In March, the love of art continues with several key events: The Las
Cruces Arts Fair, in its fifth year, promises to bring many fine visual
artists to the Las Cruces Convention Center in mid-March. And music
lovers should note that on March 21st, the Rio Grande Theatre will
welcome the folk music icon Peter Yarrow, of “Peter, Paul & Mary”
fame. For tickets and information on all our events, please visit www.
RioGrandeTheatre.com
And while the rest of the country continues to dig out of a deep-freeze,
here in Las Cruces we welcome the first buds of spring and bless the
March days that are not windy. Stay artful.

Doña Ana Arts Council’s Volunteer of the Month ~
DENISE SIMMONS
Denise Simmons is a great volunteer. Although she is still
working for a local insurance agency, she is always willing to
help. She regularly ushers at the Rio Grande Theatre and
she is willing to do whatever needs to be done. She has
ushered, scanned tickets and for Cirque Zuma Zuma, she
sold merchandise for the performers! She is helping with the
Las Cruces Arts Fair as a Co-Chair for the Artist Check In
and will help out in several volunteer positions over the week
end at the Arts Fair. The Arts Council couldn’t do what we do
without counting on volunteers like Denise. We really appreciate
all our volunteers! If you would like to volunteer to help at the Las
Cruces Arts Fair (March 13, 14 & 15) at the Las Cruces Convention Center or at the
Rio Grande Theatre, call 575-523-6403 and we will sign you up.

The Rio Grande Theatre
Kicks Off 10th Anniversary Year with
Technical Upgrades
and Celebration Plans!
In September 2005, the 79-year-old Rio Grande Theatre
began the next stage in its evolution as an entertainment
and cultural center in the heart of Las Cruces. 2015 marks
the 10-year anniversary of the monumental effort by the
Doña Ana Arts Council to restore the historic landmark,
with generous support from New Mexico state legislators,
the City of Las Cruces and the community at large. To celebrate this milestone achievement, the Arts Council will
host a gala celebration on September 12, 2015. The City of
Las Cruces also has been pulling out all the stops by giving
the Rio Grande Theatre a much-needed lighting upgrade, a
brand new projector and a new surround sound system.
“This is a big year for the Rio Grande Theatre,” said Executive Director for the Doña Ana Arts Council Kathleen
Albers. “It started the downtown revitalization and now
we’re kicking it up a few more notches. We’ve got a new
management agreement in place with the City and it’s a
true partnership. We’ve been recognized as a cultural icon
by Heritage Hotels & Resorts and we are partnering with
Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces to make the theatre a tourist
destination. We just got the new lighting system and a high
definition projector, which are both top of the line. We can
now say we really are “state of the art” and are competitive
with some of the best venues in the state. The fact that it’s
happening in 2015, which coincides with our tenth anniversary, is very exciting.”
The recently completed upgrade to the lighting system included moving 12 lights from the catwalk above the auditorium, along with ten more lights that had been held in
reserve, to a new electrical grid now located on the balcony
facade. “We’ve been wanting to do this for years,” said
Technical Coordinator Bruce Ven. “We really needed low
profile lighting, because any time someone wore a hat on
stage, their faces would be in shadow.”
The addition of an Electronic Theater Control (ETC) lighting system in the control booth will allow for lighting technicians to program shows in advance, reconfigure and save
files and even transfer files from other locations.
5
“Some performers and groups have all of their lighting
cues saved on a laptop or flash drive, so now they can send
it to us and we can plug it right in,” Ven said. “This is saving
us hours of set up time. We used to have to compromise a
lot, but this is easier and more intuitive, so we can take our
shows to the next level. If we used to be a Dodge, we are
now a Cadillac.”
“It was a long time coming,” Albers said. “We started working on this two years ago after we had to go dark for a couple weeks and ship our old Strand lighting system off to be
repaired. It was outdated and we couldn’t get parts for it.
We realized we were vulnerable and might need to cancel
shows. We knew we had to upgrade, so we requested the
City add it into their capital improvement plan, and they
made it a priority. Now we’re set for another ten years or
more.”
The projector is also a fresh addition, put into place just in
time for the premiere screening of PRC Productions’ locally-made feature film “Truth” on February 27th. Mounted
on the balcony facade, just below the new lighting grid, it is
perfectly calibrated for correct focal length, a problem that
plagued the theater with the old projector. Able to project
films in High Definition, the result is a crisp, clean image
which hasn’t been seen in the theater since its hey day as the
Spotlight on the
Rio Grande Theatre
premiere cinema in Las Cruces.
According to Ven, the new addition is “a high definition
projector, a 1080, that accepts all three components: PCs,
DVD and Blu-Ray players with HDMI. The surround
sound system is also new. We don’t have to run the audio
through the house system, which is only in stereo. Films
nowadays aren’t filmed in stereo; they’re all in surround
sound. Finally we can make them sound the way they’re
supposed to.”
In addition to the upgrades, the Arts Council is moving the
annual spring Community Arts Awards Gala to the fall,
in order to coincide with the 10th Anniversary celebration. Taking place on September 12th with a dinner and
awards ceremony honoring leaders in the arts community
outside on Main Street, this year’s event will be followed
by a headline show still to be determined inside the theater.

