What’s New at the Museum...
== Can you help another Museum Member? If you have
a Flagler Beach flag purchased from the Museum around
the time of our Grand Opening in 2001 -- and are willing
to part with it, contact Angie Black at 517-2025.
== Many thanks to former Flagler Beach Police Chief
Charles “Bub” Robson who has donated several new
photographs to the Museum. Some show the police officers
in the 1970s and 1980; others show former police station
locations which include the current City Hall building and
the Wickline Center. There is also a photograph of the city’s
first police car. All are now on display.
History Tidbit: Did You Know Rudolph the Reindeer is 70?!
Montgomery Ward copywriter Robert L. May introduces
a reindeer with an unusual
talent to American cildren
when the store hands
out more than two million
copies of his story verse
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer” in December
1939. Eight years later,
Montgomery Ward gives
May the rights to the tale of
Rudolph’s foggly flight; the reindeer soars to the top of the
music charts in 1949 (Rudy’s 10th birthday!) after Gene
Autry records a song abouthim written by May’s brother-inlaw Johnny Marks. An animated television special, aired
annually since 1964, ensures that Rudolph will “go down
in his-tor-ee.” ~Smithsonian (Magazine)
== Also thank you to Clara Ferrara who donated two Military
Payment Certificates used during WWII as well as a card
explaining the Civil Defense siren warnings.
== We also have several new photographs of the downtown
area in the 1950s. Thank you to Rob Creal and others who
donated those for our displays.
== Hooray! We are all happy to have gotten through this
year’s hurricane season quietly. If you haven’t yet perused
the display of newspaper articles about past area hurricanes,
waterspouts, and northeasters, hurry in now.
== Looking ahead. Early in the new year, we will rotate in
a new Marineland display. Call 517-2025 for dates.

WE TREASURE OUR VOLUNTEERS
N ote Fr om t he Director: Mus e um Ga l a T h a n k Yo u s !
If you know someone below, thank them -- and have them
tell you how you can join in on next year’s fun. If you are a
customer at any of the businesses on the opposite page, take
a minute to thank them. If you aren’t a customer, now is a great
time to stop by and see what their business is all about! Join
me as we thank and appreciate them all. ~Teri Pruden
So much happens behind the scenes to keep the Museum
doors open. Members know this space usually features a docent or volunteer who has generously shared their time and
expertise with us. We like to get to know them and encourage
others to join the fun.
But each winter, we use the space for a “group hug” to
thank those who helped make the Museum’s Annual Gala a
success. Along with donations, memberships, and grants, the
gala is a big part of our year’s fundraising. Below are those
who gave of their time or made in-kind donations. On the opposite page, are Gala Sponsors along with members, friends,
and businesses who made cash or silent auction donations.

Congratulations to Blue Restaurant
Winners of Halifax Uncorked!
Blue Restaurant has been the go-to caterer for the Museum Gala
committee the past three years. Just before Thanksgiving and just
one month after the Gala, they participated in Halifax Uncorked, the
Daytona Beach International Festival of Food & Wine. The only
Flagler County restaurant to be included in the competitive festival,
Blue brought home the Top Restaurant award. Congratulations
Blue for doing Flagler County and Flagler Beach proud!
Not only did Vern supply this winning photo of
himself from the 1980s, he was the Gala’s DJ
extraordinaire! Vern and his company, Pyramid
DJ’s, have been major participants in the
festivities for the past 5 years! Check out Vern’s

Many Thanks to Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens for 5 years of
Complimentary Limo Service to Museum Galas!
A big bonus of buying Gala tickets early has been that those attendees
were entered in a drawing to win a stylish limo ride to and from the event
courtesy of Craig Flagler Palms. This year’s winner donated the luxurious
chauffered limousine transportation to long-time Museum docent Ella Shriver
and her friend Nancy Bixon. Joining them was Gala Committee Member Beth
Mount with her mom Gladys, and Beth’s friends, Carol & Russ Walker, who
come in from Gainesville every year for the Museum Gala. Congratulations
to the winners and many thanks to Allen Whetsell for his generosity over
the years.

Three Ways to “Wrap” Up Your Gift Giving for the Holidays!
What do you give the person who already has it all? We suggest a Museum membership starting as low as $12 up to any amount you choose. They’ll
receive all of the great benefits that you do and giving a one year membership is
a gift to them, a gift to you, and a gift to the Museum! Ideal for lifelong residents
as well as newcomers to Flagler Beach, buy one today and get a complimentary
gift of thanks from the Museum. Just use the coupon on page 4 or come in. If
requested, we can provide a Gift Card and newsletter to start things off!
The incredible photo at left of
the last space shuttle night launch
in August was taken by Museum 1st VP Rob Creal. This stunning picture
is now for sale and on display as part of the Museum’s theme: “Stone Age
to the Space Age.” The photo is available framed $50 or unframed $20
and members can purchase them at a discounted $40 and $15.
Wondering how to “wrap” a Museum membership? How about
including one of our fabulous Museum tapestries featuring historic landmarks of Flagler Beach. The washable cotton throws are light enough
for the beach, warm enough for winter and charming enough to decorate
your furniture or walls. Our gift to you is that Museum Members get an
additional discount on the already reasonably priced throws.
“Flagler Pier through the Years” is a smaller, lighter mini-throw perfect
for laps, chairs or kids. The throw is $30.00 for Museum members and
$35.00 for non-members. It features three photo renditions of Flagler
Pier buildings from 1925 to today. (Photo: Displayed by Shelley & Leif
Chapman.)
“Landmarks of Flagler Beach” is perfect for cold winter evenings; the
full size tapestry is $40.00 for members and $45.00 for non-members.

