If you are aware of anybody who is not planning to rejoin, please have them call me to confirm their withdrawal. Thank you. Jenny Roberta’s Corner Well, at this moment I am sitting in the kitchen watching a drain man snake my drains in the kitchen. I have had water showing up in the basement at the bottom of the stairs. I think they have found the problem. Not without making a mess downstairs but that is a good thing so now we can get back to normal, hopefully soon. The rugs and the ceiling are damaged so it goes on and on. This month the Management Team had a nice get together for the members of the executive who are retiring this year. We met at the lovely home of Marg and Jack Markham. A good time was had by all, a beautiful evening sitting on a great balcony looking over the Humber River. Jack and Marg served delicious finger foods, fancy sandwiches etc . They are sharing one of their recipes today as our recipe this month. Thanks Jack and Marg for a lovely evening. Our Meet and Mingle this month was a lovely affair. We had great music, wonderful food. All in all a fun evening with great friends. JACK & MARG’S RECIPE - BUNWICHES 4 1 2 10 1 1 Boiled Eggs-cubed Small Velveeta Cheese-cubed Celery Stalks-cut fine Olives-sliced can Tuna(drained) cup mayonnaise salt pepper & rolls Mix in a bowl the first four ingredients and then add the Tuna, Mayo, salt & pepper. Mix well and place on top of cut rolls and place on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. This is a good recipe for a lunch with a salad or for a cocktail party all you have to do is alter the size of the rolls from regular hamburg buns to mini buns. Rich and Carole Walking Club James Rayner 416-233-1909 th th The walking group, the dates for October are:Thursday the 13 & Wednesday the 26 for October UPCOMING SPEAKERS November 22, 2016 Thanh Campbell, Author of “Orphan 32” 5 The Probus Club of Kingsway/Islington NEWSLETTER October 2016 Fragmented Media Issue #96 Tayler Parnaby I remember ‘way back to my childhood when CFRB was the family radio station, especially at Gordon Sinclair’s newscast times. It was a family ritual to sit down at ten to twelve and ten to six to hear Sinclair reporting the news and giving his comments. It was akin to ranting but very entertaining. Sometimes on the same station, we would hear news reports from some reporter named Taylor Parnaby who gave concise, to the point, reports, signing off for CFRB radio and, later, Newsradio. How fascinating it was, then, to hear Taylor Parnaby speak to the Probus club this month almost half a century after first hearing his name. As an introduction to his talk, Taylor gave us his credentials as a citizen of Etobicoke, having lived on Wilgar Road and Poplar Heights Drive. He then took us back to the beginning of his reporting career in Kingston, ON, where he was news director for a small radio station that only had a typewriter and used an outside teletype machine. As he regularly read the Globe and Mail for news information, he got himself the position of G & M correspondent for Eastern Ontario. While he was in Kingston, JFK was assassinated and he pioneered the idea of injecting sound bites into the news broadcast by putting his radio, carrying the CBS programming, in front of his microphone. When the Newsradio service started, he moved to Ottawa and joined the National Press Gallery where he enjoyed many trips around the world. He also helped pioneer a national teletype service and, later, a countrywide satellite service. One of his more notable adventures was to fly to Britain to give coverage to the death of Lady Diana. There, he wheedled an overseas connection from the supervisor of British Telecom by supplying cigarettes and Coca-Cola to him, thus beating the CBC and their coverage by three days! Taylor is proud of his reporting style which tells the story as it is, granting no favours nor twisting of facts to fit any agenda. His concern is that currently the public is confronted with what he called “fragmented media”, i.e., there are so many sources of information and it is so instantaneous that it is increasingly difficult to sort fact from fiction, embroidering, and slanted reporting. In the “good old days”, reporters like him would be dispatched to the scene of the story and they would investigate on their own and report back to their audience. Today most so-called reporting is someone standing outside the studio, giving a summary of what the wire services have provided. If we are lucky, there is a 10-second sound bite which might accurately reflect the story or could be something taken out of context to prove a certain point of view. As he said, the information we get is so watered down that it is irrelevant to the moment. So, are the media* becoming more entertainment rather than news sources? Yes and No. Taylor was asked where he himself gets information that is reliable. Well, it certainly is not the Internet or Facebook or Twitter. He urged the listeners to be selective in what sources they choose to obtain information. He gave credit to the CBC for doing an admirable job. Personally, he reads the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the Washington Post and the New York Times. When selecting one’s own personal news sources, he suggested avoiding corporately owned sources such as Bell Media and Rogers, as they are more interested in the bottom line than accurate reporting. The absolutely last source to trust for accuracy and in-depth reporting is Wikipedia. (*I trust the reader will forgive me if I sound pedantic, but the word “media” is a Latin word in the plural, the singular being “medium”, and, therefore, should use a plural verb. Radio is one medium, as is television. Together, they are media.)
