arrah’s Ak-Chin guests enjoyed two days of
music when Jo Dee Messina and The Wailers
performed in The Lounge during the August 7th
weekend.
Messina stepped onto the stage Friday night for
one show, entertaining guests with her country hits
and new music off her latest CD, “Me.” In Arizona
for a trio of shows, her Lounge performance was
hampered by a cold. Coughing and voice struggling
at first, Messina was able to find a comfortable vocal
range performing amazingly to the capacity filled
audience.
As promised, Messina performed her hits. “Bye,
bye,” “Bring on the Rain,” “Stand Beside Me,” were
mixed in with new songs “Peace Sign” and “Me.”
The set list also included “Lesson in Leavin,” “I’m
Alright,” and “Heads Carolina, Tails California.”
Sharing stories of her life in between songs, it was
interacting with the audience that added a song not
on the set list. Her song “Because You Loved Me,”
as the title suggests, was sung to a couple celebrating
thirty years of marriage attending the show.
The next night, The Lounge became a “Punky Reggae
Party” as The Wailers took the stage for a nearly
two hour show. Ak-Chin fans took over a section,
dancing and singing along to the music of the late
Bob Marley. The music has continued with original
Wailer Aston “The Birdman” Barrett, Sr., and new
members of The Wailers.
Performing music that has sold 250 million albums
worldwide, the music continues to resonate with
fans. “Jammin,’” “One Love,” and “Three Little

Ak-Chin Indian Community
announces MulƟ-Million Dollar
Expansion of Harrah’s Ak-Chin
Casino
(Maricopa, Ariz.) – Chairman Louis J. Manuel,
Jr., members of the Ak-Chin Indian Community
Tribal Council as well as representatives from
the Community recently announced plans for
a multi-million dollar expansion at Harrah’s
Ak-Chin Casino. With initial work to begin
in spring 2016, the expansion is expected to
include a spa, a conference center with multiuse ballroom space, a parking garage, additional
restaurants and more than 200 additional rooms.
“The Ak-Chin Indian Community has a longstanding and successful relationship with
Caesars Entertainment and the management
at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. The expansion
will allow the hotel and casino to continue to
bring quality hospitality and entertainment to
Pinal County and the State of Arizona,” said
Chairman Manuel. “We have long-known the
importance of providing opportunities like this
to our Community and the surrounding areas.”

Jr., Caesars Entertainment CEO Mark Frissora, Vice-Chairman
Delia Carlyle, Ann Antone and Harrah’s General Manager Robert
Livingston. CEO Frissora visited Harrah’s Ak-Chin in late June.
According to Robert Livingston, general manager of Harrah’s
Ak-Chin Casino, this expansion will increase room availability,
accommodate additional visitors and will also provide an
opportunity to host large-scale entertainment, conventions and
other meetings.
According to the 2011 Ak-Chin/Harrah’s feasibility study the
Ak-Chin Indian Community generates an estimated impact of
more than $500 million in direct or indirect monies each year
from its various business enterprises. In addition to Harrah’s
Ak-Chin Casino, the Ak-Chin Indian Community also owns
Ak-Chin Farms, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, the Santa
Cruz Commerce Center and UltraStar Multi-tainment Center at
Ak-Chin Circle.
“The economic impact created during the expansion and the
prospect for additional jobs once the project is complete will
only further benefit the City of Maricopa and Pinal County as
well as the Community,” said Chairman Manuel.

There was a plan for having a 10 year

unfortunately plans fells through. However,

we’ll be able to invite the community back for
a big 10 year celebration.” he said.

FLORENCE - The Pinal County Public Health Services
District announced on Tuesday that the county has seen its
first locally acquired human West Nile virus (WNV) case
of 2015. A male from Maricopa has been confirmed with
the infection and is currently receiving medical care while
recovering.
WNV is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite
of a mosquito. The overall risk of WNV to humans is low and
the majority of people infected will not experience any clinical
symptoms. For those that get symptoms common symptoms
include fever, headache, tiredness and body aches. A small
percentage of people may experience a more serious form
of illness that can include lasting or permanent neurological

bright as ever.
To reduce both annoying bites from floodwater mosquitoes
and the risk of West Nile, Pinal County recommends the
following:

Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can lay
their eggs. Check for items outside the home that
collect water, such as cans, bottles, jars, buckets, old
tires, drums and other containers and get rid of them.