Flagler County Places - How They Began - Part 1
~by Sisco Deen
who had worked for Isaac’s father in Georgia, was also the president
of the St. John’s Park Development Company in the western part
of now Flagler County.
After working several years for George Deen, later a Georgia
State Senator, they purchased a 30,000 acre tract of land from him
and set up their own camp and turpentine operation. They were successful in the turpentine business but realized that some good farm
land was in the acreage they now held. Having observed the land
sale promotion in St. John’s Park, in 1909 they formed the Bunnell
Development Company. They had real estate offices here and in
Chicago where train trips were arranged for potential buyers from
the North to visit this area.
Bunnell Stop was first incorporated as a town on June 2, 1911,
when the state legislature passed a special act of incorporation. The
act contained a faulty description of boundary lines and the place did
Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of history articles written by Pioneer Family descendant Sisco Deen who serves on the
Executive Board of the Flagler County Historical Society. These
excerpts were first prepared in July 2008 for the Palm Coast Historical Society where Sisco is also a board member. History buffs
can also check out his website at www.flaglercountyfamilies.com
Andalusia
“Bordering on beautiful Crescent Lake and in the midst of twentyfive thousand acres of the finest farming land in Florida, reposes the
town site of Andalusia (about 15 miles west of Bunnell on SR 100),
with one of the prospects of becoming an agriculture center in this
land of sunshine. We find here 1500 acres of developed farms with
soil equal to any in Florida. Every variety of vegetable and citrus fruit
can be found growing in fertile fields and groves and developers will
plant between two hundred and fifty acres in crops...” ~The Flagler
Tribune, February 18, 1926. There is no settlement there today, just
a few farm houses, and a state road sign saying Andalusia.
Beverly Beach
The Town of Beverly Beach is located three miles north of Flagler
Beach and was incorporated July 1955. There were ten residents
living in the community at the time. The subdivision was developed
by Claude Grady Varn in 1947 and was given the name, “Beverly
Beach” by Mr. Varn.
The first town commission meeting was conducted July 6, 1955.
Stanley Farnsworth was elected the town’s first mayor. Town Commissioners elected were Robert Q. Elfstrom; Vivian Elfstrom, Cora
Williams, Edna Farnsworth and Opha M. Martin. Ward Martin was
appointed Town Clerk and Robert E. Williams was appointed Town
Marshall. Claude G. Varn was appointed attorney.
Bimini
“Between Espanola and Andalusia, lays a fertile farming section
known as Bimini and developed by some of the leading agriculturists
who have made Florida their home. The soil here is adaptable to
almost any product or citrus fruit and during the entire year produce
is shipped both north and south by way of the East Coast Railroad
which runs but a few miles east of the community.
J. C. Parkhill was among the first developers of this part of the
county and was followed by such developers as Messrs. Duttenhaver,
Charles Rinker, and the late J. F Whitton. Bimini comprises about
7,000 acres of land...” ~ The Flagler Tribune, February 18, 1926.
not function as a town until two years later when a special law was
passed granting them a charter. Appointed as councilmen by the
governor were; Isaac I Moody, Jr, George Moody (Isaac’s brother),
William Edgar (Ed) Johnson, James Frank Lambert, William H
Cochran and W.C. Heath, mayor.
Dinner Island
Dinner Island, was a town a few miles north west of Espanola and
was a center for agricultural products and citrus fruit at one time.
Bulow
“A post office and a few houses on the Old Dixie Highway known
as Bulow, is all that is left of a thriving community settled in 1940 by
C. W. Bulow. It was on the banks of Haulover Creek at that time which is now on the East Coast Canal. Here Bulow and his heirs,
the Staling family, planted vineyards and sugar cane. This is in the
heart of the old Spanish sugar mill district...” ~ The Flagler Tribune,
February 18, 1926.

Bunnell
Toward the latter part of 1897, Alvah Alonzo Bunnell, 43,
established a sawmill and later a store next to the railroad in the
area of present day Flagler County known as Bunnell. There was
no town at that time. To identify the train stop for mail and to let off
passengers, it was called Bunnell Stop.
About 1898, two young bachelors, Isaac I Moody, Jr, 24, of
Appling County, Georgia and Major James Frank Lambert, 36, of
South Carolina, arrived in what is now Flagler County, Florida.
They came to work for George W. Deen who had a large turpentine business in St Johns Park, west of Bunnell Stop. George,