“We wanted to make this year special by combining the
awards ceremony with the 10 year anniversary of the Rio
Grande Theatre’s re-opening,” Albers said. “The renovation
of the Rio Grande Theatre really was the kick-off for the
entire downtown revitalization. I really want to say kudos
to the city councilors and to the city staff for recognizing the
importance of this building to the rest of the city. There is a
lot of wonderful stuff happening all around us downtown,
but we want the community to know we are continuing to up
our game, too. What better way to do that than to combine
all those efforts in one big celebration on Main Street.”
Originally built in 1926 as a vaudeville theatre and premiere
movie palace, the Rio Grande Theatre closed in 1997, only
to be rescued from obscurity by the Doña Ana Arts Council, then renovated and reopened on September 16, 2005
by a community pulling together to restore their beloved
historic landmark. The theatre now operates as a full-service, 426-seat performance facility, playing host to a variety
of performers, from children’s theatre and dance recitals to
legendary musicians and national touring groups. The only
remaining two-story adobe theatre in the country, the Rio
Grande Theatre has been placed on the State Register of
Cultural Properties and the National Registry of Historic
Places. It continues to be a social hub of activity in southern
New Mexico. For more information, visit www.RioGrandeTheatre.com or call (575) 523-6403.

The Doña Ana Arts Council Continues
its 2014/2015 Performance Series
with Indie Folk Siblings
The Hunts on Saturday, March 7
The Doña Ana Arts Council proudly continues the
2014/2015 Performance Series with Chesapeake, Virginia-based indie folk band The Hunts. Made up of seven
brothers and sisters playing a multitude of instruments,
including fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, accordion, keyboards and percussion, The Hunts have quickly
made a name for themselves with their upbeat, harmonylaced take on alternative folk. The Hunts will bring their
uniquely collaborative sensibilities to the Rio Grande Theatre stage, Saturday, March 7, 2015. Ranging in ages from
16 to 24, twin sisters Jenni and Jessi and their five brothers
Josh, Jonathan, Jordan, Justin and Jamison all learned to
sing and play violin at a very young age and spent much
of their childhood performing throughout their community. After widening their following and playing theaters
and festivals around the country – all the while teaching
themselves to play a diverse array of instruments – they
began experimenting with songwriting and soon brought
to life a batch of songs that reveal their sophisticated sense
of melody and youthful innocence. Their first full album is
scheduled for release by Cherrytree Records/Interscope in
the spring of 2015.
The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Main Street,
in Las Cruces. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance
begins at 7:30 p.m. Reserved seat tickets are $32.25 (main