Change water in flower vases, birdbaths, planters and
animal watering pans at least twice a week.

Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets, and move air
conditioner drain hoses frequently.

Use insect repellent on exposed skin when you go
outdoors. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent
such as those with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon
eucalyptus. Even a short time being outdoors can be
long enough to get a mosquito bite.

When weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long

Take extra care to use repellent and protective
clothing during evening and early morning -- or
consider avoiding outdoor activities during these
times. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting
times for many species of mosquitoes.

Repair or install screens on your home. Keep
mosquitoes outside by having well-fitting screens
on both windows and doors. Offer to help neighbors
whose screens might be in bad shape. Don’t forget
to make sure that screens are repaired on tents when
camping.

If you have a swimming pool, keep it operational. If
you must keep it out of use, make sure you remove
the standing water, keep it chlorinated, or run the
filter daily.
Horses are also susceptible to WNV. Horse owners
are encouraged to talk with their veterinarians
regarding

vaccine
for
horses.

Pinal County Environmental Health Services also investigates
complaints related to WNV, such as standing water, green
pools, or other reports of mosquito activity. If you would like

The categories that factored
in Maricopa’s 11th overall
score were: size of school,
division, previous year’s
rankings and standings.
The MaxPreps Freeman
Rankings do not factor in
a school’s achievements in
other sports. Statewide, the
Rams currently rank as the
57th best school in Arizona.
A few Ak-Chin MHS Athletes playing sports this year. Amelia Machado (Junior - Volleyball), Morgan Peters
(Junior - Volleyball), Nikolai White (Senior - Football), Carol Ann Enos (Sophomore - Volleyball) and Maraiah
Carlyle (Freshman - Volleyball) are just some of the student athletes this fall playing a sport for their school.
Not pictured but are scheduled to play for MHS this year. Senior Jonas Miguel (Football) and Freshman Bradley
Miguel (football).
Their multiple championships in their
respective leagues prove that. It takes
a strong team to turn the corner and
make “next year” a reality.
With Maricopa high school, “next
year” is now. Putting an emphasis
on stopping the run and the passing
game, Coach McDonald has created
a squadron of dedicated athletes on
both sides of the line of scrimmage.
In mid-July, Coach invited MHS
Rams to participate in “Camp of
Champions”, a football camp in
Winslow, AZ. At camp, players were
conditioned by coaches to help improve
their skill sets on offense and defense.
Similarly, in June, Ak-Chin Senior
and defensive anchor Nikolai
White and the rest of the linemen
of MHS traveled to Tempe
for the Big Man Competition
at
Arizona
State
University.

BASKETBALL
It’s the tried and true method of
thinking in sports. “Next year, we’ll
get better, next year.” The Suns
have said it, so have the Cardinals
and Diamondbacks. Unfortunately,
whether it’s a Santonio Holmescatch or a John Paxon three pointer,
neither of the teams have been able
to capture the glory days of their
yesteryear and have been stuck in
“next year” for years if not decades.

Kickball fun at MPA Park
Open basketball tournaments are fun as they pair
contests of rez ball versus street style ball. Both have
aggressive play and quick scoring. However, at this
past weekend’s End of the Summer Men’s Basketball
Tournament street style play with more visits to the hoops
with slam dunks won Private Lessons the championship.
Twelve teams participated in bracket play at Ak-Chin
gym. Ak-Chin was prepared to play with ten members
strong on Saturday. Their first game, scheduled at 9:50
was met with a forfeit. Their next game at 2pm, met the
same fate. The team would finally hit the court on Sunday
at 9am playing against Gila River. What was almost
ironic is that members of the Gila River team almost did
not make the game, fixing a flat tire on Casa Blanca Road
near State Route 347. They raced into the gym as they
were picked up by passing fans. Ak-Chin lost the game
and was eventually eliminated.

Happy 14th Birthday to Dad’s Princess, Doria Garcia
We hope you have a day that is full of surprises.
We are very fortunate to have a daughter that is helpful,
kind, caring, and loving, a person that will go out of her way to
help those in need. Doria we will make the best of your day. As
we know, you are an official “high school student”,
so with that being said, we do want you to do the best
you could with your schoolwork and know that you are
capable to do it. Just know that no matter what, we will always
be your support and we love you very much. Happy Birthday
“I-Ya” and again, we will make the best of your special day.
Love you always: Dad, Mom, Davin, David and Daria
