder. Time: 11am – 12.30 pm. FAMILY EVENT Wednesday 20th May Morning - ‘Meet the Producer’ Tickle Your Tastebuds on a Traditional Farm MEET producers Stephen & Eva Hegarty of Burren Free Range Pork Farm, Kilfenora, Visit a small traditional eco farm situated a stone-throw from the well preserved Tullagh earthen ringfort. Free range rare breed Saddleback pigs graze the fields as well as cows, donkeys, chickens and ducks. On the smallholding, no chemicals are used and eco-friendly methods and animal welfare are key. You will learn how farming was done in the Iron Age era compared to today’s way. A leisurely stroll to the Ringfort where you get to imagine how people farmed and lived. A handful of other remains of ringforts dotted around the landscape nearby will be pointed out. Our former neighbour, who was one of the forming members of the Kilfenora Ceili Band is a beautiful stone ruin now and is seen from the road. A tasting plate of farm to fork produce to tickle the taste buds and a nice cup of tea is included to the sounds of the traditional Ceili music of Kilfenora Ceili Band. Anybody who wants to shake a leg or stamp their feet is welcome! Burren Gold is a firm-textured, Gouda style farmhouse cheese with a rich creamy taste and, as the name suggests, a wonderful yellow-golden hue. It is made, in the traditional way, at the Aillwee Farm Shop. The cow’s milk used to make Burren Gold comes from a neighbouring Friesian Dairy farm. The cows graze on only unique nutrient rich grasses of The Burren. Available in six different flavours – Plain, Garlic & Nettle, Smoked, Black Pepper, Cumin and Piri Piri – Burren Gold can be tasted every day at our Farm Shop. Our cheesemaker, Diarmuid, along with Raquel and Maggie will explain how Burren Gold Cheese is made and will love to answer any questions our visitors have. The savoury side of it will be available as well with barbecued delicacies and much more. 12pm Opening of the Festival – John McKenna from Guides.ie will be opening the festival with a short talk. John and his wife Sally have had an immense influence on the food scene in Ireland not only with their guide books and online guide. He has won numerous awards for his food writing, including a series of Glenfiddich Awards, the Andre Simon Special Award and the Slow Food Ireland Media Award. A long-time writer for the Irish Times, contributor to RTE television and news programmes, John also has written for various international publications, including The Art of Eating. He is regarded as a leading commentator on Irish food. 12.30pm Cookery Demo – by Adrian Martin. Young celebrity chef Adrian Martin will be giving a cookery demo in our show kitchen. He has made regular appearances as a chef on TV3’s “Late Lunch” show as you can see here. 1pm Demo – “Bean to Bar Chocolate Revolution with Hazel Mountain Chocolate” Kasha Connolly from Hazel Mountain Chocolate will show you how a cocoa bean is transformed into chocolate. 1.30pm Talk & Demo – “The Food Producer, The Butcher, The Chef“. Donal Monaghan from Gleninagh Buren Lamb, JP McMahon from Anair (Galway), Neil Hawes Crafts Butcher in Lisdoonvarna will talk about farming, demonstrate how to get the best cuts and what to do with the meat. 1.45pm Book Launch – details to be announced 3pm Talk, Demo & Tasting – “All things Oysters“. The savoury side of it will be available as well with barbecued delicacies and much more. 12pm Talk – “Creative Gardening with a Menu in Mind” Join Kitty Scully for a fun and informative session on growing seasonal garden delights successfully. Kitty will talk about her role as Head Kitchen Gardener in Airfield House in Dundrum and the joys and tribulations of managing a 3 acre food garden that has over 100,00 visitors annually and supplies a busy restaurant. Airfield’s Food Garden is not solely about production as it is also endeavours to show case the range of crops that grow in Ireland while looking pretty as well. Best known for her RTÉ 1 series ‘How to Create a Garden’, Kitty also writes a weekly vegetable gardening and foraging column for the Irish Examiner. In 2009, gaelic speaking Kitty contributed to TG4’s gardening programme, ‘An Garraí Glas’, and in 2010 she visited community gardens around Ireland, co-presenting RTÉ’s ‘Corrigan Cooks Naturally’. 1pm Demo – “How to source seasonal local food” are subject to change) Cillian Murphy is the owner of Murphy Black’s Pub in Kilkee. He is also the chairman of Loop Head Tourism, which is a very recent initiative that surprised everybody by winning the Irish Times top holiday destinatins award. Cillian will be showcasing what he does, and how he sources his seasonal foods locally. 2pm Inspirational Talk – by John McKenna from guides.ie will be talking about the Snail of Approval. 3pm Cookery Demo – Derry Clarke from Michelin star restaunt L’Ecrivain, Dublin explains seafood presented by Burren Seafood, Newquay. Oysters, lobster, mussel, and Burren Smokehouse Irish Organic Salmon will be on the “menu”.