Roy W. Dean Spring Grant: The Film Grant Where You Win Even If You Lose
Aspiring filmmakers may want to investigate the Roy W. Dean Spring Grant, which is now accepting applications. The deadline for grant applications is April 30th. The winner receives $25,000 in film goods, services and funds to get their film started or completed. The grant seeks short films,
documentaries, features or series that are unique and make a contribution to society. Now, in its 23rd year, the cash portion of the grant has increased
to $3,500. The winner will receive about $25,000 in goods and services from Edgewise, Silver Sound, Nice shoes, Carmen Borgia and many more
wonderful organizations who give back to filmmakers through the grant.
When asked what makes the Roy W. Dean Spring Grant unique, Cruz Ramos, Film Liaison for the City of Las Cruces noted that “While filmmakers are
primarily focused on making their creative ideas come to life, they do spend considerable time and energy managing, promoting and seeking funding
for their worthy projects. The Roy W. Dean Grant is truly a an opportunity for filmmakers in that it seeks to help all grant applicants that are about to
embark on a film project or in the middle of one - to more effectively realize their goal of getting their film made.” Mr. Ramos added, “There may be
one winner, but all applicants benefit in that they’ll be able to tap into Carole Dean’s formidable experience in film funding and much more. Even if
you don’t win, you still end up ahead.” Ramos additionally explained that the City will endeavor to bring funding opportunities like the Roy W. Dean
Spring Grant to the attention of aspiring filmmakers when they arise.
Each applicant gets a consultation from Carole Dean, president of From the Heart Productions, and author of the bestselling- book, “The Art of Film
Funding”. With over 20 years’ experience judging films, mentoring filmmakers, and helping films get funded, she will give the applicants advice on
improving their story, their pitch, and their project. Application and guidelines: www.fromtheheartproductions.com. Contact: (805) 984-0098.

The Rail Readers Book Club meets at the Las Cruces
Railroad Museum at 11:00 am on the 3rd Wednesday of
each month. On March 18 we will discuss “Mrs. Queen
Takes the Train,” written by William Kuhn. What happens
when The Queen of England decides to walk away from
her palace without telling anyone? Staff are thrown into a
tizzy, and a furtive attempt is begun to find and retrieve her
without alerting the public or national security. The search
brings together several previously antagonistic coworkers
and sparks unlikely friendships and romances. Meanwhile,
The Queen is enjoying the anonymity of traveling alone
on a train, talking with other commuters about body piercings and movies. The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla
Street, at the intersection of Las Cruces Ave.
Brown Bag Lunch Lecture
“The Short Lived Short Lines”
presented by Joe Gill
The Las Cruces Railroad Museum will host a lecture at
noon on Tuesday, March 10. New Mexico’s rich railroading history included many different railroad companies.
Railroads with less than 100 miles of track were designated short lines. Many of these railroad companies were
only in existence for a few years, but each has a unique and
fascinating story. Joseph E. Gill will discuss some of the
early short lines railroads in Grant County, New Mexico.
Gil has a Master’s of Science in Counseling from San Bernardino State University in California. His father worked
for the Santa Fe Railroad for 39 years and this fostered
Joe’s life-long interest in railroads and their history. Light
refreshments served. For more information, please call
647-4480. The museum is located at 351 N. Mesilla Street,
at the intersection of Las Cruces Ave.

Applications Open for Railyard Arts Pilot Project
The Railyard Arts Committee is accepting applications for temporary
public artworks to be installed in designated areas on the Railyard Park +
Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Railyard is a “Cohesive Urban Art
Environment,” designed and intended as a “work of art in itself.” Artists,
organizations and collaborative, creative teams are encouraged to propose
projects, particularly those that respond to the landscape of the Railyard
Park + Plaza and that emphasize community engagement and participation. Collaborations across disciplines of artists, scientists, historians,
sociologists, etc. are especially encouraged, and various art forms from
visual to performing arts are welcome. Projects will be temporary in nature
and must be able to be installed and removed from the Railyard within
a six month period. How To Apply: New Mexico Artists are invited to
complete an online application form on the Railyard Stewards’ website:
http://www.railyardpark.org/programs/railyard-art-project/. Artists should
select an eligible area of the Railyard open-space appropriate to their project and describe the project in detail. Photos of the art may be uploaded to
the application. Considerations for approval of projects include: quality;
availability of space/appropriate timing; context and familiarity with the
proposed site; practical viability; potential for community engagement and
cultural/educational enrichment. Projects must be temporary in nature, and
fully funded. Guidelines for the Railyard Art Project Pilot Program, as well
as detailed maps of the sites available for art installation, can be viewed on
the Railyard Stewards website as part of the application. The Railyard Arts
Committee, made up of community members involved in public art and
holding Railyard expertise, will select and schedule the temporary public
art projects in the Railyard Park + Plaza and will oversee the installation
and implementation of all projects. The Railyard Arts Committee is under
the auspices of The Railyard Stewards, a local organization working in
partnership with the City of Santa Fe in a unique care, conservation and
education effort to encourage residents to actively participate in the Railyard Park + Plaza.
